After the government shutdown, I realized how awesome the Commissary really is, in relation to the other supermarkets on Oahu. I'm used to mainland prices, so I thought Commissary prices were OK, but in actuality, they are freaking amazing. Normally for a weeks worth of groceries, we spend about $80. During the shutdown, we went to Foodland, spent about $60 on half of what we normally need. (e.g. $2.50 for my Special K cereal vs. $6.50 at Foodland - um what???) I'm still partial to going to Chinatown for veggies and fruits because the variety there for Asian goods is much larger, and they are fresher and cheaper. I stick to the meat at the Commissary because it's cheap and seems to me more sanitary than Chinatown meat markets. Yes, it's a hell house during certain days and/or hours. If you want to avoid the craziness, just go early. I'm sorry for ever doubting you, Commissary! read more

You can still find something here for $1 sometimes when they got a special. This location is bigger than Hickam. This is my go to place to shop for my gluten free items since they starting expanding their selection. I can gluten free bread, Tyson gluten free chicken nuggets, and nitrite free hot dogs. They even got gluten free, dairy free ice cream. That's awesome since if I only shopped at whole foods for everything, I'd probably be broke. Just have trying to shop smart for my son that has the allergies. You can get bread for $2-3 and don't ha e to wait for a sale. You can get salad dressing for $2. If you tried to get these things even at a food store like Safeway or Foodland, I'd spend double that. Some things may not be a deal there like shampoo, diapers, and cleaning products, but I guess that's the price for convenience. Love how you get your groceries bagged and carried to your car as long as you tip them. You do need to have a military ID to enter and can't enter as a guest. But if you wanna piggyback on someone's ID, go to K-bay or Schofield. read more

They're bringing in so much more organic options to the aisles. They even have things like high mineral pink salt and kerrygold butter. It's still not enough for my liking and I still make my weekly trips to whole foods but it gets 4 stars when compared to my last duty station commissary. 1 star knocked off because the lines are too long a lot of the time. read more

Just got a big thumbs down!!! They have apparently changed the coupon policy. The manufacturer coupons that the put on the shelf have always been a use as many as you want kind of thing. Now they have decided to take just 2 per item!! And the only sign is at the register. Don't you think that is something to tell people BEFORE they fill their carts up??? I left $400 of stuff at register and left. Have fun putting it away. read more

We utilized the Commissary in FEB 2013 on our first trip to Hawaii. We were shocked to see how long the lines were. I have also been in other commissary's and agree with many of the other reviewers, the selection is excellent. Not much interaction with the employees, but have not had an unpleasant experience. My main observation and therefore gripe is the rudeness of the customers. They appear to have no grocery shopping etiquette. They cut in front of you, there is the infamous family or friend chit chat sessions in the middle of the aisle and let us not forget talking on the phone while shopping. The top oblivious award goes to the parent(s) with multiple urchins runners amok while talking on the phone. Honestly, I have never seen so many bewildered people in one place attempting such a simple task as grocery shopping. I wonder how they will survive in civilian markets when they are no longer able to shop at the commissary? Based on the one experience my wife refuses to step foot into any commissary again. read more

This is the best place to shop on the island and unfortunately it's "members only." So you get a lot of great perks for being in the military one of which is the commissary. The prices are usually about 10-20% lower and selections is decent. No sales tax. There is a surcharge for something IDK maybe the plastic bags. I have made the switch to bringing in cloth bags to save the environment. Don't buy them there though. The green bags are cheap and break. Get some cloth bags somewhere else and "save a bundle." Some things are more expensive though to include produce. If you can visit a farmers market and support local Hawaiian farmers please do so. Also, this is the best commissary on the island so the parking lot is always busy. The location is great since it is next to the NEX, food court, gas station, and other vendor shops. read more

I avoid this commissary like the plague. A few months ago there was a complete reset done. I had hoped for a better flowing produce area, maybe a little sit down area by the deli, as I have seen at other commissaries. But, no! All that was done was switching the content of the aisles to the exact opposite. For a short while the self check-out had finally been cleaned of all the extra shelves of junk food, making it easier to navigate this very tight area. Now, the shelves are back, and the area feels claustrophobic. I have yet to find an item at this commissary that the Hickam commissary doesn't carry. Bigger, isn't always better. read more

Compared to the Hickam Commissary, i'm not a fan of this one! Parking is always such a hassle, and the lines are always long. There are even times when there is a line to just show your mil id. The only thing I really like about this commissary is the bakery. I've always ordered cakes here, and have been very pleased. The employees at the bakery are probably the only friendly employees in the store. Everyone else is rude, in my experiences anyway. And you can never find a employee to help if you need to find something. Self-check out machines here are kind of screwy. If it weren't for the bakery, I'd never come here! read more

Private shopping, got all the good stuff. You probably can't get like Jordans or anything like that but we picked up a few things. No tax, that's a great perk. But it's military discount, if you can find a NEX Commissary you're gonna get no tax anyways. But there are somethings that you can find cheaper elsewhere than there. So if you're a shopaholic and like to save money, you should definitely do some research. Everything is a hit and miss. But I like it. read more

Second time shopping here at the commissary. First time the line went all the way back beyond the ice cream freezers with only 3 cashiers running. Today the lone wraps all the way back to the eggs and only 7 open. Ridiculous! There are 22 lanes! At least cashiers are gratious read more

Just a nice clean store with reasonable prices on the island. Could use a bit more local kind of food though.

Well first of all I want to say that management or at least the manager I dealt with tonight (Philippino lady) was so very unhelpful. We left not purchasing all we needed. I'm 9 and a half months pregnant and am using the WIC program and a couple items were wrong. My cashier Anthony (great cashier btw, excellent customer service, so polite and helpful) asked for assistance because we could not find the correct item but the manager ignored him the first time and when she was called again, she very rudely told us they can't give us whatever item it was, they were out or she would have to go check in the back. She took so long that it made us uncomfortable and the customers behind us as well. We opted to leave that item simply to leave. This should not be how management handle situations. I want to say thank you to Anthony our cashier because he truly tried his best, he even ran to the back to make sure we received all our items however they were unavailable outside and management was not very willing to do her job and simply collect them. The only reason I'm not giving one star is per his excellent customer service. Thank you Anthony. & I hope management is followed up with or taught how to handle situations like these. read more

The NEX commissary is a great place to go for the cheapest prices on groceries on the Island. By far cheaper than any other grocery store, especially in terms of fresh produce. However, I have found that Safeway has cheaper milk prices. You really need to pay attention to the day/time that you go though, because it can get really crowded at times... I'm talking the line can wrap around the entire inside walls of the store! also, towards the end of the day and on days like Sunday, the shelves can be pretty blown out at times. It isn't unusual for them to be out of stock of an item that I am looking for. Despite all of this, I always go here for the majority of my groceries because the prices are so much cheaper than anywhere else. read more

It's difficult to rate this place accordingly because I am sincerely grateful for the cost of goods here, especially compared to the stores out in town. The stock runs out quickly, the produce has oftentimes gone bad and is displayed in its rotten state. The employees are unbelievably rude, from the cashiers who act like they're too good to be there to the baggers that force you to "use their services", and will give you dirty looks if you ask them to not bag your stuff (sometimes I don't have the cash on hand to tip them and I just want to bag my own stuff). read more

Good place to buy cheap meats and cereal. the fruits and vegetable however is sometimes cheaper at other supermarkets. You will need a military I.D. to get in. Other than that it is your typical supermarket. read more

It's like any other grocery store it has mostly what you looking for if you making a meal for you family. The only thing is that it only for military, family and workers that work there. Everything is cheap and you don't have to pay tax witch is a plus. If you love to coupon this place is where to go. read more

Its not the best commissary I have ever shopped at. I try to avoid shopping at the commissary when possible; but in Hawaii, its economically savvy. A couple reasons do not particularly favor this commissary: 1: Parking is ridiculous unless you arrive at at least 15 minutes before they open (9:00am). 2: I have purchased a considerable amount of meat (Especially GROUND BEEF) that is marked at a Lean Grade meat; only to find after browning/cooking that over 75% of the product is fillers and fat. 3: Most recently I purchased 93/7% grade of lean ground beef that had something that appeared to be round macaroni shaped particles in it. I was thoroughly disgusted. I don't want my money back, I don't want to trade for another ground beef product. Ill never eat it again. 4. If you ID is expired and they don't catch it at the door, you spend your time shopping for groceries for them to catch it at the check out lane. At that point you will not be able to purchase the items you have in your cart. 5. WIC is often an issue if you don't separate the items on the conveyer per/coupon or have a cashier that is in training. They do not make anything discrete when needing help at the register. It takes a number of different employees muttering in a foreign tongue to figure out something simple. I am not a racist, judgmental or anything to a biased extreme. What's not to like about the commissary? I think it's a toss up as to which is better - this one or Hickam's, but this has the mall next to it, and the proximity of all of the other stores and vendors maybe pushes this one to the top for me. And I appreciate the fact that both do not allow visitors. It's crowded enough without visitors who have not earned the right to shop there. read more

Great selection but meh service for the bag people who expect to help you and expect you to pay them to do so. I understand working on tips alone but honestly I can bag my own stuff and you grab it before I have a chance to do anything so please do not expect me to give you cash that I do not have. Grumpy grumbling and muttering under your breath as you stomp away certainly will not encourage me to seek out and money I may have stuffed in the bottom of my wallet. I can't decide which commissary I like more this one or hickam commissary... There are a few items that he nex doesn't have stocked that hickam does and vice versa. I would say the nex has a better yogurt selection. The hickam commissary is generally less crowded though. read more

Never enough cashiers on pay days or weekends. You go there, and it's 3 or 4 people working. They go a great job stocking the place, but fruits and veggies seem to go bad fast. Customer service varies every time. I've had great service, I've had awful service. read more

What is new here is the lack of stock. I understand that's a challenge of island living though. It is just very frustrating. There are lots of things to love about the NEX commissary. They pretty much carry any item that you are looking for. I love their large selection and low prices. Some of the produce is hit or miss. One week it's great and the next week not so much. I try to shop on weekday evenings or no later than 11 am on a weekend. The weekend shopping experience is a little like black Friday . I've been in checkout lines that start in the dairy section. If you can avoid shopping during the busy hours , I think it's one of the best commissaries on the island. read more

This Commissary is HUGE, and I have to admit a bit overwhelming to shop at. They have a huge selection of produce in comparison to the Hickam Commissary. They also have a larger selection of just about everything, but to the point it is a little daunting. Every time we go the lines and crowds there are so insane that I actively try to avoid the commissary unless we are shopping at the NEX and need to pick up a few grocery items as well. read more

What a Service! Went on Tuesday morning to buy some groceries and when we were at the register myself and my dad noticed that we didn't pay the 4 items. After the transaction was completed I start scan my ID again to continue pay the 4 items and cashier in charge start asking this Question to my Dad!!! Sir let me see your ID? What??? Really; told her that my dad is with me why she needs to check ID again after we paid off all the groceries. She never let me finished talking and she just grab the 4 items in the register and said *Sorry you cannot do that* We left the store and I called after 45 mins ago to complaint and I asked for the Store Director. A lady who answer the phone couldn't understand Me and she said I don't know where is the manager but I can call the Supervisor Ma'am! Okay fine by me. The Supervisor said sorry ma'am I can't hear you and just hang up the phone!!! Sometimes it's not about the savings money it's about the Customer service and how you handle the problems. I like this commissary because it is larger than MCBH's commissary. The last few times I've gone though...it has been a nightmare. People EVERYWHERE!!! Rude women literally running into me with their carts....oblivious to your existence. These are even on days that are not pay day. It just seems like a three ring circus every time I go. It is a very nice commissary. That being siad, it is always crowded. Especially surrounding pay day. I liked to go early and get the shopping trip over with. It is hit or miss with the baggers. It is one of the cheapest places on island to grocery shop. Make sure you have a little something to tip the bagger or it could get ugly if they carry your items out. read more
