C35. General Tao's Chicken Dinner
LaShawn S.

This place was recommended by locals. I was skeptical and for a good reason. I have not had good Chinese food since I've lived here. I've had decent but not good. The wonton soup had cabbage in it I don't believe that I've tasted that much cabbage in a soup. The chicken was the same as most other Chinese food in Colorado Springs, it doesn't blend together. I could taste each part of the dish separately. Even the service was sub-par. We sat there for a while once we were done and no one came over until we went up to get to go boxes. I don't recommend this place.

The food came out immediately. Note there is an old discount here on Yelp when you check in, but it is no longer valid. I got some spicy chicken, but needed it hotter. I got a few pics of chicken I didn't like the texture of, but when I had it the next day as cold Chinese, it was awesome. I'd have liked more rice also. Service was good.

Sweet and sour chicken, wontons, wonton soup, tea (delicious!)

Their Yelp Profile hasn't been updated in over 4 years! Hours are incorrect! And the "check in" free wonton soup is no longer honored! Despite this, THE FOOD IS AMAZING! Definitely eat here! The portions are great for what you pay- I always have to take a box home! The service is literally the fastest, most accommodating I've ever experienced. All their soups are so good. I got sweet and sour chicken, it was just heavenly! Fried rice with shrimp is also a safe bet. This place is a perfect example of not judging a restaurant by its appearance. The sketchy "Chinese restaurant" sign might be a turn off for the faint hearted,... GO INSIDE ANYWAY. You won't be disappointed. A solid stop for great Chinese food.

Great find. Driving home from Co Springs. Disregard the negative reviews on this place. 99% of the reviews were spot on.

Although service was efficient I wouldn't expect much warmth but honestly doesn't really matter to me as long as the food is good and everything is done in a timely matter! They have really good shrimp here. Jumbo, slight slight crisp to the outside but tender. Their dumplings had a very clean flavor, spring rolls were fresh. Last time their cheese wontons were dry but this time they had the right ratio of filling and they were freshly fried. I want to come back and try the buffet!

If you like mediocre Chinese food, this is your place. Not horrible but not great either.

Great value (huge portion) and the food was good. Lunch menu was good sized and very reasonably priced.

**Ambiance** The…read morerestaurant itself is a decent size with plenty of seating and large booths, so it would be comfortable for families or larger groups. **Service** Service was great. Everyone we interacted with was friendly and welcoming. The staff spoke English as well as either Cantonese or Mandarin, which initially gave me high hopes for the food. **Food** I won't lie--I came in with pretty moderate expectations. After chatting with the staff in both Mandarin and Cantonese, I thought we were in for a really authentic meal. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. We ordered five dishes, and it quickly became apparent that the food is heavily catered toward American tastes. Several dishes contained ingredients that traditionally wouldn't be included, while other key ingredients were missing altogether. The biggest issue for me was the sweetness. Three of the five dishes were noticeably sweet, which isn't what I expected from the dishes we ordered. The standout dish of the meal was the Mongolian Beef. It was flavorful and wasn't overly sweet. That said, it lacked the spice I typically associate with the dish. The Mapo Tofu was probably the biggest surprise. It was missing the ground pork that usually gives the dish so much flavor and texture. Instead, it included bell peppers, onions, and water chestnuts--ingredients I've personally never seen in Mapo Tofu. Rather than being spicy and numbing, the dominant flavor was sweetness. The Chicken Pan-Fried Noodles were difficult to enjoy. The sauce was very sweet, and the noodles were cooked to the point where they were tough and chewy. Instead of the thinner noodles commonly used for this dish, they used thick noodles that reminded me more of lo mein. We also ordered a Beef and Scallion dish. It felt more like a beef chop suey variation with scallions added. The scallions themselves were cooked perfectly, but once again the sauce leaned much sweeter than expected. The Hot and Sour Soup was actually the first item to arrive. I jokingly told my family that if the soup wasn't good, I might be worried about the rest of the meal because hot and sour soup is one of those dishes that really showcases balance and technique. Unfortunately, it ended up confirming my concerns. It lacked the bold sour and spicy flavors that make the dish so enjoyable. By the end of the meal, we had a lot of leftovers. The only items we brought home were the Mongolian Beef and a few pieces of beef picked out from the Beef and Scallion dish. **Overall** This restaurant may appeal to diners who enjoy sweeter, Americanized Chinese food, but it wasn't for me. Based on this visit, I wouldn't return, and I wouldn't personally recommend it to anyone looking for the flavors and dishes I grew up eating.

They came with soup and choice of egg roll or wonton. The wonton soup was delicious with two wrll stuffed tender wontons and flavorful broth. Egg rolls were nicely fried. The beef fried rice did need additional soy sauce and some salt but was great after that. Lots of big pieces of meat and veggies. They added bean sprouts for us too! The chicken was perfect just as it is! During pickup the restaurant and bathrooms were clean and inviting. The staff was friendly and courteous. Overall great experience!

We ordered the appetizer platter and it had 2 of each of an array of apps, fried wontons, truly homemade eggrolls, crab Rangoon and chicken kebabs and beef on a stick. With an array of sauces too. We also got wonderfully tasting jasmine tea and she brought two cups for us to both have the teapot. For entrees we shared the phenomenal orange chicken. It came with orange peel cooked into it and a side of peeled fresh orange which was so delicious to cut off and add to a bite. The chicken was such nice quality white meat and very fresh and super crispy. The orange sauce was perfectly sweet and savory and lightly orange-y. I'd definitely get it again. We also had kung pao beef and the beef quality was also very fresh, and tender but perfectly cooked and it was not like 90% of Chinese places that soft but chewy beef so common to find. Because of that I must must must go back and try the orange beef. The sauce flavor was deep, rich and a little spicy, just as hoped. As I was eating I told my partner, I think this is the best American style Chinese food I've ever had in Colorado and that's true. Rivals anything in NY or San Fran. Everything was perfect and every detail was pleasant. 10/10 highly recommended and will be back to bring friends. It's a gorgeous drive to a wonderful little restaurant.
