Food is always amazing, staff have had the same faces for as long as I can remember. We stop by here and there when we are busy while in town. We always get the same order, well I do at least because I absolutely love their chicken salad, I always ask for extra. I do love their fries over their sweet potato fries. I just feel like their sweet potato fries could be crispier. Their grilled cheese, burgers, salads, and everything else we have tried have been good. I can't remember a bad meal here. Service is good but they are busy, so sometimes I feel like staff can be short. Our server was a young gentlemen this time and he was very kind, thorough, and checked in on us the appropriate amount of times. The establishment itself is very farmhouse pub vibes, they offer single room bathrooms for men and women and they're always clean. They also have outdoor seating for those nice warmer days. We were lucky and got a table for 10 super quickly and it's located on the corner not too far from the river. Service was fine but waitress kept calling us "sweetheart" and "sweetie pie" and "honey" which got super annoying after the first 10 times. The coconut shrimp was okay. I don't think I'd order again. A bit too crispy. The chicken salad and fries were really good. The chicken and waffles were chicken strips, not a breast, not what you'd expect in the south. Also, the chicken and waffles didn't come out until the rest of the table was almost done eating. Honestly a waffle and chicken fingers should not take that long to cook. Nice little place tucked down a side street in the city. Parking on the street gets pretty full but found one decently close by. Came in with a decent sized group after a graduation and we got sat quickly in little cutout area that was away from others which was nice. Our server was nice but I dont know if something was going on behind the scenes but she seemed quiet flustered and things kept getting forgotten. Some food items also took way longer than others to come out to were most of us were done eating by the time the last plate showed up. I got the pulled pork sandwich with a side of sweet potatoe fries. The fries were really good. The sandwich was good I personally would of liked more sauce but with how slow stuff was showing up i didnt want to add to the things she needed to bring out. The slaw was good on it as well. The applesauce that came with was basically just sugar and I couldn't eat it. I think this was an ok experience. May try to come again with just another person or two not a big group. read more

We're on another overnight adventure. While staying in Elizabeth City, we decided to try Hoppin' Johnz for dinner. What a great decision! We had our dogs, so we sat outside with the heaters on. We thought that was very accommodating. It's cold. We ordered the bronze baked chicken, debris po'boy, and the BLT w/tortilla soup. All were prepared very well, great presentation, and flavorful. We thought the portions were good for the price point. Overall, this restaurant has a great indoor and outdoor vibe. The service was great. Highly recommend giving this place a try. read more

While in Downtown Elizabeth City, I found Hoppin' Johnz for lunch. The restaurant is larger than it appears when you first walk in. I was asked if I wanted inside or outside seating, expecting to be put at the bar but was taken to a booth in the back. The place was pretty full so I didn't get the photos I wanted but got what I could when the tables cleared. It is a neat place with the decor from the brick walls to the door wall to the chandelier to the mural. I opted for the fish n chips as I just had shrimp the day before. I was offered chips or fries for the side but I was allowed to substitute sweet potato fries. I liked the fish but I did remove most of the breading but I usually do that as it can be too much. The sweet potato fries were good. My tea was refilled so all was good here and I look forward to returning. read more

The ambience is very nice. It has a nice flow of candlelight and being able to unwind. Family friendly but also comfortable at the bar after a long week. Highly recommend eating in when you're able. The take out isn't as good as the in house. For the kind of money you spend...the atmosphere is part of the tab. I spent a hundred dollars for appetizer, meal, drink, and tip. Atmosphere: The bar area is our go to location when coming here. Even if we have more than just me and my wife, they have high tables in the bar area that are comfortable and fun to sit at. Food: Update, they don't have many options but the menu rotates pretty often so one day you may see grits with pimento cheese and another day you will see something else. The food here is solid, everything is a rendition of a southern item cooked as a gourmet item from the chef. Service: Sit at the bar. There is a woman that works in the evenings running the bar and she provides excellent service. I will try to get her name next time I am there but she provides great advice on food and drink items. Overall: If you are in Elizabeth City (aka E-City, aka Bettsy City), this is the place to go. Great bar service, (have not sat at any of the tables) good food. Since Ghost Harbor Brewery was closed on a Monday. I had the opportunity to taste the Ghost Harbor Gipsy Tears Pale Ale 6%, which was amazing, the also carried the Ghost Harbor Apollo Golden Ale. Big disappointment because I've heard this place is great. The appetizers were indeed tasty but the mains were not great. Stringy meat in the cheesesteaks and very mid crab cakes with a poor choice of dipping sauce. But the worst part was the service. Horrible. My family and I spent a few nights in Elizabeth City, NC before heading for a week at the Outer Banks on a large family vacation. My favorite meal of the entire trip was courtesy of Hoppin' Johnz, our first night in Elizabeth City. This restaurant was just a few blocks from our rental home in downtown Elizabeth City. We arrived just before their dinner rush on a Friday evening and were immediately seated at a high top near the bar. Soon after the host was letting other parties know that it was going to be a 30-40 minute wait for a table. To start we ordered the fried green tomatoes ($12). The server kindly let us know that the serving size was 3 and offered that we could add another to our order so each member of our family could have their own. There was no way my son was going to try these, so we just stuck with the standard order. Hoppin' Johnz is self-described as new south cuisine, and I think that description fits it well.  These tomatoes were fried in cornmeal and topped with country ham, pimento cheese, and pepper jelly. I have never seen fried green tomatoes presented this way, but they were extremely good! For dinner, I had the heritage farms pork barbecue topped with new south slaw and eastern NC barbecue sauce ($11 with choice of side). The pork was full of a nice smokey flavor, while the new south slaw had a welcome addition of sweet peppers that really made it stand out. On the side, I enjoyed the Brussels sprout slaw which was mostly sweet in flavor thanks to the dried cranberry addition. It was a great meal and a ton of food for the price tag! My wife enjoyed the classic Chesapeake crab cake sandwich, which is a blue crab cake, that was topped with lettuce, tomato, and remoulade ($14 with choice of side). She commented that the crab cake was one of the best she had. And she also enjoyed the side of sweet potato fries dusted with cinnamon sugar and served with apple butter. The restaurant is totally kid-friendly. I can't remember exactly what our's had, but I think there was at least pasta and a burger on the menu. That's what I remember my kids enjoying anyway. Overall this is a wonderful place for lunch or dinner and has to be among the best in Elizabeth City. read more

Located in charming downtown Elizabeth City, just over the bridge coming from the OBX. Visited the restaurant for lunch and could not have been happier with the choice. Upon entering, the restaurant boasts a massively beautiful bar with ample seating as well as pub style seating in its vicinity. We opted for a traditional table and chairs in the back of the restaurant. The hostess and our waitress were warm and friendly. Our waitress was well versed on their specials & their selected brews. As pictured we ordered the recommended Shrimp & Grits and the crab cake sandwich with sweet potato fries. The Shrimp & Grits were the 2nd best I've had anywhere & I've tried them everywhere I've been. The crab cake sandwich also delicious, nicely seasoned and perfectly cooked. The fries were perfect. Absolutely loved Hoppin' Johnz. We picked up lunch to go, and walked a couple blocks so we could eat on a picnic bench overlooking the Albermarle Sound. I went for the Carolina Cheesesteak with shaved ribeye, melted pimento cheese, and carmelized onions on a hoagie with "harbor dust" fries. We also got a burger and an oyster po boy. It ended up being one of those meals where we didn't talk except to say "this is so good." The bread had a great crunch to it, the flavors were incredible, and it was the perfect size. Looked a little small at first, but definitely filled me up. As the waitress came over to hand us our food, she was holding a plate for another table. I made a comment that it looked so good and she said it was their oysters Rockefeller. "You'll have to come back and try it!" I hope to be back soon! As much as I want to come try more things on the menu, the Carolina cheesesteak was just too good to not get again.
