As I got older, I became more independent and wanted to go to a new place entirely since my family members were either retired or extremely busy! I called Rich and was honestly very nervous about this place. I hadn't seen a lot of reviews, I didn't know anybody that went but the reviews I saw were all so positive that I decided to give it a chance and I'm SO glad that I did! Right when I walked it, he greeted me and made me feel so comfortable. He was able to give me the exact haircut I wanted and I continued going to him for a few months. I've been slacking on getting my haircut but I'm planning on booking an appointment with him soon. I highly HIGHLY recommend this salon!

The front concierge left as well, and now there are new staff members. For one, the main person that is and should be the first impression to the salon - the front concierge manager, Dawn - is completely imposing, rude and unprofessional. Then the rest of the staff seems pleasant, but definetly made to feel rushed and non cared for. Here are a few reasons to back of my statement: To put things under perspective, for this visit I had just requested a simple haircut & blowdry. Nothing else. 1. To start, I had multiple text notifications from the salon sending me reminders that I had an appointment. I showed up on time, and I was told otherwise - that I was not showing up on the system nor did I have an appointment. I was ready to leave since Dawn did not provide a resolution or an apology for the salon's confusion until a stylist passed by and took me in. 2. When I was brought in, I was just asked "what do you want?", no proper consultation and all was completely rushed. Then, I was told my hair was clean so I didnt "need" a proper wash (per the package description). So no wash, cut dry and then blow dry quickly without any product to protect my hair from heat damage nor was given the option to request this is usually my preference. 3. At the end, I was told the total for this 15-20 minute service was $80+, I had stated my experience and there was not a care in the world from Dawn, her response was " the standard fee for blowout and haircut is $80". I felt this was pretty high and not appropriate for the bad customer experience I had, but I still paid and left the salon. I went back and looked at the list prices displayed on Substance's salon's website. Here's what it states: - Under Women's Menu: "Classic Cut + Blowdry - Shampoo & conditioner, Haircut & Blowdry : $55-65" - Under "Salon Menu" ' "women's haircuts Level 1 = $69, Level 2 = $74, Level 3= $80, Level 4=$84. I was NOT provided a reason to the fact I was being charge for level 3, the answer provided was "this is a standard fee". Which clearly, what is written on the website does NOT support this statement. 4. Oh! To top it off, as I was paying without asking for what had happened - Dawn (instead of apologizing for the confusion and the MESS of a customer service experience) began speaking and said she didn't know what had happened and imposed that maybe I had done something wrong! IT'S ALL IN WRITING AND THE APPOINMENT WAS SET THROUGH THE TEXT REMINDERS THAT THE SALON PROVIDES. The whole experience was COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE AND I WILL NOT BE RETURNING nor recommending this place to anyone in the Rutherford area!! It's quite sad, because this used to be my home salon and I loved all the staff and how cared for I felt everytime. I would always be listened to completely, cared for and consulted, never rushed and kicked out the door like today! Now I have no choice but to find another salon that cares for their clientelle, respects, consults and treats each individual as top priority.

I was a little nervous because I had never been there before, and wanted something pretty drastic--a light ash blonde balayage which is reaaally hard to get on dark Asian hair. Plus, my hair had been previously dyed and was a pretty orangey color to start with. So they would have to color-correct that as well. Marwa was super patient with me and answered all my questions. The shop normally closes at 7 pm, but she stayed till around 9:30 pm (!!) to make sure everything looked PERFECT before I went home. She wanted to make sure my hair was lightened enough first, then brushed through it again with darker dye to make sure the transition looked super natural. And she threw in a quick trim in for free! So sweet of her! I felt bad I kept her so late but she really did a great job. My hair came out beautifully and was the perfect pale ashy color that I was looking for. Nobody has ever been able to get my dark, thick hair this light before! Plus all the orange was GONE. It was a miracle! For the cherry on top, when Gabe was giving me instructions on maintenance etc, I said that I'd never heard of a wet brush before. With that, he pulled out a new one from a box, and gave it to me for free! I've never had such great service at a salon before. And the results were beautiful! I'll definitely be coming back here in the future. 5 stars!

It used to be good.. but lately it's a hit or miss. I went for a root touchup and since it was last…read moreappointment i was hurried up, they didn't even want to dry my hair fully. And then when i came back i leaned on my couch and noticed black stains on my cushion!! I touched the back of scalp and color from the scalp came on my finger so basically the shampoo after color wasn't done properly and there was still a lot of color left. I was so displeased. I went back. It was raining and really cold that day I still went back, the salon was closed. I wrote them an email next day and they just responded with a sorry on the email and saying they will talk to the girl who shampooed but I think even if they were a teaching salon the main stylist should have checked if the service was done properly, it felt like negligence and rushed service. I was not feeling well that day, and after that I had to wash my hair again at 9 PM on a very cold day, only because they didn't do it properly, i had an early morning flight next day and this totally ruined my mood. I expected them to offer me some refund atleast as service was so dismal.. when I had left 40% tip as well. Nothing like that not even a call from them for apologizing properly when i was an old customer.. This experience left such a bad taste in mouth, the color also stained my nails before my hawaii trip. I'm not going back

I had keratin done here about 1 month ago. I've used all the keratin safe products and wash my hair…read morerelatively infrequently, and the treatment lasted only 1 month. I've never had a keratin treatment last for such a short time. At at charge of $300, that works out to $75 for each week that it lasted. Shortly after he completed the treatment I immediately noticed numerous "missed" spots. He offered to re-do those spots and squeezed me in the next day and put some of the product on my hair, flat ironed it and told me to leave those pieces over night before washing it out. I've been using the product that Eryn uses for more than 10 years and never had such a poor result. So it's not the product. I've been using only keratin safe products for 10 years as well. So it's not me. Eryn is a great guy and a very nice person. However, his application of the product and the service was very uneven and can only be attributed to User Error. I wasn't going to write a negative review because I really liked Eryn and I like the salon, but like I said, I've never had a keratin treatment applied so haphazardly and inconsistently and therefore wash out in only 4 weeks. I wrote this review so that others don't make the same mistake I did by getting the keratin done at this salon.
