Poor experience. I visited this office for a routine cleaning, as I do every 6 months. This practice gives the impression they're more concerned with forcing Xrays and monetizing than performing a proper comfortable cleaning. Today's visit was particularly concerning given I was worked on by an inexperienced hygienist who clearly needed more time on task in an training/educational environment. Then came the dentist himself, Dr. Mercer, who made a clumsy attempt at small talk and then dove right into trying to persuade me that I needed Xrays to examine plaque below the gumline, stating that I had quite a buildup that may require a deep cleaning, even though I had a normal cleaning 6 months prior with no indication of this. His conversational tone was condescending. When I told him I do not like being irradiated regularly and that I had enough of that over the past year, he defaults to asking if it was cancer treatment. Seriously? That's the question as opposed to something simple like, "Have you had a lot of Xray or other forms of imaging done recently?" He continued with trying to educate me on the finer points of gingivitis and gum disease, in a condescending tone. I informed this person that I brush twice daily, and use a waterpick. I then inquired about what other steps he would recommended. He went right back to the Xray nonsense. When I asked why he couldn't look at a prior Xray, he quizzed me on when the last time was I had Xrays completed. You should know this. You're supposed to be the professional. Do you not even bother examining patient information prior to interacting and examining? Is this how patients are routinely treated at this practice? The "CARE" feels more for how much they can charge the insurance provider, rather than caring for the patient. I'm likely in search of a new dentist after this experience. read more

I typically don't leave reviews, but I feel compelled to share my recent experience with Comfort Dental. I visited this location while in severe pain and had to get a tooth extracted. In the middle of that distress, I paid out of pocket just to get the treatment done immediately. The very next day, I called the office to request a refund so I could go through my insurance instead. What followed was incredibly frustrating. I was repeatedly given the runaround -- I had to follow up multiple times just to get any answers. At one point, I was told I could receive a refund via check, and I submitted my insurance information as requested. Then, after all the follow-ups and delays, I was suddenly told that a cash refund was no longer an option. This entire situation could have been handled with more professionalism, transparency, and empathy -- especially considering I was in pain and trying to navigate the process in good faith. I paid upfront to get urgent care, but I feel like I was misled and ultimately ignored when trying to get the matter resolved. read more

Writing this review so it can help Someone. I was excited to start my braces journey so i went to comfort dental I got work done from Dr.Van dusen. After going over the treatment plan he started on some crowns and root canals he said I needed . I paid 6k for all the work. He let a student do my temporaries for me while I waited for my real crowns. I left out of there with temps that looked ridiculous didn't even look like teeth ! He even let out a giggle when he seen the students work which is very sad to me because he does not care about his patients just the money!! I was younger back then so it was hard for me to speak up. We are all still human btw!! The crowns on my back tooth have always been painful to chew on since I got them and they hurt. My front crowns all click and make noise they also are very sensitive. When taking my impressions for the front crowns the student informed van dusen he did something wrong and the impression was off but he told the student it was ok ! I now walk around with 4 oversized front crowns ! It has altered my face and made the area Around my mouth look huge !! He emphasized my overbite with the crowns. I never did start the braces journey it wasn't on the treatment plan I also no longer felt comfortable to return to confront dental which is ironic given the name. I write this because my biggest regret was getting work done with this dentist . I had seen another very great dentist before I van dusen and was quoted around the same prize which I now regret not going to instead. I only went to van dusen Bcus he was closer to my home . Please take that extra drive and go see a good dentist !! This experience has changed my life forever and so has the horrible dental work that I don't just have money to fix overnight !! read more

This week they had to get my insurance card again because they lost the information that they had from my insurance card last week. Time to get a new dentist. This place is really bad. I saw Dr. Van Dusen three times in 2024. I will never return and I urge the reader to listen. After initial assessment, a treatment plan was given to me, with so much work I got suspicious. He did a deep cleaning on right side, but the injections were hell. No topical, no warning, and he jabbed jabbed jabbed and only said, "these are no fun." I'm an old lady. I actually peed myself it was so shocking and painful. He also gave me a root canal I DID NOT NEED, as assessed by another provider. This guy is a slob and a liar. I have been a client for years, I will no longer use this office. In October I tried to get a teeth cleaning 3 weeks out for when I would be in Phoenix again (it is a 150 mile round trip to this office). I was told sorry we don't do appointments that far out, but yet today when I called to get off the text list, I was informed they could set up in January, but don't do 3 weeks out. If they can't look at a calendar and see January is 3 weeks out I don't want them as a dentist. Stupid thing to lose a customer over. read more

I went to see Dr. Van Dusen last year around August 2023 for a cleaning. Being that I am not from here I was not aware that I couldn't get a cleaning on first visit but he did the cleaning anyways, which I did appreciate. However, once they took x-rays and the cleaning was done he proceeded to tell me I had 7 cavities. I had just moved here in 2022 and I was going to my dentist where I lived faithfully every 6 months for cleanings, so I didn't think that was accurate. He didn't show me any X-rays or any type of proof of said cavities. I didn't go back to have any of these so called cavities filled, I did however go to another dentist for a check up recently. They asked me when I had my last cleaning and I told them and I never mentioned that Dr. Van Dusen said that I had 7 cavities, as I wanted to see what this new dentist would tell me. So the new dentist went over everything, showed me X-rays and very clear close up pictures. When she was done I asked if I had any cavities and she said no. I then told her that is the reason why I never went back to comfort dental because I knew there was no way I had 7 cavities. I would not recommend anyone going to this place. They would've drill and filled healthy teeth if I would've went with the 7 cavity story that he was trying to sell me on. My husband also had an issue where he needed a tooth pulled and they couldn't even get the tooth out and just left it hanging in his mouth. Dr. Van Dusen didn't pull his tooth and I can't remember the dr's name but it just seems like a lot of incompetence going on in that place. STAY AWAY. read more

Found this place on Yelp over a year ago and have been coming back ever since. Recently I come during my 6 month check ups but as always there may be a chip, filling or cavity that arises. Office is so old, it probably hasn't been updated in over 15 years. Chairs in the waiting room are stained. Dental exam chairs seem quite beat in. there is a wait of over 45 mins every time I come even though I have an appointment. I've never had to wait this long for a dentist. They seem to be short staffed and behind. All in all, it has not been a good customer experience here. Went for "emergency" dental work. Took 2 hours just to get an x-ray and was told I needed to make another appointment. I needed a sooner appointment so had to schedule at eat mesa office. Was told need to sign release to have x-rays emailed. Day of the appointment came and we had a family incident occur, I called to have our appointments rescheduled and she put me on hold. Wasn't on hold for even 10 seconds before the line hung up on me. I called back, some other lady answered and I explained I was put on hold and hung up on. She immediately put me on hold again and I sat on hold for 10 minutes before the First Lady I spoke to answered. I explained I wanted to reschedule and she asked me a bunch questions like our names and birthday again even though I was only rescheduling. Whatever, then we get to the part of what day and time would work, and she put me on hold again!?!? Haven't even gone in for an appointment and already disappointed. I had a friend refer me to this office. She also did not have insurance. On our first visit after seeing the doctor the lady scheduling our next appointment was very rude. I asked how much the extraction would be and her answer was the doctor already told you. The doctor never discussed payment with me. I was really confused. I made the appointment and we left.After my son and I got into the car i realized they never charged me for the visit. I went back inside to pay and thats when the front desk lady tells me she had the wrong patient chart up when talking to us. The dentist is fine, the office staff is the issue. We have dental insurance, however the portion that we pay was the problem, not once but 3 times! They ask for "your portion" up front. Then when you receive your "explanation of benefits" from your dental insurance, you see that the dentist was overpaid for the work that was done. They get reimbursed more from the insurance, so the customer is the loser! I brought this to their attention twice, they acknowledged it and said they would credit on the next time we came in. Again they overcharged me, sent it to insurance and got more than they should have. I sent them a letter and asked for a refund. I even sent a copy of my "E.O.B." for the year, and never heard a word. What bothers me, is they don't care, and also the insurance is unaware of this scam. He came back and then shoved a needle straight into my gums without warning. He was very short and has given me so much anxiety around dentists since then. I have been with this dental company for 4 years. I have been very patient with them. Every time I come I end up waiting for a long time, today was 45 minutes. They say they send out reminders and then they never do. They don't call for reminders or send out postage reminders like they say they do. They don't have my birthday right, they don't have my address right, even though I keep correcting them. They told my daughter her baby teeth were out and she still had more coming in.
