Colwood is all about convenience. The location is great, parking is easy and the course is fast to navigate. It's a wonderful option when I'm limited on time but want a step above the driving range or the pitch and putt area at a course. The course itself is very basic. There are no sand traps and no water features. I didn't see a drink cart while I was out, but maybe that's only available during certain days or certain hours... you can grab a fresh drink in the clubhouse before or after you play, though. The bathrooms are slightly cleaner than the average public course. It's easy to make a reservation online and the prices are very fair for the market and overall experience. The only drawbacks for me are the background noise from the adjacent streets and the lack of overall aesthetics in terms of visual presentation. If you're looking for a laid back gold experience that won't break the bank or take too much of your day, this is your place. I really hate giving negative reviews. I thoroughly enjoy this driving range. The problem I have is the inconsistent hours they keep. You can come in on a Friday, and be told last large bucket sold at 815, and be done by 9pm. The very next day it is closed at 8 with no buckets sold. It is all over the place, and the time can swing by as much as an hour. I have started calling ahead to ask what time they sell their last large bucket. Even that isn't reliable, as I will come in and be told they are closing, and I have to tell the staff I had just called, and that was what I was told. When this occurs, the staff will often make you feel like the bad guy. I assume the people who come out to the range, come for certain reasons beyond just working on their game. Maybe it's therapeutic, or mental health reasons. I submit this review as this issue continues to exist. Keep to your Google hours, or post your time of selling certain sizes of buckets. read more

We booked a morning tee time here on a Sunday. We had kind of preplanned everything and checked out online pricing before heading out. We show up a little late due to missing an exit (by about 7 minutes) but the younger man up front doesn't give us any issues when checking in. We paid and realized it came out to a bit more than expected so I go back in and ask for a some clarification since I didn't get a receipt. The new person up front looks super annoyed that I asked. Turns out the rental clubs got charged at the 18 hole rate so I told him we only planned on 9 holes. He asks me where the cheaper price is and I show him their online website which clearly states $9 and before he even looks he said it was wrong and the prices never got updated. Annoying enough the prices said 2025 rates. Now I know sometimes mistakes happen so I don't really mind the difference in price BUT what I did mind was the attitude. He was sighing, rolling his eyes and his overall general tone was just rude. I never got a sorry or anything for the misunderstanding. As of Monday when I checked, they updated their pricing to reflect what I was charged. Anyway, now we head out to the first hole. It is probably about 10:35. We line up behind the first hole and there are two groups from earlier times still playing ahead of us so realistically none of this set anyone back, right? The two groups finish up and it's probably 10:45 by the time we're up to hit. Well, guess what! Some older guy asked us when our tee time was. We said 10:20 and he's mad. He tells us we're almost half an hour late even though we were waiting behind two groups who JUST finished. Says he doesn't even know if we can play because now we'll set EVERYONE back. Mind you the next group was not even behind us yet. He makes us wait while he scurries around to ask other staff he we can go I presume. After about 4-5 minutes he waves us off to start. We are relatively fast players. We had no issue getting to the second hole before the next group was ready to play. It really just ruined our whole experience. We didn't feel welcomed at all. My sister look so frustrated she could cry. We only ran into ONE nice staff member and he looked like an instructor. Spoke to us very nice and made sure we had all the clubs we paid for. Other players on the course were also nice luckily. This is all really unfortunate because the course was a fun and pretty well kept. I did also leave a similar review on their survey and was contacted by Joe. He was nice through email and offered to cover our next trip but I really do not think we will be back. read more

We tried soccer golf...the course for soccer golf was not green so the balls rolled...and it was bumpy so the ball would hit something and change direction.. we all had fun, but next time we will maybe try a different course. read more

Clubhouse was very friendly. Range balls were price very reasonably in the practice. Facility was surprisingly very nice and well kept. Walking up to the practice screens, I thought they would be spongy and be really hard to putt through. But my first chip ran out nice and far beyond the flag. I was aiming at so you definitely get a good role on the practice screens great place to stop if you have kids I will be back for sure. read more

Affordable and an atmosphere that feels welcoming to all sorts of folks and experience levels: The course can get backed up with slow groups often so it's probably not the place to go if you're in a rush to get a round in or you don't have patience for beginners. Colwood has seen many changes over the 20 or so years I've golfed here. I went back this week after a long hiatus from golf. For years the owner of this course refused to put any money in this course. However, in the years since his son has taken over they have given the pro shop a face lift and improved the dining area. Some of the professionals I took lessons from are still here and still run a tight ship. On this day the weather was 90 degrees so even though we normally walk the course, my friend and I opted for a cart and nine holes rather than 18. This course has always been good for the beginner as the fairways are wide open and the 150 yard markers are some of the trees (these are some of the tips they teach you in the lessons). Over the years they have moved a couple of holes around to accommodate the business that have moved in nearby. (Read, the local hotel was tired of losing windows). Great for tournaments. My friend and I ran a tournament there for over ten years and the tournament continues to date with other organizers. They were easy to work with and the costs were always kept to a minimum. I tried one year to move it just for a change of pace, but I kept coming back because the price and course was just right. So, it is with a bit of melancholy that I write this review as Colwood is closing on May 31, 2014. They have sold half of the acreage to a place that will go industrial (think back nine) and turn what is remaining into a par 3 executive course with 18 holes. We met up with a group of guys (middled aged) who said they played all their high school tournaments there and they were here to bid the course farewell with a final round of 18. I will watch the progress, that I always knew someday would come and perhaps come back to the par 3 course. But it will never be the same as the days of Dave Miller as the head pro and the women's playing lessons sponsored by the Oregonian newspaper (I know what's that, right? It looks like the National Enquirer, now). Check it out before it's gone. $17 for nine holes on a week day, not too bad. read more

I always have a great experience when I come here. I've only played 9 here once but have hit the range quite a few times. The course is a super fun par 3 course that is well maintained. There are only 9 holes so to play 18, you just go through twice. My boyfriend and I decided to play last minute when arriving and played with another guy but had a great time. They have beer, claws and wine for sale that you can take with your or enjoy at the range. They have about 20 bays some of which are covered and others are out in the open. I've had to wait a few minutes a couple of times during the summer but it's always moving. The staff is always friendly and helpful. You can also play foot golf here which I've been super eager to try. I had no idea it was even a thing before I saw it here. This is probably my favorite driving range in Portland. read more

It was a fun golf course and I appreciated how they have the rubber tee to use (with varying heights) so I don't waste all my wooden ones with bad swings lol. The targets are fun to aim at. This review is for Jake Bader the pro at Colwood. I have been playing golf for over 15 years and have taken a lesson here or there over the years. But Jake's weekly group lessons have been the needle mover I didn't know I was looking for. After about 5 lessons I dropped more than a stroke a hole on average for a round of 9! I'm having way more fun playing golf because I don't have the frustration like I used to. You get one on one instruction and he asks what you want to work on. He videos what you are doing and shows you compared to a female pro and writes on the screen to show line, stance differences etc. The use of technology is really helpful. And he always starts with, "Let me start with what you're doing well" so it stays fun like golf should be. The group classes are flexible in that you don't have to go every week. This is a Yelp specific to Lake Colwood, which is located very near Colwood Golf Course. This "lake" or what some Portlandia's refer to as an "over-sized pond" is a scenic piece of water situated in a somewhat industrialized area near Portland Airport It seems like a pearl placed among the swine since it is so pretty there and all around the immediate area is a bunch of industrial-like buildings. When I was staying at the Radisson hotel, which is built right on Lake Colwood, I was told by one employee that the water in the lake was not clean.There is drainage from the nearby streets flowing into Lake Colwood.. This person also claimed that if you catch any fish there, the fish will have deformities on them. Although at the Radisson, they claim that in the afternoons, from their upper floor windows, you can see the huge Koi fish that have survived not being eaten by the herons that troll for them, swimming around. I walked around the circumference of the Lake and noted the many mated mallard duck pairs that are very territorial. A few Canadian Geese came by. There were the usual crows chasing off some curious hawks flying too close to their nests. Along the shore, great bunches of cowslip attracted bees and butterflies. I noticed some squirrels hiding in the trees. These are not like the squirrels in San Diego that run up to you begging for food--these were real WILD SQUIRRELS...who wee very skittish but cute. I marveled at the bunches of wild berries that were just beginning to flower and promised lots of delicious nibbling for later in the summer. Because it had rained recently, walking along the grassy area was a little slippery. 4 YELP STARS for this pretty lake. 1 YELP STAR deducted for some pollution issues that need to be cleaned up in the Lake. In my neck of the woods, we have to travel up to the local mountains to get anywhere near a lake. Here in Portland, they are lucky to have such a scenic and lovely one right in their city midst. read more

I went here for a paint night. Had planned on having some food and drinks. I went to order and was just treated really rude . I ordered a club sandwhich and fries. It looked good but was far from it. Everything tasted old or like it had been sitting out a while. It took 30 minutes to get it as well. the fries where kind of like old jack in the box curly fries. The guy that took my order bothered me the most though. He was so unfriendly and would just dead face you. I asked him to repeat whatbhe said and he just looked at me expectantly and didn't repeat himself. It was super awkward. There were also dead flies all over and it smelled really strongly of dust and dirt. Carpets and walls were real dirty as well. Id never go here again, even for a paint nite. read more

Course was tight and golf range balls everywhere. Range ball came within 10 ft from my boyfriend on the 5th hole. Seemed expensive as bad as the tee boxes are, bare dirt, cig butts and broken tees everywhere. Won't golf here again. read more

The course is in poor shape. We thought we would practice our short game but it was not enjoyable. The driving range is nice except they have a loud speaker playing music. Fair and reasonable city course. I like it because it's down to earth. Not overly challenging. They have Camp Colwood-drink station which intersects several times throughout your round. One of their best features is their food and their breakfast. They did have a deal this summer-first domestic draft beer will cost whatever you shot for 18 holes! Killer Idea. Nice course layout with a nice putting green. Excellent for beginners. The tee boxes could use some love though a few of them were a little rough looking. The greens here are challenging! Good for practicing your putting. You can use your 3 wood on a few holes as well. The people working in the clubhouse were nice and accommodating. They are remodeling so things are a little wonky after the last hole getting back to the clubhouse, but it will be really nice once that's complete. I'll be back to the spot. read more

I've played Colwood for years now, going back to when it was still an 18-hole course. As a 9-hole Par 3 course now it's great for keeping my short game in shape, Given that every hole has two tees (White & Blue) and every green has two flags (also White & Blue) you can play it from whichever tee you choose (many holes have different angles to the green) to whichever flag you want. The undulating greens can make for some seriously interesting putts. The staff is friendly and accommodating, the fees are low, and the food has been consistently good, so why "only" 4 stars? The course doesn't drain as well as a few others I play, and this IS Portland, after all. Then there's the occasionally evil greens crew that seems to enjoy putting a few pins in ridiculously nasty places (4 paces past the nasty fronting bunker on a green that has a serious slope from front to back? Do I look like Nicklaus?) Colwood is a wonderful venue and value ... it just ain't perfect yet! read more

The golf course was in horrible condition. The tee boxes were basically just rough, and the ponds look like they were just low ground filled with water. Even though it was cheap, it was not worth my money. In addition, the brat working the club house was rude and pretentious. Absolutely the the worst vodka/soda I've ever had. So I ordered a margarita that was the Tuesday special and it was even more disturbing. Then then cheeseburger was like eating an old shoe. No fries, had to order tots and they were cold. The bartender was cute and pleasant but she was never trained on the simplest bar drinks. I hate writing bad reviews, sorry cute bartender. It's a splash of sweet and sour not a lot of 7up. Put a straw in the drink to taste before serving. If you wouldn't drink, don't serve it. read more

Not the best of courses but a pretty forgiving Par 3 if you're looking for a place to practice your short game or if you're new to the sport. If you are new to the sport there are a couple things worth noting. I'm not sure if they still do this or not but they have marketed themselves as an 18 hole course, it's not really 18 holes. You essentially play the same 9 holes twice. The other thing that's not too common is the White and Blue tees. That in itself isn't too odd but there are also White and Blue pins (flags) on the same green. Overall, it's a pretty decent fun course if you're looking for a casual game. Why 3 stars? I'd probably give it 3.5 stars but we obviously can't do halves but I rounded down because the driving range ran out of balls yesterday... I've never had that happen before ever... read more

Colwood is a pretty straight forward course. No doglegs, no big hills. Every hole is pretty much the same -- straight. They just vary in distances. You also have to maneuver your way around the roads and take crosswalks to different parts of the course. The course is, however, well-maintained and is good for beginning golfers who don't want to deal with too many obstacles or hazards. I'd play here time to time to mix it up. It's only $13 for nine and $23 for 18 if you play on Tuesday with the e-coupon on the Colwood website. read more

Overpriced in every way. Balls are $2 more than gleeneoveer. It's not even a good driving range and they're charging more for less balls then most places. The par 3 isn't even a true par 3 for $15 bucks on 9 holes.... what a rip off. Why not just go to sah hah Lee and play for a few dollars more. I have been taking lessons from the pro at Colwood for some years. Their staff is professional and the lessons are given off grass which makes the practice so much more realistic than hitting off of mats. They have added some 40 and 60 yard targets on their practice range which have really paid off on my short game. Super place to have a beer and meet friends. Red tail hawks flying above or Canada geese in the fall is a bonus connection to nature. read more
