UPDATE: I worked with Donna from the Resolutions Department and she was able to negotiate compensation for my issues. The 5 stars is ONLY for Donna as she seems like the only competent employee of the company. Through the process Donna was empathetic, polite, communicative, and accountable. This is probably the worst experience with moving I've ever had. I contacted Colonial Van Lines to schedule a long distance move from Arlington, MA to San Marcos, CA. The representative was polite and sounded professional and knowledgeable. She assured me that Colonial Van Lines was NOT a broker but a legitimate moving company with their own fleet and told me to check DOT to confirm. I decided to move forward with them with as the mover and paid half of the invoice as requested. On 8/12/2024, another company named "Always Affordable Moving dba East Coast Van Lines" came to pick up my items, NOT Colonial Van Lines. You can read their reviews on Yelp and the Better Business Bureau. The next day, I noticed some surface damage done to my walls but decided to be understanding and ignore it. The real headache started on 9/3/2024 when "East Coast Van Lines" delivered my items to my new apartment in San Marcos. They charged me an extra $337 to load my items onto a smaller UHaul truck to deliver my items since they said they could not fit their primary truck into the apartment complex. This required confusing back and forth communication between the two companies and delayed the delivery by several hours. At this point, I was exhausted and wanted to get the delivery over with. During the move at the destination, I noticed the two movers were not at all professional compared the movers who loaded my items in MA. They dropped several boxes down the stairs, damaged my dining table, and scratched the wood floors in my new apartment by dragging furniture. I literally saw the mover try and carry a heavy box of clearly labeled dishware with one handle which ripped and sent the box down the stairs where you can clearly hear the sound of broken ceramic. I mentioned these issues to the driver and all he said was "file a claim". After witnessing how the mover was handling things, I told him to just leave the boxes and items at the top of the stairs so I could do the rest of the moving myself. I also decided to do the furniture assembly myself because I lost all faith in their competence. I also contacted the account manager that was assigned to my job from Colonial Van Lines to resolve these issues but she could not be reached on or after the delivery date, even after multiple phone calls. She also never returned my calls even though I left a voicemail. A week later I did a more thorough inspection of my inventory and realized that I was missing two boxes, one of which was coincidentally the most valuable box and contained my watches. I contacted customer service and they told me they could not locate the missing boxes and told me to just "file a claim". However, the claim process is laborious and the document requires the customer to agree to the following: "I understand that Colonial Van Lines, Inc. acting as my moving coordinator, bears no liability for any and all damaged/missing items sustained during the course of my relocation and agree to forever discharge said organization from responsibility for the actions of the carrier including but not limited to damaged/missing items." This appears to be a disingenuous attempt to have me formally agree to their negligence and lack of accountability. Moreover, they say they're only liable for 60 cents per pound per article which doesn't come close to covering the cost of the items that were lost. I find it absurd that you can just damage and lose a customer's items, casually tell them to file a claim, and then pretend it never happened. Please stay away from Colonial Van Lines as I feel they misrepresent their business by portraying themselves as a professional high-quality moving company but instead contracts out jobs to less reliable movers. Colonial Van Lines is the most clown-car, Romper Room operation I have ever dealt with. Run--do not walk--away from this company. For anyone considering hiring them, let me explain exactly how the experience works. First, Colonial is NOT a direct moving company as they present themselves. They are very clearly a middleman broker who collected the money, marked up the price, and then contracted the actual move to an independent moving company that did all the work for a fraction of the payment. Colonial added cost, confusion, and another layer of people to deal with, but no actual value. The entire setup felt like a bait and switch. The communication was abysmal. Their operation seems to run almost entirely on canned emails, scripted talking points, and layers of contacts with random employees. Trying to have a meaningful conversation with anyone was painful. You also get trapped in a ridiculous triangle between Colonial, the contracted mover, and yourself. The two companies seem to have no direct communication. Several times during the move, my Colonial "Moving Coordinator" was calling me--the customer--to ask if I knew the mover's status. Apparently I was coordinating the move for the Moving Coordinator. I lived in a congested city and needed a firm move-out date to secure HOA approval, reserve the loading area, and obtain street permits. They did not disclose until after I was under contract, that they would only provide a vague date range and refused to confirm the actual date until 72 hours beforehand. That 72-hour window fell over a weekend, leaving me scrambling at the last minute to arrange permits and building access. Of course this is for their own scheduling convenience, with no respect for the inconvenience to the customer. Then comes the pricing routine. When you first call, a "Moving Coordinator" walks you through a quick, superficial inventory estimate--usually before you have packed anything or have a realistic sense of what you have. That produces an artificially low number that gets you to sign. Closer to the move, a different person from "Quality Assurance" calls and suddenly discovers that the move will cost substantially more. In my case, the original estimate of 6629 lb later ballooned to 8,344 lbs. The actual documented weight ended up 7100 lbs. Of course no refund or adjustment for the difference, but I'm sure I would have been notified immediately if the weight was higher. The entire process felt deliberately structured to get me under contract with an artificially appealing estimate, then reveal the real price, restrictions, and logistical problems only after I was committed. Colonial was a pointless and poorly coordinated middleman whose main contribution was collecting a substantial markup. Once they had my money, they became evasive, disorganized, and remarkably unhelpful. Save yourself the frustration. BEWARE!!!! Do not hire this company for your move!! If I could rate a zero I would. I don't want more people to go through the nightmare we did. We have moved 9 times in the past 26 years, and have never experienced such a horrible moving experience. I don't even think the people who packed our belongings were even movers. They had no idea how to pack. They just put breakables and electronics all together in boxes with no wrapping. They also left our house a mess. Trash everywhere, spit out sunflower seeds on the floors, bottles with sunflower seeds left everywhere, spilt soda on the floor that they walked through and got it sticky everywhere. My husband bought them pizza and they left pizza crusts on the window sills. Not only were many of our belongings broken upon arrival, they forgot a portion of our things at our old residence. Since we moved to a different state, we are now trying to figure out how to get that stuff to us, let alone out of the house we are trying to sell. We have been told many times they were taking care of it, then suddenly they stopped communicating with us, won't pick up any of our phone calls, nor return any of our calls. Absolutely awful! Avoid at all costs. They are a broker acting like a mover. They sent my contract to Posh Moving Services of Las Vegas. Disastrous! First, they gave no information as to how long they would take to pickup my stuff. I was all packed at 8am as I was told. They didn't finish until midnight in THE SECOND DAY! I had to sleep on my floor! Second, they gave no notice of when they would deliver, just 30 minutes. Third, there was so much damage! We moved from Florida to New Mexico. The problems started almost immediately. First the costumer relations manager that was assigned to us, Marin, said they would call us the day before the movers arrived, the day of the move, the day before delivery and the day of delivery, but never actually called us. For the pickup day, (the only time Marin actually called us) we were initially told they would be there Thursday between 8 am and 10 am. 10 am rolls around and we heard nothing, we tried calling Marin but only got voicemail, we eventually had to call the general line and wait for a regular agent. They told us that the truck notified them (at 9 am) that they were delayed until 3pm - 6 pm. WE had to call THEM to find out that they delayed our service, this happened twice more until we finally got the pickup done on Friday (the next day) at 6pm. Our nightmare were not over though, upon delivery we found that colonial didn't properly pack ANYTHING, delicate paintings in with lifting weights, loose jewelry in with an air purifier (yes the loose jewelry fell into the purifier and ruined both), porcelain decorations in with a machete, the list goes on. On top of all of this colonial vanlines tried to get an extra $1800 out of us, because they didn't note down that we already prepaid $1800 at the beginning of the move. PLEASE, protect yourself and your mental health from dealing with this company as a service if you're moving from state to state. We should have done a deeper investigation into this company before selecting them for our move. Firstly, our communication with Anthony, when setting up our move was very professional until, Anthony told us that they weren't a broker, and they didn't use third party companies in the process at all. This is so far from the truth. They absolutely used a third party company ( Zip Van Lines) based in Georgia ( found this out after a deep dive and law enforcement). The pick up went okay, even though they didn't arrive until 10 p.m. and they were supposed to be there by noon based on the first call. The movers were very professional and took extra care with our items. We had all the boxes packed, and beds dissembled, and all they had to do was load and cover items with padding. This was on 6/12. Our items were scheduled to be delivered between 6/15-6/23. We called 6/18 just to check on the status of the delivery, and the customer service person couldn't provide us with any information about a specific date/ time, which was concerning, but we told them that we would call back the next day. We thought that it was strange that they couldn't provide us with more information and began to do more research on this company. There is a Facebook account with horror stories about the experiences people have had with this company, and it's sickening that they are allowed to operate in this manner without any repercussions. I understand that the Attorney General's office in Florida is aware of this company's actions and there are several lawsuits pending. Needless to say, with the deadline date approaching and now we're being ghosted by Anthony and other employees. We found it necessary to reach out to local law enforcement. We explained that they wouldn't even tell us where our property was or tell us when it was going to be delivered. After a call from law enforcement, they provided Bruce as a contact and he finally gave us a date of 6/28, which is five days later than the last date of the original timeframe. The money that we've had to spend on food, no beds, and time away from working trying to get someone from Colonial Van Lines to be transparent and communicate with us has been a nightmare. This company was nothing but headaches from the start. I originally thought I was getting a good deal, but I ended up being charged more at the end with no clear explanation. Over 1000 more. I only moved from a one bedroom apartment. The representative who "sold" me the contract disappeared the moment they got my payment. He told me to watch out for brokers and companies that weigh your load and the company he outsourced was exactly that! What a joke and a scam. I was under the impression that Colonial Van Lines themselves would be moving my belongings from Baltimore to Texas -- instead, they outsourced both my household move and my car transport to outside companies without properly informing me. I will say the gentlemen who delivered my items were kind, but some of my belongings ended up misplaced. I haven't received any update on a lost garage self, or the parts of my couch they lost, or my outside furniture cushions. My couch is splitting in the middle because when they packed my belongings they didn't pack all the legs together so naturally they are misplaced. They did this with multiple items and were not packed correctly. I paid for a full pack you would think it would get done properly to avoid inconveniences like this. I should have done it myself. The insurance options they offer are honestly a joke and provide little real protection. As a single woman moving across state lines, I expected a professional, organized, and safe experience. Instead, I was put in a situation that left me emotionally shaken. I received a call giving one delivery window, then a completely different message from the driver. When I called dispatch, they told me they had no idea who those people were and explicitly warned me not to let them into my home. That sent me into a panic -- I genuinely thought someone might be trying to rob or harm me. Later, it turned out those men were the contracted movers, but the company had dispatched two different teams and had no communication between them. I am sorry to say after 20 moves over a period of forty years this last move was the worst . I would never recommend Colonial to anyone who cares about there household goods. They threw our clothes in wardrobe boxes rather than hang them. Still missing a container of brushes and paint items (not Paint). Pictures damaged which have to be reframed which were costly to begin with. Missing small items like brooms and some cleaning utensils . Very disappointing. Absolutely terrible experience -- especially with Patrina. I initially called to put down my deposit, but things quickly took a turn when I started asking a few clarifying questions about the move. I'm flying cross-country to coordinate and assist with the move, so I asked whether I could request a time block for arrival on move-out day. That's when Patrina informed me that I wouldn't even know the exact move-out date until only 24-48 hours in advance. This completely caught me off guard because this was never mentioned during our previous conversations. I explained that this arrangement would not work for me, as I need to book travel and coordinate with movers well ahead of time. I made it clear that I understood not having an exact time, but I did need a confirmed date. Hired them to do a simple move from MD to VA. They called and confirmed 3 times this week that the move would be Saturday 5/2. Even called me Friday 5/1 at 6p to confirm moving. Said they would be arriving between 8a-12p. At 10:50 I still heard nothing. So I called. They said they'd call me back or I'd hear from the driver. I heard nothing for 20 mins. Called back at the 11:10a again, where they put me on hold for 5 minutes to come back and inform me my move had been rescheduled to Sunday 5/3 because the drivers are running behind. Unacceptable. Said my move window is now Sunday 5/3 from 8a-10a and said delivery would be the same day. It's now Sunday at 9:04a. I've received no calls from drivers (who are supposed to call ONE HOUR OUT) and no one in the office because the office is closed on Sundays. How does a company schedule moves for Sundays when no one is in the office to confirm they are going well or at least happening? Deceptive Practices and Unfinished Service I am beyond disappointed with my experience with Colonial Van Lines. From start to finish, this process felt structured to deceive and mislead customers. Hidden Fees & Upcharging Despite speaking at length with the account manager, Patrina Steward, and already paying a $125 packaging fee upfront, I was immediately hit with additional packaging upcharges upon arrival. Furthermore, the "inventory list" included "extra" charges for items that were already part of my original inventory taken before the move. I was charged an extra $500 for weight when I asked to see the weight ticket they refuse. Impossible Policies Their delivery policy is a complete scam. They require full payment before unloading the truck and force you to sign a document verifying that all items are in "good condition" while they are still wrapped and packed inside the vehicle. It is physically impossible to verify the condition of your belongings under those circumstances. Unfinished Labor & Poor Communication The movers disassembled several items for loading but refused to reassemble them upon delivery. After several painful phone calls to Colonial and the movers, a driver finally returned--only to assemble the treadmill. When asked about the remaining furniture, his response was, "that's gonna take me over an hour and time is against me." He walked out, leaving my home in disarray. Our experience with this company was frustrating, expensive, and deeply disappointing--and we want to help others avoid the same situation. Before we signed the initial agreement, Colonial Van Lines was in constant contact--calling often and answering quickly. But once we signed, it suddenly became incredibly difficult to reach anyone. On moving day, the final charge was way higher than expected and felt like a bait-and-switch. They had gone over everything with us on the phone and gave us an estimate, but when the movers arrived and everything was already packed, the cost nearly doubled. At that point, we had no realistic way to back out--we had already packed everything, informed our landlord we were moving out, and had travel plans like a hotel or flight lined up. Even so, we asked if we could delay the move given how drastically the price had changed. They told us that wasn't possible because they had another move scheduled immediately after ours. We felt completely cornered and had no real choice but to sign the new paperwork. They claimed the weight of our belongings was much higher than originally quoted--something we had no way of verifying. We encourage any reader to look up typical long-distance moving rates and decide for themselves whether $1.73 per pound for a move from Southern California to Chicago--especially with all packing done by us--is reasonable. They also gave us a three-day pickup window, which made planning nearly impossible. We were already into day two without knowing if they'd come the next morning or two days later. Then there was the "shuttle service"--a smaller truck used in areas where a full-size truck can't access the building. The price for this jumped from about $830 to $1,454, and when we asked why, their finance person literally said no one really understands how their system calculates those fees. As for the actual delivery: we had packed our cologne collection in a sealed plastic container. Strangely, all of the cheap colognes made it--but all the expensive ones were gone. The container arrived completely dry, with no signs of leakage or damage. We'll let the reader decide whether it's more likely that only the expensive bottles somehow broke without a trace, or if something else happened along the way. Our motorcycle was improperly secured during transport and arrived damaged. Now I'm busy filling a police report and raising a complaint with FMCSA because of the theft and gross mishandling. Do not use this company. They claim they are not a broker and say they have their own trucks, but if you do not have actual drivers available to perform the job, that is a distinction without a difference. We chose them based in part on that representation, and it turned out to be a lie. We were also lied to about delivery timing. Their sales rep told us to move our pickup dates for our household goods and vehicle shipment to Nevada so an April 18 delivery would line up with our arrival. We relied on that advice and made major travel decisions around it. Later, their account manager admitted that April 18 was never actually possible. The driver then showed us the manifest, which had already listed April 26 as the absolute earliest delivery date because the truck was not even leaving west until April 18. That means we were lied to in order to secure the sale. The vehicle transport was just as bad. We were told a driver had been assigned. Then we were told that driver quit. The vehicle was supposed to be picked up on Monday. Four days later, there was still no pickup, no real update, and no accountability. The worst part was management's response. A female manager called us and was belligerent and combative from the start. She did not offer a single apology, did not help at all, told us we were completely wrong, and told both me and my mother to stop talking multiple times. Because of this company's lies, lack of transparency, and unprofessional conduct, my family is now facing thousands of dollars in unexpected costs and will be without our furniture, clothes, vehicle, and other essentials for over a week. I hired Colonial Van Lines for an interstate move in 2023 and they put all of our belongings in storage and we pulled them out of storage in 2024. It is 2025 and I am still dealing with CVL and their lack of integrity. If you care about your stuff, definitely look elsewhere as you can learn from my experience and that of the other unhappy reviewers here. Most of our belongings have some damage memory from the move. Upon delivery of the items I realize that Colonial Van Lines had outright lied to me about storing my high-end piano properly. I had been promised the piano would be moved with a piano board, stored in a temperature controlled facility with blankets, and crated. I found out that the piano was not stored in a temperature controlled facility, or on a piano board, and had been stored on the keyboard side, slanted. I had told the company early on that I would be willing to hire somebody else that specializes in moving these types high-end musical instruments, and was told that it would be best to keep everything together. When the movers were onsite, I was told that they didn't have the materials to do the crating, or the manpower to perform it. I had to go purchase blankets myself to wrap the piano with, and they told me "don't worry, we've been doing this a long time." In the end, when we brought the piano into the house after storage was complete, there was extensive crushing damage, cracks, and numerous dents in a very high end finish. Contacted an attorney to help me with a demand letter, and Colonial Van Lines has not reimbursed me the expense of repairing the piano, to the tune now of $40,000. I am still awaiting a response from CVL counsel, and their BBB response has been that they have made an offer -- it's expired, and that it was based on 500 lbs -- when the piano weighs close to a ton. An updated offer and a response from counsel, the BBB, or the FTC is still ongoing and the next step is preparation to file suit with a local FL litigator who is ready and willing. read more

I booked Colonial Van Lines at a higher price point because I was assured there would be strong coordination and clear communication with the drivers. I was scheduled for a Friday, February 21 arrival (10am-2pm), so I changed my lease and made an extra interstate trip to get my keys early. After calling at noon for an update and being told the movers would arrive before 2pm, I was then informed they were still across Illinois and would not arrive until the next day. The last-minute change resulted in additional lodging costs and significant inconvenience. At delivery, the movers were courteous, but several items were left disassembled, including my desk, with some hardware missing. While talking to the people at Colonial Van Lines they appear to be helpful, but once you get past the quote and actually need to move the experience goes rapidly downhill. They use independent drivers and the one we got was consistently late for both the pickup and delivery time, he was always rushing to get the job done, and in the process walked through our screen door and also broke a floor outlet cover while they dropped our sofa off the hand truck. The driver showed up in a U-Haul rental truck because his equipment broke down. Our furniture was later off-loaded from that truck to another truck, which also broke down. During the delivery he was due at 8:00 am and showed up at 6:00 pm. And during the off-load process indicated we were wasting his time because he had to wait for us to go back and forth from the storage unit to the front door to open it for him. Very discourteous! WARNING; DO NOT USE COLONIAL VAN LINES They gave me a price then sent a photographer who said he photographed everything in our house. However, when they arrived they brought nothing to crate our important pieces. They were not aware they needed to crate anything, including a 100 year old baby grand. So, they called in a crating company that I had to pay! In my upstairs room, which they knew about, I had 2 steps too many. Another $790. Upon delivery the driver said he could not back into my driveway. $700. Said they were not responsible for the uncrating. They laughed and threw around valuable painting as if they were playthings. After they left we went to the master closet. They had thrown all our clothes into the floor in a pile. This was our 13th move. They damaged more pieces than the other twelve moves combined. Every day a different person called, unaware of any information I had shared with previous callers. They all wanted more money. Would I use them again? ABSOLUTELY NOT. The good thing is that we eventually got our things, with only 3 things missing and the inside of 2 wood bookshelves scratched because the movers had packed garden tools like a shovel and pitchfork into them. Part of our problem was that we should have started researching several month ahead of time and asked to see their contract first, before talking about anything else with the salesman. If we had read their contract carefully instead of listening to the sales person, we would have known right off the bat that the contract says that the company can take up to 6 weeks to deliver! The estimated delivery date has no meaning except that you get a reduction of $30 for each business weekday you have to wait for your things after the estimated window of delivery. (They did deduct for weekend and holidays for us though) The contract also says that they may sub-contract out to other companies as follows: Carrier may use agents/independent sub-contractors on all orders. Unless customer purchased an "exclusive use of the vehicle" option, there is no guarantee that the property will not be temporarily stored or offloaded and reloaded onto a different vehicle then performed pickup and consolidated with other shipments or transported by a subcontractor. It took almost 3 weeks for us to get our things. Communication was not very good, but improved a bit after I complained when no one showed up on their 1st scheduled delivery date without us being informed. I know they knew that the delivery was not going to take place because they never called us to let us know about how we would receive a link to pay for the delivery like they did with the delivery that came through. They didn't admit that they had known the delivery would not take place and did not apologize for not letting us know when we had spent the day waiting and not doing the things we would have done if they had told us the deliver date was being delayed. We ended up paying over 13K, but we were delivering and picking up from more than 1 location. After this experience, we will never use any moving company similar to Colonial Van Lines again, but use pods or rent a truck and do the move ourselves. read more

Hesitant to leave a review, thinking it would not be read by enough people to make a difference but I decided that, if it could save one family having to go through what I did, it would be worth it. Summary; did research and foolishly believed Colonial's posts about their company, years they have been in business and professionalism of their employees. I was looking for specific attributes that led me to Colonial; (a) long-distance interstate mover, (b) large, established, professional entity with their OWN moving equipment (c) a company that pays attention to a few of the important items that I had discussed with them beforehand, such as the truck being 56' long and having a lift gate for heavy items. I never received any this - Colonial only plays the part of a co-ordinating help centre and was not physically involved in my move at all. Without my knowledge and contrary to the discussions I had with someone who claimed to be QA manager at Colonial, my move was sub-contracted to ADI Moving from Phoenix, who totally mismanaged my move. Multiple attempts to obtain assistance from Colonial were in vain, as I paid a deposit, scheduled a move and had no other option but to go along for the ride. In a nutshell, they took two weeks to complete a move that they said would have taken 2-3 days. They completely and intentionally (I have evidence of this) destroyed my boat by slamming the roll-up door on it, so that it would break and then fit in the small truck. After being almost two weeks late, they would not unload the truck unless I paid them in advance, without knowing the state of my items in the truck. They damaged a lot of my furniture, smashed my boat and pilfered my Sonos equipment. After having called them to resolve the issue on many occasions, all that they offered was $146 and then said that I should have purchased additional insurance. Do not trust this company to move you. They moved my belongings from Phoenix AZ to Tom's River NJ and multiple items were stolen and broken. They used a third party company out of Nevada to come pick our belongings up & deliver. No communication regarding a different company "shuttle". The staff called for "updates" at 6:40 when their shift ended at 7 so if you had any follow up questions they wouldn't be answered until the next day- if that! The price was okay- that's what sold me from the other companies. I should have known, as they were very unprofessional. My stolen items were irreplaceable as well as many broken antiques. If you want to move cross country do not use this company. Very disappointed. Might as well have moved myself with a Uhall - as they had to rent one for delivery anyways- charged me $875 for "shuttle" fee when a Uhall costs $200 for a 3 hr job. I hope this helps someone as I NEVER make yelp reviews etc. I was so unhappy. Waited 3 weeks for my belongings with a 1 year old. Our move with Colonial Van Lines (Job #1584220-CV-A) was a complete disaster. What began as a straightforward interstate relocation from Colorado to South Carolina turned into a months-long ordeal filled with deception, negligence, and intimidation. We were promised delivery between June 21 and 27, and explicitly confirmed for June 22 in writing. Based on this, we coordinated travel, housing, and time off work. But Colonial failed to deliver our belongings until July 7, without any explanation for the delay for over two weeks. During that time, they dodged our calls, refused to say where our property was stored, and ultimately delivered damaged, crushed, and carelessly handled goods. Boxes were upside down and broken glass was spilling out--so much for their claims of professional handling and climate-controlled storage. But it gets worse. We were told only on July 3--two weeks after pickup--that 1,000 pounds of our goods were left behind in Colorado. The driver later admitted it was actually more like 2,500 pounds, and that he had told Colonial about it two weeks earlier. Yet they hid this from us until the last minute. These items remain missing at the time of this review. Colonial's response? They offered us $1,100 in compensation--but only if we signed a "Full and Final Settlement Agreement" that gagged us from leaving honest reviews, required us to retract any complaints we had already made, and forced us to lie and say the matter had been resolved. This conduct is not only unethical--it's a likely violation of the Consumer Review Fairness Act. They also demanded full payment before unloading, despite delivering late, incomplete, and damaged goods. Their contract is rigged with clauses designed to limit liability, silence complaints, and trap consumers into arbitration in Florida--even if the move occurs entirely out of state. We were told our daughter's furniture might arrive by June 6, but it didn't show up until June 20 -- two full weeks late -- with almost no communication. We got only two hours' notice for pickup instead of two days, had to cancel hotel reservations, and spent over $1,000 on extra lodging while waiting. After getting several estimates we scheduled a move with Colonial Van Lines. However, after the initial sales call, it was extremely difficult to get clear information from them or responses to my questions. After multiple emails went unanswered, I decided to cancel the move and requested a refund of the deposit--consistent with the terms that provide for a full refund if candidates at least 5 days prior to the pack date. Three emails, two phone calls to the number on the contract that you call to cancel that went to voicemail , one phone conversation with a quality assurance person who promised to send a confirmatory email and refund the deposit, and I still do not have written confirmation of the cancellation--as we approach the 5 day deadline. I am happy that I decided to go with another mover. There is no public customer support email for colonial that I can find and they seem to do all their business through phone calls--which doesn't provide a written record. I will begin with the positives - the driver and his team - were fine. They were polite and helpful; both at pick up and delivery. However, my experience with the Customer Service team was was anything but helpful. After I provided them with negative feedback, a Customer Service Supervisor called to discuss. I welcomed this, but it was at an inconvenient time. I asked if she could call me back in 30 minutes and she agreed. I hurried home to prepare for the call but was left hanging as I didn't hear back from her for two days - this was typical of the lack of responsiveness I came to expect from Colonial Van Lines. My primary complaint was that my "personal account manager" (as promised by the sales resprentative) was never accessible. The voice mails I left were not returned and I when I did speak to her, she was neither courteous nor pleasant. Some Reps I spoke with were nice, others not - it was hit or miss. Overall, the customer service - the lifeline of someone who is moving a full household of goods across the country - was dismal. To top everything off, both pickup dates and delivery dates changed unexpectedly. The dates of pickup where set on either Friday or Saturday, but the driver came on Sunday. The delivery date window I was to 'hold' was seven days, and the delivery was finally confirmed for the last day of this window; a Wednesday. But the driver called me the NIGHT before to inform me he couldn't make it and instead was arriving on Friday! This was two days beyond the "hold date range." With little choice and at great inconvenience, I had to rearrange my schedule and pray that it would not change again. I asked him if he was aware that he couldn't bring the tracker trailer into the gated community for the delivery - he claimed he WAS NOT TOLD even though I had made arrangements for this with Customer Service the week prior and paid the extra fees! Not trusting that anything was being communicated to anyone within this company, I called Customer Service first thing in the morning to confirm the new delivery date of Friday. The response I received from your Customer Rep was "the delivery is supposed to be today!" WTF? Any move is stressful, and a cross-country move even more so. I could go on and on about lack of responsiveness, courtesy, communication and the resultant stress (I have been made sick from this experience). Large Move Unprofessional, Incomplete, and Misleading Moving Experience I hired Colonial Van Lines for a large move under two contracts, and the service fell far below what was promised. Misrepresentation of Expertise: Colonial promotes its "Colonial Van Lines University" as providing expert-trained staff. In reality, the coordinators did not offer the guidance or professionalism advertised. Poor Coordination: The contracts promised a personal moving coordinator. On Saturday, I raised multiple concerns, but by Sunday, no one was available to assist. Logistical Failures: Two trucks were scheduled to arrive simultaneously. Only one arrived. The Claims Director only acknowledged the second truck issue on March 11, 2026, with no prior communication. Improper Handling and Damage: Several valuable items were seriously damaged due to poor handling and inadequate packing. Furniture was not consistently blanket-wrapped, and items were not properly reassembled. Incomplete Packing: Nine drawers from the oversized kitchen island, built-in cabinets, the outdoor kitchen, and other critical areas were left unpacked. Stolen/Missing Items Investigation: Promised investigations for missing items were never completed. Improper Use of Materials: Charges applied for unused packing materials; boxes were reused and mislabelled, and inventory stickers were inaccurate, making it impossible to track items. Failure to Meet Contractual Obligations: Loading, unloading, disassembly, reassembly, and $20,000 coverage were not properly delivered. Overall, Colonial misrepresented staff expertise and failed to provide promised coordination, communication, and professional handling. The lack of timely information, damaged valuables, incomplete packing, missing items, and mismanaged inventory caused significant stress, delays, and loss. 1 Star -- One of the worst service experiences we've ever had. Would give 0 or negative, if possible. Our cross-country move with Colonial Van Lines was a complete failure from start to finish. What we paid nearly $13,000 for was not even close to what we received. Major Problems: Wrong truck: We paid for a 75' semi. Colonial sent a 26' U-Haul that couldn't hold the weight they estimated. Huge delays: The crew arrived 10+ hours late and delivery was 4 days past the contracted window. No communication: No one answers the phone when problems happen. Emails go unanswered. Unsafe/unprofessional handling: Some of our belongings were transported in the bed of a pickup truck at delivery. Damaged & missing items: Broken lamp, torn sectional, missing ShopVac, bed hardware missing, item counts didn't match. Worst of all: Colonial's failures caused us to be in breach of contract with the buyers of our home, who were stuck waiting because Colonial couldn't meet its schedule. The crews themselves were great. The company, however, is the problem--poor planning, broken promises, zero accountability, and no meaningful customer support. Our contact person was very convincing when we spoke on the phone. He assured us that all of the movers and packers were required to attend a training program and pass each class. We were asked if our street could accommodate an 18-wheeler. We were given an estimate based on our contact's viewing of the pictures of our home on Zillow. We felt confident that we were dealing with the #1 moving company in the US as we were told and our move from Indiana to Missouri would be well-handled. In actuality, Colonial Van Lines sub-contracted our move to another mover in Ohio. Colonial gets half the price of the move up front and the sub-contractor gets the other half. There was no 18-wheeler. There were no men highly trained in packing and moving procedures. There was a box truck, two young men from Columbia, and one giant mess! We were told our moving date three days ahead. We planned our time to be ready. Our house was sold and we closed with the new owners on Monday, two days before our scheduled move. While at the closing, we received a call from a daffy male saying our move would take place a day early and they would have to make two trips. Pack one day; deliver the next. Pack the day after delivery; deliver the next. We inquired as to when they could do the move in one trip as their schedule required us to drive from Indiana to Missouri to Indiana to Missouri--a total of 860 miles. The daffy male had no idea when we could be scheduled for one trip. We were ready to move and agreed to the two-trip move. The day of our first-trip move, two nice young men from Columbia showed up in a box truck! One of the men could speak sketchy English. The other could not. All of our packing was for naught. We carefully labeled everything and where to put it. Neither of the young men could read English because our boxes ended up in all the wrong places with the labels facing in and unable to be seen. After the first load was unloaded, the man who spoke broken English told us their boss told them they had to get our second load that night and deliver it the next day. This was about 1 or 2 P.M. and they left to get the second load. Of course, we had to lock up and drive back to Indiana to unlock for them to work loading until around 11 P.M. We had to be back in Missouri by 10 A.M. to unload. We were informed the they had to be back in Ohio that evening to load another move. You can imagine how our stuff was hauled in and unloaded anywhere it could be dropped so they could get from Missouri to Ohio to pick up another load. lf you read this far, you know what I am about to say. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY Colonial Van Lines is NOT a moving company -- they are a BROKER who lies to customers to secure business. I paid for my move six weeks in advance only to learn 48 hours before my move that Colonial had no carrier scheduled and had handed my move over to a completely different company, Fathers and Sons -- the exact situation they promised would never happen. When booking, I spoke extensively with Drexel Benson (ext. 146) who went out of his way to convince me that Colonial was NOT a broker, warning me against "companies who take your money and then hand you off to someone else." He swore up and down that my belongings would never be transferred to a third party, that payment terms were clear, and that my items would be transported directly and securely. All of that turned out to be a flat-out lie. On moving day, an unmarked truck with movers in street clothes showed up at my home demanding additional payment immediately -- again, the exact scam Drexel told me I wouldn't face. My so-called "account manager," Tiffany Harris (ext. 104), acted shocked and promised to call me back with answers. She never did. Not once, but multiple times she failed to return calls. I was then passed to Donnisha Gabbidion (ext. 106), who was not only useless but downright condescending. When I demanded to speak to a manager, it took three days before someone finally left me a voicemail -- without a name, without contact info, and only "available for 15 minutes." When I called back within 5 minutes, I was told she had already "left for the day" and, of course, never heard from her again. Even their so-called "Escalation Manager," Aaron Seusarran (ext. 167), played phone tag until he just stopped responding altogether, despite my requests for a scheduled time to discuss my case. This company is nothing but a dishonest broker operation. They: Lie to secure your money. Outsource your move to third parties without your knowledge. Fail to communicate unless you chase them relentlessly. Change their promises as soon as moving day arrives. Leave you with damaged belongings, surprise charges, and zero accountability. I would not recommend this moving company. I contracted with them to move items from Virginia Beach to Chicago and was assured multiple times by their representative, Carlston Brown, that my belongings would be delivered on August 30th, even though the contract listed August 30-September 8. Based on his promises, I paid a $1,600 deposit, booked flights, reserved my apartment elevator, and planned to receive my items on 8/30. The problems started right away. Pickup was scheduled for 8/29 between 1-5pm, but I got a call just hours before saying they couldn't come. Only after complaining did they show up around 4:30pm. At pickup, I learned my items would first go to Maryland to switch drivers -- something I was never told in advance. Once they had my belongings, everything went downhill. They kept giving excuses like "no movers available," "drivers need to rest," and even "weather conditions" -- despite clear, sunny skies. I was told I would know the delivery date on 9/2, then pushed off again to 9/3. Meanwhile, I was stranded in Chicago during a busy holiday weekend with no belongings and no clear answers. To make things worse, when I tried calling Carlston Brown directly -- the same person who promised me 8/30 delivery -- he never returned my calls. Once the movers began contacting us, we realized that Colonial was not actually moving our stuff but a 3rd party they had contracted (Posh Movers). Three issues occurred: 1) Upon arriving and unloading the truck, the movers realized they had left multiple boxes and items in their warehouse in Las Vegas accidentally. This delayed some much needed items by about a week while they arranged for another delivery. 2) Once everything was delivered, we realized about 13 items never made it. 3) Multiple items were damaged, scratched, and packed horribly. Large boxes had items literally dumped in with no care. Items were smashed. My baseball card collection from 30 years ago was dumped into the box with no care, etc. Upon filing a claim for reimbursement for lost and damaged goods, we found out that the agreement offered reimbursement based solely on weight. So if your item was worth $300 but only weighed 2 lbs., you would receive only $1.20 for it because of its low weight. For all of our lost and damaged goods, we received a check for $21. I should have read the agreement more carefully. Super disappointing and would never recommend this company again. I would have been better off moving the items cross country myself. read more
