After my harrowing experience more than three years ago at another location, I have been loyal to the Brooklyn Heights location. It was time for my annual eye exam, so I finally made it in after changing my appointment twice within a week without hassle. I checked in, confirmed the accuracy of my insurance and contact information, then was escorted to begin my preliminary eye health assessments on two devices. Once completed, the doctor called me in and then I read a line with one eye closed alternatively. There was no rush through the reading to ensure that I would receive the best possible prescription to improve or maintain and not diminish my eyesight. I browsed through my tower of options and this year chose a blue (my fave color) pair of glasses with the works ...transitional lenses and anti-computer glare. I often find it difficult to choose frames that are different from previous years so I have opted for changing colors. The employees helped me make an informed decision by identifying which of the three frames that I selected was better suited for my facial structure. From start to finish, it took about thirty minutes. I cannot wait to get my glasses in two weeks. Great location. My insurance covered it all. Friendly staff and wonderful customer service. I believe the male individual who works as an optometrist needs a refresher course on civility and how to answer questions without getting nasty. Popped in last week to try on new styles of glasses with the full intention of making a purchase. Too bad one of the male associates was so dismissive and rude. What I thought was playful banter turned quickly into a condescending attitude. I knew exactly the style I was looking for and tried to be as quick and efficient when trying on multiple pair. I asked for him to record the make of the frames I liked the most so that I can return to purchase because I wasn't fully sold. He scoffed and told me he doesn't write things down, better off taking a picture or nothing. I then asked the total for the frames with and without insurance, and he flatly told they don't take my insurance and then walked away without 1) answering the second part of my question on price or even 2) asking directly if I was open to pay out of pocket. Which I was! So rather, I thanked him for his time, which fell to the side because he did not respond or acknowledge my exit. I will not be returning, and I hope that others have a better experience than I did. read more

As others here mention, there is a middle aged "salesman" who is extremely bad at his job. The operator of the business is aware that they have this rude and sad person interacting with customers and that he is also actively losing them money and maintains him is a real choice. A poor choice, for sure. I literally told him I wanted to spend under 1k on my frames and instead of trying to accommodate and sell me a thousand dollars worth of absurdly overpriced nonsense, he did such a bad job of talking down to me and shaming me for not wanting to spend more on "LUXURY" that I only noticed that he seemed shockingly incompetent - until I thought about it later. I won't return, and honestly, have zero interest in visiting another Cohen's Fashion store anywhere. Shame on the owners for enabling such a clown. read more

$98 last year in Dumbo. $215 this year at Cohen's Fashion Optical on Montague Street. Same frames; different color. Same type of lenses. We decided to look at Cohen's this year for frames for our child. We had purchased glasses there in previous years but did not go back after the last pair broke within a few months and we had to pay for a replacement pair. Our child picked the ones he wanted and we ordered them. After we picked up the glasses and got home, we realized that they were the same exact frames we got last year at another eyeglass store in Dumbo but in another color. We ordered the same type of lenses for our child. It was $215 at Cohen's but less than $100 last year! Unfortunately, we will not be going back to Cohen's as we are very disappointed in the fact that we paid twice the price! Talk about being ripped off. To top things off, after making the purchase, when asking the staff a question, his response was "I am trying to work and cannot answer questions." This AFTER making a purchase! read more

The Optometrist here is great, but as many people have mentioned, the Asian male clerk behind the counter is rude and condescending. After, he refused to explain how he was coming up with the pricing based on my insurance coverage, he had the gall to ask me to apologize to him not the other way around. In the past I have found that this same person, would include additional fees for items I did not ask for when ordering glasses, and when asked to explain you can guess the reaction. He bullies people and tries to force them to just comply without any explanation. He should be fired. read more

The male manager in the store was extremely rude to me when I asked him To explain what was in my lenses as I was coming in to get a 2nd pair. He rudely told me to sit down told his assistant to deal with me then when she started answering my questions he told her to stop helping me & "take a break" I habe lived in Brooklyn Heighrs for 20 years I love the sense of community and had recently switched from a different local Firm to try out Cohens as my husband is happy but I am So upset at how rude this man was. I had an awful experience in this store this week after having used the store several times in the last 20 years or so. I noticed that the staff is different than it was a few years ago and there's a sullen, rude young man working behind the counter. I bought glasses from Cohen's four months ago and the frame broke. I went to the store and they said they could put my lenses in a new frame. That sounded good to me but when I went back to the store, the young man told me that there was an $80 charge. I told him that he had never mentioned a charge and he started yelling at me, saying that I was embarrassing him and that I was a liar. He kept calling me a liar as he walked away. The manager signaled for me to leave but never reprimanded the young man for treating a customer like this. Needless to say, I will never use this store again and they clearly don't guarantee their products. read more

I called on a weekday just after opening. I had some questions regarding scheduling an appointment for an eye exam to renew my license. The man who answered the phone was rude and unprofessional. And for literally no reason. You could tell he just didn't want to be bothered answering my questions. He would not give me his name. When I called him out on his rudeness, he totally lost it, yelling, etc. Needless to say I did not got there. And judging by other comments on yelp and google reviews, I am not the only one that has encountered this at this location. read more

Their website indicates they take the insurance, but when you go for service they say they don't accept at the office, but will give you an invoice....guess what? Like any other Cohen's I've been to, it's pretty much the same. The staff was friendly and made the visit comfortable. My one small issue is with the physician. I'm a contact wearer and the doctor wanted me to try dailies. I tried several different brands and my eyes were not having it. they just were the worst. when I talked about going back to the lenses I wore previously i was told the dailies were better. I said they may be better but they do not work for me. I went in on a different day to see the other doctor and he switched me back to my normal lenses with instructions for care. Still wondering why i had to go through months of bad contacts. Besides that incident I overall like this place. read more

I am a new costumer who went to Cohens to get a frame/lens this past month and it has been the BIGGEST MISTAKE I could have made. For context, I had a prescription issued at a different practice I trust in the neighborhood but I went to cohens to buy the frames and to have the prescription filled. After wearing the new frames for a week and experiencing difficulties (such as nausea, headaches, and dizziness) I went to the office that gave me the original prescription and was told that the optical center of these new lenses did not align with my pupils. I then went to Cohens to discuss what could be done to fix this issue. After discussing these adverse reactions I felt with the new lenses with Wai, he completely berated me and refused to calm down even after I told him that I felt he was being confrontational, condescending, and aggressive with his tone and language. I told him that I felt uncomfortable with the manor he was speaking to me more than twice. As a costumer I felt disrespected and utterly taken aback by this entire conversation with Wai. This is the first review I have ever left and I truly feel bad about leaving a negative review for a practice but I just couldn't let this experience go without sharing. There are other places in the neighborhood that provide much better service and treat costumers fairly. It is my hope that this review can help people make an informed decision when picking an optician. read more

I have been going to Dr. Harris for 40 years for my check-up's and I like him very much. However, I just received my EOB and am shocked at how overpriced my glasses were and I feel I was totally ripped off. This is no way to treat a long time customer. I highly recommend this place. I had a prescription for new glasses for my son. I called around to other places for quotes, using my insurance. I got very expensive quotes from other places. From Cohens on Montague, they were very professional on the phone and gave me a reasonable quote. I say Cohens on Montague specifically because I also compared with Cohens at another location and they were rude and quoted a ridiculous price. I had a troubling experience at the Cohens Fashion Optical location at 151 Montague Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201. I am a customer of at least four years, but I refuse to continue giving my business to this company. As an initial matter, I haven't had any problems with the doctor at this location. This afternoon, however, I tried to buy new glasses, but I was advised by an employee at the counter that Cohens does not participate in my new vision insurance plan, the Davis Vision Network. Then, I was told (abrasively) to go buy glasses across the street at a different glasses shop. Interestingly, I had to return to the same Cohens location later in the day to obtain my prescription, and as I was waiting to be seen again, I overheard the same employee who dealt with me, then say to a white, British couple that they DO participate in the Davis Vision Network and proceeded to charge them approx. $732 for glasses after advising that their Davis insurance will cover approx. $300. If I did not witness this exchange, I would not believe it. Significantly, I checked with the Davis Vision website, and they advised that Cohens Fashion Optical location at 151 Montague Street, does participate in their network. I am so upset by this experience that I am looking into complaining to the AG's office. read more

EDIT - I contacted the custom service rep who responded, but never received a response. Other reviews seem to mention the same result. --- Have had great experiences with the eye doctors and general staff here, but my first experience getting lenses has been very different. It turned out I needed progressive lenses, and in every encounter I had with the optician I felt like I was being dismissed and condescended to. My nausea with my first progressive lenses was considered "Impossible" and considered "Possibly due to the weather". With my second pair, when I now had similar nausea issues *and* blurry vision issues (could not read text on signs, needed to lean *very* close to read text on a computer screen, etc) I was told my issues were "Not provable", I basically was being a perfectionist, and he blamed the lighting conditions. (I was in areas with normal lights) Somehow, the "Not provable" issues such as nausea went away when I went back to single vision lenses after trying their progressives for about a month. While he did put the time in to talk to me about my issues, I generally felt like I was being interrogated instead of talking to someone trying to help me. I decided to give up and just use single vision lenses until I found a better solution elsewhere. The pandemic only made things harder to find a solution elsewhere for my issues, however. At the time, back in late December, I was told to come back if I wanted to switch back to the progressives, as they would hold on to them. I called today and found out they got rid of the lenses, which, while understandable, was something I could have been notified of, as I paid additional money for the lenses. Basically, I spent hundreds on progressives that they got rid of without notifying me. I needed them since other eyecare stores said they would need to see my previous lenses in order to understand what went wrong and fix the situation. In the end, I have ended up spending a significant amount of money without any lenses that have helped my presbyopia since I first visited them. The cost of what I paid at Cohen's for my single vision lenses alone (for my existing frames) is 2-3x as much as I've ever paid for lenses elsewhere, and I would definitely say I did not see any added benefit from the extra cost, despite my overall positive experience with the doctors/staff that led me to give them a shot at making my lenses initially. read more

My appointment was at 6pm. I came 10 minutes late and they refused to see me. Pretty ridiculous. I called to confirm my appointment earlier in the day. When I got there they said the doctor made plans for immediately after my appointment at 6:30pm. They could have given me a heads up and mentioned this on the call before I traveled from Queens to get there. What level of quality service could they provide in under 30 minutes if I had gotten there on time anyway? Not to mention when I arrived, the person working in the front was staring at their phone for several minutes before acknowledging me and there wasn't a single person in the store. Kindof rude. Plenty of places to go in the city. I recommend picking a different place / doctor that cares a little more about patients. read more

I really wish I had read all the bad reviews of this place on Yelp and on Google before I came here and spent over 1200 on glasses. These people are incompetent and nasty! They messed up all three pairs of glasses -- reading, distance, and sunglasses. They kept telling me the problem was my eyes. LOL. Can you imagine. The problem was their Optician and their staff! After going to see Dr. Harris for over 20 years, I will never return to this business. While Dr. Harris is amazing, the opticians leave a lot to be desired. After spending more than $600 on a pair of progressive glasses and repeatedly telling them that I could not see well, I was yelled at by Wei in the store in front of everyone. I went back 6 times so that they could give me a pair of glasses I could use but that never happened. I have NEVER been able to use those glasses. This is a public service for anyone in need of glasses and is in the downtown area of Brooklyn. One avoid a shop that is across the street from 1 Metrotech. They tried to sell me glasses for $600. That was with all the upgrades and the pressure to put the glasses on layaway and pay it off on time which I said no and left with my prescription. Fast forward a few months I go to Pearle Vision 154 Montague Street. The nice lady behind the counter insurance and was told incorrectly that I was not eligible for glasses. She then said I should call my insurance company which I did and found in fact I was eligible for glasses. She said if my insurance was cleared I could get a good pair of glasses for about $75 after my insurance co-pay. So I go back to the store after speaking to my insurance company 1199 SEIU, she was not there so I left a copy of my prescription and copy of my insurance card and plan to come back tomorrow. Then something said to Google Cohen's Optical which I did would you believe it was across the street at 151 Montague Street just steps away. I go in they check my insurance, I find a pair of glasses that are completely covered. Before filling up my prescription for my glasses the gentleman behind the counter said he they wanted to check my eyes because the prescription was a little unclear, I really didn't want to have another exam because I didn't want to pay for it they said they wouldn't charge me but they just wanted to make sure that I have the correct prescription. So I go in and let them check my eyes sure enough I had the wrong prescription they had me down for distance when it should be for reading I have a stigmatism not distance problem I've always had a slight stigmatism. Since I was in a hurry and I had a long day after going on a job interview, getting mail and needing to get to physical therapy I just had the glasses sent to my P.O box since I'm not in a hurry to get them. I can read fine without them it just help when I looking at a computer too long. The charge to have them mailed was $15 which I didn't think since the glasses for free because of my insurance. So in conclusion if you're in need of glasses and you're in the downtown area go to Cohen's Optical at 151 Montague Street well you won't get ripped off and they will give you what you need and not try to upsell you ridiculous add on"s. I normally don't write reviews but this really was deserving of one. I had such an unpleasant experience today when I called the Montague location on April 20, 2020. To briefly explain the issue I am currently self quarantined I'm a teacher who works from home and I'm covered under UFT health insurance. Every two years under the UFT insurance we are issued a certificate for a optical eye exam. My certificate was just issued again on March 30th, 2020. My contact lens prescription has since expired from the last time I was able to go to the eye doctor and I'm currently working from home with no glasses or contact lenses and its extremely difficult. I called to explain this to a doctor at the store and was not able to get a word out of my mouth. Dr. Wai proceeded to cut me off several times and not let me speak he also told he did not care what my concerns were that he would not okay a prescription for me contact lenses because I am sick with COVID-19 and need to go to the hospital. I do not think it was appropriate for him to tell me I was sick and diagnosis me for something he isn't even certified in to do so. He was extremely rude and nasty, very belittling and it's not the service I am used to at that location usually everyone is very pleasant. He told me that he would not okay my expired contact lenses prescription to walgreens.com he then proceeded to tell me that I should mail him my UFT certificate so he could pick out a pair of glasses and send them to me for $179 all this without doing an eye exam he would use the expired prescription to do so. I told him I lived alone and couldn't do that and then he said well at this time you don't need to worry about glasses or contacts you need to worry about getting better. But doesn't my eye health matter? and also the fact that I cannot see without my contacts. I understand that he is a doctor and may be doing what he thinks is best but I do not believe doctors should speak to their patients in this manner. It was extremely hurtful and he was being very bias suggesting that I may have COVID-19 when he did not test me for it. Never ever going there again extremely disappointing! read more

The eye appointments (and doctors) are excellent and have always worked out in terms of prescriptions and contact lenses that are well-priced, meet my needs and easy to use. They try their best to leverage my insurance to reduce costs. Rene and his colleagues, who work in the front, are just great! They are helpful, kind, give good advice and are always upbeat, charming and accommodating...they always remember me and my daughter too. it's a great experience and this kind of service matched with great personalities can be come by these days. read more

The doctor was fine. Pleasant. Unfortunately I left the shop feeling disappointed because I let myself get ripped off. Profit is one thing but I was gouged. The way the numbers kept changing, felt like I was in a shell game. What baffles me is that how don't they realize that this is how you lose customers. The nice thing about moving into a neighborhood like Brooklyn Heights is finding places like Cohen's, where they treat you like neighbors and friends. Having relocated from LA my wife and I were both in need of eye exams and new glasses and actually found Cohen's through yelp. They definitely live up to the host of five star reviews on this site, starting with frame stylist Doyen's calm, friendly and informative demeanor. Doyen was extremely helpful and accommodating in suggesting changes for my wife's lenses -- a blue light coating to aid in eye strain from staring at a computer screen all day -- and in allowing me to use a pair of frames I already had purchased earlier for my very specialized lenses. I was also taken with the professionalism of their licensed optician, Wai, and appreciated the time he took in making precise measurements for my new lenses. My previous visit to an office in Los Angeles had been a nightmare, forcing me to wear three year old glasses to see properly. Wai took extra time to make sure the focus point on my lenses was centered correctly ... and as of today I have much better vision with my new glasses. Finally the actual examination with Dr. Jaime Chan was both educational and meticulous. She was calm, efficient and friendly ... which with my eyes -- high prescription and astigmatism -- is definitely welcome. I now have new glasses and contacts and my wife has much better reading glasses. We both highly recommend Cohen's in Brooklyn Height and thank them all for their incredible service. read more

Great visit. The staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. I came in to have a pair of sunglasses adjusted that I have not been able to wear since they would slip off of my face. Other optical stores told me they weren't able to fix them and sent me away but not this place. I felt hopeless and I am so glad I found this place. My sunglasses were adjusted in a matter of 5 minutes and fit me perfectly. The gentleman who helped me was extremely knowledgeable about the lenses and was able to fix my problem. I've got a pretty strong prescription, so I was nervous to go to a new doctor when I moved here, but I can't say enough good things about her. Her professionalism is matched across the board by the staff who handle glasses. Rene really took his time and never rushed me, and his colleagues were helpful weighing in with opinions. The gentleman fitting me was also very good and made sure my glasses were perfect. I came here looking for new glasses. The man that helped me, Wai, scoffed at me when I asked if they carried a particular brand. He made me feel as though I was being judged and essentially making me feel bad and uncomfortable. When I did find some frames I might consider I asked if I could get the model number and he refused and said that he would remember them for me next time and I felt he told accused me of trying to find them for cheaper on the internet (he said something along the lines of you're just going to look them up on the internet). I have great insurance so this doesn't even make sense. My intention of walking in here was not meant to feel like a POS. read more
