While in Downtown Elizabeth City, I found Hoppin' Johnz for lunch. The restaurant is larger than it appears when you first walk in. I was asked if I wanted inside or outside seating, expecting to be put at the bar but was taken to a booth in the back. The place was pretty full so I didn't get the photos I wanted but got what I could when the tables cleared. It is a neat place with the decor from the brick walls to the door wall to the chandelier to the mural. I opted for the fish n chips as I just had shrimp the day before. I was offered chips or fries for the side but I was allowed to substitute sweet potato fries. I liked the fish but I did remove most of the breading but I usually do that as it can be too much. The sweet potato fries were good. My tea was refilled so all was good here and I look forward to returning.

The ambience is very nice. It has a nice flow of candlelight and being able to unwind. Family friendly but also comfortable at the bar after a long week. Highly recommend eating in when you're able. The take out isn't as good as the in house. For the kind of money you spend...the atmosphere is part of the tab. I spent a hundred dollars for appetizer, meal, drink, and tip. Service beyond the bartender wasn't very helpful. Ordered take out a few days after this meal and was a little disappointed. Highly recommend dining in.

We've eaten at this restaurant several times and I have never been disappointed. All the food that I've gotten has been amazing and the staff is always doing their best. It's always fairly busy but I've never had a massive wait and the food is always served pretty fast. The ambiance is so good. Love the entire aesthetic of the building, and every spot we've sat is cozy and comfortable.

Everything is 10/10 every time. Never had a bad experience with the food or service. Great ambiance as well I love Hoppin Johnz. I've been here at least 40 times

Hoppin Johnz is our go to spot in Elizabeth city! We have fallen in love with the city and always end up here for dinner. Generally I go with the chicken and waffles which are fantastic, but opted this time for the Philly and man did it not disappoint. The service is always fantastic and the ambiance is relaxed but slightly buttoned up. Highly recommend checking it out if you're in town

We often drive from Chesapeake to Hoppin' Johnz. It's never a disappointment. The food is always great. Check out the Daily Features.

Quaint little spot with good food. Catfish fries, fried green tomatoes, and cheese fries were delish. Wings were mid. Service was good!

Ambiance is aesthetically pleasing with a country roadside shack motif. The bar area has TVs with sports and a great selection of craft beers and house specialty cocktails. The only drawback is that parking during peak working hours can be tricky with only street parking available as there are lots of small businesses and other restaurants in this area with the same issue. The Food is REALLY GOOD! I had the Pork & Pollock; a healthy lump of pulled pork with two pieces of battered and fried pollock, a cup of slaw and a side of your choice (I got the Cindy's Mac-n-cheese). I also added a side of their hushpuppies, and my only complaint is that my stomach was not big enough to finish it all. Tip: if your hushpuppies come out with their house made honey butter, just ask you will thank me latter. Various BBQ sauces are provided on the table for your meats and sides; my favorite was the sweet Memphis style. If you are in the area and hungry, I highly recommend finding a parking spot and swinging in!

Park and take a short walk because it's absolutely worth it. From the moment you walk in, the customer service is warm and welcoming. It has that perfect blend of Southern charm mixed with youthful energy. It's honestly refreshing to be served by young adults who show such great respect and genuine hospitality. The food was excellent--fresh, well-seasoned, and served in generous portions. Everything tasted like it was prepared with care. Even the restroom was clean and fully stocked, which always says a lot about a place. Overall, it was a great experience, and I will definitely be back again.
