I just discovered Birdie's when looking around Halifax / Dartmouth for a true long ferment…read moresourdough bread. Most bakeries use yeast along with the sourdough starter to help speed along the ferment and shorten rise time. I was extremely pleased to find that Birdie's does not use any yeast and makes a true sourdough. This gives those with IBS an opportunity to eat bread again as the long sourdough ferment reduces some of the digestion issues that gluten causes. We took a Seedy Sourdough and a White Sourdough and a Pain au Chocolat for good measure. On our drive home I said, "Damn, we should have bought more sourdough as these two loaves will not last long". The taste is fantastic and I highly recommend Birdie's.

I was happy to hear we'd get a new bakery near the Woodside ferry (not far from Dartmouth General, NSCC Waterfront Campus, and the NS Hospital), and yesterday I popped in to see what was for lunch. Running short on cash, I couldn't try some bread as well as something to hold me over for the afternoon, but for $7.50 I picked up a very healthy, delicious, and filling tex-mex (special of the day) "grain bowl" made with wheat and other grains (millet?), corn, black beans, green onions, jalapenos, a savoury spicy dressing, and because I asked if there happened to be any cheese around, some old cheddar grated on top. It was substantial, tasty, and very fresh! They have beautiful looking breads that I'll be back to try soon, as well as house made granola and a small selection of pastries. I almost went for a goat cheese and vegetable galette for my lunch before I spotted the grain bowl lunch special. Pain au chocolate was on offer along with a couple of other pastries still available at lunch time. The selection is only going to grow, so I look forward to a future visit soon. The shop space is light and airy with lots of natural sun and glass and light coloured wood all around. There are a few seating options including a big couch, cafe tables, and a breakfast bar in the window to really soak up the sun. Neighbouring lunch options include Habaneros, Cheese Curds, and Subway in the same business block, so a bakery offering sourdoughs and whole grain breads is a nice fresh option!
