Broth in bun rieu was piping hot (which is great) but flavor wasn't that rich. They got some homemade meatballs with lots of fat that I dislike. I was given lettuce as a side which was the first. This place is an institution, it has been here since forever. Not much has changed since I first came here. The servers, decor, and food is pretty much the same. Decent service, they are very fast and don't try to be sweet. You can ask for recommendations from the servers too, they are honest. The menu is massive and will more than likely have something for everyone (even vegetarian options), so I think it's great for a big party. I really recommend their bánh cuốn (steamed rice rolls), even if it usually takes much longer than the other things on the menu. The food usually comes out at the same time. The portions are good but a bit on the pricey side. I don't like that they cut their gỏi cuốn (summer roll) into 4 instead of leaving it whole and stuff it a lot with veggie and noodles. It's a bit skimpy on the meat and shrimp. The peanut sauce is really good though it is a big on the sweeter side. It is very smooth. The only reason I gave 4 stars was because the pricing was actually more expensive then expected. The food is amazing! I frequently order both the braised duck soup with egg noodles (M1) and the 8 special dishes with broken or steamed rice (C1) and have yet to be disappointed. The service is quick with nice hot tea during the cold months and refreshingly ice cold water during the hot months that is served soon after you sit down. We both agreed that the veggies was a bit much but the main entrees were delicious. The portions were fair though for the dishes we had. Com mai gets high marks for me bc it's unique in that it serves and highlights other Vietnamese dishes that is not what you'd typically get from common Vietnamese restaurants. The broth is well-seasoned and aromatic with vermicelli noodles and garnished with fried onions, green onions, and cilantro. The duck is always so tender and it's served on a separate plate with bean sprouts, basil, pickled carrots and radish, and a lime wedge. I've been occasional eating here for the past 7 years and they still have the same waiter! I usually only order their rice entrées because you can mix and match the sides to whatever combination you like. They do have vermicelli or egg noodle dishes, but I personally have not tried them, since I only came here for the rice dishes. I walked in today and asked the person at the front counter if I could order coffee to go, and they replied in an annoyed voice that they didn't serve coffee there. So I looked at the menu and asked if I could order some egg rolls, and they said they weren't serving the one I asked about, so I asked for another kind. Then they told me that same annoyed voice "It will take 20 minutes to cook!" And I said that that was fine and asked if I could pay with card. They pointed angrily to a sign that said the order must be $10 or more to use a card. So I looked at the menu a little bit longer and the person walked away from the counter and left me standing there for a little while. Then I caught their eye, and they came back and I ordered another dish that was just over $13 and they printed me a ticket which listed the an item for $15, and when I asked him about this and expressed that that was not what I was trying to order, they took the receipt back from me and returned my card telling me that they were not going to serve me today. Delicious, authentic, and affordable Vietnamese food describes Com Mai in a nutshell. This is a casual no-frills Vietnamese restaurant where you can find some great hard-to-find dishes. The restaurant opened November 2014 in a sprawling shopping center on Pleasant Hill Road in a strip between Guitar Center and Planet Fitness. There's not much to the place and virtually no ambiance to speak of. This humble "mom and pop" shop is all about the food. There are about a dozen booths and, for larger parties, a smattering of tables thrown together in the back. At first glance, Com Mai most reminded me of the now-defunct Buford Highway Vietnamese restaurant Quan Ba 9 because of its many unique noodle dishes. Funny enough, I found out later Com Mai's owner and cook came from there, so it makes sense! Note this is not a pho restaurant and in fact, pho is nowhere to be found on the menu. The restaurant serves a little bit of everything else similar to other metro Atlanta Vietnamese restaurants like Nam Phuong, Chateau Saigon, New Saigon, and Lotus. Com Mai offers several different types of spring rolls and egg rolls, a variety of salads including Goi Xoai (mango salad with dried shrimp) and Goi Muc Kieu Thai Lan (spicy Thai squid salad), a limited selection of Bahn Mi sandwiches, and a wide assortment of Com Dia (rice plates), Bun (rice vermicelli noodles), Bun Nuoc (rice vermicelli noodle soup), Hu Tieu Mi (rice/egg noodle soup), Bo Kho (beef stew), and Banh Cuon (steamed rolled pancakes). In general, everything I've tried here has tasted good to great. Excellent presentation and prices are reasonable with most dishes costing about $8-9 each. One of the restaurant's most popular and highly recommended dishes isn't on the menu: Mi Quang. This is a regional Vietnamese noodle dish that is quite strong in flavor. Technically not a noodle soup, though the amount of broth/sauce in the bowl could have you believe so, the noodles are flat wide rice noodles. Ingredients in Com Mai's version include chopped boneless chicken and pork, hard boiled quail eggs, onion, cilantro, crushed peanuts, and rice sesame crackers. Fresh vegetables served on the side are shredded cabbage (white and red, but mainly white), lettuce, cilantro, lime, and jalapeno. The strong broth makes the Mi Quang an intensely flavorful and delicious dish. The vegetables are fresh, the pieces of chicken and pork savory, the noodles soft, smooth, and scrumptious, and the crackers crisp. Another popular and suggested item is the Bun Mang Vit, duck and bamboo noodle soup. This is one of Com Mai's specialties and is an excellent light noodle soup. It's made with soft and slippery rice vermicelli noodles in a clear broth with bamboo shoots, fried shallots, cilantro, scallion, onion, and congealed blood cubes. Served on the side in a separate dish is a small salad with steamed duck (bone-in), pickled carrots and daikon radish, more fried shallots, chopped basil, cilantro, shredded white cabbage, lime, and jalapeno. The quality of the ingredients is good and everything is nicely prepared. The duck is tender and appetizing on its own. If you find the broth to be too bland, Bun Mang Vit also comes with a side of Nuoc Mam Gung, which is Vietnamese fish sauce (nuoc mam) with added chilies, ginger, garlic, sugar, and lime/lemon. It packs a punch. An alternative to the Bun Mang Vit is the Mi Vit Tiem, which is a braised duck noodle soup. This is a richer soup with a dark brown broth and thin egg noodles (as opposed to rice noodles). The bone-in braised duck is served directly in the bowl with leafy green veggies, making it similar to Hong Kong-style roast duck noodle soup. Full of flavor, very good, and comforting. Another entree worth ordering is the Banh Cuon Dac Biet, Vietnamese steamed rolled pancake combination. The Banh Cuon has a neat "homemade" quality to it. The rolls are similar to Chinese Cantonese dim sum rice noodle rolls (cheong fun) in terms of their smooth, soft, thin, and delicate texture and consistency. Com Mai's Banh Cuon Dac Biet comes with Vietnamese sausage, Vietnamese ham/pork roll (cha lua), mung bean cake, bean sprouts, basil, and a dipping sauce. It's delectable. Don't sleep on Com Mai's drinks and desserts. Along with Vietnamese coffee, they have authentic Vietnamese beverages such as Chanh Muoi (salted and pickled limeade), Soda Chanh (the soda version), and even Soda Sua Hot Ga. The latter is a sweet drink that tastes better than it sounds, made with egg yolk, sweetened condensed milk, and club soda. Admittedly, the Chanh Muoi and Soda Chanh are more of acquired tastes as they are sharply tart, but mightily refreshing. Com Mai has a small selection of Sinh To (smoothies) and Che (pudding). The Che here is surprisingly good! Try the Che Thai which is an Asian fruit cocktail made with crushed ice, coconut cream, jellies, and fruit such as durian, jackfruit, and lychee. But today was the last time I will be coming here. Quick story: I came in today to order to go(I haven't been here in so long). She didn't greet us and just stared at us. Then she says are you paying in cash? I said we have credit cards. Their credit card machine was down. So we had some cash on us but not a lot. I ordered two dishes and was short $3. She was demanding the remaining amount very aggressively. I told my boyfriend to drive home and get cash. The staff is friendly and attentive here! If you're thirsty, you're in luck because they refill your water as soon as it hits the half mark. I had the Mi Quang. It comes with the veggie condiments which were very clean and fresh! I give my meal 3.5 stars because I had high expectations and was slightly disappointed.. The broth was a bit greasy for me because I felt the need to wipe my mouth after every bite, (and I'm usually a clean eater!) My companion had Com Suon Nuong and seemed to enjoy his order! I came to check out Com Mai on a Friday night for their GRAND OPENING and was very pleasantly surprised! To be honest, Vietnamese food doesn't excite me like it used to anymore. I have been to many Asian and so-called Vietnamese restaurant in Georgia and they more or less all serve the same basic food. BORING!! Com Mai offers the "forgotten dishes" also known as, authentic Vietnamese dishes that are hard to find in a majority of Vietnamese Restaurants now a day. Com Mai is located in the same shopping center as Don Pedro, Planet Fitness, and Guitar Center. It is also at the intersection of Pleasant Hill Road & Club Drive. It can easily be missed since the location is far back & hard to see. The FORGOTTEN DISHES are Vietnamese Dishes that are hard to make, hard to find & require Chefs to originate from a certain region (North or South) in Vietnam to deliver the exact flavor of the dish from that region. Here are a list of the dishes I've tried & what I think about them 1. Bun Mam- Vietnamese Gumbo, a rarely found fermented thick Vietnamese vermicelli soup. "Bun" refers to the steamed rice vermicelli, and the key to this soup is the "mam", as in mam ca loc (fermented fish paste) or mam tom (fermented shrimp paste). I didn't hesitate to order this and out came a huge bowl of murky opaque broth filed with thin vermicelli noodles, coarse chunks of skin-on salmon steak, shrimp, squid, sprouts, basil leaves, etc. The best ways to describe it: Rich, smelly, salty, heady, tangy, sweet & sour, spicy and pungent. 9/10 2. Mi Quang- is a Vietnamese Flat noodle dish that originated from Quang Nam Province in central Vietnam. Part soup, part salad, it's rich with chicken broth and tinted yellow rice noodles, freshened up with crunchy vegetables, and topped with everything from chicken to shrimp to Pork. Mi Quang also comes with extras such as hard-boiled egg, crushed peanuts, Cha (Steamed Pork Sausage), chili pepper or chilli sauce, fresh vegetables and pieces of toasted sesame rice crackers called bánh tráng me. I would rate this dish 9 out of 10. 3. Banh Cuon- also known as "Rolled Cake", is made from a thin, wide sheet of steamed rice batter filled with seasoned ground pork, minced mushrooms, and fried shallots. Sides for this dish usually consist of Cha Lua (Vietnamese pork sausage), sliced cucumber, and bean sprouts, with Fish Sauce as the dipping sauce. This is my favorite dish here. The Banh Cuon here are made on the go so it's definitely fresh & tasty. 10/10 4. Mi Vit Tiem- is simply Roasted Duck with Egg Noodle Soup.The Mi Vit Tiem is the signature dish here & it's definitely the best.The Duck & the broth were both flavorful.The noodles has the right consistency of soft and chewy and the vegetables were a nice complement to everything else. It was sweet, but not sugary. Dark in color, but light on your palate. The duck, marinated and braised, was plentiful and juicy. 10/10 5. Goi Xoai- (Green Mango Salad), is made with very firm, green mangoes marinated in a garlicky, pungent fish sauce. I thought the Mango Salad was on the sour side, so make sure you are aware of this.The mango was very crunchy and tasty. I would recommend this dish if you like sour stuff. 8/10 6. Bun Thai'- was outstanding! To me, Bun Thai taste more like Bun with Canh Chua (Vermicelli & sweet/ sour soup). After trying everything I have to say my favorite dish is the Mi Vit Tiem. The broth was made out of soup & herbs. The herbs made the broth very flavorful & the smell was was just so relaxing. Service is lightning speed here. They want to take your order as soon as you sit down & they want to make sure the food gets out to you quick. Everything about this place is fast moving. All in all, one of the better Vietnamese places that offers hard to find dishes. The service is good, the price is reasonable, and the food is...you already know..AMAZING!!! This dish was what I grew up in Vietnam eating. This dish consist of you mixing the silky white noodles with the shreded pork with all the veggies. Then your pour on coconut cream and sweet fish sauce. Peanuts is an option and most people would get peanuts....but if you are allergic to this, make sure to let them know or else they will put peanuts on the plate. I really liked this dish! They execute this plate really well! I would say only my sister makes this better...but then I might be biased on that lol. For the com dac biet (special rice plate) is nothing special. You can get that anywhere. I also got the avocado smoothie and that was good. Not light and unsweetened like some restaurant. 2 bad experiences that's why I'm writing this review! First, there is this one waitress that works here that is so RUDE! The way she talks, looks at you when she takes the order is disgusting. Second, I ordered 3 canh bun, I called 15 minutes in advance before coming to pick it up and ended up waiting for nearly 30 minutes at the restaurant because they were missing one ingredient and have to wait for someone to go buy it. They could've at least told me on the phone they didn't have it or when I came to pay but no, after taking my money they just told me "wait a minute" let me sit there for nearly half an hour. While I was waiting this couple came in and ordered the same thing - canh bun, I heard she asked the chef if there was still any rau muong left (the missing ingredient) and they said yes!!! Then served those two their canh bun right away... so they weren't really missing their ingredients right.. their canh bun is 7/10 so even though it's alright, I won't ever come back for their services. read more

Com Mai offers many authentic Vietnamese dishes that are hard to find in Georgia. Great prices, food, & service. I love that Vietnamese food's always so cheap & delicious! Com Mai is located in the same shopping center as Planet Fitness & Don Pedro at the intersection of Club Dr & Pleasant Hill. I was excited about many items on the menu but this is what we ended up ordering: ~ bun mam (Vietnamese gumbo - fermented fish broth, rice vermicelli, seafood, pork) - this is my favorite Vietnamese noodle soup. I've been craving it for awhile but have not been able to find a good bowl until Com Mai. It does smell bc of the fermented fish so eat at your own risk. ~ mi vit tiem (Vietnamese roasted duck soup w/ egg noodle) - huge portion; you get a whole duck leg. I never actually post reviews on yelp. But since this is a new business I figured why not just share my thoughts. I've been to Com Mai twice this week and it's been good. So far. My first time here, I ordered food togo. I had the Bun Mang Vit for my brother & Banh Uot Dac Biet for myself. The portion itself was pretty decent. My brother said his bun was good. My Banh Uot was also delicious. Although a little more meat would have been better. The second time I was here, I came with a good friend of mine and we dined in. This time I wanted to try their bun mang vit, but the waiter said they were out, so I tried their bun mam instead. Which was good, I haven't had bun mam in awhile so I'm not quite sure on how it was actually suppose to be like. But it was good to me. My friend had the bun bo hue, and I tried the broth and it wasn't as... Flavorful. It didn't taste like bun bo hue, my friend had to add a little more fish sauce and other stuff to it to make it a little more tasty. I guess it's a hit and miss on what you order. The don't have PHO...... I gave it 5 stars, some ppl may disagree but all the food I ordered was different but better than most place places. I got the 1. Squid Salad ( spicy) 2. Hue beef noodles 3. Charbroiled chicken It may be a small sample size but it was all so delish esp the salad, it's heavy on the ginger fyi. The place was full of Vietnamese couples and families, which is always a good sign and no FRIED RICE. Always a good sign. TRY IT. I was told Sunday is a super busy day. The server was super busy doing it all but she Was very nice even being swamped. Also she explains what sauce goes with what dish. read more
