Took my new 2022 Tacoma Off Road in to change to 4.88 differential gears. I was extremely disappointed with the factory gearing on a automatic transmission (my 2013 was a manual). I researched this problem and found out this is a common complaint. Too bad I did not know this when the truck was purchased. Colo Axle N Gear said it was a common complaint and recommended the 4.88 option especially at this altitude and stock tire size. They have done MANY of these conversions. The job was performed in 6 hours. GREAT! The gearing was not extreme and felt just right. I feel sorry for owners who do not change their gearing. When the rear axle on my 3/4 ton pickup suddenly started making noise I was really bummed. I figured my next weekend camping trip was canceled. And I assumed I would be out of Thousands of $. Then I contacted Colorado Axle n Gear. I was able to drop my truck off the next morning, and they had the complete axle rebuild done by the end of the day. Complete with all new OEM bearings, seals and a new Ring and Pinion. All at a very reasonable price, a lot less than expected. They even replaced my leaking front pinion seal for only the cost of the seal (labor was free). Al took the time to have me drive the truck to be sure I was satisfied. He then showed me all the old parts and explained why they needed replaced and what may have caused the failure. It has been a long time since I left an auto service place happy. I usually dread the experience. Instead, I walked away completely satisfied, confident that the repairs were done right. I recently purchased my first 4x4 campervan (Ferd E350 with V10) and while incredibly excited with the possibilities my new shaggin wagon presented, after our first family vacation (3500 mile Canadian Rockies roadtrip) I was less than impressed with the anemic nature of the van's performance. I mean it's a V10, right? So I started seeking solutions. After discussing the issue with a few of my gearhead buddies, I decided to look into switching the gearing of the van. After some research on how gearing works and dropping by to see Al at Colorado Gear and Axle, he discovered that the current axles in the van most likely came from a plains state vehicle as it was horrible trying to pull even the lightest grades in the mountains, which is where it's going to be spending most of it's time. Oh yeah, I also had to put bigger tires on as well for that tough guy look which of course also makes a big difference in performance. Anyway, Al talked me through my options and convinced me that a switch in the gearing would really wake up the van. And DAMN was he right! A month and 2 more road trips later and I couldn't be happier. The van flies up the mountains as it should, even towing a moderate trailer. His incredible customer service, promptness in completing the job, and even follow up to ensure I was happy (when was the last time a mechanic did that?!) will keep me recommending Al for any axle work from now til eternity. These guys make it easy. Our driveshaft was going bad. All of the driveshafts online that you can purchase new are all Chinese and I've been told by many people I trust that Chinese parts are bottom of the barrel. Dealer charges $2000+. The auto shop I took the car to wanted $1800 total. Coming here I paid $465 tax included and all it cost me was 2.5 hours to remove and 2 hours to replace. It solved the issue, nice and quiet. Their service is professional, they are very nice and helpful, and their parts come with a warranty. I will remember this place and return in the future. read more

Brought in my Mustang to change out the rear axle for 4.10 gears. Service was excellent, fast, and less expensive than anyone else around. My dealership wanted an obscene amount of money, as did some place in Boulder. CO A&G had me out in 2 1/2 hours, and the price was under $500 for labor and bearings (I had my own gears). I've had no problems since the installation and love the new 4.10s. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED read more

I brought in my 2004 Tundra to Axle N Gear to diagnose my rear differential grinding. Al took my truck on a test drive and went under to check the diff fluid. He determined that my clutch just needed to be lubricated. Al didn't charge me a dime for the diagnostic and after driving my truck home, the problem seemed to have be fixed. After reading several reviews about AL and his shop I decided to give them my business and man I don't regret it at all. Their knowledge and experience were top notch. I had just gotten a lift installed on my jeep and had a noticeable power loss which Al was able to correct for me by upgrading my differential gears to 4.88 and what a difference it made. Not only do I have my power back I also got my MPG back as well. One thing I loved about Colorado Axel N Gear is how quick the turn around was. I dropped my jeep off at 7:30am and had it done and back in my hands by noon on the same day. I would recommend Al and his team to anyone who needs to have their differentials repaired or upgraded. Hands down one of the best shops I've ever had the pleasure of working with. I usually do all my own work, because rarely do you get attention to detail and things done right. Axle set-up is one thing that has always made me second guess my own work. Another shop gave me a low ball price but didn't properly set up the rear end in my Bronco and the bearings failed. Al & Jeff are AWESOME!!! I went to a shop 2 blocks from me and was given poor customer service and charged $50 for a quote after I told them what my problem was. The mechanic there told me it was a track bar when it clearly wasn't. Had to point that out to him...as well as tell them what axle I had. Talked to Al over the phone and explained my situation and he quoted me on the spot. Brought it in and took him and Jeff 1.5 days to complete the job (2.5 days faster than anyone else said). They gave me a great price and Al even went out of his way to get me a key for my locking lug nuts (which I didn't know I had cause I just bought my rig)! Customer service: 10+, Price: 10, Quality (from what I know): 10, Location: 4 (far from me but way worth it!!!). Over-all experience: 10 and telling anyone who needs axle work to go see Al!! Like I told Al & Jeff, I hope I never see them again, but if I do I'm glad I know they are working on my '02 Grand Cherokee off-road rig!! This is an honest shop with skilled mechanics. I was having a problem with my rear differential for a few months. I switched from conventional gear oil to synthetic gear oil. After listening to a high-pitched whining noise for about a month, I brought my truck into the dealership where they switched back to conventional gear oil. My rear differential then started making a grinding noise around corners as if it didn't have any limited slip additive. I brought my truck back to the dealership where they had no luck fixing the problem. I put some miles on my truck thinking that the oil just needed to work into the clutches, but I had absolutely no luck. After putting 5,000 miles on my truck with these problems, I finally called this shop. Al listened to the problem and said that the truck could have worn out the bearings among many other problems. Furthermore, I was hearing a loud clanking noise when going over bumps and making hard u-turns. I asked him to look at the front wheel bearings. I thought that the problems would cost over $700-$1,000 to repair based on past experiences and Al's preliminary estimate. Thankfully, Al fixed my truck for less than $100! This is an awesome shop. The mechanics are honest and knowledgeable. The shop is clean, too. All the problems with my truck were resolved. I couldn't recommend this place enough and I know I'll be back. read more

Got my Jeep Wrangler re-geared and a new locker installed there today. I can't say enough good things about Al and his crew. It was the kind of experience that makes you happy you can do an online review of them so other people know about how great the experience was. Al and his crew went above and beyond to make sure I knew enough to make informed choices about all the work done, taking time to make sure everything was not just right, but geared right for how I planned to use it. The work was well done, the price was by far the cheapest around (about 30% below most quotes) and they had me in and out in a little over half a day (for both axles!). They were honestly interested in making sure I was happy and taken care of. Al told me multiple times they stand behind their work, so come back if I had any issues.
