This was so much fun. I brought my 14 year old son and some friends here for his birthday and they had an absolutely fabulous time. Gwen was working and she gave us just the right amount of hints. "I cracked the code And I knew what it's all about" (Steely Dan) Escape Rooms have been around since the 2010's. I had never been to one until yesterday when a professional organization I belong to brought seventeen of us to CodeWord Escape in Rocky Hill. It was a chance for me to try out my puzzle solving and teamwork skills, and it turned out to be a blast! I was pleased to have contributed one key discovery to help us get a lock combination. We split our group into two, and my group went into the King Midas Room. Our scenario involved solving a series of puzzles and riddles to find the magic lamp that turned King Midas' daughter into a solid gold statue. Solving the puzzle included opening up half a dozen wooden chests with a variety of locks -keyed locks, letter combination locks, and number combination locks. We had to find hidden roses, hidden swords, and hidden ducks, and decipher the lock combinations. They are clues everywhere in plain sight -you and your team have to use your brain power to decipher the clues and apply them to the lock combinations. As our adventure unfurled, a door in our room magically appeared to reveal a second room, and then a third room. I won't give away any clues and will just boast that we easily beat the one hour of time allotted to us to solve the puzzle and restore the young princess from her golden tomb. Our host was a pleasant young man who briefed us and offered clues upon request. The location has three different Escape Room scenarios and not a lot else -so there is no snack bar or refreshment stand. But if you want to have some fun with your friends and exercise that gray matter between your ears, I'm pretty sure you'll have as much fun as I did. read more

Originally had booked a room we really wanted to do at their Farmington location but they called us a few days ahead of time to say the AC was broken and asked us if we wanted to change. We choose to do the Movie Mayhem. Overall we were a group of 6 with probably close to 50 rooms done combined so we are pretty experienced. This room had a lot of creative puzzles that and things we hadn't seen before with minimal lock puzzles which is always a plus. Also it was one that definitely required a larger group (4+ people) to solve some puzzles. That being said we solved the puzzle in like 42 minutes so kind of felt like we didn't get our money's worth even though the actual game play was top notch. read more

My first time in an escape room event! So much fun! We had a really good host to explain what to do, expect and all the do's and dont's. The theme was Midas touch and you were transformed to an ancient time in Greece. We met another family to work with us and that was really cool. Lots of brains working together to solve the many puzzles. We were told we would receive hints if it looked like we were lost. The hints were really just reminders (I feel) that nudged you back on track. So don't feel like it's a bad thing! We all contributed our own helpful ideas to help solve each puzzle. We completed the room with 8 minutes to spare! We were offered a picture while holding a prop as a finale, nice touch! I cannot wait for them to have more rooms to solve! Update: We returned to Codeword in Dec 2019 to play their new room "The Christmas Key Catastrophe" HIT THE BULLSEYE -Love holiday themed rooms. Although the design was quite simple, we felt the holiday spirit right when we entered. The Christmas tree and presents along with the holiday colors immediately created a fun atmosphere. -The puzzles were all logical and closely tied together with Christmas. -A bit of humor was added into a reading puzzle which we always appreciate especially if the reading could be a bit longer than the usual few words. MISSED THE MARK -A prop was used in the room to symbolize an ending after we have found the gnomes but it would've been cool if it could have activated something since it was a bit confusing why it's there as it wasn't really part of a puzzle or opened anything. -Since the gnomes are quite naughty, we thought maybe the room design could be a little more "messier" than how neat it was when you walk in. A bit of "chaos" would seem more like they just caused a catastrophe inside the room and we had to put it back together. Perhaps for a harder level, items could be placed not so much in groups already and will need to be found and coordinated together at different times. -Since we're counting down to an urgent situation, if music could be added to provide a sense of urgency as we get closer to the ending or if they can get more creative with flickers of the tree lights etc., this could be a fun add-on to an immersive feel to the room as currently it felt like one type of mood throughout. TAKE A SHOT? Although the puzzles were not as difficult for enthusiasts, it was a lot of fun. We are still quite traditional and love some old fashion locks (excluding gym lockers). So, if you are a lock lover, there will be plenty of satisfaction at the end. If you like to go as a family or try an escape room as beginner escapists, you'll fall in love with escape rooms after trying this one. You can easily divide and conquer different puzzles in the room. If you like to feel like a kid again and "read" through a Christmas story book while solving puzzles along the way to achieve a jolly ending, then this is the room for you! read more

This is my 25th escape room I've played and I felt just as excited as my first game. When challenging puzzles meet a great concept and compelling production it's so easy to be engaged and have a lot of fun. We played the room with just three people and needed a little extra time at the end because of the amount of puzzles and level of difficulty. The owners came up with the concept themselves and built the place out, really cool to see local families starting businesses. Can't wait for their next room to open! read more

I took my 3 daughters - ages 8/11/12 - for the Gnome themed escape room this week. We had so much fun! Everyone felt like they were able to fully participate in the experience. The woman asked in advance if we wanted hints if we were stuck or running out of time and we accepted her offer. Her hints were always exactly what we needed at just the right time to keep us moving while not stealing any of the joy for us of figuring it out for ourselves. The room itself and everything in it was well-made and clean, not cheap or worn out like the escape room at the mall in Manchester. read more

I've been to a few escape rooms in CT, and this is the most detailed, well thought-out place so far. The puzzles are challenging. We had no technical difficulties or "the lock was just sticky" moments. The theming was beautiful and at 10 minutes left when we thought we were almost done... well, there's a twist that we didn't expect that upped the challenge and the excitement. Clearly this was built by someone who loves escape rooms. I really really recommend going here if you want a great group activity. We did the Midas one. Hard, but fun. read more

This place rocks. My boyfriend and I have done 40+ escape rooms and Movie Mayhem is now our favorite of all time, and Curse of the Golden Touch made it into the top 10!! Incredible puzzles and game flow, and we really enjoyed talking with the owners. Some puzzles in these rooms we've never seen before and were blown away. Awesome escape room- probably one of the best that me & my friends have been to. The decor is very high quality and the game is a lot of fun. I won't spoil it for other guests but you'll definitely need your team to be ready for the complex puzzles that codeword offers. We had a dizzying time trying to solve them but ultimately made it out with seconds to spare. Would also like to acknowledge the staff for their attentiveness. We have been to other escape rooms that feel as if you're being ignored when you should be entertained. Not at codeword! We look forward to returning when we can! read more

Escape rooms are not exactly my area of expertise. While I like puzzles, the thought of having to turn over every proverbial stone makes me a little uneasy. Still, when a coworker suggested we get small group to go for bonding, I obliged. Codeword currently offers two rooms, with a third on the way. I also appreciate that at least one of their rooms is always themed to match the season. On the fall day that we went, we were told the room that was in progress would be Holiday-themed. Furthermore, what's nice about Codeword is that the place is centrally located & easily accessible (right off of 91), relatively new, reasonably priced (~$28-$35/person), and offers a fair mix of challenging problems for us to think through. Unfortunately, we had to accept a clue at one point, but other than that, were able to get through all stages with ease. If you're looking for an escape room in the area, look no further. read more

My girlfriend and I have done almost 40 escape rooms all over New England and this is without a doubt one of the best. They won't be the hardest rooms you will ever do, but the technology and puzzles in them are not seen anywhere else. We love the private bookings and have done "Curse of the Golden Touch" and "Movie Mayhem" which are both fantastic and fun. We were a party of four inexperienced players and we had a blast! The owners were very friendly and helpful. We either weren't smart enough to ask for clues or were so engaged in the room that that we forgot to ask. Nonetheless, they provided us with very well timed clues along the way to help keep us moving through the puzzles and we escaped with only seconds left. It was very intense. It took a lot of teamwork and communication to solve the many challenging puzzles. I think everything was very well designed and laid out and the theme added another level to it. Highly recommended.
