This place is so great that I was compelled to bite the bullet and write my first ever Yelp review. After my long time mechanic retired last year, I found Master Auto Repair on Fyler. I've taken my car here several times and each time was a lovely experience and they did great work. They are reasonably priced, so friendly, and trustworthy. I never feel like I'm being upsold or taken advantage of. In fact earlier today, after struggling to find a functional gas station air pump to fill my tires, I came here out of desperation to see if they'd help me out. They insisted on doing it for free and I was in and out in 10 minutes! In a world where it seems harder and harder to find this sort of neighborly kindness, it really made my day. I called last week to make an appt for an emissions test the following morning, he told me to come in when they opened at 8 and he could have my car done by midday. So I showed up, John took my info and told me he could have it ready by 9:45. I live one block over so I walked home then came back an hour later and he had it ready to go I was in and out they were friendly and helpful and professional and I would most definitely come back if I need any services again for my car. read more

It was time for the new license sticker and this year I was reactive instead of proactive. Bad me. Realizing I have waited to the end of the month, I started to panic. I did not want to be in those long lines at the license office on my days off next week, so I quickly went into action. I live less then two blocks from FAR, and I had seen their signs advertising they do state inspections. So I hopped in my CRV and drove up the street to see if they could get me done today (Wednesday). I was greeted by very professional gentleman who assured me they could. It got even better when he looked the card sent to me by the state and all I needed was the emissions test. They could do it pronto, it would be less then 15 minuets. That was GREAT news, but then I realized I left my wallet at home. They laughed with me, at least I hope it was with me and not at me and told me to just come back later and it'd be ready. Walked home, got the wallet and decided to have lunch with Brad before picking it up. When we arrived, sure enough it was ready to go. As another young man checked me out, he recommended Deer Creek for picking up my actual stickers instead of S. Kingshighway location. He told me they were much more efficient and quicker. He was right, watch for that review. Great friendly, and prompt service. I am proud to have them in my neighborhood. read more

I went in to this shop because had just moved to the area, I needed an inspection, and I lived nearby so I knew of the place from driving by it. When I arrived in the early afternoon, they said they couldnt take me right away, but that I could make an appointment for later that day. I asked if I could leave the car and just come back when it was done, but they insisted I leave and bring the car back later. OK, weird. When I came back, they said it would take about 40 minutes to inspect. It took over an hour. They did the emissions inspection and I dont have a problem with that. As for the safety inspection, they said the car had 3 things that needed to be fixed. One was semi legit. I noticed a problem that this could cause as I drove the car, but this had been a problem on the car for a long time, and my previous state passed it, so why not here? The other he tried to show me there was a part that was loose or something. He tried to show me by showing how when he pressed on it, it moved. Yeah. So did the entire car, so I dont believe them on that. Of course, they offered to fix both problems for me. They wanted a little under $1000 to fix both. I took their estimate and never went back. They charged $86/hour for labor, which seems high to me. They also scraped off my old inspection sticker from my old state (which clearly was expired) and does not apply in MO. Why? I dont have a problem with that, but in removing this sticker, they pressed another sticker firmly against the glass so that I can no longer get it out myself, and I do have a problem with that. All in all, I think they took one look at my out of state plates and decided to try and rip me off. A week later I took the car to a shop down the street, and although they failed it for the semi-legit problem these guys pointed out, they said that was all, and they charge 1/3 less to bring the car up to code. In addition, Fyler Auto Repair charged $36 for the inspection, as opposed to under $20 for the other place. Bottom line, I wouldnt go back here. read more

I had heard good things about this place and decided to try it. I brought my car in for one immediate issue. They identified several other issues that I knew about but had put off fixing because I didn't think I could afford it. Not only did they fix the main issue but three other issues all within my budget. There's one other issue remaining I expect to take back to them when financially able. They were very friendly and not condescending even though my partner and I are women (I have experienced that with other mechanics). They also have a complimentary loaner car available as long as another customer isn't using it, meaning you may not have to take the day off work afterall. I need to get inspections done to renew my plates and they ensured I had everything done in order to pass. Very satisfied customer. read more

If you want more info, read below: I'm not originally from St. Louis so anytime my car has needed service I took it to the overpriced and overselling dealership. Recently, my car started overheating andi had it towed to the dealer who said it needed about $7,000 with of repairs including a new radiator. Well, I didn't want to spend $7,000 so I hired an online car repair company who came to my house to fix the radiator. Terrible idea because they made it worse. At this point I was in it and needed some help and guidance. This is where John at Master Auto Repair came in and saved the day. Not only did he look my car over and give me honest and real advice, he was kind, explained everything so I understood, and has made sure to keep in touch with me to insure everything is continuing to work wonderfully. I wasn't thrilled my car needed $3,300 worth or work but, I honestly feel that my car runs, works, and is better now that it's been fully fixed. But, even better than that is knowing that I've got someone in the Auto Repair Industry that I can trust and that's huge. read more

Was in and out in an hour for a headlight change and a tire rebalance to fix a vibration problem (including testing the car on the highway pre- and post-balancing); fixed the problem completely, and the price was very reasonable. Plus John (the owner) goes above and beyond to be helpful. While I was waiting in the shop (with complimentary high-speed wifi and soft drinks), a customer showed up without an appointment whom John couldn't squeeze in till the next day; and yet John still made time to briefly check out the car and make sure it was safe to drive before letting the customer go. read more

I just had my front strut and two back tires replaced here. The guy in charge(forgive me, I forgot his name) is very honest. I had done my research because I was going to attempt the repair myself but my dad and girlfriend's dad talked me out of it. All the prices quoted were very reasonable. It wasn't much more expensive than doing it myself would have been, and certainly a lot less hassle. Plus, they've done this before and I would have been kicking my car or crying by the time I got the job done myself. On the first call back, he told me it would be around $900 (2 front struts replaced, 2 back tires replaced, alignment). It made sense, because it's an older car and neither one of the struts have probably ever been replaced, so you might as well do both. It was more than I was looking to spend, but I knew he was right and his prices were not over-inflated at all. Second call back he dropped the price to 500-600 (1 front strut replaced, no alignment, 2 back tires replaced). After he had a look at the car he realized it was old enough that it just didn't make sense to throw that much money at it, which is exactly what I wanted all along. I am glad that his initial estimate was based on doing what is sensible to do to maintain your car correctly, but then changed his view when he got a good look at it and saw that it's on it's way out anyway. I really like that he was being thorough without ripping me off and realized that putting that much money into it didn't make sense for me. Now I'm just worried that the rest of the car is going to disintegrate around the repairs they made. Pretty soon I'll be driving a front left strut and two good back tires connected to a pile of rust. Straight-forward and honest. I had a very good experience and would recommend. I might come back and give a fifth star later, but I'm not ready for that level of commitment right now. They have a loaner, but it seems pretty sought after and may be hard to get unless you reserve it. Also, it's important to note that his price quotes were not only reasonable, but very accurate: What he told me it was going to cost, was what it cost when I showed up to pay. read more

A good auto mechanic shop, especially for those of us who aren't auto-repair savvy, is worth its weight in gold--and at least five stars on Yelp. This little corner shop is wonderful. We gave them a try based on both proximity and recommendations, and have been consistently thrilled with the service we've received. I took my husband's vehicle in once when it was making a strange noise occasionally. Of course it didn't make the noise once the car was in the shop, but every mechanic drove it, it was gone over from end to end, and they even had me come in and drive it with them. "We don't want to miss something, but we don't hear anything!" Sure enough, the sound was gone. Other shops we used to trust our cars to would've "fixed" something and charged us an arm and a leg anyway. Not these guys, and they've earned our trust. They're friendly, knowledgeable, and trustworthy. I wish they were open on weekends, but you know, they're such a great shop I can't even count that against them! They're a good outfit...Crestwood location. I had an issue with my F150 that I thought was major and it wasn't as bad as I thought. They're moderately priced and charge about the same as any mechanic...they're not cheap but they're not overpriced. The main thing is that they fixed an issue that I was dealing with for two years within a day and it wasn't crazy expensive. Angie in the front office is nice which may seem no big deal but it's nice talking with someone these days who doesn't have an attitude and actually knows a little about cars. read more

This place is great, the owner is extremely honest and upfront and would not charge you for more than what you need. Every time I come in for an oil change or a tire rotation they get it done fast and have always kept me in the loop if there's something I should be monitoring or consider having done to my car in the near future. I appreciate this place because their overall attitude is to just do whatever is necessary, and they don't feed you information about your car that would make you panic or think you need to get all this unnecessary work done. The most amazing, honest auto repair shop in all of STL! I heard about them through a friend after getting a $1300 quote elsewhere for allegedly needing new tires, shocks, etc PLUS needing to schedule another appt to run a diagnostics test for 4 failure codes that I couldn't pass my emissions test for. I took my car to Master Auto for a second opinion and they took care of every failure code, the two tires, etc all for as much money as just the tire quote from other place. I have lived near Fyler Auto Body for many years, and I only recently (in the past couple of years) have started to use them. They are friendly, they have never tried to lie to me about my car because I am a woman. I also repair cars in my spare time, so if they ever tried to swindle me, I could spot it a mile away. I am going up there today to get my inspection and everything else. The last time I was there they were nice, friendly, fair, and I was happy with my inspection. The only complaint I had was the car wasn't ready on time. But as a mechanic myself I know sometimes while fixing cars, you find other problems that need to be fixed before you can fix the original problem, and it takes time. I would try quick fixes and then bring my car back up there to see if the scan could be done. This happened 4-5 times until I finally had the car running right. They took the time to run a 5 minute scan each time for free and never tried to push any sales gimmicks on me. Great place to have your vehicle inspected. read more

I spoke with John about a leak in my transmission fluid that another mechanic brought to my attention. He found all the exact same problems as did the first mechanic. But, John's bid came in at some $270 less than the first mechanic. A much more do-able amount than the original $800 I was quoted. John remedied the problem, then test-drove the car before declaring it repaired. The "cherry on top" was the loaner car John allowed me to drive for the afternoon. It was the least I could do to fill the gas tank to try to thank him for his professionalism and consideration. I just love how transparent this auto repair place is and how quick they are! I don't know anything about cars but the owner was really friendly and explained what they found and what they needed to replace. They gave me a printed out copy with all the information on what they replaced and the warranties that came with the parts. Recently had extensive work done on my car, and I could not be happier with my experience at Master. John lowered his quote after I came back with a quote from another shop, and, when the work took longer than expected, he didn't charge me for the additional labor hours. Even after all of that, I'm pretty sure they filled my car with gas after test driving it, AND they fixed some clipped wires from where my radio had been ripped out of the dash without an extra charge.
