    Fried Chicken Biscuit
    Ed P.

My family and I ventured out for breakfast one morning during our brief stay in Elizabeth City. There aren't many options in the small town, but we did eventually find Colonial Cafe, a very traditional breakfast and lunch cafe. The breakfast menu is full of omelets, biscuit sandwiches, pancakes, and plenty of bigger platters. I settled on the fried chicken biscuit, cajun style ($6.99). Their biscuits are really good alone, but adding some spice from the chicken was an excellent choice. I really enjoyed this sandwich. I also had some of my daughter's biscuits & gravy ($8.99 with a choice of home fries, grits, or baked apples). I would have ordered this had she not done so. But I knew there would be plenty leftover. This was a good serving of biscuits & gravy, again their biscuits are fresh baked and good on their own, but when topped with homemade sausage gravy you can't go wrong!

Food was really good. Service was amazing. Our young server Chloe was so very polite with an amazing personality. We had four different dishes and they were all very tasty. What a wonderful little family ran business.

Came for Saturday morning breakfast thinking it's gonna be fast and cheap. I picked the wrong day. We are told early on that 3 servers called out so it's gonna be a long wait w only one waitress. Not being a hurry I sit down anyway w two kids who aren't the best waiters (bc they're kids.). The people just in front of us right away and their food comes before our order is even taken. We wait over 40 minutes before the cook comes out himself to take the order bc the waitress is choosing to take bar orders and not sure what else before taking anyone else's order despite saying I'll be right back to take that order. Food is really good diner fare, biscuits are awesome and pancakes fluffy. The kitchen staff are nice trying to make up for things but the sole waitress clearly is unable to accommodate a crazy situation even w kitchen staff are ringing people out and delivering food. The diner is an old classic diner and looks as you'd expect. I know the staffing was a fluke but I probably won't return bc it was really mishandled.

This place has really gone downhill. It's sad. We ride down from Virginia Beach periodically for breakfast or lunch because of our previous experience. Today they couldn't even make a BLT, because they didn't have any lettuce or sliced tomatoes and they aren't serving lunch. They don't have the wonderful homemade potatoes, only shredded hash browns. Very disappointing. Even the bacon and eggs today were below average. So we got bacon, eggs, toast and and egg sandwich.

I thought this would be just another little basic breakfast spot. And it is. But they kill it when it comes to nreakfast. I've only been about 3 times, yes for nreakfast, but I never leave disappointed. All the morning time meats are cooked to a beautiful caramelized doneness. The eggs are always light and fluffy, which is always good. You need to try their biscuits and gravy, fluffy biscuits with THICK gravy, yum!! Home fries are good too. I got a side of sliced tomatoes with all my meals so far. I would recommend you try this place out. I will be back for breakfast most likely, maybe even to try the lunch menu.

Breakfast menu. Ate at this local restaurant this morning. Arrived and was greeted with energetic happy staff that welcomed my wife and I. I already felt like part of their family. Ordered classic breakfast with pancake eggs bacon and grits. My wife had cheese biscuit pancake and bacon. Everything came out with 10 minutes and was hot. Bacon was cooked to order and perfect. Pancakes were soft and fluffy and moist. Staff was very attentive and stopped over often. Prices are great which leaves more money for tipping. Thank you Colonial Cafe.

Stopped off here for a quick lunch while in Elizabeth City and I thought the food was decent but not amazing. The staff was friendly and welcoming, though! I had a chicken philly sub, which was okay but a little small. The fries were very good, which bumped this up to a fourth star. Based on the menu and atmosphere, I feel like this is probably better as a brunch stop.

    Good creamer. Coffee is strong.

We always get the same order, well I do at least because I absolutely love their chicken salad, I always ask for extra. I do love their fries over their sweet potato fries. I just feel like their sweet potato fries could be crispier. Their grilled cheese, burgers, salads, and everything else we have tried have been good. I can't remember a bad meal here. Service is good but they are busy, so sometimes I feel like staff can be short. Our server was a young gentlemen this time and he was very kind, thorough, and checked in on us the appropriate amount of times. The establishment itself is very farmhouse pub vibes, they offer single room bathrooms for men and women and they're always clean. They also have outdoor seating for those nice warmer days. This place stays packed for a reason.

On Saturday morning my wife and I decided to try out the newest restaurant in town, skipping lunch and jumping onto the waitlist just added to the excitement. Although Texas Roadhouse has been open for about a month now, they still seem to be packed nightly! We had no trouble finding a spot to park and got in line with everyone else. The outside of the building adds to the excitement and experience, playing classic country and honky tonk. Its style is spot on and adds to the legendary character. After the obligatory amount of time passed my wife and I were shown to our seats, our table was a little dirty and the floor was covered in trash. The appetizer plates were dirty and there was no silverware, but all things considered it was no big deal. After Al a busy restaurant is a good restaurant for the customers and the employees. We ordered our drinks and a blooming onion, the drinks arrived rather quickly along with the replacement plates. We went ahead and ordered our dinner, I ordered a 16oz sirloin rare Pittsburgh style, baked potato and some broccoli, along with a side of horseradish and a side of sour cream. My wife ordered a 8oz sirloin medium rare, baked potato and mixed vegetables. Our waitress took our orders and that was the last time we saw her for the next hour or so. Our blooming onion came and looked delicious! We were both playing a little trivia game and began to dig in. The crunchy parts were good, but sadly the onion. Was both over cooked and undercooked. We ate what we could and did enjoy the sauce, It's a spicy sauce that pairs well with the onion. Unfortunately for me I didn't foresee the lack of refills in my future. Our steaks came out within 15 minutes of our arrival so great speed, The steak was cooked to the right level and was crisp and blackened on the outside. The flavor of the steak was pretty good also, I did lack my sour cream and horseradish sauce. I made due, eating my baked potato and waiting for the waitress to return so I could get something to drink! Alas! My hope was in vain! My steak was good, it was suitably tender and the flavor was good. My wife's steak on the other hand was, how can I put this? More of the consistency of pâté that had been grilled somehow, it was a disappointment and to be honest I've never eaten a steak that had that consistency and texture. She subsided on her potato and vegetables, filling her belly with the sides and a legendary disappointment. We waited about 30 minutes after our food arrived to begin looking for our server, we had seen the excitement of two Texas style birthdays and one round of dancing! What we had not seen was our waitress, not wanting to be rude and just walk up to the waitress stand, I waited for a manager to pass and I stopped her to let her know our concerns, I had to inform her that I was thirsty and had not seen our waitress in about half an hour, but more of an issue than my desiccated mouth was the repulsive texture of my wife's steak, it had the consistency on boiled chicken liver, mealy and squishy texture that was completely unpalatable. After telling her she looked at me blankly and I had to hint to her about payment, I asked wether I should just pay here or should I wait for a check, she stared at me intelligently. I had to inform her that would not be paying for the steak that was brought out for my wife. Now, I understand that a busy restaurant can be a stressful job, and management is doubly difficult. But there has to be a point in which you slow down and make sure your customers are happy, or at least alive. Instead of having the meal gratis as I would expect I was told that the steak would be removed from my check. Not the sides. I know it's a trivial thing but when you as the manager take matters into your hands you could a least not charge for the "legendary"mixed vegetables. Raw broccoli and some slightly steamed carrots don't break the bank but I digress. She came back to show me how she removed the 8oz sirloin from my check , with some apologies and asked us to try the place again. We were gracious and thankful. She left us to pay on the kiosk at the table. As I began to pay I came to the tip screen, and instead of allowing me to discuss tip with my wife in private the manager returns with the waitress, like a hound who wanted to make up for piddling on the floor. Feeling extremely uncomfortable and embarrassed I just tipped 20% and called it a night. As I sit here writing this review my mouth is still dry, although I had the manger at the table I was still not offered another drink, so I recommend this restaurant to all those who are of the toothless nature and those who perhaps bring with them a canteen of water. Please I invite you to have a legendary time.
