Yesterday I came in and ordered for the family. I thought it was OK but the price was good so I factored that into ordering again. Today 3/1/15 I go back to do our weekend order and the prices increased!! I wish they gave notice like other places so it's not a surprise! Now my weekend order cost $15 more when I could have just ordered it with my yesterday order if I had known. So irritated at that. Second, I was waiting for 30+ minutes and I'm getting antsy. I figure I'll go outside. I let her know I'll be back and she says oh your order is right there. Ugh!!! I hate that. If a customer is waiting for their order why can't you just tell me it's ready?????!!!! Horrible customer service on top of the normal sandwich for $12-15 now. I won't be back. We came here on a holiday and we actually were going to go to a different place for lunch but because of the crazy rail traffic we couldn't turn left. So instead we turned right and saw this complex with a whole bunch of restaurants and businesses. They have a lot of things in Kapalama Shopping Center. We looked at all the places and saw Machetes Mean Sandwiches. I said ooh let's try there, that's somewhere different. So we all agreed and walked in. We were the only customers in there but the person working greeted us when we walked in. Since it was our first time, I asked what sandwiches are popular. He said the "Meanest" ones were. There weren't kid's sandwiches on the menu so we just got my daughter the turkey sandwich. And my husband and I got something from the meanest menu. He got the turkey avocado bacon and I got the Italian. The person who took our order made our sandwiches. It was pretty fast. We opened the wrap and I was shocked. The bread on these sandwiches is amazing . I've never had such soft thick bread. I'm telling you the bread itself is the whole reason to come to this place. All of us were so quiet eating because we were just enjoying every bit of the sandwich. Everything meshed well with the bread and there was a good ratio of meat in there. I've been coming to this location of Machete's sandwiches for a number of years now. It's in a little mall with Zippy's, Buffalo Wild Wings and a number of other eateries. Parking can be a little challenging if you come during lunch or dinner hours. Other than that shouldn't be a challenge. I guess I'm sort of a creature of habit and always order the same thing once I find something I like. For me it's the turkey, bacon and ranch sandwich which I get on wheat bread. The sandwich is big enough for me to have 2 meals from it. I guess if you are a little bigger eater you can probably take it down in one sitting. If you look closely at the menu there are a few items you can add to your sandwich at no cost. The inside of the restaurant is very minimal, there are 3 tables with some chairs. I don't think I've seen very many people eating in, mostly take out. This is a sandwich shop I always frequent and will continue to go as long as they are around. read more

Went here for lunch one day, because I always wanted to try this place. Sandwiches are one of my favorite foods. Machete's has a good selection of sandwiches to choose from. I ordered the turkey and salami on wheat bread. The bread itself tasted fresh and homemade. It was so soft and fluffy, there's no way they didn't make it themselves. The slices are extra thick, so you need to like bread more than meat. When I ordered, I should've paid more attention to the details of the menu because I wasn't asked if I wanted any of the toppings. The first bite was excellent because I was so impressed with the bread. For the next bite, I wanted to taste the inside of the sandwich, but couldn't. I was dying for a deli sandwich and this cured the craving big time. The other location ran out of bread when we got there, so we made our way to the Kalihi location. I HIGHLY recommend this one just for the available parking spots. Service was quick and friendly. I went for the "Meanest" sandwich...no literally the Italian is one of the meanest on the menu lol!! Filled with Salami, Spicy Capicola, Provolone cheese, Mayo, lettuce, tomato, oregano and no onions for me it's then sandwiched between two thick cut freshly baked bread that's so light and fluffy but holds all the yumminess in perfectly without falling apart or break down under pressure and you get a choice of Homestyle White or Cracked Wheat...trust me you've never had bread for a sandwich like this! This is my favorite sandwich shop. I come here because the bread is so fresh and soft. The bread is thicker than traditional bread and it holds well when they layer in the meat and veggies. I always get the #8 ~ Roast Beef and Turkey sandwich with extra lettuce, extra onion and no tomatoes. I generally take my sandwich to go and buy chips elsewhere if I really want some. They are always quick to take my order and sometimes they are busy with online orders and walk-ins. They are always friendly and make the sandwiches quickly and wrap them in butcher paper. I think that's a great touch. The establishment is tucked away and has a few tables, but is clean. It has a calm atmosphere and easy to chill if you do eat there. You don't feel rushed and I recommend this place for a really great sandwich. read more

The machete was MEAN... the turkey avocado bacon... just "CHETE". ;) With sandwiches, the bread is about 60 percent of the equation for a good or bad sammich. Machete's white bread was pillowy, soft, fluffy, a good amount of "bite". 9/10! But the cracked wheat was dense, hard, cold and dry. 0/10! IDK if this is normal or if they refrigerate it overnight and sell it the next day. The machete sandwich was thicccc!! So much meat! You could almost portion it out into 2-3 sandwiches. The cheese ratio was not high enough (just 1 slice of the 2 flavors). The meat quality wasn't anything to rave about but it was good! The toppings were fresh, appropriately portioned. I asked for extra Italian dressing on the side so my sandwich would not get soggy and they said they can't do that bc they don't have to go containers. Seemed like something that a takeout place should be able to accommodate. The turkey bacon avocado sandwich was the ugly stepsister by far. For just $2 less you get skimped so hard on fillings, you might as well buy 1 machete and byob (bring your own bread) to make a second sandwich. There was barely any turkey or cheese. The bacon was thinnnn and dry. Avocado spread was not real avocado. Major meh all around. I had to add my own extras into the sandwich and toast the bread to make it edible. :( So the highs and lows of my experience translates to a 3 star rating overall. Order the basic sandwich from the menu and you can add from there. The sandwiches are substantial and I usually have enough for lunch the next day! I frequent the Dillingham location pretty regularly. Their Machete sandwich is dah bomb dot com. Meat is always filled so it's hard to get your mouth on it BUT I'm not complaining. Bread is baked fresh daily and is so special. My only gripe is they don't sell their bread anymore. I can just imagine the kind of French toast it would make. If I consume mayo, other ingredients have to be mixed with it for me to enjoy or continue to nom, nom, nom. I always pass by this place whenever I'm around the area for Tea Time or Ahi & Vegetable. My boyfriend told me it was really good a couple of times, so I decided to try it out after a dentist appointment before my next class. It's located in the back in between Dairyu Ramen & Curry and Elvin's Bakery at the Kapalama Shopping Center. Lots of parking, but the lot can get crowded, making the drive really narrow, during the lunch and after work rush hours. I went in without really knowing what I wanted as I stared at the menu. The menu was priced as 'Mean' ($8), 'Meaner' ($9), 'Meanest' ($10), and the Matchete ($12.50). So I asked the worker what was popular. She recommended the turkey avocado bacon (Meanest) sandwich (turkey, avocado spread, thick-sliced bacon, lettuce, tomatoes and mayo) with either their homestyle white or cracked wheat bread. I ordered that with their homestyle white. As I mentioned earlier, I had just come from the dentist office... and half of my face was numb. I took a bite but could barely taste anything due to my half numbed mouth. But on the side I could still taste, the sandwich tasted good! The bread was soft and dense with a very small tinge of sweetness. I didn't really care for the bacon but did really like the avocado spread. I decided to save the other half for when my face went back to normal, so I left it in the fridge for a few hours. Surprisingly, the sandwich was exactly the same except cold. I ordered the Turkey, Avocado, and Bacon sandwich whereas my partner ordered the Roast Beef and Ham sandwich. They both tasted pretty good too (not as salty as a Subway sandwich, in my opinion). To be honest, I was not a fan of the prices but when I opened the packages our sandwiches were packed in, I was absolutely amazed at the size! I swear the slices of breads were twice the size of my hand. The Kalihi location doesn't have many tables to dine in, so I do suggest take out. We live about 10 min away, and the sandwiches were not soggy. Service was also very nice. They completed our order very quickly even when we told them to take their time.
