Mark and Cohen Financial saved us after we were declined for a mortgage from a national lender. Mark was strongly recommended to me by a friend after I had already committed to the national lender. Mark nonetheless took my call, despite the fact I was simply seeking assurance I was going to approved. He asked a number of quick and pointed questions, had me upload some data, and within a matter of 15 minutes he determined I was probably going to be declined despite the lender telling me otherwise. He told he that he hoped he was wrong, but that his knowledge of the lender gave him serious concerns about my status. He ended by giving me some valuable advice and information about my credit, and the process with the national lender, and told me he'd be there if anything went wrong. Mark was absolutely right. A month later, we were declined from the national lender. Mark took my call immediately and represented he was pretty confident he could get us covered. The next morning, before 9 a.m., he called me and told me he had us approved unofficially, but that I could count on him. Within a few more days, it was officially confirmed by his alternate lender. He stood by us the entire time. His team was super responsive and detailed. And we ended up getting the mortgage at a very good rate. In a way, this review shortchanges Cohen Financial because I'm leaving out all of the specific times Mark and his team stepped in to get us what we wanted and needed. Mark's energy, insight and "can get it done" capability is obvious from the first 5 minutes you speak with him. He has connections with dozens of lenders and can get you deep and detailed information from them while you are on the phone with him. It's a continuous display of extreme competence. read more

Contacted Mark because a friend of mine recommended Cohen Financial for a HELOC. After a brief call with Mark he asked me to email over some tax info, which I did promptly for his review to to see if we'd qualify. The next day I got an email saying he could do the loan and also received a hard credit inquiry notice from Credit Karma telling me they pulled my credit. I was surprised, so I emailed him immediately asking if he had authorized my credit to be pulled, as I had not discussed this with him. He literally pulled my social security number off my tax info and submitted it without asking me. Wow! But... He said he'd be willing to do the loan, so no big deal? Right? Wrong! Mark forgot to ask me which STATE our home was in... Whoops! He didn't even have the ability to help us if he wanted to. I ended up emailing him one last time to see if there was anything we could do and he immediately asked me to jump on a call. On the call, he proceeded to review everything AGAIN and tell me he COULD do the loan... Not realizing AGAIN that I lived in a different state. Madness! Not to mention I am now stuck with a worthless hard credit inquiry on my credit report. Be warned about these "yes men" who don't have any attention to detail. Are you sure you want to sign a mortgage with people who can't bother to lookup the state you live in, or ask permission to pull a credit report? :-/ read more

And today we found out that he has been checking our credit scores, which our new refi people told us about. We contacted him and demanded that he stop because it is illegal to do that. After having worked with Mark Cohen to get me my original mortgage, I decided to refinance two years later. For months I submitted documentation that he and his assistants requested. I was offered a decent rate and decided to proceed. However, each time I submitted the required documents, I was told there were more required. Cohen Financial dropped the ball on the process and it took so long that the bank would not honor the original locked rate that the bank had promised. Mark Cohen then promised me that he would make good on the difference - just send some more documents I was told. Then I was told, in writing, that the loan had been approved. Then I was told in writing by his assistant, Noel Page, that they had managed to negotiate a better rate with the bank and I just needed to send over a few more documents. After a 6-month period of complying with all the requests for documentation, and at significant accounting expense to me, MARK THEN STOPPED RETURNING MY CALLS. I left him about half a dozen messages, each time I was told he would get back to me "in 5 minutes" and he never did. Emails that I sent to him went unanswered. This would have required little more than common courtesy - a virtue that Mark Cohen clearly does not have. I see from other reviews, that this seems to be a common practice as soon as he believes there is no money to be made off you. To date, I've had no explanation, no adverse action notice (which is a federal violation) and no correspondence from Cohen Financial as to what the issues (if any) are. BOTTOM LINE: Mark Cohen continually makes promises regardless of whether or not he is able to deliver on them. If he is unable, to deliver on them then rather than tell you about it, he prefers to take the cowardly approach of not returning calls. ZERO, ZERO, ZERO STARS Yelp really needs to allow people to give ZERO stars for places like this. Unprofessional, disorganized, and no accountability. I worked with Seth at Cohen Financial on my home loan, and it really seemed like the guy was totally in shambles. Kept asking for documentation I've sent him 2 or 3 times already. Am I paying him to be his secretary or organize his files? I don't think so. Not only does he not keep his things together, when he has them, he doesn't even read them carefully. Telling me, I don't have proper documentation of the numbers, making ME point out where it is on a file that I had resent him 3 times. These were tax returns from H&R Block, not the deadsea scrolls. Shouldn't be that hard to find the info you need, especially for a "professional". Then, literally on the day we were suppose to close, he's emails me about a bunch of basic documents that he still needs. And again, some of the stuff he was asking for; he already has. And the others he's asking for them for the first time. Seriously? We've started to work on the loan approval over 30 days ago and they wait until LAST MINUTE. Causing me to take unpaid leave day from work to scramble for the thing he wanted. A month after escrow, I did not receive any envelops any payment stubs to pay my mortgage. So when I dropped off the first month's check, I asked Seth to look into it and he said he would. Two weeks later, nothing... So I contact them again, but this time they told me that they sold the loan, which is normal, but that I needed to figure out the payment stub problem with the new owners of the loan myself. So here's my question, what in the world did I pay them for? Push around papers (sloppily) and offer no customer service??? I guess I should be thankful that they gave me the number to call instead of making me google it myself. They obviously don't understand or care that they're not running an arcade or a bowling alley here. This is a mortgage where peoples financial lives and future are on the line. Their website touts that they were voted in Los Angeles magazine in "The Best of LA - Hall of Fame" in 2005. Well I got news for them. That was 8 years ago and now things definitely ain't the same as they were. And if your realtor recommends these guys to you, I would probably take a second hard look at your realtor, TOO! read more

I've been keeping Cohen Financial in the back of my mind for the past 3 years, after seeing their ads in LA Times touting that they cater to self-employed and small business owners, and specialize in loans based on bank statements. After a long delay, I'm finally ready to purchase. E-mailed Mr. Cohen an introduction letter giving a little background on myself and my situation, asking what's the next step (application, I know). No reply. Wait another week. Nada. Nothing. So I thought, well, OK, maybe Mr. Cohen is busy. I'll e-mail one of the originators at Cohen. Again - nothing. Not even a robot reply 'we have received your email and will get back to you ASAP as we are SUPER busy over here in BH'. No reply saying F off, you're too small a fish for us (loan was relatively small, big down payment). Nada. Nothing. Wait another week. Try the submission form via the site. And guess what - SURPRISE! Also no reply. Now I know, yes I could call them, or even stop in over there on Wilshire. But if they're this unprofessional responding to e-mails, how will other aspects of the loan process be? I see looking on their site that they had many $2m loans closed recently (or so it's claimed), so I guess my little mortgage is too piddly to bother with a reply. After reading the mainly positive reviews here (real clients? friends?) mixed with the few negatives, I wonder what is really going on over there. Maybe they do offer great service, if you're shopping in the $2m mortgage region. Shalom, dear Cohen brothers, I will be seeking a different mortgage broker. UPDATE: 2 months later - Just applied at two other mortgage companies, both were nice and professional (as it should be), and got pre-approved for well OVER what I am even planning to spend! His assistance and other colleagues are also very responsive. I have asked them to draft numerous pre approval letters given that the house buying process is so convoluted and it's difficult to close a deal.
