I just popped into the shop for the first time... And I'm so glad I did! The two gentlemen that work there were friendly...and funny. The Younger man Took about a half an hour to show us various coins, which he allowed us to handle, and teach us the history of each one. The older gentleman showed us Japanese collectible carvings that were over 100 years old and had amazing detail. Each line of the bottom of the sandals was hand carved into it. They let me in on a secret: they are opening a museum upstairs in a couple of months. Finally, a space opening up in Boston offering something we don't already have... a "money museum!" Walked in wanting to sell a coin, having done a bit of homework but not having sold gold before. The guys at the counter were professional and courteous. They quoted me a fair price - the best on the street. But most of the people there were buying, and in that regard they had what seemed like a pretty impressive selection of coins, jewelry, and other valuables. I had a fantastic experience buying an estate Tag Heuer watch with Steve, "the watch guy" at Colonial Trading Co. Steve has a wide selection of pre-owned, high-end and more casual watches to chose from at a wide variety of price points. He is extremley knowledgeable about watches and the history of them. He happened to have the exact watch I was looking for in perfect condition. I paid 1/3 of the retail value, bought 2nd hand which feel good for the environment, and supported a local, well established buisness. I was also very pleased to learn that Steve warranties the watches he sells. I had a problem with the crown a few months after I bought it. He sent it to his repair person and gave me a loaner watch while it was being fixed, all at no charge. The first battery change was also free. All-in-all a great experience! read more

A few weeks ago I had a strange experience at this place. I'm a returning customer and had just popped in from a great day and had a look around at the coins available. The clerk behind the counter was very polite, knowledgable and friendly. Just the sort of employee that a business owner would want to have making sales. After having a quick chat with the employee, I asked if there were any British pre-1850s coins. He said he had some in the back and went to fetch them. He brought back a beautiful 1807 George III coin and sold it to me for around $11.00. Everything was great until the business owner came along and said that the coin was incorrectly priced because it had been in the back for a long time. Fine, no problem and yes the employee would have been right to check first. However, several unpleasant details followed: The business owner publicly excoriated the employee instead of waiting for a more appropriate time not in front of customers. I felt very bad for the employee. The owner then turned to me and said: "I'll sell this to you, but come back" in a demanding and unfriendly tone as if I had some sort of responsibility to come back, which I don't. Finally, the owner walked away to his computer to do inventory and continued to huff and puff about the transaction and continued to criticize the embarrassed employee from across the room. While the employee should have asked, the ultimate responsibility was on the shoulders of the owner who should have been more on top of his inventory and updating prices. The owner should never, ever cruelly criticize employees in front of customers. Finally, no serious business owner should demand that a customer return as if the customer owed the business for a favor. There were many wonderful coins and things in this shop and I really liked the knowledgable employee behind the counter. His professionalism and courtesy would make me return. Perhaps he and the owner should switch places? In the end, there are many other coin and antique shops that value treating employees and customers fairly. Quite a shame. read more

5 star shop...hands down. This is one of the best shops at what they do in the entire country. Lou and Steve are both not only trustworthy experts, but also great guys to learn a thing from if you have the time to get an appraisal someday. I have personally been from Vegas and back many times and to all stops in between. If you are looking to buy gold/silver/coins/antiques - especially from the revolutionary era...this is the best place. The shop is actually located on the same street (Bromfield) that the Tea Party happened on (I think!) so ya um historic and awesome. read more

Walking into Colonial trading was like walking into a dream store since last December. I went into by a simple diamond/ruby bracelet, and Ive been almost a weekly customer ever since.This is how much I think about this store. Dealing with Louis has been nothing short of a pleasure. A true gentleman! the respect and courtesy he shows to me and others. Louis and Steve's knowledge base on just about anything is unbelievable. It makes Colonial a one of a kind place.I learn something I never thought I knew about history, objects, price etc. every time I go there. I don't feel the hard sell Ive felt from from others, in which case, I usually walk away. The array of items is endless. Ive bought Boston police badges, sheets of currency, gold/silver coins, jewelry, etc, Louis is has to be one of the straightest shooters Ive ever dealt with. The prices and deals Ive gotten are below retail, I marvel in my buys, I always feel happy that Ive gotten a great deal when I leave. Louis, Steven and Mike take the time, even when their busy, and they are, to take the time to explain things to me, walk me through something. Where can you find that today? The staff was pleasant and professional, they showed me the way they tested my gold and weighted it right in front of me, so I felt very comfortable doing business with them.
