My husband was in the skilled nursing part of Windsor Meade for rehab. The quality of care was…read moreterrible. He waited for 1 hour for someone to transfer him from a wheel chair to the bed. The entire time being in very bad pain. He was told we don't have time for that now. Requested water and was told you don't need water right now. At 10:30 in the morning he still was not dressed and ready for the day. He was constantly berated for the clothing he wore. Whenever he rang the bell for assistance he would have to wait at least 20 minutes for someone to come in and help. Basic human dignity was thrown aside, he was told he didn't need a bed pan or a urinal. They didn't have time for that. Food was served cold or put where he couldn't reach it. They then complained that he wasn't eating. False information was put in his chart and I cannot get it removed. When anyone was asked a question no one could answer anything. The common response was I don't know. Upon discharge we were given a list of medical transport companies that were 50 - 60 miles away that would cost $500 + to transport. When we mentioned this to the social worker her response was those are the names we have. My daughter found an agency in James City County that transports no charge for James City County residents. She found this from New Jersey. Funny Windsor Meade knew nothing about this. Never gave me a list of items that we would need once he was home for example: table for the bed, gait belt etc. I was told repeatedly that he was to be admitted to a nursing home. My response was that was not going to happen. They told me he needed 24 - 7 nursing care and that he had no business going home. Did not approve of our decision to go home. Was given a list of nursing homes in the area that we could investigate once we realized that home was not the place to be. I must say that we have a wonderful team of home health people coming to our house and he is responding greatly to the care he is receiving. I would give Windsor Meade a rating of 0 if I could. It was given a 5 star rating by Medicare. I would hate to see what a 2 or 3 star facility was like.

Had my mom in there overnight a few years back as the result of a broken arm. My mom spent the night on a cot with her head under the sink (which is on the wall outside the bathroom) and her feet in the hallway. She laid there with a broken arm all night long with no medical attention and no pain meds. By morning the other lady in the room was dead. I got my mom out of there immediately. Recently my mom was in need of a rehab facility again, and we decided to give the Gardens another chance. We'd heard good things about the place and that it had turned a corner. And in fact our experience was not quite as horrendous as the first time, but that is a matter of degree. She was in there for seven days and never got any actual rehab. They evaluated her twice, which consisted of having her walk from her bed to the door of her room and back, twice. But there was no rehab per se. She never left her room. I could see her getting weaker by the day and once again made the decision to get her the heck out of there. One statistic quoted to me by a staff member at the Gardens: two CNAs, 60 patients. Let's say it takes 20-30 minutes to get each patient washed up and ready for bed each night. That's 15 hours a day right there. Not a whole lot of time for anything else. And the need is so great. You can walk up and down the halls and hear patients hollering for help.

It's one of the highest priced Retirement Communities in the Williamsburg area and they should be ashamed of the service you get for the prices you pay.

Guests need to check in and have their picture taken. First floor reminds me of a nice hotel. The flower arrangements are real! They offer a theater, activity rooms (pool, ping pong , puzzles etc ). There is also a nice fitness center with a pool and a hot tub. I haven't seen the dining room or library but I am told they have an excellent burger and the library has a variety of different reads. There are different floors depending on the residents' needs. There is assisted living floor , a mental illness floor and retirement community floor. The units are large and customized. The view of the Elizabeth river from the "old" building is gorgeous. I do know they have medical and physical therapy on site too which is very convenient. I've only heard good things about the quality of care. So far I am very pleased with where my family is going to be living out the rest of their many years. I will be visiting often. Lastly, it is very convenient that Dumar's and Orapax are so close. Highly recommend dining there!
