One of my favorite grocery stores. I can always count on great cakes, new items and low prices. My favorite part is the bakery. They can make a cake out of any picture you give them. The service is reliable and fast. You do have to give a 24-48 hour notice for cakes. There is a hot food bar, seafood bar and catering. Everything is well organized and easy to find. It does have peak hours where it's packed between 1-5 on weekends. I come before 11 or after 6. The parking lot is huge you won't have worrying about finding parking. I appreciate the convenience of how close this grocery store is to my neighborhood, the big parking lot, the price points and how they have hatch green chile (local New Mexican here lol) - but ultimately I don't like shopping here. It's very loud, and the aisles are always crowded with either overstock or people. I don't like that the check out lanes are too skinny to fit both your cart and your self through at the same time. The baggers also only work for tips, which is inconvenient considering I already have to pay for groceries too. But I really like their self check out section! It has lots of space and is easy to operate. The staff are always very nice too! read more

Costumer Service!!!!! NEX commissary Self service! We always shop on this commissary but never in my life I got treated so poorly. First of all we went to the self check out machine to scan our groceries. One lady followed us (Mhel) and ask if we have military ID very rudely so we showed her then we continue with our business ignoring how rude she's treating us. then when we were about to pay our groceries she came out of nowhere and ask again about our military ID so we got a little irritated and pointed out that we showed it already to her but she still keep continuing to bother us i dont know if she's just power tripping us but man she's super rude and no respect to people at all we felt humiliated on how she treated us we noticed that we were the only ones she followed and ask rudely about the military ID. The way she spoke made us feel like we don't belong on that store and singled out. Never in my life have I been treated so disrespectful and low, especially here in Hawaii. Love the commissary prices for fresh produce and prepackaged items. Meats are hit or miss on deals. Managers special meat is the only one I have seen that is cheaper than outside stores. But there are a lot of other deals that make up for it. Workers are friendly and helpful. Just know that if you can't find it there, check back later or they don't have it. The check out process is easy and they always have baggers to help you get your items to your car. *as of 7/22/23- they are not checking IDs at the door. The NEX Commissary is pretty well stocked. The food selection that they carry is pretty good. The prices of their products are very reasonable and somewhat cheaper than local super markets. Lots of groceries with lots of variety! Always happy with their produce selection, and the staff at the fish counter are so friendly and helpful. It can get very busy and a bit frenetic so plan accordingly. Very happy since they've increased their capacity for self check out when getting just a few items it really speeds things along. Ok five stars why! The commissary is a military benefit for our essential forces, their families and us retires. Great selection of products availability is not always consistent but prices are great!!! They have a great selection of products. I rely and use this benefit to the maximum as it saves us considerable. For those whom complain go to Safeway or Foodland or quite complaining. I'm retired Vietnam vet and have been relying on the commissary system for over 50 years. I was able to use them in all four corners of the world and this one is one of the best!! read more

Shopping with mom in Honolulu, Hawaii... Since my father retired from Military Service, my mom gets lifetime military benefits. One of the many benefits is the privilege to shop at The Commissary. The Commissary is the grocery store next to the Navy Exchange at Pearl Harbor. It has almost everything that you'd need: fresh produce, canned goods, frozen foods, baked items, a meat department, etc. They also have local items like macadamia nuts, guava juice, and taro chips. On this trip, mom bought bananas, Clementines, cereal, a pineapple, stewed tomatoes, and Propel water. LOL! The good things are that mom doesn't pay tax and the bags are free. Parking is free, too (mom likes to park in aisle 6)! Service is polite and the environment is clean, well lit, and safe. There are ID checks at the door, so, don't forget your wallet! read more

Used to work at this commissary it was awful. There was too much drama. People are really rude and fake but not everybody. There is that like that though there are people there who are really nice and very kind and just doesn't wanna deal with drama and just want to go to work and go home, but almost a year ago I left Pearl Harbor Commissary to go to Hickam Commissary because it was too stressful dealing with the drama most people there just likes drama. Great prices, but beware of the constant expired items in the fridges. Freezers don't work most of the time so everything has melted and refrozen multiple times. Had to throw away multiple loaves of bread because there will be water inside the bag soaking the loaf. Produce often has bugs or is being sold rotten. Have had to take a ton of items to the front for years to show the manager the expiration date that was 1 month+ ago. Started getting most things like produce, bread, or refrigerated/frozen items from Costco to stop wasting so much money. read more

Produce is usually close to expiration and the workers are fairly rude. I was scanning a papaya and a younger female who was watching me like a hawk came over and must have been on a power trip because she took the papaya and said "this isn't a papaya. This is a papaya BIG." And then grabbed it out of the bag and swiped her ID and told me to weigh it again. (There was no sticker or any type of indicator on the papaya) Idk it's an honest mistake. This is is the larges commissary / NEX store we have in the world. I love shopping here, because I can find everything that I need. It take me awhile to shop here, because the store is so large. And because They move things around in the store on a regular basis to keep it interesting and drive me crazy, LOL. i can find things here that I missing missing the mainland and save a few dollars then if I shopped In town. They have a large section of fruits and vegetables, meat and poultry, Latin/Asian/Jewish/ / local foods and even vegetarian goods. This commissary is huge. They have about 20 cashiers and about four quick check out stands. Everyone thatI run into that works at the commissary is very friendly and helpful. Because everything is shipped, they do run out of the specialty and favorites. if you have a favorite or two it's best to stock up on them. They except coupons and then they have a coupon card program that you need to download your coupons on via Internet before shopping. Sometimes they'll have coupons in the aisles of the store as well. At the entrance into the commissary, you will find the store's magazine with the specials for the month. You have to have a military ID to come into the store. In the Commissary you cannot bring in guest or family that do not have a military I The commissary is busy on a day today basis, but Be aware on Pay days, holidays and fleek week it's crazy busy. After you're finished your grocery shopping and now your too tired to go home and cook. You can go to the food trucks outside or the food court upstairs and have a bit to eat. Please note: Before leaving your car in the parking lot, look up and notice which fruit you've parked under and look down to see what Number is the rows you've parked in. Looking for your car in 90° weather is not a cute look. I see many people out in the parking lot looking lost,I used to be one of them, until someone gave me this tip. Who would've Thunk it?? This place is going worse and worse. I've been shopping there, going 20 years now as active duty and retiree. They have nothing ready left most of the time, but they are going to blame it on the supply chain. Every week, they raise the cost of damn near everything in the store and blame it on the suppliers. Then what went my ass last night was when I scanned my military ID? It was accepted, then a young lady ran over and said wait I approved it as veterans, not military. We would have charged you more. Why and what are they charging these veteran more for? Was this the deal they worked out with the government to let veteran shop there. I mean, every pays there dumb surcharge, that a tax but not a tax go to fixing old Commissary or building new one. Yes, you screw people over, jacking up the cost of items, and find out you charge more to people with veteran IDs. Just show how money hungry, worthless,.they are treating vets like that. Who know us retirees are probably the next one that they will up charge. Hell, most veterans can't afford to shop there as it is. read more

This is the commissary you want to avoid on payday/payday weekends! Went on a Saturday afternoon following a payday Friday, and the line stretched around ice cream aisle, through cheese/butter/yogurt, and into the milk aisle. That being said, the Pearl Harbor commissary is the biggest on the island, carries the biggest variety of goods, is co-located with the Navy Exchange (which is the biggest NEX in the world), and guests accompanied with a sponsor is not an issue. In addition to the regular check out lanes, they have Express and self-serve check out lanes. Be mindful of paydays (especially the 1st of the month when retirees are paid), and you will get a lot done at one stop! Repeat and recommend with one big caveat! read more

I love shopping here. They got more and better choices of vegetables and fruits compared to other commissaries here and abroad. I can come here and shop for all the ingredients for pinakbet. They got poke bar with huge selection of pokes. I noticed their mussels poke are larger and fresher here. This store also closes later than the typical 8pm closing of most commissaries. I just wish during rush hours, most of the check out lanes would open which will mitigate longs lines. I like that there's checkout lanes for up to 30 items and more than 30 items, I just hope that's there's at least 3 or 4 staff running these lanes. It gets back up sometimes especially when you need clerk assistance to clear the error. It is far from my place, but it is worth the drive. Parking gets crazy busy sometimes but tolerable. This is the only commissary located off base and they allow guests inside with those who have proper military/DoD ID's. Guests cannot make any purchases but are allowed to shop with sponsor. This commissary is the largest on the island and they have everything you could possibly think of for groceries! I always see new products here that I never see off base in regular grocery stores. It gets very busy here around the first and 15th, which are paydays, and around any holiday. The check out line can get very long but moves fairly quick. Don't forget there are self check out/express lanes near the front and you do not have to stand in the regular line. It's very common to see shoppers with FULL grocery carts as the prices are deeply discounted for the most part. I usually stock up here once a month for my grocery shopping needs. The only gripe with the commissary I have is make sure you check your expiration dates! They are not good at rotating items or removing expired items. With the high volume of product and shoppers I can deal with it. read more

The commissary is awesome especially for military members past and present. The problem that I see is when guests comes in and take more what's needed. I think multiple items of the same merchandise in a cart that is overflowing, with other guests following each other around is not helping. Shelves are empty of some of the merchandise I need! Don't plan on going to this commissary if you're bringing your family there. I've been in the Army for 18 years, and this place is the first to tell me that I could only bring in two guests. The man checking IDs at the front door was extremely rude to our family. A very nice lady behind us said she would escort our family in with her ID, only to have the guy at the door tell her in a very condescending tone "You need to understand that you must be with them at all times at the store. Can you handle that?" Thoroughly embarrassed, my sister said she, my brother-in-law, and their 3 month old baby that they'd just wait outside in July heat while the rest of us shopped for supplies for our family dinners. This is where the military shops for their groceries. We tagged along as guests of our military wife friend. We were required to show driver's licenses. The prices here are very good. They had a lot of low prices coffees and we took advantage, buying several as gifts and a couple for ourselves to bring home. Our friend told us that the lowest price she'd seen for macadamia nuts was here, so we stocked up on these. They had a good variety. They even had Honey and Sriracha, which I've never seen before. Outside of the Commissary, there is a Rita's Italian Ice, BBQ, Shave Ice and Greek food stands. This was our stop for well priced gifts. read more

It's definitely a privilege to shop here, just make sure you have enough bags and space in your car! I usually don't shop at both the NEX and commissary at the same time but it is most definitely convenient to get all your basic needs and food all in one shopping swoop! This commissary location seems much more bigger and spacier than the Schofield location that's for sure. Be sure to remember where you parked too! Major tip: I would suggest eating at the food court before shopping. Who has the energy to cook after grocery shopping, surely not me. I'll usually pick up a bite to eat prior to shopping and eat leftovers at home. It also saves me $$$$! Grocery shopping when you are hungry is not the brightest idea. First stop after touchdown Honolulu December 30, 2015 This commissary is located at the Navy Exchange Mall at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu. Soon after we landed in Oahu and got our rental vans squared away my family and I headed here. There were 13 of us in our party and will not be able to afford the expenses of eating out everyday for the next seven days so we purchased our groceries, sundries and everything else we could think of at the commissary. Unfortunately for the rest of us only my niece (US Army) and sister-in-law (my late brother was in the US Army) were the only ones able to get in. Guests were not allowed inside. While waiting this gave us a chance to discover the other food vendors around (Pop Pop Donuts and Bee's Boba Express). There was a food court upstairs between the Navy Exchange and the Commissary where some 15 or so local food vendors were open to the public. The parking lot is huge! Plenty of parking for everyone! The Commissary "supposedly" is much cheaper than the prices we see at Safeway and Foodland. This is true for the most part. However, our family made a complete shopping list for our Thanksgiving feast and we compared it to Walmarts prices and out of all 23 items listed, only 3 were cheaper at the commissary! I was shocked! My daughter ordered the food on line and they had it all waiting for pickup. Please don't assume the Commissary is cheaper, I suggest you start checking out stores on the economy if you wish to save some money. It is true that most cereal is cheaper and often veggies, but you can go to your outdoor markets and pick up some great fresh produce at sometimes much lower prices. I've been here 34 years. Military Retired. I know what I'm talking about. Get out, smell the fresh air and get to know the community you live in. The fresh air will do you some good. Rarely come here to shop because I find Don Quiote in Pearl City a little more appealing. Yes you can save a little bit of money coming here, but it really all depends on what you are looking for as when sales come out in other local non-military markets, it can be cheaper than it is here. Plus, sometimes the crowds and parking can be somewhat frustrating. Cereal, some produce, dairy product, and frozen stuff is usually cheaper here, but meats can as expensive as it is outside. It was better when they had a no guest policy, as it prevented the shelves from being cleaned out by some of the abusers. But since I was at the exchange, we figured, why not. Got a few items, nothing really exciting, but since it was a sunday night, it wasn't too crowded and we got out of there pretty quickly. read more

Lord have mercy! The panini sandwiches that come out of this deli are straight ridiculous! Listen fam - I hit this place about twice a week to get a sandwich for good reason! These things weigh as much as a newborn, and they are DELICIOUS! Not only are the sandwiches great, but the ladies the work behind the counter are topnotch! This is one of my favorite lunchtime spots for sure. For a real treat, take your big sandwich to the point near Hickam Beach and enjoy the shade, the waves, and your big sammy! read more

One of the only commissary's that I know of that is located off base. It is right by Pearl Harbor hickam, which makes it the perfect location for soldiers, but at the same time perfect for those of us that do not live on base! We all know it is a nightmare to get on base at certain times, so this makes it convenient! This commissary is pretty large compared to others and is stocked with many different items. They make it a point to carry locally made products and will sometimes even have demos in store. They carry locally grown produce as well, which is really nice! Their meats go bad pretty quick, so we try not to buy meats from here unless we plan on cooking it the same day. Their prices cannot be beat and there is no tax! The lines can get a little crazy and I've seen it wrap around the store. Quick tip, come with family so they can wait in line and you can shop. By the time they get to the front you will be completely done with your shopping. You are allowed to bring in 2 guests that are not military with you now. Before they were strict and allowed no guests into the commissary at all! Also make sure that you bring cash tip for the baggers. They don't get paid and are paid solely on tips alone. Make note to tell them prior to bagging if you need help out or not. If you don't they'll assume they're coming with you to your car and they will load the bags on their carts. They now accept military star cards as well as forms of payment! read more

Some cashiers are rude but most workers are kind. Customers themselves can be pretty nasty but that's at most military establishments; I've noticed. My issue is the quality control. Produce is often hit or miss, regularly see molded stuff on the shelves, expired food still being sold, expired coupons displayed and I've often purchased bug invested food that spread throughout the pantry when I don't notice. Now this is a sub sandwich! I know everyone can't go into this commissary on Pearl Harbor however, if you can you have to go to the deli and have to have them make you a made to order sandwich. I am so sorry but I forgot the deli manager's name but, she was so nice and literally made your sandwich care. I had a vegetarian and it was delish! They aren't on salary and make their living entirely off of the tips they receive! I don't think most customers are intentionally screwing these people over, I truly believe they are unaware that they work for tip only! I spoke to one of the baggers and a cashier and said - There should be big signs posted as you come in and also visible while you're standing in line! They pointed out the sign visible just before you exit the building! A little late by then! Maybe what they need is to go on strike for a week - right around payday - let customers bag their own groceries a couple of times! COVID would be the ideal excuse! The commissary itself is great and they have a lot of option but it's quite annoying when people think they deserve tip..... For doing their job. By law the lowest an employee with tips can make is $1 less than minimum wage which is $12/hours. So if you're making $11 to bag my groceries and expect a tip you should find a better job. Idk who it was but I gave them $1 for 3 bags. I worked restaurant industry for years as a server. It's not hard to bag groceries. She showed her dollar to her friend on the side and it took everything in me not to take the tip back. The baggers are always rude and feel entitled to tips for doing their job. Workers at Pearl Harbor commissary are rude. Seems to me a lot of them are filipino ladies with that attitude problem. Don't like your job then get out. I especially don't like that the workers who are not dependents or military affiliated can shop at the commissary and NEX. This should be a privilege for only qualified military. read more
