This is a reminder that the food can be excellent, but service is king. I came here with my mother for Mother's Day brunch this past Sunday at 11am. It was literally the only place I could find on short notice with reservation slots available, which maybe should have been a sign (and certainly a reminder to me to be much more proactive about this sort of thing in the future). This was sort of a meet in the middle for us; she's in Redding, CT, and I'm in North Jersey. Common Grounds is located at the end of a strip mall, though arguably a higher-end one. The parking lot was VERY busy and while spots were relatively easy to find, I had to settle for one further away close to the bowling alley next door. All good though in that regard. The first hint that this was going to go downhill happened almost immediately. Despite having made the reservation for 11, our designated table wasn't available for seating because the prior party was "lingering." There wasn't a time limit on the dining parties so it seemed like Common Grounds just made assumptions on when people would leave, which is probably not an exact science on the best of days, and certainly not on a day where you might have a family reunion element. We were offered a large high-top table to sit at instead, which my mother isn't comfortable with, and after a few minutes of sitting there, were instructed to take a "normal" table by the window. I will give props for the hostess reading the room in that regard and doing what she could to give us an optimal seating situation - the wait and miscalculation wasn't her fault. She was also very nice to my mother, which for sure counts for something. It took probably 15 minutes for our waitress to come by and ask for drink/food orders, which isn't great. I'd decided on the Blueberry Lemon Ricotta Pancakes from the Specials menu, only to be told by the waitress that they were no longer available. I then had to quickly pivot to the French Toast from the regular menu, but lack of availability is something that should have been mentioned when we received the menus, not while we're ordering. And it wasn't even noon - a little concerning. I don't know if it was just a bad day behind the scenes, but it took over 45 minutes to get two pretty simple brunch entrees to us, and almost as much time to get our beverages. That would at least be understandable if the place was packed and everyone was busy, but that wasn't the case - a lot of tables emptied up within 20 minutes of our arrival, and in a pretty troubling optic, most of the front-end waitstaff was literally just standing around by the coffee station not doing anything. That's bad management, and could have helped alleviate whatever was happening in the kitchen. You have five minutes to kill? Okay, stop by your tables and apologize for the delay. Help bus and turn over the recently vacated tables. Maybe refill my water glass, which was empty for most of my meal. There's just no excuse for that. And it's a shame because my Cardamon Rose Latte was excellent, and the French Toast was very good as well. French Toast isn't one of my go-to's, but when I have it I prefer it to be softer and not as cumbersome, and this fit the bill. But because the wait time and overall service was mediocre at best, I didn't even want to go near a dessert menu or consider having a second latte - that probably would have tacked on another hour. So by virtue of not being attentive and efficient, Common Grounds left money on the table. A real shame; and frankly, surprising to me given that this has to be a very notable day on the calendar for brunch places. I'd ensure everything was well-oiled and ready to go, and it's clear it just wasn't. I overheard quite a few people outside singing the praises of this place, and I saw enough to probably understand why. But we weren't the beneficiary of most of those qualities. read more

This was a great find near the Orangetheory gym at the mall. It's about a 4-minute drive away, and they provide ample parking right out front. The inside is pretty spacious, with some tables reserved for table service, and some patio seating as well. I ordered at the counter & mistakenly sat at a reserved table but no one redirected me so I just went with it. I asked the cashier for suggestions on which coffee to order since they had some fun-sounding options. Deciding between the French Toast Latte and the Banana Bread Latte, I went with the latter more unique bevvie. It came out looking primo, and it was also hot hot hot. However, I didn't get any hints of banana, so that was a bummer. It was a good latte, though. Not too milky and good coffee flavor. The lox and bagel was very good as well, although I wish the bagel had been more toasted -- it was pretty chewy, which isn't my favorite. But the ingredients were fresh and well-proportioned with a very generous amount of smoked salmon. It was overall a pleasant experience, and I would stop here again to try other items on the menu. read more

This was due to what I am assuming in the current vibe for spaces like this-all high ceilings, nothing to absorb the sound etc. but everything else was so great I will give them a pass on the noise. Let's start with ambiance. The acoustics are horrible. You can hardly hear the person sitting next to you. The service is slow in taking an order and bringing the food, this is at mid morning. The food is tasty, but the coffee is better at MacDonalds. My lox and bagel would have tasted much better if they had gotten the bagel from JV Bagels in Jefferson Valley instead of a prepackaged bagel. And last , but not least, the bill is brought to you on an electronic gadget with a service fee already included in the total for using a credit card, which we were not using. We finally stopped in for breakfast today. It's hard to find a restaurant up this way that has any vegan choices but Common Grounds has several! We ordered coffee, of course, and the Tofu Scramble with potatoes on the side. The tofu scramble was served with avocado and black beans and toast. Everything was perfectly seasoned and delicious. I want to start by saying I've always enjoyed my experiences at Common Grounds and have been a returning customer because of it. However, I feel compelled to share that our Mother's Day visit was far from ideal. We had a 12pm reservation and checked in on time, only to be told our table was being cleaned and would be ready shortly. Over the next 45 minutes, we were repeatedly asked what we were waiting for, even after clearly stating multiple times that we had a noon reservation. When we were finally seated at 12:45, our table was missing a chair, which took another 15 minutes to resolve (we eventually borrowed one ourselves). We placed our order shortly after being seated, understanding that the kitchen might be busy. However, our food, basic items like French toast and eggs took an hour and a half to arrive, and when it did, it was incorrectly prepared. I don't typically write reviews, but this experience was disappointing, especially for a day meant to feel special. It might have helped to pause walk-ins, simplify the menu, or better honor the advertised seating times. I hope this feedback helps improve future service during high-volume days. read more

First visit was a Sunday where they had live music which was a little loud, but you have to like the fact as a business they are trying to do best to add to the ambiance on a slower afternoon. I ordered an Ice Tea and it was fresh and amazing. Second time was today a Friday morning and I had to work remotely for an hour. The internet was strong ambiance and staff were perfect. I love literally walking distance of this place and many friends had said I had to try. I'm usually so crazed on weekends that I hadn't had a chance until last week when I was meeting with a friend from out of town and another was staying at my house so I said let's try it. I looked it up Yelp said open until 5p on Sundays which was perfect because my friend was arriving at 2:30p and then we headed over. Got there and seated about 2:40, and the server came over a very cute young lady and said, the kitchen closed in 5 minutes. Yikes wish I would have seen that before arriving as we were starving but had barely sat down with the menus she was handing us. She stood over us which was intimidating and I guess she realized and said she would be back in 5. So we quickly made our decision. She took our orders and came back 10 mins later and said they were out of lettuce so my salad and my friends wrap couldn't be ordered. My friend was fine without lettuce in her wrap, I however was left scrambling under pressure for an alternative lol long story short they quickly made up for the lack of lettuce and made our orders. The drinks were super yummy. My margarita was on point. We enjoyed ourselves after the marathon ordering. Our server was super sweet and we enjoyed our time. Normally I don't complain about this but the live band needs to turn down the volume a bit when the place is not full lol the space is cozy but having to yell across the table isn't fun although the musics was really good. read more

A hidden gem! My friend got the smoked turkey and cheese on sourdough that I tried and it was so flavorful - the homemade aioli was tasty! My eggs Benedict is new on the menu and I'm so happy I was able to try it. So much flavor and came with the perfect amount of lox to portion out the meal. 4 stars because it took a little time to get our food, but we also came at a prime brunch hour. We had the Ham and Swiss croissant...so buttery... so flaky, as good as I've had in Paris! I really want to give this place 4 stars, but it's changed quite a bit since the owner stopped coming on the weekends. The chef is the same, and the food gets 5 stars. The staff just doesn't seem able to keep up with the pace and we have decided to stop going because the wait for your food could literally be 40 minutes. When you're there with children, that's a problem. And when they don't get your order right, there is no expedited service. You could wait another 20-30 minutes for something they forgot to put in or misheard. I was originally ecstatic about this place, but it may have gotten too popular too quickly and so the service has been really compromised. Hope they get a 2nd amazing chef to help get those food orders out quicker. read more
