"Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble" After the less-than-stellar americano at 392Caffee, Emily and I decided to get more coffee later in the day and Coffee Apothecary happened to be right around the corner from Five Cities Brewing. Talk about convenient. So, after a few beers and the best meal, we dropped in for one last hit of caffeine before finishing out the day exploring. When we walked in, they had just burnt some bacon, so the place was filled with smoke. Kinda fits the Apothecary theme, in my opinion. Since we had just eaten a big meal at Five Cities, we opted for just a drink. Emily got their special HeLa CELL and I got my usual americano. They were out of brown sugar for the HeLa CELL so Emily got it substituted with caramel. We waited just a few minutes for the drinks to be ready and decided that despite the smoke that was lingering around, we would sit there and play some Uno while recharging our batteries. This americano was exactly what I wanted all day. It was dark and bitter and delicious. I sampled Emily's drink and the foam and salt and caramel were a perfect combo. Compared to the other coffeehouse we visited, this one felt more traditional. It's a bit smaller so large groups might have to sit outside or divvy up between tables. As for the aesthetics of the place, they really play into the apothecary theme. It felt rustic and antique in there, between the decor and the images on the wall. It almost reminded me of Little Raven Creamery that was open in Peoria at one point. If you find yourself in the Quad Cities and want a nice change of pace from your usual coffeehouse, give Coffee Apothecary a try. Hopefully the burnt bacon smoke will be gone by then. Not entirely sure why one of the workers didn't prop a door open to help air it out but it was like 95 degrees outside so... don't blame them for wanting to keep the shop cool. Sidenote: I do wish they had their logo that I saw on their Facebook available on either a magnet, sticker, or shirt. I love the look and vibe of plague doctors so to have that on something I can put up at home or wear would be sweet. Maybe they will have some merch in the future! We always try to support small businesses but we had a disappointing experience overall. A coffee shop that doesn't offer a cortado was surprising, and the drinks we ordered were overly sweet and syrup-heavy. The Americanos were mostly water and filled to the very top, leaving little room for proper coffee flavor. Service was equally disappointing. The staff was abrupt and unwelcoming, and at 3:00 pm we were told, without courtesy, that they were closed and needed to leave. No polite request, just a blunt statement. Poor service paired with subpar drinks made this a place I would not return to or recommend. read more

Let me start off with the good: the decor. This coffee shop is STUNNING. I love everything about the interior, as well as the general theme and vibes. It's very cool, and I probably would have made this my spot if I attended school nearby. They even have a cool rack of some vintage clothes you can buy, which I liked. When asked if there was a physical menu we could look at, the answer was no, so bring your glasses, look ahead of time, or stand off to the side. To start off, I got a Halo Effect and my friend got a Lobotomy (gotta love the names), and I enjoyed mine a lot. My friend, not as much, but her coffee came iced, which she didn't ask for. We also got scones and breakfast burritos that we agreed were delicious. However, things took a dive when we decided to try some energy drinks. The shop serves drink flights, which seems like such a cool idea. One of the flight options is flavored energy drinks with cool names, but unfortunately we just didn't enjoy them. The only one I could finish (barely) was the peach and blackberry drink, but the other three were undrinkable to me, despite thinking they sounded interesting. They were extremely sweet and the flavor combos were just not good. While the flights may seem like a good way to sample some drinks, the energy flight wasn't worth it. My other complaint is the bathroom, which isn't heated for some reason. It's like stepping outside in the cold. Just don't sit on the seat without adding some tp as a buffer, you'll be glad you did. There's no reason anyone should be getting frostbite using the bathroom. All in all I think this has potential to be a good coffee spot if you find what you like and stick with it, but not everything on the menu hits. read more

Ok first and foremost, the inside of this place is beyond perfection. Just go inside and you'll know what I mean. I would have DREAMT of a coffee shop like this when I was in college for studying and coffee dates. The melon energy drink is out of this world. Soooo tasty! But what takes the cake for me is the chemist bfast sandwhich. Oh. My. God. I can't get enough of these. I swear I will purposefully not plan for bfast so I can on accident have to come here to grab one. Trust me on this, you need one. read more

We ordered two coffee flights (seasonal & the premium). They were both deadly sweet. Tasted as if each mini beaker has 5+ pumps of syrup in each drink. We wanted to still taste the coffee. While it's a cute novelty, not worth it in my opinion for what you get. Just order regular coffee. read more

Coffee is solid, and many choices of interesting hot and cold drinks. Cute theme. Locally sourced baked goods are excellent. However, the counter and drive thru staff are generally surly and have poor manners. I try to use local spots instead of chains, so I've given them 5 chances, but now I'm out. read more

Just paid $8 for a coffee. Ordered iced. Handed me hot. When I reminded them that it was iced they took it back and pored my hot coffee over ice so now I have an $8 lukewarm coffee that is rapidly melting my ice and then I will have a watered down $8 coffee. Uggh. read more
