Been a few years since our last visit to Cold Comfort. They're known for their ice cream sandwiches ($9.00). Surprisingly, only four ice cream flavours were available. Tried a sundae ($7.00) and two scoop cup ($7.00). We picked vegan mint chip (standard) and vegan raspberry (good). The fact that they call this two scoops is a joke. Tiniest scoops we've ever received. Sundae was okay, unmemorable. CC doesn't come close to Parachute Ice Cream's offerings. read more

The burnt sugar ice cream nestled between two golden graham cookies that are perfectly chewy, even with the cold from the ice cream... a lovely balance of sweet and salty, just splendid! The only reason I'm giving 4 stars is because everything is just so dang expensive. $9 for an ice cream sandwich? They are pretty sizable, but that is a pretty penny to pay. I do not understand why this place gets four stars. The ice cream here does not taste any better than an average ice cream shop. Also, because this place is located in an alley on the back side of a building, there is no dedicated parking lot. Street parking can be hard to find. This is our second time at Cold Comfort after having been here many many years ago and unfortunately I was left disappointed after my most recent visit. The ice cream shop is currently located in an alleyway can be a bit difficult to find. The first visit I had was amazing as we got ice cream in a cone but this time they didn't have any so instead decided to get a pumpkin pie ice cream sandwich and a roasted peach sorbet popsicle from Kid Sister. Both cost $8 and I highly recommend for people to avoid getting the popsicle as it was SO SMALL compared to the sandwich. The popsicle taste was alright but definitely not $8 worth. On the other hand, the pumpkin pie ice cream sandwich was not bad and had good flavor but giving my extreme disappointment with the popsicle, I could not give it more than 3 stars. read more

We tried several flavours such as: plaine Jane, Choc O Clock but our favorite hands down Golden Graham. Words cannot explain but odds are you won't be disappointed. J recommended we check out another ice cream shop in town, Cold Comfort, so we dropped in on a late Sunday afternoon. They're located right beside Fernwood Coffee Company. The inside is small but it's a cute spot. There's three small stool chairs in the back but that's it for seating inside. You can find more room outside out front or in their parking lot. Love it. Lots of items to choose from: ice cream sandwiches, scoops, pints, pies and cake. Everything is handmade and pricey. Pints are $12.00. They do have some unique flavours such as vegan horchata and dairy free Hoyne dark matter. They had 7 flavours of ice cream to choose from when we visited. No cones here. They're part of the zero waste revolution so make sure you compost your scraps if you stick around to eat your ice cream. - Local pumpkin and Hoyne dark matter ($5.00 two scoops) - the pumpkin tasted just like pumpkin pie. The dark matter was just like the beer. Different texturally as it's dairy free but good. We liked it but the amount of ice cream you get is small. Very small. Worth a try. Crazy that they've made over 400 flavours since they've opened. read more

Came here on a Tuesday evening around 7pm and found that they were sold out of a lot of flavors and sold out of cones. We sampled the tamarind and cardamom and the Dark Matter but didn't like either one. It would have been nice to try other flavors, but we were scraping the bottom of the barrel so we didn't order any ice cream. They did have more flavors in pints available, but we didn't want to commit to that much ice cream. The person behind the counter was very nice though. I always feel good after eating Cold Comforts ice cream! They vegan, gluten free options are always my go to and they taste nothing like what you would expect for gluten free, vegan ice cream and ice cream sandwiches. The icream is always sweet, rich and creamy, while the cookies are soft, chewy, and just melt in your mouth! The ice cream flavours are all so unique and very local, which I love, love, love!!! And they all pair so well with the cookies they make for their sandwiches! Whenever I go I spend at least $50 just so I can stock my freezer with yummy gluten/dairy free goodness! Although I haven't explored as much as I would like of Victoria's ice cream options but compared to my global experiences, Cold Comfort is truly top notch! As you would read from many of my other reviews, I've recently been nurturing a robust ice cream obsession. I had conducted a 5 stop ice cream tour of Vancouver city prior to having visited Victoria. I hadn't even considered trying to find an ice cream stop while here but my brother in law's girlfriend suggests this great visit after I told her about my Vancouver ice cream adventures. Wow! I was not disappointed! Cold Comfort is GREAT! What I really love about this place is that the owner is very adventurous with exploring new flavours. I actually ordered more than one ice cream but the absolute standout amazing experience was the Rosemary and Sour Cherry! This was the first time I had experienced a savoury herb in ice cream and it's absolutely opened my mind! I would even say that this experience was the moment I decided that I had to start becoming an ice cream maker myself so that I could explore the weird and wonderful and leave behind the regular that we all mostly live with. If you find yourself in Victoria or even live here, you MUST visit Cold Comfort! P.S. As I'm about to hit post to finish this review, I noticed a low star review in which someone is criticizing this place because of the weird flavours. I definitely enjoyed the one that I got (vanilla bean with chocolate chip cookies), but I missed being able to choose my cookie and ice cream combination. I have been frequenting Cold Comfort since it first opened since I've been in Fernwood over 25 years, and bars were 3 or 4 dollars. However, today I bought a brown sugar ice cream which was supposed to be like caramel and it was terrible. Even worse is the price- 10.00. I think there is enough very high quality ice cream available in supermarkets and niches that this is now the bottom end of ice cream. The sandwhich was overly sweet and sugary and quite dry. I found the entire thing completely poor and one huge disappointment- I actually threw half of it in the garbage. Perhaps it was a one off with the flavour I chose but I doubt it. I have always had a stamped card for this business but this is the last time I'll be going there- the crappy ice cream and ridiculous price left me cold. I'm done and will buy from other suppliers who make much better products for more reasonable prices. I've always shopped locally, but this kind of bad quality doesn't warrant the price. read more

They have 7 super cool, handmade types of ice cream every day and so far, have showcased over 400 unique flavours. Get ready to try types of ice cream that you've never even dreamed about, like their White Russian, or their ROYGBIV (a rainbow ice cream with a name that all elementary school teachers will love). I first found out about Cold Comfort about a year ago and every time I pass through its area of the city, I can't help myself from wishing it was Friday. Every Friday, Cold Comfort partners up with another super rad local business, Empire Donuts, to combine their ice cream with Empire's gourmet donuts to create greatness in the form of donut ice cream sandwiches. That's right, TGIF just got a whole lot more meaning. I've seen a lot of reviews talking about their tiny samples, but my experience with them doesn't match up. I recommend checking it out for yourself to make a final decision because I take EVERYONE there when they come to Victoria. The ice cream is all hand made and they have some interesting flavours. Some use dairy, some use coconut milk. They don't offer samples so it was hard to choose, especially as I wasn't sure if I'd like any of the coconut milk-based ones. And they're pricey, which makes it hard to choose wisely. Look, I will make it really simple. If you are GF/DF then you probably have not even thought about and ice cream sandwich in, oh I don't know, forever right? Well, if you happen to be in Victoria then you need to go here 4-5 times in two days like we did. It was not just the fact that the GF/DF ice cream bars existed. Oh no. My first foray into Victoria's ice cream scene resulted in this salted caramel ice cream at Cold Comfort, a small independently owned ice cream shop just off Cook Street (no, I didn't care that it was like 3 degrees out and that I ate this outside ). Two scoops of rich, creamy, full-bodied caramel flavour that wasn't too sweet, with just that hint of saltiness: perfectly balanced flavours. The house-made waffle cone is also very good. It's quite thin, so I was concerned it might be brittle, but it definitely held its integrity (well....apart from me eating it...). The selection is more limited than some of the ice cream shops I frequent in Vancouver, but the level of care they've clearly put into each flavour makes up for this and can't be ignored. I was able to sample all of them, and while I liked some more than others, it was easy to appreciate the craft behind each flavour, especially when the employee behind the counter had such a thorough knowledge of each one. At $7.50 ($5.50 for the ice cream, and a hefty $2 for the cone), this was not cheap, but I think I'd still come back to try something else. So all things considered, this gets an easy recommendation despite the steep price point and small selection, because great ice cream is still great ice cream. Seek with confidence! read more

This place is just... weird. The vast majority of flavours are vegan, dairy-free, or sugar-free, you get the idea. It's not a normal ice cream joint in that sense. Then again, if you want dairy-free, sugar-free etc, then this is your place. A lot of the flavours are very non traditional. Turmeric and Horchata, for example. First time there my girlfriend and I ordered one ice cream. The guy working finally spent the first few minutes while we were there looking uninterested on his cellphone. When we finally got his attention, he was reluctant to let us try any flavours. When he did, he gave us such a small amount that we could barely get a sense of it anyway. The one ice cream came to $10.00. We realized that after the fact that a single scoop is $5.00. He double charged us, thinking we were gonna order separately. When he realize we weren't, he didn't bother correcting it. The ice cream, flavours and service are better at both Big Sister and Parachute. If you want your artisanal ice cream fix in Victoria, go to one of those instead. read more

I got the choc o' clock ice cream sandwich (basically a triple chocolate chipwich) and immediately fell into a food coma. Probably the best ice cream I've ever had.
