My wife scheduled an estimate for a skylight last week and Collins Roofing agreed to meet her today at 1000 for an estimate. She decides to take the day off from work today 6/2 to meet them at the agreed upon time. While driving up to Castro Valley she receives a call from them saying they were not gonna be able to meet her because they were only doing 'big jobs' and did not 'have time' to consider our 'small' request. NICE!!!!! Great customer service with snobbery to boot!!!! I see all these 5 star posts but please consider my post when deciding about this company. Seamus showed up to look at the job I needed. He came in at least 30% higher in his ballpark estimate than the other roofers. He did not follow up with a written estimate as he had promised. When Collins roofing did our roof recently, we worked primarily with Michael. From the start, we were impressed with his bid, which was about the same price as the other bids we'd received -- except that Michael immediately saw that our house needed a few extra downspouts and better venting for the attic. (The other bids had omitted to address these additions; I had been aware that both were necessary, but they had slipped my increasingly feeble mind.) When Michael insisted on doing them -- for the same price as the others -- his conscientiousness and his bid stood out. And I'm certain that we weren't the easiest of customers. I asked Michael if, ahead of time, he could deliver the metal nosing that laps over the fascia boards, so that I could paint it on solid ground before it went up. Before the sun rose on the morning that the crew began removing the old roof, Michael was out front with the nosing, and before I could get started preparing to paint, Michael shouted down from the roof to explain that the ridge of our roof had been raised an inch from the standard size requiring that he use slightly larger nosing. He schlepped the regular nosing back and returned a few hours later with the unorthodox stuff, leaving me plenty of time to paint. Meanwhile, my wife (a compulsive student of Consumer Reports) had decided that same first morning that she wanted a different shingle than the brand we'd earlier agreed on. Michael was unfazed. He pulled out his phone. Eight or nine hours later, a truck with a conveyor belt on a boom was delivering the revised order onto the exposed sheathing beneath what had been the old roof. And somewhere in the process, we had decided to add a second skylight. No problem: just another hour or two of Michael's time, clambering up and down from the roof to the kitchen, making sure things were exactly as we wanted -- at the last minute. Michael's brother spent two full days supervising on the roof, and as he installed the downspouts, he explained to me what colors needed to be painted where and left me time to get the painting done. Thanks to his patience, when the job was finished, things were cosmetically correct. When the Collinses turned their focus to our roof, they gave us three days of their full attention. Found out about the two brothers who run Collins Roofing via the Berkeley Parents Network. Fantastic from the moment they showed up on time, to when they gave us multiple options of how we could approach our roof repairs (from a simple patch job to a total replacement), provided a professional quote, and did the work perfectly. They recommended a middle-of-the-road approach, which cost our older 4-unit, 2-story condominium $5,900 total. I spoke to four references they provided before we signed the contract, and all four were rave reviews, including one man -- who says he's been a contractor for 40 years -- who said he wouldn't think of using anyone else in the area. The references told me that their prices are middle-of-the-road. They arrived on time the day they said they would, along with many workers. They did the entire roof in one day and I inspected it. The work was IMMACULATELY done. And ours wasn't the simplest of roofs to repair, as it required the replacement of broken "barrel" tiles on various difficult-to-access, steep slopes -- in addition to retarring the flat area and adding new covers to the vents, etc.. When they left, the entire roof and ground area around the building were completely clean. The workers were polite and quiet. The work is warranted for five years, apparently the standard for the level of work we had done. There's nothing I could think of that would improve the experience.. They're the kind of guys who, when you meet and talk to them, you just KNOW they're knowledgeable, honest, and fair. Trust me. They're the ones to go with. I had a great experience all around working with Collins Roofing. They did everything they said they'd do. Completed the job in 3 days as promised. My new roof with 2 skylights is beautiful, and they repaired an area of dryrot too. The crew was friendly and polite, and kept a clean work site. The total price was as quoted, plus a very reasonable and fair price to fix the dryrot. I would and will hire this company again, because they do more than roofing. My husband and I recently purchased a very old Oakland home that is 100 years old. Alas...so were the gutters! Old and made of wood, none the less. We had Collins roofing replace the old wooden gutters. There were some issues with the down spouts and the odd shape of our front porch. The supervisor, Bruce, really pulled out some creative ability and make it look just fine. They worked like crazy over a Friday and Saturday because they knew we were in for some rain. Collins Roofing was recommended to us by our real estate agent. We were very pleased, from the price (lower than we expected) to the completion of the job. Mostly we just appreciated the fact that they kept us updated and responded to emails and calls promptly, something we've found rare as we've had various repairs done on our house over the past few months. Specifically, they gave an estimated date for the work to start on our roof replacement, then followed up twice to keep us updated on the start date. They brought a huge work crew and completed the majority of the job in just two days. They were professional and courteous and cleaned up very well at the end of each of the work days. Our 1928 tudor house had 3 layers of roof shingles, including the original wood shingles. I had contacted Seamus previously to get a bid for a new roof and he also did some patching and maintenance to get us through one more winter. Extremely happy with Collins Roofing. We knew our roof was near replacement time when we first started looking for roofers, then our recent rains made clear that the old roof was not doing its job. Mike Collins came out, carefully explained the condition of the roof, gave us a quote, and then he patiently answered my many, many questions. The references were glowing, as were all the ratings on the various sites I checked. Collins stands by its workmanship, works with a stable crew, not subs, and the owners are on site during the whole job. They were Covid safe, kept our surroundings clean, and even cleaned off the skylights at the conclusion of the roof install. Went looking for someone to fix a leak in our roof and am so glad I found Collins Roofing. Ciaran Collins was our roofer and he was fantastic. Very highly recommended; everything I hoped to find in a roofer. I called on a Saturday and he called me back on Sunday, came out to look at it on Monday and fixed it on Tuesday. He will really take the time to explain exactly what is going on and what he needs to do to make the repair. There were many problems with our roof, including poor drainage, some dry rot along the eaves, and some basic design flaws. A new roof and one year later we are still so happy with Collins and our roof. Our roof is very funky--a combination of flat and several pitched areas. We tried repairing several leaking spots over the years before accepting that what we needed was a full roof replacement. We had a modest budget, did a lot of research and received several bids for a complete roof replacement. Collins was reasonably priced and they did not exceed their estimate. The hardest part was waiting for an opening in their schedule. Collins is definitely worth the wait! They even came out to patch a leaking area during a downpour when we were waiting for our roof work to start (and they did this for no extra charge) Once here they worked quickly and were very clean. Their crew was also great--I especially loved how hardworking, professional and friendly their team was--I heard a lot of singing and laughing up there as our new roof went in. My only note of caution is not about Collins but just about their recommended contractor (Chris McDermot) who I would not recommend. Stellar company. It is apparently a family business and feels like that from start to finish. Michael Collins came out to inspect and made sure I understood the scope of the work. Their bid was one of three and was very competitive. Our slated date happened right as shelter-in-place was instituted. Seamus Collins contacted me to see if we wanted to postpone. They were extremely accommodating about the start date. Once they started it was all hands on deck. The job got done in two days even though there were areas of significant need. An owner was always on site. The property was orderly and neat throughout the work, and they left areas surrounding the building in pristine condition upon completion. The communication was excellent throughout. Everything about the experience felt both personal (communication and care) and highly profession (work performed and integrity of the process). I really appreciate the great job Collins Roofing did on the new roof I got in the fall of 2013. Everyone was professional and personable. They had to tear off two or three old roofs since the prior owners just kept slapping roofs on top of each other. They also installed two skylights that I love every day. I had planned to get fixed skylights but Micheal Collins suggested that I get the opening kind for just a bit more and I'm really glad he convinced me to. I got several bids and Collins was the best combination of pricing and professionalism. About a year after I got the roof, a neighbor's tree fell partially on my house and Collins Roofing inspected the damages and made some minor repairs right away. Called up for an estimate for a medium-size retail/commercial building. The guy was arrogant as all get-out, and showed very little interest in providing an estimate, saying that most often after all the work they do they never hear back from the customer. I'm giving 2 stars simply for their honesty - even if their customer service could use some work. read more

I have mixed feelings on leaving 2 stars. The main reason is poor customer service and follow up. After getting a proposal emailed, there were errors on the proposal and it had to be re-written. I called with follow up questions about the work and was told my questions were forwarded to Seamus. I never heard back from him. Then on the day of the work, 3 people plus Seamus showed up at 7:30 and did the work. We asked Seamus to check another possible area where water might be leaking and he said he would check it out and get back to us. We never heard back from him about that. I called back 3-4 days after the work was done and asked about the inspection of the other part of the roof and was told Seamus would be notified of my request. I never heard anything back. By 12:30 the same day the work was done, no one said good by or anything and just left. I spent $4,500 for 5 hours of work. Seems very expensive with no customer service or follow up......I will wait to see what happens after our first big rain. read more
