Coffee is excellent and a wide range of bean / roast options for pour over. I think the beans are from the same supplier that does Cole Coffee in Elmwood if I remember correctly. Friendly people working there. Has a neighborhoody feel. Pepples vegan donuts: YES! They're awesome and don't leave you with as much donut regret. Only suggestions I would have: give the exterior a makeover. It's not clear from the outside that it's a totally different place than the former Coffee Conscious and I bet they're missing out on some customers. Also the inside could be a little warmer... Feels like it's still in transition / not quite done. I like the raw aesthetic they're going for and how it ties into the identity of gilman st. punk scene but the bar is high around here for coffee bars (see new Philz, Artis, Bartavelle, awesome-looking Allegro in the new Whole Foods). On the other hand it is cool to have a counterpoint to the ultra-polished places... But it really could look and feel better than it does. Overall I love having this place right in my neighborhood. I wrote this on FB the day of my visit 4/24. What's hella annoying is when folks, particularly white folks and POC who are in a "sunken place", discount my experiences as a black woman by suggesting that the color of all this beautiful blackness has no weight in my day to day interactions. BULLSHIT! I've been at this cafe for a cool minute doing this paper that is due tonight. I had hella coffee and water, so naturally my bladder is yelling, "LET MY PEEOPLE GO!" So I ask the two folks behind the counter if there's a restroom available. Super nice dude who is white passing (he spoke Spanish or Portuguese so I don't wanna assume) apologizes and tells me they don't have a public restroom. Ok, fine. I see no restroom in sight, or a sign pointing to a restroom, or a key to the bathroom by the register so I figured as much. Wouldn't hurt to ask though. He tells me to use a restroom down the street at a store. Cool, not a problem. I need some fresh air anyway cus this caffeine got my hands shaking like a salt shaker. I come back to the cafe and continue to write this paper. 20 minutes or so pass and this white customer asks to use the bathroom. There is now just the white girl at the register (who was present when I asked). I'm peeping game. She hesitates, looks at me over the coffee beans, and allows the lady to use the restroom. HA ok trick! I got you but let me not do too much. Maybe this lady is a regular and they got that type of relationship. This is my first time here. Then they let a another white lady use the restroom and then another one after her. So three white women got to to pee on sight while i had to walk down the street to use the bathroom! Damn..I'm having a #HiddenFigures moment!! We all paid money here so the only obvious difference is the color of my skin and MAYBE the relationship (which i call bullshit but for the sake of optimism). At this point my blood is boiling. I'm thinking of how I am going to address this situation as calmly as possible. I ask the lady at the register who the manager of the shop is and why was I not allowed to use the restroom when three white women were after me. She said that policies recently changed and how they just started to allow customers to use the restroom. She then tells me the guy who didn't allow me to use the restroom is the manager. WOW!! UNFUCKINBELIEVABLE. So the manager was unaware that policies recently changed? When did they change...after y'all told me no? The shit is so ridiculous it's almost funny. I had to explain to her that being that I was still in there she should have not allowed anyone else to use the restroom and/or she should have said something to me before I said something to her. She was totally aware of the situation, said it had nothing to do with race, admitted to wanting to say something to him and me about it but "didn't want a scene to be caused" Who was going to cause a scene? Oh, right!! Me, cus you know black folk can never address a situation without "acting up", being aggressive, threatening, etc etc. I could do nothing but look at her sideways and walk out. GIRL BYE!! The space is small but uplifting, the kind of place where you can share a table with a stranger and have a moment's pleasant conversation before settling down to read. Perhaps the ownership has been heeding the feedback from other posters, because this morning, I had the BEST DAMN Latte with Original Pure Califia Farms Almond Milk I've ever had, to date, in Berkeley-Albany at this cafe. I am a Peet's aficionado when it comes to French Roast, but the libation I had today, was WAY-BEST! And the attentive young man, personable, competent and just the right amount of friendly! I am so on love with this place. The little cafe has its own personality, and the owner is extremely welcoming. What makes it a bonus is that this place is dog friendly. They have fair trade + organic coffee brewed, and vegan donut options. Not just any donuts, CAKE donuts (personally for me, it's the best kind), with unique flavors and personally baked and made with love by the owner himself. They have fun flavors ranging from whiskey tangerine fig donut to matcha flavored. We tried matcha, lemon poppyseed, earl grey lavender, and coffee cake donuts. All were so delicious and shockingly made with vegan ingredients. They also had muffins and scones sold. We made this place unique in its own way is the fact that the ice cubes are coffee or your tea flavor of choice, or milk cubes. Creative, and avoids watery iced drinks! I also love the fact that this place offers unique tea lattes, such as rooibos. I got it iced with soy milk, and it was so good! Definitely will be back to try the other flavors. As for non-dairy options, they have it. You can choose from almond, coconut, or soy milk. For one who is mildly lactose intolerant and with a SO which is entirely lactose intolerant, this place is magical. This cafe has easily made it on my list of go-tos here in Albany. One of the few cafes in the area which knows how to make a proper Gibraltar or Cortado ... and the Cardamom Cortado is delicious! The vegan donuts are fan-tas-ic ... actially, all of the coffee and teas are very good. Its also a very relaxing atmosphere to sit, study, create or work. Love it - great service, unpretentious coffee spot. They do a range of espresso drinks, lattes, etc and some exotic seasonal options like scotch bonnet mocha. The donuts are made on site and are amazing. Highly recommend the dulce de leche one. The owner is a huge heavy metal fan, so there's some of that playing at low volume in the background. Damien is so knowledgeable and intuitive. He figured out how I would like my drink just by observation and gave my husband tips on brewing coffee. They have amazing vegan donuts there as well. The donuts were great but the customer service was highly offensive. It was slow in the restaurant and my boyfriend and I were the only people in the cafe and were talking. Malcom, the barista was listening in to our entire conversation. My boyfriend left to go to the bathroom and Malcom left a note to my boyfriend telling him to break up with me. We were both highly offended as our conversation was none of his business as well as misquoted & taken out of context which was just bizarre. I'm not sure why an employee would feel the need to interfere with a customer's personal life when I was simply there to support a local business and purchase things. I will not be returning as long as Malcom is there. Besides that, the cafe has great vegan donuts and coffee but I am appalled the customer service was so bad I had to write my first yelp review when I don't use this app which is unfortunate. read more

I've been buying tea and coffee at this little shop for years. Prices are incredibly reasonable, and both the tea and coffee are first rate and always fresh. The woman who runs the shop is positively timeless (hasn't appeared to age at all in the decade+ I have been shopping here) and she is very gracious and greets me like an old friend when I come in. She has a talent for dispensing just the exact amount of tea onto the scale to fill your order with one fluid motion. It's almost like watching someone doing tai chi. If you are a fan of Turkish coffee and like to make it at home, she can do a Turkish grind for you on any coffee you choose. (Yay! That was a happy discovery I must share.) This is a no frills, lovely little neighborhood store. Very Zen. Unlike trendy coffee/tea shops, your path to purchasing tea/coffee is not blocked by a ziggarut of expensive (and mostly useless) coffee/tea paraphenalia in front of the door. Here, the selection is small but well chosen: a good selection of various roasts, light, medium and dark, (I dislike dark roasts, personally, so not a fan of Peets) from different parts of the world, plus well chosen black, green, and herbal teas (including the hard to find German herbal Teekane tea bags), and the relevant accoutrements. Organic strawberry lemonade was from a bottle which you can get at whole foods, all I'm saying is that it shouldn't say homemade or house made if it's bought and served directly out of the bottle. It is pricey for what it is but if it were actually good I wouldn't mind. Top that with under average service and smiles that aren't given, no greet, no thank you... Found this place while walking up the street and saw the racks of tea leaves through the window. Glad I stopped in. It's easy to miss in a car-- must have driven past it a zillion times and never noticed it--they should install an awning with their name on it so you can see it's there. A little gem. Mentioned to the employee that it was way better than the two times I had vegan donuts from Pepple's Donut Farm on San Pablo- he said Pepple's and Coffee Conscious are owned by the same person and serve the same donuts! I work in the neighborhood and this is one of favorite spots for grabbing coffee. The staff is super sweet, there is rarely a line, and the coffee is always good. The ice coffee comes with ice coffee cubes so that's an added bonus. The price is about the same as every Bay Area coffee shop ($2-$4 per drink) read more
