Was a long time customer over the years. They worked on many of my cars. Geez I bought a Groupon for an inspection and only need emissions test. You'd think I was trying to rob them by using this. I don't even care that I only need emissions and bought one for an inspection. I've tried to make the appointment for this three times. Today I made the appointment. They made it for a week out and told me I'd have to drop off the car between 7:30&8:30 am one day next week, leave it for the day and come back to pick it up. For an emissions test? Joe contacted me to make this right. He offered me a generous and kind apology to make this right explaining there were extenuating circumstances with an employee that are being resolved. I don't often give great reviews but I am convinced that Jim and the mechanics did well by me. I have an 2004 Dodge Stratus (yep it's 20 yrs old) and used to have a regular mechanic that I trusted. Well, needless to say my old faithful mechanic wasn't doing the work I was paying him to keep my car running well and safely. Everything was leaking underneath, rattles and pings. I wasn't ready to give up on my car and decided to give Columbia a try because it needed major work. They didn't let me down. My car now has restored power, new belts, hoses, water pumps. The pricing does get a little expensive, but there willing to help you find you comfortable price for you to pay. Very poor communication. I showed up at ~11AM, admittedly no reservation, to get a code check on a check engine light. My previous experience in shops like theseis that these done right away. They were busy, took my info and said they would call. Fair enough. An hour before closing, no call. I walked 40 minutes up, and they said they didn't get to it, and would keep it over night and get to it tomorrow. It would have been outside for the night. Then, "Oh, did you need it sooner?" I took the keys, apologized for "my" poor communication, and left. My communications expectations. When they said that they would call, I assumed it would be before closing. When they said that they needed/wanted to keep a vehicle overnight, I would have heard from them some time that day. I'll get my code check somewhere else. read more

These guys put new tires on my Jeep Wrangler last year (2020). I remember taking it back the same day because they were rubbing hardcore, which it never did before. They were the same size tires and these guys told me since they were new the tread would rub. They basically treated me like I was an idiot. It took a lot of my turning radius away and put my life at risk if the rub were to puncture a tire and flip my jeep. I didn't know any better because I'm not an auto mechanic so I thought I had to live with it and turn carefully. After selling the Jeep this week, the purchaser contacted me to show me how negligent and wrong the tires were put on. The purchaser's mechanic friend fixed it in fifteen minutes. I don't recommend anyone using this shop. I would have given zero stars if I could. I would not feel safe driving a vehicle that has been worked on here off this lot. That's simply not how you run a business, with no care for the safety of others. read more

I met the owner, Chuck, several years ago when I taught computer workshops, and he was one of my attendees. He explained how he makes sure to treat his employees right by paying them fairly, as long as they do good work. My car needed a new clutch after I had it replaced by a friend of a friend. That friend didn't install it properly and I had to re-replace it, so I took it to Columbia Auto Repair. Jim, the lead mechanic, explained exactly what was done wrong and gave me a quote. Yes, it was more than I paid the friend of a friend, but it was done right. Through the years, I've taken my car back to Columbia Auto Repair for my oil changes, inspections and other repairs. They tend to charge a little more than the cheap chains, but I love that I'm supporting a local business who does high quality trustworthy work and pays their employees living wages. Since, I have gone here for many different reasons - oil changes, brakes, and all sorts of mechanical mishaps. There's no bull here, and they call you to give you the break down and options before doing any of the work. Our car didn't start on Wednesday afternoon. I spent some time trying to look into only to realize it's a problem too big for me to do, so I called Columbia and asked if I had it towed would they be able to get to it and look at it quickly? They said sure I'd be able to look at it by tomorrow (this was about an hour before they closed so I didn't expect them to get to it today anyways) Joe on the phone was extremely nice and understanding. The car made it right before they closed and they called me to collect some additional information and told me they'd have an answer about what's wrong sometime the next day. When he called me back the next day, he told me what the problem was and said he's be able to have it fixed by tomorrow or even maybe the end of business that day. I was shocked and amazed. The price was reasonable and they have it fixed by the end of the day. I couldn't believe my car broke down and within 48 hours it was fixed. Definitely my new local auto repair shop. read more

So I had my Jeep towed to Columbia Auto Repair, and they knew right away what the problem was. They corrected the problem and I had them to do other work on the Jeep. I took my car there about a year ago because I had a Groupon for a free state inspection and emissions test. While there I asked them to change the oil and change my headlight. After they finished the work the man behind the register explained to me that they were giving me a "discount" and only charging me $100 in labor TO REPLACE MY HEADLIGHT BULB. They had already done the work so I paid and left. Today I took my same car to the place I normally have work done to have my breaks checked. I mentioned to them that my headlight was out. When I picked up my car the guy told that they had changed my headlight and there was no cost because they had the bulb in stock. So I looked at the one review and I had my doubts, however the fact that it is walking distance from my house so I could drop my car off and enjoy the rest of my day was too enticing to pass up, and I took my car in today for it's oil change and to get a squeaky belt tightened. I am sorry that this person had a bad experience, but my experience was way above par! First, let me explain what a beautiful piece of machinery I have, I currently drive a 1985 Impala, a mintish grey-green monstrosity of a vehicle. It is not only difficult to find mechanics that CAN work on my car, but mechanics that are WILLING to work on my car! Some love to work on her, but it can be time consuming and difficult to diagnose. I have been going to a friend who has worked on her since 2005 but he took a job in a great shop out in St. Charles, but spending a day in St. Chuck isn't how I like to spend an afternoon (plus it's just hard to set aside a day to do it) so I wanted to find a new mechanic that was preferably close by. Columbia Auto Repair is my new mechanic! Not only did Jim listen to my long-winded description of my lady's "issues" he had some ideas on what was wrong. He got me an early appointment the next day. When I dropped off my Impala he and the other owner were there to meet my dog Auggie and I, and welcome us to the shop. When they called me to talk about what I needed fixed, they had prices for me and let me decide what I needed and what could wait. They were honest about the state of my car and described in great detail what the next step would be and how much it would cost. When I showed up to pay and pick-up they were ultra-friendly and I enjoyed the banter between the mechanics and some of the other long-time customers. Not only is my baby running smooth and sounding great, I think I found a group of mechanics that remind me of what going to a mechanic was like with my parents: the witty banter, the community vibe, the ability to describe in detail what is wrong and to offer solutions, and to not pressure you into things you can't afford and can be put off to another oil change. (Here is a word of advice to these groupon users: Don't Get Mechanic Groupons. Your automobile is an extension of your family and once you find the doctor that can help your baby stay in good health- you don't just jump to another doctor who hands out coupons- if you have a mechanic, stick with them, they learn your car and can see problems in advance. I highly recommend this auto repair! Great service, great guys, all around great experience! If you are car clueless these guys are genuine. After many estimates from different companies around town regarding my AC I finally came here to see what they could do. They showed me I didn't even need an estimate and that I was being completely screwed over. They had the machines needed to fix the problem with out me having to spend tons of money to replace my AC. They walked me through the process and showed me exactly what was going on and how my car in fact was fine to begin with but that I had worked with a bad company who didn't fill my chemical levels high enough to get the AC to work. They saved me a fortune and for that I am grateful. I've come here before for yearly check ups and admissions and the process is always smooth and easy. They even advice me on what questions I should ask when I need to get my next oil change so I know exactly whats up with my car. I truly feel well taken care of by these guys! I came here twice based on a word-of-mouth recommendation from a stranger. Mistake! The first time, I actually had a fine experience. I needed a new tire and was looking for a low price, and they delivered with decent customer experience. The second time, I needed a Missouri Safety Inspection (with a LivingSocial coupon) and another new tire. They told me I needed a rear turn signal replaced and new brakes/rotors. They took the time to show me an example brake/rotor, though I later realized I should have asked to see the actual brakes/rotors they took off my car. There were two problems when I got my car back. First, my new turn signal light didn't work. Second, the dash of my car was covered in white dust! First the guy at the desk argued with me about which side bulb was replaced, which is ridiculous. I had to show them their own print out to get them to fix it. Second, he denied the mechanics creating the white dust at all, then suggesting it was somehow dust that came in during the window while they were doing work. It was clearly from the old sticker that they had chipped off but never bothered to clean up. All I wanted was an apology, and instead I got argument! I don't trust these guys, steer clear. read more

I am car clueless, so when mine didn't start and a jump didn't work, i immediately decided to find a repair shop in the city. I asked a few friends, but no super recommendations came up, so to Yelp i went! I honestly chose Columbia because they open at 7:30 (before work) and the reviews were good. I called and Jim was cheerful despite the early hour. he even gave me the number for a tow company that they use. it was an easy and flawless process. I will admit that the price of a battery, a couple small parts and diagnostic test was higher than expected, but alas, car repair doesn't seem cheap-- ever. I do not question that the prices were fair. these guys seem honest and I highly doubt they would scam me or anyone. The whole thing was done by 2:00 that afternoon and I was back on the road. They even made sure I had all the receipts i needed from the tow company so i could file my roadside assistance claim with state farm! I will suggest Columbia to my friends. my repair was easy as far as repairs go, but i'll probably go back if anything else were to go wrong. job well done! read more

I stumbled upon a Groupon for Columbia Auto Repair a while back and decided I'd give it a shot. They keep busy and prefer reservations. However, the last couple visits I called "just in case" and they managed to squeeze me in. I got in and out of there fast, affordably and with the friendly customer service from Jim. He even took time to answer my question about how to weatherize my car since I'm not familiar with winter climate. Pretty good place, the only reason why they are getting a four is because they took a long time the first time they did my inspection BUT my car didn't pass and Jim let me come back in and get it reinspected for free! I really appreciated that because I used a living social deal and typically people are really weird about customers and living social deals. Jim is pretty short with ppl but he's cordial and I figured he has to have a poker face working at a place like this.
