Such a cool bar in Adams Morgan. It felt like such an immersive experience with the decor. I loved the menu being in the form of a newspaper, it was a great touch. The menu had a wide variety of cocktails with different spirits and flavor profiles. I ordered the code red and thought it was good, personally wish it was a tad sweeter but I'd still order again. I can't remember the name of my husbands drink, but he thought it was just okay but would be willing to come back for a different drink.
What a cool place! In DC for a conference and staying at an Airbnb down the street, this was super close and easy to find. Thankfully they had a couple of signs so we knew we were in the right place (they were subtle). We knocked on the door, gave the code word (code red - shocker) and were seated right away. The inside is just gorgeous! Speakeasy decor, Frank Sinatra soundtrack - the ambience is great. We were there for happy hour so I got the Mary Pickford and M got the Southside - both delicious and reasonably priced. We also got the smoked Gouda arancini - delicious! For dinner I got the Roasted beet, arugula, and burrata salad - the vinaigrette was very good and plenty of it. The burrata was more mozzarella than burrata but it was still good. M got wings and crispy Brussels sprouts - both very good. I ended up with the brownie sundae as dessert and M got a classic martini. Overall, very good experience - the food was good, the decor was great - we really enjoyed it.
Winter Restaurant Week 2026 First, this place is a brilliant speakeasy and the proof of that is in the abandoned storefront look on the outside, leading to a stunning decor inside. Felt like we stepped into the 1920s. Loved loved loved Next, service was excellent and the staff really did a great job with the services offered. Our waitress Christina was the best. Drinks- I was completely sold on the Southside, a perfect citrus mix which tastes great but was a sure creeper, drink responsibly. My boyfriend tried the Kinky Thompson but it wasn't his fav so he pivoted to the Kentucky Trail bourbon flight, which he enjoyed! For the first course, we both ordered the Tuna Crudo, a fresh and delectable appetizer which had some beautiful notes of lemon zest added to it. Amazing start For the second course I ordered the Garlic & Herb Roasted Rack of Lamb, and my boyfriend ordered the Surf and Turf. Surf and Turf-paired with mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts, both cooked perfectly. The steak cut was seasoned well and the prawn was buttery soft. This dish was stellar Garlic & Herb Roasted Rack of Lamb-paired with couscous and rainbow carrots, my goodness, this was a culinary masterpiece in flavors!!!!! The couscous complemented the lamb by adding a break in between the savory flavors which exuded from the perfectly seasoned lamb lollipops. The carrots were seared well, not too soft and just the perfect crunch. Absolutely amazing dish Final course- we ran into a shortage of crème brûlée as sadly they ran out early, so the later dinner crowd was unable to enjoy the award winning dessert. However, they were accommodating and I was able to get a banana foster while my boyfriend enjoyed the cheesecake. My banana foster was cool, nothing to rave about. The cheesecake was also okay. We will indeed return again and hopefully we could enjoy that crème brûlée. I mean, I guess? Located in the heart of Adam's Morgan Code Red is a discreet speak easy that serves tapas and specialized drinks. I made a reservation for 8:30pm on 1/23/26 for their $55 Restaurant Week Menu. Upon arrival we knocked at least 3x before settling on calling the location so they could open the door. In 20 degree weather you can understand how frustrating that was. When we got inside we could barely hear one another so it doesn't surprise me that they couldn't hear us knocking. Seating is sparse with roughly 6 tables for 2 lining the center isle, booths on the left and the bar on the right. Once inside we were seated immediately. The decor inside is very......red hence the name lol, a cool vibe for a lowkey date but don't expect to do much talking here without a bit of shouting. Took a bit for our waiter to make it to us but otherwise the service was seamless. Emelio (sp) was our server and he was amazing. We had: Tuna Crudo - 6/10 - the texture of the tuna was decent but it lacked any actual flavor especially salt. The ginger made up for it in some respects but it couldn't save it. I would've loved to take this home but am a stickler for proper food storage and unless I could guarantee they could store it properly before I left it wasn't worth the risk for me. Surf N Turf - 6/10 - Prawns, Waygu, mashed potatoes and Brussel sprouts. The prawns were rubbery, the mashed potatoes were chalky, the Brussel sprouts were burnt and overall everything lacked seasoning. I wasn't asked how I wanted my steak cooked but luckily it came out medium well and while I prefer more of a medium cook it wasn't bad. In addition to the lack of seasoning the meal came out room temperature, barely luke warm. I don't know if had been sitting or what but by the time it made it to me it was nearly cold. Mashed potatoes tasted boxed, no depth at all which was unfortunate because paired with the steak it's a staple that fell flat. Cheesecake - 10/10 - the best thing I ate from here. The crust was perfect and the cheesecake itself had great flavor. My friend had: Heart of Palm Ceviche - 8/10 Lamb - 8/10 Cheesecake - 10/10 Strawberry lemon drops 4x - 10/10 - they were delicious, no notes. However buyer beware they charge an additional $2 per drink to flavor it bringing the total to $18. Not a terrible thing but wasn't mentioned until I saw the bill and would've been good to know upfront. After all was said and done we spent $208 plus $25 tip for, what I felt, was just an ok meal. For the hassle that is parking, plus entry I couldn't see myself coming back but it was nice to try which is what the general sentiment for restaurant week is for.
I am obsessed with this speakeasy! The menu is actually a fake newspaper from the prohibition days. The whole bar was dim with red lights. All of the drinks were inspired by the prohibition days with a couple classics. They also have a solid food menu and highly recommend the desserts. The server was very attentive. We had a group of 6 and were able to comfortably sit in one of the booths and it was great people watching.
The first time I came to Code Red was last summer, and I genuinely found myself counting down the days until I could return. Finally made it back - and it did not disappoint. This is such a perfect spot for either a date night or a fun night out with friends. The speakeasy vibe, the chic atmosphere, and the music (a smooth, chill house mix) all come together so effortlessly. Plus, being open until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays is a huge bonus. Definitely make a reservation ahead of time - this place stays busy for a reason. From my previous visit, I remember having a ravioli dish, what I believe was a braised beef, and their sliders with duck fat fries - all of which were incredible and clearly memorable since I was thinking about them for months. The sliders paired with those fries were honestly a standout. This time around, we had to get the duck fat fries again, and they were just as phenomenal as I remembered. The cheesesteak oysters were easily a 10/10 - fresh, meaty, and honestly surprising coming from someone who used to not even like oysters. We also tried the grilled octopus, which was well-seasoned (as expected, slightly chewy), and the fried calamari, which was light, not heavy at all, and paired perfectly with the sauces. The tuna tartare was another standout - super fresh, soft, and practically melted in your mouth. For drinks, we went all in. The Dirty Diamond martini with blue cheese olives was great, though if you like your martinis extra filthy, I'd recommend specifying that. The Hemingway Special had a nice subtle sour kick, and the vanilla mint espresso martini was strong (you can definitely taste the alcohol) but still smooth and frothy. The Mary Pickford with Malibu was surprisingly delicious - almost like a mocktail. The Paloma was solid, and the Code Red cocktail gave me slight cosmopolitan vibes. But the real star was the dulce de leche espresso martini--absolutely unforgettable. What really ties everything together here is the service. The staff - from the hosts to the servers - are attentive, welcoming, and genuinely elevate the experience. Overall, Code Red is one of those places you keep coming back to. If you're looking for a stylish speakeasy atmosphere with great food, drinks, and energy, this is it.
Stumbled upon this awesome speakeasy while visiting DC. Walked past it twice before realizing where it was. You have to know the password to enter (code red). We caught the mid day crowd and made it just in time before the big rush. The service was fantastic. We sat at the bar, it was happy hour so we took full advantage. The star was the octopus. Everything we had was great. I look forward to stopping in when I visit again.
I had heard of this speakeasy for a few years now but this was my first time actually getting to check it out. The entrance door is a large steel door with a knocker, a combination lock and a sliding grate in the middle. To gain access, you need to use the knocker and then provide the code word when it is answered. I, however, didn't know this so I had a great banter with the staff before being allowed in lol! As soon as you walk in, you feel like you have been transferred back to the prohibition era. The space is intimate and dimly lit with red lighting and decor all around. The seating ranges from velvet couches to other antique furniture. Luckily, because I arrived early enough and didn't have a reservation I was able to get a seat at the bar. They have happy hour aka bootlegger hour from 5-7 with both drink and food specials. Tuesdays they also have $1 oysters all day while supplies last. The menu is a presented in newpaper format from th early 1900's. In addition to the menu it is filled with fun facts from history. The staff were great! Super friendly and food and drink came out fairly quickly. I usually avoid the AdMo area due to the traffic and awful parking but definitely plan to be back to visit this gem.
Knock knock! What's the code? Don't tell anyone but the code is "code red" you didn't hear that from me shhh! Tucked away behind an unmarked door in the heart of Adam's Morgan DC, this speakeasy is quite the gem. From the moment you step in, the intimate ambiance, fabulous vintage decor & perfectly crafted cocktails. I felt like I was transported back to the 1920s. I had the beef skewers and a side of fries along with my cocktail of choice "MARY PICKFORD". My friend enjoyed calamari and fresh $1 oysters (Tuesday special). If you're looking for a cool experience and a sophisticated environment I highly recommend this establishment! This truly was one of the best speakeasies I've ever been too. You walk through this big metal door and are escorted into a red-lit room sprawled with tree-like plants and old memorabilia. My friends and I were placed in this little cozy nook with a cool couch and great lighting which made it all that better. I got the Code Red drink and it was very tasty but also so strong so definitely worth the money. I got the espresso martini which I think is one of the best I've had. Overall, the staff were friendly and checked in accordingly and I would definitely want to come back when I'm back in DC. This place is a must!
Hiding in plain sight! This inconspicuous storefront passes as possibly vacant with a bunch of random pieces of paraphernalia in the windows that totally throws you off. Once you check the address a couple of times, you realize this has to be it! You walk up to a locked metal door with a keypad. Once you knock, a small window opens and a gentleman asks for the password. After a quick interaction, we realized the password was RED! LOL Once inside, we were impressed by this dimly lit Speakeasy. Mostly adorned in red velvet and red lighting, this could not have been a cooler vibe. Our server was amazing. She explained the theme and menu in detail. We chose the grilled octopus, truffle fries, lamb chops and Wagyu Sliders. Everything was delicious but those damn fries were BOMB!!! I couldn't stop eating them. The drinks were expertly made, especially the "Oscar's Wilde" which was delicious! We thoroughly enjoyed CODE RED and look forward to visiting again in the VERY near future!
The secret is out and this speakeasy is one you want to visit! As soon your enter the Adams Morgan corridor on 18th street, look for the inconspicuous building with the big black door. Set in the center, at eye level, is the "hatch" or better known as the speakeasy grille. If you have never been, you must knock to enter. Knock loud, three knocks and you'll see someone peek from behind the door, no words, just a stare. Then secretly whispers, "What's the passcode?" If you don't know, say the name of the restaurant and you'll be sure to be let in. The decor is everything! Dimly lit and hues of red, all over. Velvet is the theme! You'll see the beautiful lights above the bar, birdcages. Too cute. The tree, the lighting! Perfect! This owner went above and beyond! Some staff dressed the part, kudos to the server whose attire fit the script! Nice touch. Patrons are a mix of people, super diverse! The cool kids crowd! Money ain't a thing here! The low rated reviews are most definitely from Anti-Saloon League members, clearly. LOL no way this place deserves less than 5 stars! They did a phenomenal job of transforming this place into a real speakeasy and although jazz is typical of the "old" school speakeasy's, I enjoyed the music. It was a mix of genres and I can appreciate them wanting to appease all customers! Take it from an ALL-STAR elite, come, you will not be disappointed! So as always... Let's get into it! Grilled Octopus - Perfectly seasoned Wagyu Sliders - Delicious Truffle Fries - My honey couldn't get enough! Lamb - Now looks are deceiving - it looked just barely cooked but the flavor of those lamb chops was perfect!!!!!!! Well done chef! Drinks - Those bartenders stole the show because the drinks were ON POINT, Oscar's Wilde you were the drink of choice! Effortlessly done, date night was spectacular thanks to Code "Red". Went to code red for happy hour and had a very pleasant time. We ordered the arincini and palm ceviche as well as several drinks. I enjoyed everything and found the food to be inventive and high quality. Would love if this bar added aviations to their menu, even if just as a special. Was happy to see the array of absinthe cocktails though. It's true that the theme is not subtle but it is not too over-the-top and the bar can still be enjoyed as a regular neighbourhood bar. The happy hour is reasonably priced so this is a good option if you are in the area and want a more unique experience. read more

BIG fan of this place!! As we walked through AdMo this was kind of an impromptu stop and I am glad we decided to go into this "speakeasy". The vibes inside were very on theme for their prohibition aesthetic and the dimly light area seemed to be a good place for a date night. I tried the dulce de leche espresso martini which was a lovely twist on the traditional espresso martini and I might have even liked it more than a traditional espresso martini. A bit on the pricey side but worth it in my opinion. We also got some truffle fries which are always a classic. I will definitely be returning!! read more

Such a fun speakeasy! From the moment you get to the door you're asked for a secret passcode or reservation... neither we had but luckily for us it was a Tuesday afternoon and we had no wait. It was cute and fun way to be welcomed in. Stepped in for a drink and were greeted with a menu full of fun cocktails. We got $1 oysters which was a fun surprise and the cocktail was incredible. We were looking for some dinner and drinks in the area and saw Code Red on Yelp! Luckily they had just enough seating to get us in on a busy Friday night! The theme is a speakeasy in Chicago in the prohibition era. The lighting is moody and the decor is nice and fun. There is also a fun little interaction you can do with the doorman! We were carded upon entering the establishment so I'm unsure if underage folks can enter. We got a few drinks to start which were all lovely. Our server helped us greatly with picking drinks and explaining items on the menu. The menu is small but straightforward. We got the calamari to share, which can always be a hit or miss. I was so pleasantly surprised that the calamari was fried perfectly in a nice crispy seasoned batter! I got the steak which my friends got the wagyu sliders w fries. The steak was perfectly cooked and placed on a bed of Brussel sprouts that were a tad bit too sweet for me but still delicious. The steak did come with a green sauce that did have a little bit too much oil for me as well. Overall though the decor, food, drinks and vibes really hit the spot that day and I had a lovely time. read more

HOT. I'm not talking about the room temperature (I'll never find that in DC - at least I wasn't too cold!), and I'm not talking about the drinks (why don't more places offer hot cocktails year-round, and also, why aren't there more hot cocktails?) I'm talking about the bartenders - there were three men behind the bar when I went yesterday, and they were all devastatingly handsome in their smart-looking uniforms. I have a weakness for well-dressed men, what can I say? I also want to note the dapper gentleman at the door, who not only led my partner and I inside the "speakeasy", he even got us side-by-side seats at the bar by politely asking another patron to move over a seat for us. I went into effusive detail about the staff because that was really the best part of the experience for me. The decor is a little over the top in its speakeasy kitchiness, but it does set a certain vibe. My drink was a MISTAKE. I don't drink cocktails often these days so I decided to be adventurous and try the Yellow Negroni - for those who like Strega, this is for you, but I have learned that I am not a fan. My partner did the smart thing and went with his safe standby, a Manhattan on the rocks. He was pretty happy with it. I might consider coming back to Code Red to try a different drink at happy hour; hopefully I would be able to snag a nice lounge chair without needing a reservation. More likely with a friend than my partner though, since the ambiance lends itself more to fun that romance. read more

Didn't make a reservation and we were able to cash in on their happy hour, which is 4-7 daily. The setup is really cool, its prohibition era with tons of artwork and decor throughout. Our server was great, tons of high energy, frequently checked in and shared their new drink specials. Unfortunately, service was very slow, we waited 35 minutes for our drinks to come out, so much so that we closed our tab before the drinks even came. Now, the drinks were delicious, but the wait time is what really impacted my rating. I'd like to come back during the week and see if there's a difference. read more

Drinks-each cocktail was creative, great flavor profile. Food- we got lamb chops, calamari, duck fries, sliders, tater tots, and wings/fries. Food was flavorful and good portion sizes. Vibe-speakeasy with various seating options. Make a reservation if able, but walk ins on. Well lit. Service- a bit wonky getting in and seated but everyone we interacted with was attentive and helpful. read more

Just finished at Code Red on 07/01/25. The service from the staff at the front door to the bartender (Jonas) was great. I LOVED the $1 oysters and the Beef Skewers were yummy. **I did have to take 1 star away because sadly I asked for a French 75 with Botanist Gin and wasn't given that drink.** I would've been fine with receiving the Southside drink ($7 during happy hour) with an upcharge for my gin choice, since it was a happy hour option. Instead I was still charged the regular price for a south side ($17) and an additional upcharge ($6) for the botanist. I'm very bad at sending back drinks due to anxiety and this was a promotion celebration for me so I didn't want to dull the mood, but I just want the staff to be aware this kind of thing isn't cool. Also thankfully his drinks are yummy so I did order one more (to be transparent). But still, assuming someone doesn't know what they ordered isn't nice. So, I hope that on my next visit I'll be able to get the drink I ordered. Everything is on brand at Code Red- the red jacket of the bouncer and the red dim lights. This Adams Morgan cocktail bar creates a large menu of drinks from classics to their own spin on classics. My friend and I walked in on a Wednesday evening around 8:30 p.m. and got seats at the bar. The old fashioned by mixologist friend said was "solid." Enjoying more sweet drinks, I asked the bartender to make a more sweet drink with berries. I got a raspberry cocktail with egg whites. It was good, but too sweet. (At other cocktail bars like Copycat, the sweet is always balanced. This drink was not.) They also have a small food menu. For checking in on Yelp, I unlocked free truffle fries. They came out with ketchup and some type of mayo. The fries were very hot and were mediocre. Also, we were charged for them in the end when they were supposed to be free. Service was just okay. They were overly busy, but there were long lag times in between everything. In fact, we decided to not ask for the truffle fries to be corrected because of how long that would have taken. Overall, it was a decent experience, but Code Red wouldn't make a "top cocktail bar" list. read more
The aesthetic speakeasy feel drew me into Code Red and I finally came to check it out for happy hour with a friend. Upon arrival we gave the code to enter and quickly got seated. Definitely recommend reservations because as the night grew on the bar was packed and seating was limited. Happy hour is from 5-7pm daily and has a nice array of food & drink options. We ended up ordering a mock tail, wings, heart of palm ceviche, tuna tartare, smoked Gouda arincini and truffle fries (**free if you check in!!**). I honestly wasn't impressed with the food at all. I think this is more of a place to grab drinks with friends & catch up so if you're sober curious and/or looking to eat I wouldn't recommend. But it's worth checking out solely for the awesome aesthetic! read more

Yelp check in fries were pretty darn good and delicious was even better. Service is great! The staff were pleasant and so attentive. This speakeasy located in the Adams-Morgan neighborhood of DC is an eclectic, strange and enticing place!! Of course, I found it on Yelp and, I'm glad our party meandered here on our travels a couple os weeks ago. The drinks were great, the people were nice, we had a great time, but, tech-new wave music??? Now, a music connoisseur in our party pleaded his case for retro jazz, funk, blues music to reign supreme on the speakers. The owner - manager reminded us nicely that the crowd they get on a Saturday night is younger than us and they need to attract them in. He noted that there are a lot of venues in the area. I get it and it was actually fine. The music wasn't overly loud and we all could hear each other at our table. They offer an extensive list of pre and post prohibition libations to choose from. I spotted some high end whiskeys and bourbons at the bar which you can get straight up if you like. I chose some cocktails on the list that are in the photos I took. Definitely check this place out if you happen to be in the nation's capital. read more

Great place for a date night or groups. You hear Sinatra in the background but not too loud that you can't carry conversations. Their "happy hour" is 5p-7p tues-fri and from a price point is reasonable otherwise it would be way pricier. We ordered items from the happy hour food menu along with their regular one We tried their cocktails on the happy hour menu: the "Southside" and the "Kinky Thompson". Both were good! Not included in their happy hour pricing is their crystal service, mmm smoky old-fashioned, yumm! Cheese charcuterie-nice selection of cheeses. Marrow- came out smoking, literally. It was delicious. Wagyu beef sliders-3 in an order was tasty. Madagascan shrimp- 1 giant shrimp you peel. It was pricy yet tasty. I thought we might as well just try it. Truffle fries-were good, perfect to fill us up. The plates were small but flavorful. We ordered til we felt full. We would definitely return for their happy hour. Service was friendly, and helpful. A nice speakeasy for the grown and sexy, don't let the Adams Morgan location deceive you. I was in a group of about 10 people for a birthday gathering. There are two roped off small lounge areas in the back for larger parties. The service was spectacular from the moment I arrived. Not only did the waiter, but the whole staff including the owner checked on us frequently. Libations - Espresso martini, Round of Lemon Shots courtesy of the staff 5/5 Bill of Fair - Truffle Fries (free with check-in), Picanha Steak, Grilled Pawn 5/5 Calamari 4/5 The food is served as small plates, so as one of the previous Yelpers recommended - either start the night here or finish it here. I went to Code Red during Halloween weekend and I can definitely say it was a vibey experience. I love that you genuinely feel as though you are in the Prohibition Era from the music being played down to the decor. When you arrive, you knock on the door and wait for the person at the entrance to open the door and welcome you. I loved that! The gentleman that welcomed us brought us in right away and was really friendly. We were seated promptly. The drinks I ordered were crafted well. I can't wait to get back to Code Red. This is definitely going to be one of my regular speak easy spots. Locating it was pretty simple and the gentlemen at the door and host stand were so polite! We came here with another couple because it was featured on the Guide to Imbibe book, and we're so glad it was included as it's now our favorite speakeasy in DC. It's just a door with a red light in the main part of Adams Morgan, and you need to knock on it for the doorman to come. I'd definitely recommend reservations since this place was packed on a Saturday night. The doorman was extremely funny and pleasant, and he is actually one of the co-owners with his son and did a lot of the design/decor (and a great job). He gave us a welcome shot and joked around with us while we were waiting for our table. We primarily had the drinks - I had the South Side and the Monkey Gland and both were delicious. We also had the truffle fries and cheesecake and both were also really tasty. This place was extremely fun and we had a great night here. Definitely recommend. read more

Parking can be hard to find, but there's a lot across the street that is 0-1 hour for $8 I believe and anything more is max price at $24 which is steep but if that's your last resort go there. When arriving the security guard was super friendly and gave us the opportunity to knock and say the code to get in. Sorry cant tell you it here! The person checking us in (Nikolas) was extremely accommodating. We checked in with reservations (highly recommend). He made sure everything was alright along with the server throughout our diner. Very friendly all around. We came during happy hour 5-7pm on the week day. There are 3 cocktails and a number other drinks available during this hour (see pictures attached). A number of small plates. Everything came out fresh, fast, and most importantly delicious at a good price. Whenever happy hour ended we ordered the bone marrow and wagyu sliders of which were fantastic. I only wish the marrow dish came with more bread. Atmosphere was excellent with beautiful decor. I have no complaints. I loved my experience here. And highly recommend you coming here for a date or just coming for drinks/food. I definitely will be back! read more

I love a bar/speakeasy that literally teleports you to a different realm or in this case - time period!! The ambiance and decor take you back to the prohibition era. Ideally located in the Adams Morgan strip... Code Red is one of a kind!! I felt spoilt for choice with their selection of cocktails, and eventually went with the Smoked Old Fashioned - which was !! Looking forward to going back again to try more of the cocktails on the menu, the food and the cocktails prepared directly at your table!! The theatrics were awesome as was the service!! This is a perfect date night spot, or for grabbing drinks with friends, celebrating a birthday party... or just treating yourself to a detail oriented mixology haven!!! read more

Lovely ambiance in this dimly lit speakeasy venture! The entrance is unassuming so make sure you knock and someone will answer and ask for the code. We were walking around Adam Morgan with a plan if rooftop or outdoor seats until we get out here.. we love the warm welcome from the security guys outside until we met the bartender vectoria and made us perfect drinks.. it's a different world like we watched a movie from the 5 we get into it. An amazing speakeasy! Code Red has a fantastic happy hour M-F from 5pm to 7pm. Cocktails are $7 and they have a good amount of small bites to eat. My friends and I tried the Kinky Thompson, Southside & Mary Pickford - all were amazing. The vegan heart of palm ceviche was unexpectedly delicious, it almost tasted like actual ceviche. The smoked Gouda arancini was also a must have. The vibes inside were a 10/10 and the waiters were so kind, overall a great experience & I can't wait to go back. read more
