Wow! We were driving through the Bitterroot Valley and stayed one night in Hamilton. We looked for a place for dinner, passing up the fast food places, and saw The Coffee Cup which advertised "home cooked meals," Perfect to try. We had a great dinner! Hubby had the pork roast and I had fried chicken. Full dinners include soup AND salad which is impressive for a diner style place. We both had the cream of chicken soup which had chunks of chicken and was nice and creamy. The salad was fresh and included cauliflower and broccoli florets. The fried chicken was crispy and light. I chose the mashed potatoes which are real and were tasty. Hubby's pork roast also came with the potatoes with homemade gravy and dressing. His meal was excellent! We passed on dessert. Overall it was a delicious meal with fast and very friendly service. If we lived here we would become regular customers! read more

We were in Hamilton for seven days and ate here a few times. The waitresses could care less about you, unless you were a local. I thought one bad and rude waitress is bad, but rude waitresses three out of the four times we went there is pretty horrible. They don't check up on you for drinks and when they take your order they're rough. The hash browns never came back crispy, as asked. It's like the waitresses don't care enough about serving you to pay attention to your requests... Will find another spot when we do come back to Hamilton. I went to the Coffee Cup to get a piece of pie to go at around 2:45 on 7/16. I stood for a while in front of the pie counter, then sat at the counter, thinking that might get me some service. Two ladies were standing at the other end of the counter, just talking. Finally they laughed and one went the opposite direction to where tables were. BOTH of them saw me. The other lady started leisurely filling up some small containers, with her back to me. The 1st lady came back into the counter area, did nothing, then turned around and walked back to where the back tables were. Finally, a young woman who had been waiting on a back room came up and took care of me. I can't imagine why the 2 ladies would ignore me, knowing that I wanted service. It's not like they were busy. I guess an older lone woman is unimportant to them. I have come here with my husband and even another couple, no more. read more

I remember this place when I was a kid growing up in Hamilton, MT as Wanda's Cafe and even though it is now (and has been for a while) The Coffee Cup, the place has not changed. When I walked in, every memory came to present as the counter area, kitchen call window and bench stalls have not changed (they still have the carved animals on the stalls).....well new fixtures, decorations and carpets, but the place remains as a classic diner like feel. Breakfast is classic busy time with all the options and choices you would ecpect. I had the ham and egg scramble with added cheese, home fries and buttermilk pancake. The trio of syrups, maple, berry and apricot?....was the best part. The food was hot and I had to laugh when our waitress carried all of our food stacked on her arms....it was like watching a classical dancer. As a kid, I remember my mom working there and was trained to do this. Brought back great memories. The surprise for me, was the corned beef hash and sunnyside eggs. The hash was real, seasoned to perfection and had all those crispy textures you get when cooked on a flat top. It was the best I have had in a while. I loved the experience, hot food, quick service, attentive, but busy waitress, and the simplicity (yet tons of options) was memorable. One of our guests wanted a hamburger for breakfast and they happily accommodated. Food is priced well for the portions we got, we even joked with our server, that we may need an extra table for the food we had. The food was simple, tasty and you could tell it was made on a well seasoned flat top. It was great to see all the locals who loyally come for that cup of coffee and a breakfast. The regulars still hide, behind the counter, the cup and dice (a serious game and only for the true and tried serious player) when they come in. I live in Hamilton, this afternoon I had a cup of coffee $2.00 and a blueberry muffin $2.00 Total bill $4.00. The coffee was weak and had zero flavor and the muffin was tiny and tasted like it came from a Jiffy muffin mix, horrible. I will never stop here again. The server never asked if I wanted a refill on my horrible 2 buck coffee. A place calling itself the coffee cup could at least have a decent cup of joe. Unless you are desperate give this place a pass. One review said you would think you were in the 50s' except in the 50s' a decent cup of coffee was 10 to 25 cents depending on the place. Honestly, I tried to be fair, but it rankles me to be gouged 2 bucks for a small cup of dishwater. If you want coffee stop at Mickey d but there are much better choices in this town. read more

Coffee Cup This is where the locals go in Hamilton and from the surrounding area in the Bitterroot Valley. The food is simple and ample. Many of the older retired men eat most of their meals here as they have daily specials for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Be a cultural anthropologist in watching the customers. There are cowboys, trades guys and families. A good number of people from Salmon, Idaho eat breakfast here on their monthly early morning drive to accomplish serious shopping in Missoula, an hour further north. Everyone is nice and friendly. The owner is there every day and must have warehouses full of decorative "collections". Sometimes there are dog things, chicken and rooster things, toys. There will be photos, tapestries, hook rugs, objects and anything with her particular theme. Some of it is really antique, but that is her thing and it is interesting to take in. Their waitresses are wonderful, keeping up with orders and accommodating any particular customer preferences. And they know all the regulars and their preferences. Newspapers are in a rack at the end of the counter. The menu has standard stuff and you can go no-carb, substitute and even get senior, or smaller portions. Ask for what you want and they will do your best. Sunday mornings are very popular, so get there before the church crowds come in around 10am. Oddly, their coffee is weak and watery, but their customers are used to it and that is not going to change. It is not unusual to ask the waitress to do a "double pot" which is double strength, approaching decent coffee. But you better drink more than two cups each! Or you can get a shot of espresso to man-up your java. Pies are home-made and wonderful. If it is in season, like rhubarb, they make it. We many times have pie for breakfast or take come pieces home with us for later. Don't miss the pies. And they make a really mean sticky bun, goopy with raisins and melted sugar. Oh boy! Remember that this is rural Montana, so you are eating with real people who work hard to make a living and have a lot of pride in being responsible for them. Friendly is normal Montana behavior, so acting out or being angry/upset is inappropriate. If you have a problem with the food or service, which I doubt, take it up quietly and with dignity and they will take care of you. You get respect by giving respect. Way watered down too, like a teabags amount of coffee was used. And this was from a 'fresh pot'. I think I feel strange. Parking is easy, and I see top sirloin for $13.45. I want to spend my money in a place that takes more effort (although by no means was service bad) in the big, little things. This is your typical down-home cafe. It's a favorite for a typical diner breakfast. the eggs and bratwurst is really good, and a favorite of mine, and my husband loves their biscuits and gravy. Since they seem to be known for their baked goods, instead of toast one morning I ordered a muffin, and was hugely disappointed. The muffin was not fresh, was dried and despite the waitress claiming that they were "baked that morning" - the obviously weren't. However, I've seen their massive sweet rolls being served, and am sure those are as amazing as they look. I'd give it a 3.5 star rating because of the muffin but a 4 star on everything else. read more

I ordered a meal with fries and asked for the fries extra crispy. The waitress came back with my food and the fries were barely cooked. I asked her to take them back and cook them again and she responded that the cook said he put new oil in the fryer and that's the best they can be cooked. My family and I would go to the medicine tree twice a year. We are Native Americans from the Bitterroot Salish and we do frequent there. They have accommodated to our seating arrangements in the past. This last time I called before we were scheduled to meet as a family, they turned us away. My family is not broke and we Always leave handsome tips, grateful that we could stop in and eat there when we were passing through. This time however, we were not welcome.
