Colwood has seen many changes over the 20 or so years I've golfed here. I went back this week after a long hiatus from golf. For years the owner of this course refused to put any money in this course. However, in the years since his son has taken over they have given the pro shop a face lift and improved the dining area. Some of the professionals I took lessons from are still here and still run a tight ship. On this day the weather was 90 degrees so even though we normally walk the course, my friend and I opted for a cart and nine holes rather than 18. This course has always been good for the beginner as the fairways are wide open and the 150 yard markers are some of the trees (these are some of the tips they teach you in the lessons). Over the years they have moved a couple of holes around to accommodate the business that have moved in nearby. (Read, the local hotel was tired of losing windows). Great for tournaments. My friend and I ran a tournament there for over ten years and the tournament continues to date with other organizers. They were easy to work with and the costs were always kept to a minimum. I tried one year to move it just for a change of pace, but I kept coming back because the price and course was just right. So, it is with a bit of melancholy that I write this review as Colwood is closing on May 31, 2014. They have sold half of the acreage to a place that will go industrial (think back nine) and turn what is remaining into a par 3 executive course with 18 holes. We met up with a group of guys (middled aged) who said they played all their high school tournaments there and they were here to bid the course farewell with a final round of 18. I will watch the progress, that I always knew someday would come and perhaps come back to the par 3 course. But it will never be the same as the days of Dave Miller as the head pro and the women's playing lessons sponsored by the Oregonian newspaper (I know what's that, right? It looks like the National Enquirer, now). Check it out before it's gone. $17 for nine holes on a week day, not too bad.

This is a Yelp specific to Lake Colwood, which is located very near Colwood Golf Course. This "lake" or what some Portlandia's refer to as an "over-sized pond" is a scenic piece of water situated in a somewhat industrialized area near Portland Airport It seems like a pearl placed among the swine since it is so pretty there and all around the immediate area is a bunch of industrial-like buildings. When I was staying at the Radisson hotel, which is built right on Lake Colwood, I was told by one employee that the water in the lake was not clean. There is drainage from the nearby streets flowing into Lake Colwood.. This person also claimed that if you catch any fish there, the fish will have deformities on them. Although at the Radisson, they claim that in the afternoons, from their upper floor windows, you can see the huge Koi fish that have survived not being eaten by the herons that troll for them, swimming around. I walked around the circumference of the Lake and noted the many mated mallard duck pairs that are very territorial. A few Canadian Geese came by. There were the usual crows chasing off some curious hawks flying too close to their nests. Along the shore, great bunches of cowslip attracted bees and butterflies. I noticed some squirrels hiding in the trees. These are not like the squirrels in San Diego that run up to you begging for food--these were real WILD SQUIRRELS...who wee very skittish but cute. I marveled at the bunches of wild berries that were just beginning to flower and promised lots of delicious nibbling for later in the summer. Because it had rained recently, walking along the grassy area was a little slippery. 4 YELP STARS for this pretty lake. 1 YELP STAR deducted for some pollution issues that need to be cleaned up in the Lake. In my neck of the woods, we have to travel up to the local mountains to get anywhere near a lake. Here in Portland, they are lucky to have such a scenic and lovely one right in their city midst.

Was gonna order food but it smells bad in here and there is a dead fly near the water and i cant handle that.

After trying out multiple instructors in the Portland area (Redtail, Pumpkin Ridge, Rock Creek) and several others in the US (at least 50 hours of total instruction), Golftec stands out to me as one of the best setups for a golfer looking to improve. Michael's approach on the game is multifaceted, not just how best to swing a club. We go through swing mechanics on an indoor simulator and apply them during playing lessons on-course. Short-game and putting lessons have been the weakest part of my game, but now are a more confident part of my game. Instruction on strategy and course management has dramatically increased my percentage of hitting greens on approach shots. Michael's engineering background, his deep knowledge of the game, and his passion for instruction helped me better understand my golf game. I now am better equipped to self diagnose and fix day-to-day adjustments in my swing. The facility also allows for indoor practice on a simulator which is key for off-season improvement to ready for the new season. The video recording/playback in the practice sessions allows you to see whether or not the swing mechanics taught during lessons are being implemented during practice. This feature has increased the efficacy of my practice sessions in a way I couldn't have imagined previously. I can write another page worth of praise for Michael and Golftec, but it's just easier for you to try it yourself. Go in for a swing evaluation; it's $95 and it's likely you'll walk away from that session with actual solutions that work rather than YouTubing/Instagraming a fix that will cause more problems than it fixes.

With rainy…read moreand cold days, I felt like I needed to find an indoor golf simulator to not lose my gains over the next 3 months. So, golftec was the first place I decided to give a try. Ironically none of their prices are posted on their website and its not posted for a reason. I showed up for a "evaluation" with the "best" instructor at golftec, Chris. Chris is more expensive and it baffled me why the evaluation cost more with Chris? Does the other instructors provide a lesser evaluation? Anywho he is $25 more just to come up with a plan. Roughly 30 mins of video recording and going over your swing. NOW here is the catch. Their goal is to make you invest in one of their packages. Two types, one with practice and one with just lessons. 15 session (30 mins lesson) packages for $1200 or 10 classes/3 months of video practice (90 mins a week) and 1 fitting session for $1200. Seems a bit much. My instructor back in SD who is a golf range top 50 elite master, SoCal PGA player development award, etc. Isn't nearly as expensive as golftec. Also you are swinging on a simulator. The package approach is to get you to sign up a chunk of your money without really having a feel for your instructor or learning on a simulator. Once you sign up, you are stuck. Also the $125 evaluation fee (in my case $150) is a way for you to commit to signing up with a plan. They try and nicely convince you to sign up for a plan while you are there. I took the time to do some more research and talk to my coach back home and was told golftec is too commercial and not worth the money (my coach says it's the worst). So, I decided to consider the evaluation fee a learning experience and not sign up and find another coach for lessons.

We spoke loud enough for them to her us, we asked to hit a few balls, we asked questions about what was available - we gave them so many opportunities to ignite and build a sale but instead, we walked in and found the front counter employee on their phone, then they were fixed on some game on tv.
