Very happy with my reading glasses but I was strongly told that I needed distance glasses for driving. The first doctor who examined me told me that I would get in trouble if I wasnt wearing glasses and got into an accident while driving The second doctor gave me a weaker prescription. My regular ophthalmologist told me I don't need night driving glasses at all and also gave me a weaker prescription for my readers than what Sterling recommended. So I went back and asked for a refund but since they're custom, they worked with me to give me other items instead. After listening at length to what the proprietor said, which included that "maybe my doctor is wrong" I have decided never to go back to this store. read more

My prescription for glasses changed slightly. With my insurance I was able to get several discounts. I came here for an eye glasses & contact exam, and eye dilution. The ladies that work here are extremely WONDERFUL and super helpful. Trust all the great reviews for this place!! They were very patient with me when I was deciding which frames to get to suit my face and they are extremely welcoming whenever I had to come back with an issue (readjusting my frames to lay on my face correctly). If you get coupons in the mail to go to Spare Pair, DON'T! Read this review first, I will explain why Sterling is far superior! After receiving a prescription for new glasses, I shopped around like any consumer. I initially went to Spare Pair who offered a complete set for $49 which included frames and lenses. Their selection was ridiculously limited. Their frames were plastic and ugly, no wonder the price was so cheap. The lenses were plastic and had no features. So I asked myself, why would I spend $49 for cheap glasses that will most likely break in a few months? Screw that! I went to Sterling Optical in Hylan Plaza. Alex sat with me and patiently and thoroughly explained the numerous options I had for a new set. I opted to reuse my existing frames and I got the "Deal of the Century" !! Two pairs (existing frames) of lenses... First pair: Bi-focals, poly lenses, anti-reflective coating, UV and Transitions (get darker outside) Second pair: Reading glasses, anti-reflective coating, UV and blue-light filtering. When Alex told the price I nearly fell over, $300 tax included. I immediately took the deal. A few short days later my lenses were ready and again Alex showed me the lens before cutting it into the frame and explained how the "bifocal" lenses work. Yeah, its a learning curve but not much. I chatted with Renata for a bit and a moment later my glasses were ready. The craftsmanship is superb! The glasses, spot on! The service, outstanding! Return customer, OH HELL YEAH. read more

The staff was friendly and personable and happy to let me browse frames without any pressure to buy. When I needed to update my frames & prescriptions they were just as friendly. Explained my options and were honest about what made sense and what was not necessary. Even helped me get the most of my vision insurance. Several years later and I keep going back here for my needs. They have a nice inventory, are never pushy - trust me - I don't do pushy!! They are quick - glasses are ready in a few days. I have been getting my glasses and contacts at sterling for many years. Went in to get new prescription sunglasses. I had a coupon, providing 20% off frames...after insurance discount. At first, they said I could not use the coupon with my insurance discount. Once I showed them that the coupon specifically stated "after insurance," I was told sunglasses do not apply, despite the fact that the coupon did not state same, nor did it state that there were exclusions. Instead of accommodating a long time customer and standing by their own flyer, I was told all of the ways I was reading the coupon wrong and they let me leave. Customer Services goes a long way in my book and Sterling Optical delivers. I had called them in a desperate situation where my contact lenses had pooped out of my eye while on vacation on the east coast about a mile away from their office. At this point they were the third office I had called, all of which said they couldn't help me if I didn't have a copy of my contact lens prescription with me. So I called Sterling Optical and I asked if they would be so kind to give me a spare, placing an order with them of course but just to tie me over. Renata took my doctor information over the phone to check my prescription from my doctor in LA. She told me not to worry about getting it myself that she would would take care it. I thought I needed the actual copy but she said they can verify over the phone, what a huge relief. Once I arrived in the office my sample contact lens was waiting for me, they had my exact brand and number. I couldn't believe it. We joked around a bit and I felt like I had known them forever. They were so sweet and truly were the heroes of my day in Staten Island. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your help, the new boxes arrived in LA within one week as promised. So glad I found this Sterling Optical! As soon as I walked in, the staff helped me right away, they were so friendly, and answered all my questions. The doctor spent a lot of time with me explaining the condition of my eyes to me as well as informing me about how to properly use and care for my contact lenses. I had a hard time finding the right contacts that worked for my eyes, however the staff was so patient and helpful. I also got glasses and the staff picked out a lens that fit my face shape on the first try. I went here under the impression that all Sterling Optical stores were the same. My local SO store in NJ is currently closed due to the pandemic. However, I'm happy to have ended up in this location. The people here are very nice, helpful, and friendly. Although it's possible that more attention was given to me simply because the store is emptier than usual, this may not necessarily be the case. I went to the New Dorp location with my daughter for the first time on 1/17/2020 to buy a pair glasses for her. I explained to the man behind the counter that I had Davis Vision through medicair and would like to see the selection he offered. Very rudely, he pointed to one shabby row of reading glasses and walked away. I give everyone a chance and asked him if their were other options that i could pay for out of pocket. He seemed agitated and walked to another set of glasses which were a little nicer and said these are $75.00. By this time I'm already embarressed, but my daughter wanted to try one pair on. He handed her the glasses and said rudely "$75.00". I said ok, she will come back tomorrow to give you the prescription. He became angry and started asking, rather demanding...get them now. Then said 'are you looking or buying?" He then closed the showcase and walked away. That next morning I did not want to go back but my daughter wanted the glasses he offered and begged me to go back with her because the man made her uncomfortable. I went and when we walked in he rudely said " give me your insurance card". As I handed him the card he asked me " you have a problem? Yesterday you had a problem, today you have a problem" I then looked at my daughter as to say, lets get out of here, he said " look at me, dont look at her, Im talking to you!". I left at that point and walked across the street to America's Best Glasses. My own father has never spoken to me like that. I left feeling humiliated and angry. How he is allowed to speak to customers like this is beyond me.. Is it because I had Medicair? Please do not give this location your business. He treats people like garbage and I also believe he was about to charge medicair the max for my glasses on top of the 75.00, for glasses that could not be more than 200.00, tops. Please avoid this store, Im disabled and worked my whole life until the last 3 years, due to a spine injury. It was hard enough for me to even walk to the store to get the glasses. He had no reason to treat my daughter and I with such contempt and disrespect. Please give your business to people who are kind and deserve it. read more

I recently bought a Groupon for a contacts fitting exam with 3 months worth of contacts included (but note, patients with astigmatism will receive none of this benefit). After calling, making an appointment and showing up, I was instantly prompted to purchase the contacts through their group. In addition, you had to purchase a minimum from them in order to get your written prescription from the exam. I'm not a first time contacts-wearer and I never had to do this with my first optometrist. This company's prices were also much higher than those you find at online retailers. They tried to charge me more than double online retailers for a single box and then fluctuated their price range minimally when I was hesitant.) I left, and proceeded to return the Groupon. The only reason I tried this place out was because my primary eye doctor did not offer the fitting service anymore and the Groupon offer caught my eye - I never would have otherwise. Word of caution, try to find another place that doesn't try to pull a fast one over your eyes! Edit: I called them up saying that requiring a consumer to purchase through the group was not allowed and that a prescription was required to be given to consumers/patients after an exam, and they basically responded by saying "store policy" and denied my services entirely.
