Since domestic animal control has moved to the building on horseshoe Drive and under the authority of Jamie French and crew at Code enforcement, the entire enforcement operation has gone to the birds. They have not been able to attract enough workers and so dangerous situations where pitbull's roam freely on the streets and in one case that an Amazon driver have occurred. It's a dangerous situation for the public and should not be tolerated. Those people like the commissioners that decided to make this move on ridiculous reasons and those who are in control of this operation since the move have not been rep, reminded even though people in the public have been severely hurt. read more

This is a really nice operation. The animals have large kennels and lots of outside play areas. Everything is really clean! The staff seems very helpful as well. My only complaint is that it's very difficult to adopt a dog that is high in demand. They only allow a single person to be on the waiting list for a dog, so if you are not first, you basically have a difficult time. read more

My husband and I have rescued 7 cats in our 23 year marriage and recently lost our 16 boy. We were down to one cat and wanted to bring home companions for her. We went to adopt two kittens and fortunately, they had quite a few to choose from. The volunteers were very friendly and knowledgeable. We picked out our two, 8 weeks old male and female siblings. Two days later the male started having watery feces. I took them both to one of the vets on a list given by DAS for a complimentary exam (must do within 10 days of adoption). Took in a fecal sample and was given $150 worth of medicine for my little guy. I was told both had a fever and that my male had a heart murmur! It is unknown at this time if it's congenital or transient. I was beyond surprised and given material to take him to a specialist in Bonita Springs. I immediately called DAS to tell them that I have a kitten that could have serious health issues and how could they allow him to be adopted without revealing such? The girl who answered the phone was less than sympathetic and said "We aren't able to test for every medical condition". I told her all the vet or tech needed was a stethoscope! She then transferred me to the voicemail of Meredith, the facility manager. I left a detailed voicemail explaining the situation and that regardless of what had occurred, I would be keeping my little fur-ball and give him and his sister their best lives ever. I guess was that if I had returned him he would have been either passed on again to an unsuspecting adopter or euthanized. Well, it's been over three weeks since that call and I've yet to hear from anyone! I love my two crazy kitties, they are adorable and so much fun; but my advice is to be aware that if you adopt from here, you will make an animal very happy and God bless you, but.... you may not be bringing home a truly healthy pet. This is the second time I have tried to get info on dogs that are on their website. The first time they did not call back and by the time I called again (and again) the dog already had 3 people waiting to adopt it. Today I was interested in another dog so I called and left 2 messages (the recording said they would call back); they did not call back - after I had held for about 45 minutes this time. They would probably be able to adopt out more pets if they would only get back with people! read more

The service here is really nice. I've been here multiple times now and while it does break my heart to see all the cats and dogs here, its hard to connect with the people when they already have assumptions about your intentions to adopt and especially foster. I'll never forget this volunteer named Audrey. She was nice to me at first but when I mentioned fostering a kitty she assumed I was only fostering cats to "try them out?" maybe it was the way I word it but she was getting a little passionate and uncomfortable for me to even try to say my situation is unable for me to adopt on the day. I get you guys have a job to do by convincing people to adopt but it is not my intention to foster to "try anything out". I would foster because I can't all the way adopt a kitten on the same day of me just going there. I had a hard life up to this point and today with Audrey was not at all in my list of things to be stressed out over. My home life is not ready for a cat on the same day of me going there. That's all I was trying to say but much like the bad people in my life I had to recently cut off I had to stop a conversation with her by turning my attention to the cat I wanted to hold and the volunteer Tim? Was super kind and understanding. He's amazing! The other lady I spoke to, I never got her name but she was nice too. It was only Audrey that gave me an emotionally hard time. Maybe ask more questions? Maybe see it from my end too that I can't adopt right away? It breaks my heart already being here but I wanted to help these sweet little babies socialize and yes, I know you all hear the same song sung by different people but I am NOT most people. Audrey really wasn't kind. She was kind the first time I saw her! I went there last time with my ex and she was sweet and funny but today, I don't know man...definitely wasn't the same person I spoke to last time. I remember faces and names very easily too. Audrey unfortunately made an assumption about me and for that, I'm sorry for. But the last thing I need in my life is people assuming my actions. Had enough of that. My apologies Audrey. Truly. Absolutely appalled by DAS. Brought in a pregnant stray cat because she was sick hoping they would be able to help instead they scheduled her to be sterilized WHILE pregnant! She was probably only a couple days away from giving birth. After pleading with them over the phone multiple times over an expanse of weeks, they told me she had her kittens, when they had previously told me they sterilized her (meaning the kittens were aborted). Stating that cat colony populations are bad that was their justification. I offered to take the cat and her four kittens back to care for them but was told they are shipping her to West Virginia! Told there's nothing we can do about it since we signed that she was a stray cat which we had to in order to get her care! read more

The website below says they offer affordable euthanasia services and yet when my friend took her 12-year-old dog in (who is arthritic and can only walk w/a harness that she needs to pull up on, and is incontinent [wearing diapers,]) Nicole, a vet tech with a biology degree (not a vet,) told her that she needed to go to her vet and come back with a permission slip that my friend was ALLOWED to euthanize her dog. When did that become a thing? It's not listed on their website as of 5/14. It is going to cost my friend $235 to have the vet euthanize her dog on Sat (before she goes to work.) The fact that my friend said that the dog's legs collapse when walking - Nicole said that was HERESAY! An owner saying that her 12-year-old arthritic and incontinent dog cannot walk by himself most of the time is considered hearsay? My husband has had Parkinson's for 31-years: sometimes he can walk, sometimes he can only crawl. He also has Lewy Body Dementia and Alzheimer's: sometimes you can hold a conversation w/him, sometimes he's talking to a chair. Nicole had the gall to say to me, "If you're such a good friend, why didn't you come in with her?" I did offer to go but because of my husband's PD and dementias, my friend didn't want to add another burden to the already upsetting task of putting her dog down. Plus she had a dental appt to get to (which she had to cancel due to the time it took at DAS;) bringing my husband would've slowed her down.//My friend had a ripped aorta dissection surgery in 2004; she's not supposed to lift more than 40-pounds (which is what she has to do when she lifts the dog up from the ground.) TAKE ANOTHER DAY OFF FROM WORK, and then come back.//I took a dog to DAS for the same reason and had no issues; they euthanized my 12-year-old terrier and didn't make me jump through hoops.//In this financially fragile time when people haven't been working for 2-months, the fact that she had to take off from work, and now she has to lay out a couple hundred dollars instead of the fee that DAS posts is ridiculous, and it's not on their website. Nicole was rude, has no customer service skills, had a holier than thou attitude, and also put my friend in a tenuous situation, forcing her to communicate w/a man that she just escaped from (an abusive relationship.) Nicole was very aware of the situation and yet she and Brian precipitated communication between the abusive man and my friend. She has a temporary restraining order (hearing next week,) but was forced to communicate w/him, thanks to Nicole and Brian at DAS. She left with only her clothes. She needs food, she needs household items, but she now has to pay $235 to have her dog euthanized, rather than the $75 that DAS charges. The man she escaped from took the dog in on Mon and was told that because it was her dog, only she could have the dog euthanized. A deputy shows up at her place of work on Tues to tell her this. He was quite nasty, wanting to know who was going to pay for the euthanasia, told her to call DAS. DAS gives her an appt for Thurs, but when she kept that appt, she was told she needed a permission slip from her vet.//I insinuated myself into the situation because I couldn't believe that she was refused, and I was the one that recommended DAS to her. Nicole was as rude to me as she was to my friend, didn't give a twit about the abusive relationship, or the emotional aspect of having to euthanize her pet, the financial aspect, or my friend's health. There was no caring, there was no empathy. There was definitely no 'women stick together' attitude. There was no kindness. Nicole made up a rule that is not listed on the website below - a current website as of 5/14. Nicole gave me a 40-character complicated website address that I had to write down, and then type into a browser. I finally got to the ordinance page but cannot find what she is referring to, nor shld I have had to. Their website is quite clear. Our taxes pay for these services (plus the $75 fee.) When I picture animal control, I picture someone coming out with a net and throwing the animal into a paddy wagon as they haul off with a scared animal but my experience was the complete opposite. The sweetest lady came to pick up a small dog that was abandoned by my neighbors! It was strange because the dog didn't let anyone touch him and seemed aggressive (probably abused) yet was very calm and liked the lady (wish I got her name). She made sure my boyfriend and I knew he's in good hands and that's all I could ask for. I appreciate the work these people do because it can't be easy and I'm sure they're always busy. Got both my cat and dog there when they were 4 and 6 months respectively. They let us see them and interact with them before we adopted. My husband and I found and captured abandoned kittens in our neighborhood. We have many animals ourselves and were unable to keep them. We brought the kittens to Collier County Animal Services. The staff and volunteers were extremely professional and competent and friendly and caring. Without these people, there would be no place for these abandoned animals!!! We went to DAS to find a small dog. We brought home a charming Maltese. DAS offers 1 free visit to a local Vet. What we found out is the dog we adopted had to have major surgery on his ear ($2700.00) which the 1 month insurance DAS offered did not cover because it was a preexisting condition. DAS NEVER told us of this condition which was very obvious when a Vet examined him. When I brought him back the following week for a shot, NO ONE asked why he had a protective plastic collier on him.
