We had an amazing afternoon of golf while visiting the Portland area. We had a threesome and the course was in great shape. The layout is conducive to walking or riding. There are not a lot of hazards to encounter and play moves well. The beverage cart girl came by several times and was always friendly and service oriented. The staff work very hard to deliver abysmal customer service. Everyone seems allergic to hospitality. I had a 3:50 tee time Tuesday August 20th. Upon checking in I see a hand written sign that reads "no 18 hole carts after 3:40." I asked the girl up front what time they would like the carts back. She said there's no way to do it in the system. I give you money, you give me a key, and say have it back by 7:30. Even though sunset is at 8:15. But this was beyond comprehension. We paid for 9 instead. Even though I had a twilight tee time booked. I got to the bar and order a transfusion (vodka, ginger ale and a splash of grape juice). The bartender rolls his eyes and said if there's a line I don't make these there's too many ingredients. Again they strive to deliver a sub par product. Aside from squishy greens and dry fairways a good time was had by all despite the staffs best effort to squander our afternoon. read more

Okay easily one of my favorite courses in Portland. I am a new-ish golfer so don't hate on me when you read this and go to the course and don't have the most perfect fairways and greens cause I don't know too much better BUT this place is great. I feel it's always in good condition especially when the weather permits. Every course I play I have a most hated hole and here I don't, they are all so fun, challenging yet approachable especially for a new golfer. It's a course for everyone! One of my favorite things about Rose City is the full bar and full menu! They have everything you could ever want to enjoy your time. The staff is always excellent as well. This is an older course with lots of mature trees and character. Overall, it was not in the best shape (winter conditions?) And lacked some of the features of newer courses. But it is worth the price. The pace of play on the back side was terrible, as two groups started in front of us on 10. read more

Customer service was terrible. Rude, unhelpful, every person I talked to gave me a different answer to my question. Until I finally just wanted to cancel and I was told to go to the GolfNow website, I did and it told me I was unable to cancel for some unknown reason. I tried calling GolfNow, no answer. Says they're closed. I call Rose City again and ask to speak to someone about this because Dave was extremely rude, and unhelpful. The next person I spoke to, hung up on me. It wasn't until I had my boyfriend call (I am a woman) that we got ANY kind of help. Ridiculous. With my boyfriends call, the we're able to refund our reservation (what they kept telling me I had to go to GolfNow for). Based on the other reviews I'm reading, they don't like/help/speak to women. Rose City Golf Course sits in a ravine out between 60th and 80th in deep NE Portland. It's a nice spot of green in an otherwise old school residential neighborhood. This municipal golf course is in pretty good shape for, well, a municipal golf courses. Most cities don't take great care of their courses. But Rose City plays pretty well... even on a sloppy day in the dead of a wet Oregon winter. Winter weekend rates run something like $15 for 9 holes and $18 for twilight - play all you can play. Pull cart rental runs you $3 for 18 holes and is a seriously good investment on a rainy day. And yes, you can play in the rain - the course drains well. Although you will be slogging it out a bit. The course is fairly long and hilly. Mostly par 4's, a couple of 5's and a couple of short, kinda technical 3's. As far as hazards go, there is really only one water feature and another sort of marshy area, and then a few bunkers on some of the holes. Most of the natural features that interfere with play are the numerous trees that line the fairways. A few hols sport doglegs and if you're inconsistent like I am you can find yourself golfing in the woods a lot. Although sometimes it works in your favor - at least once I had a tree knock me back on to the green. The greens here can be a tad spotty. On at least one or two I felt like I was playing pool at a dive bar - uneven and pockmarked surfaces. But really that just adds some more technical skill to the game, right?vThe hills, especially on the back nine, make this course a nice fun workout if you walk. Clubhouse has a pro shop, grimy old locker room, hot food café with beer on draught and in cans, and a small area to hang out and maybe even watch a game. You can snag beers here to take out on the course as well. Definitely a course I'll be playing often... especially at those cheap rates! read more

Great course! Don't com here expecting Pebble Beach or Sawgrass, it is only a nice, well kept, and basic course. The fairways are wide and pretty flat, which is good for a person like me who seems to ALWAYS slices or hooks the ball; and the greens are big and fairly flat as well. There is not a typical driving range here, it is a BYOB range, and it is free. The restaurant is nothing special, they have all of the standards: hot dogs, burgers, beer, etc. I usually bring a sack-lunch and/or a six-pack (since I'm cheap). The cost is the same as East Moreland Golf Course; it isn't as nice, but at least there is not any goose crap like you will find all over Moreland!. read more

My neighborhood golf course! I'm surprised by the negative reviews; maybe times have changed or maybe there's some user error happening... I have to say, Rose City was the first golf course I, as a new golfer, screwed up my courage to visit and play without my golf-fluent friends. It was a great choice. All you have to do, as of 2021, is go to their website and reserve your tee time. If you want a golf cart, reserve a golf cart. I have no idea why it's so complicated for others but for myself, it was a couple clicks and some confirmation emails offering links to modify or cancel my tee time. As someone who for years has simply been a pedestrian walking around the course exterior, I was surprised to see the many time slots available and how affordable play is. The staff at the clubhouse were perfectly nice to me (I'm a lady!). Checked me in and pointed me in the direction of the first hole. The clubhouse interior does feel like a creepy neighbor's 1970's wood-paneled basement; I cannot speak to the grill. I understood it's a public course going in so wasn't expecting some posh clubhouse anyway. As I noticed some other reviews mentioned - it doesn't seem to be an especially challenging course, which makes it great for newbies/ casual players like me. It's just lovely and long enough to let you practice your drives, not a bunch of surprise hills surrounding the pin. No driving range. My one concern isn't really Rose City's fault so much as the neighbors. I regularly see people - not paying golfers - bring their dogs onto the course, or just strolling along the grass. It's not a park for humans or dogs, folks. It's a terrain where you or your dog could get beaned by a golf club, and it will be your fault for being where you aren't supposed to be. I wish there were more obvious signage on the Course's perimeter to remind neighbors that it's a) inconsiderate and b) dangerous to be goofing around on the actual course. As a former non-golfer I can honestly say I always felt confused about this - "Why are those people playing with their dogs down there? I thought it was just for golf, is it a public park after hours or something?" Now that I golf, I understand what the answer is supposed to be. As mentioned, there is a park adjoining so really no reason for anyone but paying golfers to be on the green. Anyway, I count myself lucky to have this gem so nearby. I'm up from Phoenix visiting family. After 2 days of rain, I thought I'd try walking 9 holes with my son's clubs at Rose City GC. What a treat. The pro was very nice and the fees were so reasonable ($17). With a glove and a sleeve of Callaways I was out of the pro shop and on the 1st tee for $35 where I was pleasantly surprised by the good course conditions after a couple days of rain. From the back tees it played longer than the 6552 yards on the card, but just enough to be challenging for my 7 handicap. I thought the course was pretty demanding from the tees but in a very subtle way. A tee ball in the fairway is not always enough as a ball on the wrong side of the fairway can leave a somewhat tricky approach. I loved it. The greens were smooth and running fairly quick, stimping around 10-10.5. (People, use your pitch repair tools). The course is fairly hilly, enough to add another dimension to the round without requiring hip repair surgery after couple hours. The pace of play was great. I teed off at 2:15 and walking, I finished the 9th hole at 3:45. We have some great courses in the desert, but this was a very fun and memorable 9 holes. I'll definitely return for a full 18. And I hear the burgers and beer in their busy, historic clubhouse are a deal, too! (No driving range--though they have a practice area where you can shag your own balls. No thanks.) read more

Great city course. I play this one throughout the year and it's usually in nice shape. I think the price is fair and the course is fun to play, challenging, interesting. Back several years, kitchen's claim was best MacTarnahan's pour in town. A solid Amber ale that used to taste brilliant out of their tap. The clubhouse is older, not updated. Kitchen offers some nice, down home breakfast. It's worth stopping in just for the breakfast even if you're not a golfer. I've seen the kitchen server clerk really work their tail off - serving and cooking at the same time. Price is fair, reasonable to walk. Putting green, not a driving range perse, but they have a place to hit balls free range (I guess). Shop has some limited offerings. Pro shop Staff ranges from unfriendly, to sometimes friendly and kind. read more

I needed to cancel one tee time from our golf reservation. As with Ryan, in a previous post, I tried Golf Now but they were useless. You can make a reservation without an account or password, but to cancel you have to go through what they call, "Five Easy Steps", and sign up. Very manipulative. I had heard a lot about it before I played there and was truly excited to play a round of golf. For a public golf course the upkeep and level of commitment by employees to make a beautiful course was very impressive. The course played very true and was a forgiving course. With that being said it was not a super challenging course. There was not many hazards in play and the fairways were very forgiving. If you are looking for a easy going course this is it. The course is design for people who rarely makes mistakes. You need to be a hard-core golfer to play here, and truly into the game. If you find yourself screaming, "four" perhaps, this may be not be ideal, since the fairway is wide but narrow. For the price, it's a fantastic course. The club house is very cute, almost from Snow White's cottage. The best thing about this course is the driving range. However, you do need to bring your own balls, but it's worth it. Plus, you get a nice leisure exercise when you pick up the balls. I go there when the sun sets to play some golf at the range, and accummulate some very nice golf balls at the same time. The driving range is on real grass, a major plus. It's been around since the early 1900's and to have it maintain the way it is currently, I say, great deal. read more

Great golf course. A lot of family history at Rose City. But the maintenance team is doing a terrible job managing the squirrels on the golf course. Too many golfers are feeding squirrels snacks. Now the squirrels have learned to chew and scratch through golf bags to get sandwiches and fritos. This is a health risk and danger to the golfers. I've had 2 nice golf bags (Ping Hoofer and Nike) ruined because of these squirrels. There are giant holes in the big pocket of both of my golf bags. When I reached out to the golf shop they never returned my messages. So don't play at Rose City. Your golf bag is likely to be ruined too. Go play any other golf course in Oregon where squirrels do not ruin golf bags. read more

I would leave zero stars if I could. So disappointing and the young man helping us at the desk today 7/18/2020 was horrible!!! The worst customer service ever. It is my son's birthday and I made a teatime for 7 PM for 8 people. We arrived there and he said there's no golf carts. One of the girls in our group couldn't walk the course. They didn't let us know that when we booked the teatime and he was not one bit empathetic when I explained the situation. Not even wanting him to make it happen because I understand policy's. When I was talking to him I pulled my mask out it was still covering my nose and mouth and he had the nerve to say ma'am please leave your mask on. Are you kidding me, I along with our entire group were shocked at this guys delivery. As a business owner I would fire this individual. You can teach someone to run a cash register but you can't teach someone heart or manners. read more

I live very close to this course. I call it my "home course." 18 holes here are all challenging in their own ways. The front 9 are more forgiving so most hackers should be ok. The back 9 are a little more tricky. If you stray too far you will be in the weeds for sure and your score will climb. The course conditions change dramatically with the seasons. The winter rains keep it moist and muddy, but in the summer with long dry stretches it gets dry and hard. The greens get very fast. The clubhouse is nice, decent pro shop and good prices on cold beers and food. Wish there was a driving range to warm up at, but oh well, can't have it all. Glad this is my "home course." read more

Garbage course conditions during the Oregon junior golf tournament. The person behind the counter was rude. Slow greens not fun too play. When the tournament was there last year there was a homeless guy behind hole 16 green threatening all of us junior golfers. I have lived next to this golf course my whole life, growing up putting on the greens, or at the driving range. This is definitely not one of he nicer golf courses in the city, but for being s public course, it's pretty great. The tea times are pretty cheap, the club house has a nice feel, the staff is helpful, and the course is pretty well kept and managed. Rose city has a free driving range, just bring your own balls and helmet. Good coarse, they reworked it a couple years ago, haven't played it since but keep meaning to, Seems to be a good city run spot. Soil drains good. Clubhouse has hot food and beer, what more does a golfer need? read more

As an aging duffer, this is fast becoming my favorite course. It is challenging without being intimidating. There is some water, but it's pretty easy to avoid. I think maintenance is quite good/acceptable. The clubhouse is old and worn, but I happen to admire old buildings, so it's fine..and a reasonably good sandwich to go with a beer afterward. read more

Honestly perfect course for a bogey golfer like me. A little challenge but enough space and short holes to get some pars and a chance for birdie here and there. Our club played a tournament here in October. Hilly and challenging, Rose City Golf Course is a fun track with lots of history. I've only played it once so far but definitely plan to return next season. One of the oldest muni courses in Portland, the track features plenty of trees and and a hilly layout that makes it challenging enough for golfers at all skill levels. Rates are very reasonable and everything is well maintained. The course seems to drain well so it may be a good Winter venue too. read more

Rose City is one of the worst public golf courses I've played due to the terrible clubhouse service & condition of the course. I made a tee time by calling Patrick at Rose City golf course for 2:36 for my dad & I; my mom wanted to join in so she called the next day to ask if it was possible to add one more, only to find out that they hadn't booked my tee time at all. Fortunately they said we could just come in around the same time & they'd fit us in. However, when we arrived Patrick was so incredibly rude, putting his hand up to shush me when I tried to explain our situation & only talked to my dad. He didn't apologize for losing our tee time & charged us full price for carts & fees. The course was full of dry dirt spots and patches of clovers. I have to play Rose City for tournaments, but there is no way I'd choose to play here for fun. Driving south to Oregon City or across the Columbia to Washington is far more worth it than playing this Portland public golf course. read more

Rose City is a well kept up course smack dab in the middle of Portland. It isn't too challenging, but it's far from easy either. The fairways are pretty wide and generous for golfers of all skill levels. Super Twilight is a pretty good deal at $13. The back nine is really wide open. Golf course itself is a four but with no marshal or starter on a Sunday I will likely not be returning again for weekend play. Not fond of 5 hour rounds especially when there are lots of available tee times shown online. I know golf has become a little less popular but poor management only contributes to the declining play at our city courses. read more

Not bad, i would say a cross between glendoveer and east moreland. Nothing fancy but nice to have in NE. The cost between this place and the others seem a little steep for weekend plus carts and for this price I would almost always prefer heron lakes. The grounds are kept pretty well but it seems as though they could pay a little more attention to fairway maintenance. At times it was hard to tell the fairway and the rough. read more
