The experience during the eye exam wasn't poor. Was great actually. But the underhanded sales tactics from the front end ladies is right next to car salesmen. Lady told me my glasses would be 500$ more than usual due to a custom bevel design i wanted on my glasses. Keep in mind I've gotten these exact custom order lenses done for these EXACT frames in the past for less than 300 multiple times. She said the reason why was because they get this type of custom bevel work outsourced to cartier. Reason why it was underhanded: she ONLY said that because my glasses, ( a pair of james oro buffs ) look almost identical to cartiers Buffs. She even referred to them as such as soon as i pulled them out of the case. She genuinely thought she was dealing with Cartier glasses. She was trying to claim cartier themselves would work on my "Cartier" glasses through cohens fashion optical as a third party. Only problem is, they aren't and never were Cartier glasses. They're james oro. I never corrected her and just laughed my way out of the store with my free prescription. Its an Absolute joke, considering the other Cohen locations have put these same lenses in these same EXACT frames with the custom order for the bevel for under 300 for me for YEARS. Including 2 sets last year.... They tried to flaunt the "Cartier" name as if it was worth the 500$ up-charge. meanwhile the brand should've never been in our conversation to begin with past a simple phrase like: "hey, these glasses kind of look like Cartier's. But i can tell they aren't". But no, they Couldn't even tell. Even the manager came and spoke to me about it to try and sell me. Just used the first glance of the glasses appearance to justify a up-charge; without even fact checking to see if they're reasoning for the up-charge was sound and justified. This place is a scam. Every pair of glasses is marked up at least 2-3 times the actual price. For example, they have the Oakley chamfer frames marked as $499. Meanwhile they are a $215 frame. Unfortunately, I didn't do my research before hand and paid this absurd mark up. I tried to get a refund for the frames or a price adjustment and they said they couldn't do that. They said, "We don't control the price, sorry." DO NOT GO HERE. Totally dishonest business and taking advantage of unaware customers. Needed to get a quick eye exam and booked an appointment for 6:00 the same day. Went there only for an associate to tell me I was late for 5:30 I had told them I booked it for 6:00 and showed them my appointment so where they got 5:30 is beyond me. These are the worst most unethical unprofessional eye glass company I have ever encountered. Talk about buyers remorse this company is a big scam. Don't ever go to any Cohen's! They do not care about customer, only about money. After I went to have my eyes checked they over prescribed me glasses worth $800 which they talked me into like a bunch of used car salesmen. They offered me progressive glasses which when I received them it felt like I was looking out of a fish bowl! Buyer beware they don't have a money back guarantee or any guarantee!! They want me to pay $800 for glasses that I can not use when I only need reading glasses! I addressed it right away and they said that I need to get used to them and give it a month. I went to this store entrusting them as professionals to recommend me and get me the glasses that I needed. But they lied to sell me the most expensive that are worthless to me. I tried wearing them in my house and couldn't . I later went back and the same optometrist in their store told me that I only need reading glasses. So then I said ok so let me pay for them and take these glasses off and I will just pay for them. They said no!!! They didn't give me what I needed which was reading glasses and forced me to keep them. Now I have their credit card company calling me and harrassing and demanding I pay for glasses that are worthless. I disputed it twice and the credit card company said that it was resolved after nobody resolved anything with me. They are going against my credit and I'm such an honest person who would always pay for my bills bit these people are unethical without a soul!!! I have a business and would never force a customer to pay that is not happy. It is better to wipe your hands clean than carry a bad name and reputation. Ive spent over 3,000 dollars in this store on Cartier glasses. I've had a problem with each pair. The screws on the temple tips are constantly getting loose which causes the tip to separate from the frame. Whenever I bring the eyeglasses back to the store for adjustment, I get the look of annoyance like here she is again. I'm the one that's annoyed. Everyone is friendly when you're making the purchase, they tell you if there's any issues just bring the glasses back no problem. When you bring them back they look at you like you stink. One of the sales girls had the audacity to ask me if I'm taking my glasses off correctly as if I'm a child. I told her the only glasses I have issues with are the ones I purchase from this store. I get bored wearing the same frames all the time so I switch them up frequently. I only wear LUXURY DESIGNER glasses, I have 9 pair in total and the only ones I have issues with are the ones I've purchased for this establishment. I didn't think I would have such a problem with getting a pair of glasses but my experience here was a nightmare. Let's start with its jam packed during Covid, the do not follow the insurance price list and make up the prices as they go (make sure you get a price list from your carrier before you go to any eye glass place), I was informed that my glasses will be ready in a couple of days- a week tops, that never happened. I paid for my glasses and waited, and waited and waited. Then I decided to call the insurance company to find out what was taking so long, only to find out that my script was never even processed. When I called to tell Cohens optical that, they denied it and blamed it on everything else but their negligence. I don't recommend this place at all. Literally no reason to come here. There are tons of other optical stores in the mall. I recommend the one closest to Macy's. Avoid this place at all cost. Service is equally as bad. read more

I love the entire staff. Always helpful, always ready to offer support and a quick, thorough eye exam. I loved them so much I had to bring my husband in for his first exam. When it came time to choosing his first ever pair, I kid you not Bregitte, spent an hour helping us decide on the bast frames for his face. She made it quite comical in fact! I have to say, of the number of vision locations I've been to, this Cohen store really gave me stellar customer service. They were really willing to bend over backwards to help me not only pick out frames that I really liked, but they didn't make me feel like it was all about "making the sale". Yes, I ended up spending more than I intended, but I didn't feel at all coerced, but felt really good, walking out. 2 yrs back i purchased a pair of glasses and insurance, they were Tiffany frames. Glasses broke, tried to use the insurance and what a nightmare it was dealing with this Cohen's location. I had to contact the home office to get my issue resolved and a new pair of glasses. Present day - started having horrible headaches, went to a different Cohen's location for an exam. Come to find out that the Staten Island Mall store gave me the WRONG prescription, hence causing my headaches. IMO - Done on purpose and out of Spite for me contacting the home office to make a very well deserved complaint re their inattentive staff and a store manager who never took the time to return my phone messages for over a month, and blamed her staff for not getting those messages. To describe their staff as unprofessional is an understatement. I'll never go back to this location even if my entire order is free of charge. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere. It'll not only save you money but you won't have to deal with the incompetent workers at Cohen's. First off, I have an astigmatism in my eye. And I understand my contacts will more expensive. This place charged me $60 per box for Acuvue Oasys for Astigmatism. You can get them for $35 online at Visiondirect.com so I asked them for my prescription. They wouldn't give it to me! They had some BS rule where they'll give you your contact prescription only after you make an initial order with them. Lady at the register tells me the contacts I was interested in needed to be replaced once per month. I end up paying $120 for two boxes of contacts (one for each eye). And of course they didn't even have it in stock. So I have to wait a week. (They probably order from discountcontactlenses.com or visiondirect.com and make a profit.) A week goes by and i pick up my prescription. After wearing the contacts for a month, they became blurry and useless around the third week. I consulted with two optometrists in my neighborhood and told me the contacts I purchased can only be worn for two weeks, otherwise you put yourself at a greater risk for an eye infection. Remember how I said the lady told me they were one month prescriptions? The brand I chose were made only to be worn for two weeks, not one month. You can charge me all the money in the world, but don't lie to my face when it comes to my health. In my experience, I found it much better to pay about $80-90 (depending on your local optometrist) for a contacts prescription, then going online to buy your contacts. read more

Lens Crafters is great if you need a quick repair or new glasses in a matter of hours. If, however, you are looking for a great pair of glasses and can wait a couple of days - this is the place. I got the most bang for my buck here with my rimless sunglasses, getting anti-scratch coating, anti-glare, uv protection, and transition lenses which turn dark when you are outside in the sun. The staff is very knowledgeable and was even able to determine that my old prescription was wrong (which I got from LensCrafters - go figure). I'm coming back here. read more

This lady right off the bat was showing me styles that were completely unreasonable from $800-900... then when I said reading glasses she goes READING???!! READING???!! And how old are you? This is an update from the last review. They did fix the issue with the glasses. The progressives and the multifocals they pushed for were not a fit and were exchanged. However, a new problem is getting a bill for the exam so I can submit to my Insurance and HSA. The say everything was sent to their biller. However, my insurance has no record of any submission and the timeframe to submit will be exhausted in a few days. read more

My husband and I have been patients for the last 5 years or so. 2 1/2 years ago my 3 year old son needed glasses, they did not have a wide selection for his age. We went in a few weeks ago for glasses for my son, he was beyond thrilled that they had Spider-Man glasses. Susan helped us and was amazing! She went above and beyond to make sure my 6 year old was happy. I myself was there this past weekend for an eye exam and glasses for myself. I am a former employee of the Staten Island mall and have spent numerous years as a salesman and an assistant manager at stores like Sears, underground station, Epic, and Lids. In addition I have made purchases in every other optical store in the mall as well. Stumbling upon this page I noticed a few reviews bashing the store. While everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I feel like these people are forgetting a few things... 1) this is not your typical eyewear store. They are located in a mall...the ONLY mall in Staten Island. They have HUNDREDS of people walking in and out of the store each day. I have worked in the mall for a total of 4 years in the past and have been dealing exclusively with this store because I know for a fact they they show each and every one of the customers that walk through the door the utmost professional service and care possible. 2) Everyone who walks through the doors are promptly greeted with a friendly smile, even if every employee is already assisting a customer. No customer is overlooked or neglected. Once again, they are located in a mall...so there may be a wait time for service due to the numerous other customers...but the wait is well worth it. Full, genuine attention is paid towards every individual looking to improve their eyesight, or fashion style. 3) Cohens fashion optical is a business, a corporate business, just like most other stores in the mall. People complain about merchandise pricing failing to remember the company and it's employees do not work for free. The professionals at cohens in the Staten Island mall have expertly chosen the merchandise on the shelves, saving every customer time from researching the latest trends, classic styles, etc. The price you are paying for the product is not only for the product itself. It help pays the companies lease for the space in the mall, the shipping of the product to the store, the stores electric bill, the employees, oh...and a highly experienced doctor with many, many years in the industry. At the end of the day, the employees of the Cohens fashion optical in the Staten Island mall are in the business of retail. The same type of store as Sears, Macy's, and JC Penny's. The difference is, the products they are selling are used to improve the quality of one's life. The manager, Diane, along with the rest of the staff are all genuine people who care for their trade. The customers that shop at Cohens will leave the store with improved eyesight....and they'll look good doing it. I have been shopping at cohens for years and will continue to do so. I trust their work ethic and motivation as I have never walked away dissatisfied. we have purchased our verilux glasses at /Cohen's in Jensen Beach for years and have been very pleased with all aspects of the program. Yesterday my wife and I,both in our mid 70's and when arriving we were in shock. Of the 10 workers only two had masks. The inside looked like a fire sales with few if any customers wearing masks and not keeping apart. The wall of glasses open to anyone to touch and put back. No hand sanitizer anywhere. Needless to say we left. As we walked through the mall other shops had barriers to entrance, limiting the number of customers to enter and only when they could serve you. Hand sanitizer at the entrance and all employees wearing masks. We found this setup through out the mall. At the nail palor next door and Lens Crafters. This lack of concern for the public health seems careless. read more

I was very skeptical about coming to this place due to the horrible reviews that it received. I only chose to go here because I was getting headaches and really wanted an eye exam, and they were all that was open. Went in and within seconds I was greeted by karla and asked to fill out LOTS of paperwork for an eye exam, but ok......Standard I guess. Filled out the paperwork, waited 2 minutes and was brought in by Karla for the first part of the exam. She was so sweet, professional, & patient while I kept blinking my eyes, when I was trying not to. Then after that the Doctor brought me in for the second part of exam. He was SO NICE!! He did a complete exam, answered ALL of my questions and was very pleasant. I forgot his name, gentleman in his 50's kinda salt-n-pepper hair. I went at 7:30 pm on Thursday night 10-1-15. After that I had to pick out my frames. That is where I encountered Bella and a pretty blonde Russian lady who then helped me pick out my frames. They were both also so nice and awesome to work with.
