My 17 year old had an eye procedure with Dr Monroe today. This practice is full of wonderful people with top notch customer service! Everyone from the door to the surgery room is so pleasant. I wish they were specialist so we could experience this every eye appointment. Today her procedure went well. Fast and informative. I stayed in the room during for support as she is 16 and they let her know what to expect in a detailed way she could understand but also kept her informed in the room. Overall I would go to them for anything with my eyes or my children. Highly suggest you looking them up for a specialist. read more

While initially apprehensive about the doctor with whom I would be scheduled, my sense of urgency drove me to seek medical attention. Dr. Hobbs not only met my expectations, but exceeded them with his friendliness, kindness, professionalism, and informative approach to my care. In fact, during my visit, he drew my attention to a potential contributing factor that I had overlooked, thereby improving the quality and efficacy of my treatment. I am delighted to have trusted Dr. Hobbs with my care, as he has proven himself to be a valuable addition to the select group of professionals to whom I entrust my health. However, my experience with the administrative support staff of the practice has been mixed. The scheduling process can sometimes be challenging, with miscommunications and hiccups occasionally leading to confusion, such as attempts to schedule me with specific doctors even in situations of emergency. Furnishing a range of services within the practice is commendable, but there is room for improvement in ensuring that patients do not inadvertently 'slip through the cracks' and receive services at alternative locations that could have been provided by the practice. Consequently, this approach can negatively impact the practice's bottom line and impair its wider exposure to new patients. For instance, I was not informed that a procedure I underwent was available at the practice and instead had it performed elsewhere. Several months later, I was contacted to schedule a follow-up that I was initially told was not feasible at the practice. Let me start by saying my experience at this facility has been amazing. However I ran into an issue today which is very sad to say the least. I have glaucoma and one of my drops would not dispense from the container. I called the office to speak with the on call doctor which I thought was the right thing to do. I had the unpleasant experience of speaking with Dr. Flowers she informed me that my request for a refill was not an emergency and she was really nonchalant about the whole situation. I was told to be sure and use the drops everyday to ensure my eye pressure stays low. I've had one issue in the past in which was out of town left prescription at home and the on call doctor had no problem calling in a refill. Dr. Flowers told me its no big deal we only deal with emergencies on the weekend and this did not qualify as an emergency. read more

Never in my life have I ever been profiled like this! I've always heard from people in my community, Drs are all about money! They don't really care about you. In my line of work I almost always took the Dr's side! But today I was a victim to bullying and racial discrimination. Let's set it up. Back in June I came in had great and professional service from Dr Munro. I had some eye swelling and he told me I needed a procedure done. The procedure went well and he informed me to come back so he could take a look at the right eye. That leads me to today! I went back for a visit today to get me right eye looked at. I walked in and the receptionist told me it'll be a $100 out of pocket expense! That made me question her being the last 2 times I was there this year I was charged a $50 office visit fee (high deductible plan) I questioned her on why I was being charged $100 today vs $50 the last previous visits. She informed me that's the fee for a procedure!!! Now I'm just walking in, hadn't been seen by anyone I'm wearing shades so no one has seen my eye. She informed me the money was not for her it's was for the Dr's office. I immediately asked to speak to the office/billing manager. Here comes Tammy Jones (practice administrator) we went into her office and from the very 1st tone in her voice I knew this wasn't going to go well! I informed her of the above amounts and she was immediately taken aback! She went on attack do you want it or not do you want to be seen or not. You can go somewhere else! WOAH! I informed this medical is what I do! If a patient comes in for an office visit and it turns into something else then that's what you bill! You can't charge a patient for something that may or may not happen! My eye may not even be at the state for a procedure, the may just give me medication! Why are you charging me for something that hasn't even been done. No DX codes No procedures codes for today's visit! Just a blanket charge! She went through the roof! She couldn't take being challenged! She began to point at me told me to get out! (Side note. If I would have spoken to her that way 6'5 350lb Black man I'd be locked up! Especially in this particular climate. One call to the police!) Upon leaving I saw a black lady sitting in the waiting room and I advised her of my feeling! This was a ANTI BLACK PERSON THAT KNOWS WHAT THEYRE TALKING ABOHT ATTACK! aka Racist! I went around to the other building where I'd had my previous visit and wanted to get a 1500 of my last visit! I spoke to a receptionist and here comes Tammy from the other building to see what I was up to (she was qued buy the "check out rep") the receptionist spoke with a very nice person in an office to get the form. When I saw Tammy go in her office and shut the door I asked if I could speak with her directly. The receptionist walked me over.. entering her office Tammy's standing OVER ME with her hands on her hips! (I'm seated) I asked her if I could speak privately and the Lady said it was fine! I got a copy of my form .. CPT 67800 Modifier LT with description of services from 6-9 office visit! Just like I said.. the office visit led to something else! And it was billed correctly! I came across very nice people here! But I can never be put in a position to possibly be treated as an ignorant negro being put in my place! It's not worth it! My appt was at 1pm w Dr Monroe. 45 mins later I asked where he was and his assistant said he took a late lunch. As a business owner if I had an appointment and was running late Id eat popcorn. When he came in he said that (late lunch) was not true and could I tell him why I was there. I said well you read the notes from your assistant Ill defer to you. He said NO I want to hear from you. I said no I trust you, Lets discuss the notes. AKA he did not read the notes. From there things got worse. He was not only very late but also rude and condescending using phrases like "Im trying to explain that to you" Angry, tardy and hubris, unfortunate. Choose another provider. read more

Cataract surgery. Optometrist recommended dr flowers since they were all the same but she had a good bedside manner. I tried to search doctors online but all the best didn't do cataract surgery, so I went with dr Kyte's suggestion. Everyone at the office was pleasant, but the doctor spoke quickly which makes it difficult to get the facts. We decided on mid-priced lens which was not covered by my insurance (and very expensive - total of about $1700 extra.) She assured me the cataract eye would be better than my other eye after surgery. Day of surgery I never saw dr flowers, the surgeon. In fact, never saw dr flowers after initial consult. They have a different doctor check you out. Never saw well after surgery but they just sent me back to optometrist. I had an infection in the eye. Had to go back on eye drops. Finally, the eye was good enough to get a new prescription. But the eye isn't even as good as it was before the cataract. Dr Kyte says he has no responsibility for this - I should be grateful for no cataract (some cake & icing analogy); I need to contact commonwealth eye for any complaints. Even though i knew I'd get no satisfaction, I called them, told them I was dissatisfied. They said the eye saw 20/20 after surgery. That is absolutely untrue. In reality they said the eye was correctable to 20/20 with glasses after surgery. I am so upset. This cost so much money. I got a poor result. The other eye will eventually need cataract surgery and that scares me. But I will not be under the care of dr flowers (nor dr Kyte.) read more

I had cataract surgery performed by Dr. Michael. He was ever so nice when we came for our first consultation. I was so happy to have chosen such a concerned and nice surgeon for my eyes. Well the joke was on me! He turned out to be rude, nonchalant and could have cared less about me or any first eye surgery problems that I was experiencing. He was such a fake. I ended up with eye infections, painful eyes and blurred vision. A complete disaster. When having awful problems and frankly scared to death about my eyes, I called and was told after the surgery it was no longer their responsibility, that I needed to go back to the eye Dr. that referred me!! My eye Dr. said that was incorrect, she said that Dr. Michael's group were responsible for any problems that I was experiencing from the surgery. The entire experience was an overwhelming disaster and a major disappointment! read more

Sadly, I can't leave a Zero star review, so one star it is. My husband saw Dr. Michael for a consultation before cataract surgery. Correct me if I'm wrong, but a consult is intended to answer any questions that a patient may have, determine the best course of action and recommend a treatment plan. The first strike was being told to check in from the car, then, once granted admission to the office, he was forced to wait in the waiting room for over 30 minutes with other patients. So what was the point of waiting in the car again??? Next, he was shown a video about cataracts and the procedure. Okay, fine. Then his eyes were dilated and he had an exam and the Doctor was less than interactive, spitting out readings to the assistant like a machine gun. Then the consult. The Doctor spoke in circles and flat refused to answer questions. When my husband asked how the surgery was done, the doctor said, we've already discussed that. When asked if they would be using stitches, or when stitches might be used, the answer was noncommittal and vague. When asked how they keep the patient from blinking during the procedure, the answer was, "that's my problem, not yours." Then Dr. Michael said that if my husband wanted more technical information on the procedure and how it was done, he should go home and watch some videos, then come back for another consultation! Strike two. Then they ushered my husband to the door, never offering him dark glasses or asking if he had a way to protect his dilated eyes from the bright sunshine, or if he was driving himself. Strike three. The feeling was, if you blindly accept that doctors are like gods and don't want to know what is being done to your eyes, just give them your money and all is well. But if you want a doctor who will include you in the treatment process, take the time and care to explain to you what will happen and help you make informed decisions, go somewhere else. Find another practitioner for your cataract surgery. I had 2 separate issues after cataract surgery and the optometrists I saw at this office to address them were both wrong. This resulted in intense pain, light sensitivity, excess watering of my eyes and blurry vision. I saw a third optometrist who was not dismissive and listened carefully to my symptoms and I'm on a treatment plan that seems to be helping. read more

So I'm pretty sure what I experienced today was one of the top 5 most traumatic experiences of my life. I needed to get a Stye removed from my eye and I was referred here by an optometrist. The optometrist explained that I would just be getting a shot to the eyelid to dissolve the stem over time. Flash forward to today and I was told that I would need to have my inner eyelid sliced open and scraped out. I'm a trooper, so I'm like sure, no problem. FF to surgery and I get stuck 5 times rapidly to apply the numbing agent. "Bee sting" my ass! (Lol). Recently, I have come across quite a few medical surface numbing sprays to get the area slightly numb for the needle that actually has to apply the primary numbing agent. This place should definitely invest in that stuff. Here is where I got ticked off. I'm used to have a 2-5min wait time for the numbing agent to actually affect the entire area. No. The doctor immediately flips my eyelid over and proceeds to cut and scrape while I can feel EVERYTHING. The bottom half of my body was literally jumping out of the chair. I asked for a second to gather myself and was told that it would all be over in a few minutes. My eye started to numb towards the end of the scraping. The experience was lasered into my brain though. I was sent on my way with no aftercare instructions, and a slight headache. No way I'd ever put myself through that again. Just find a different office if you need eye surgery. Pros: The rest of the staff was really nice. The place is very clean. I was called back pretty quickly. Never having to come back again. UPDATE: Dropping this to a 1-star review. My wife called up to the office because she was skeptical of them not giving me any aftercare instructions. We find out that there are substantial aftercare measures that need to be taken, and a prescription ointment that needs to be applied. WTF. This place should be ashamed. read more

I'm writing this review as I sit in a room of Commonwealth Eye Center. I apologize in advance on my typing because my eyes are dilated! This place USED to be good when they were located in Short Pump. They moved to a new and bigger location but unfortunately bigger does not mean better...I guess in this instance it means busier. I've been here for almost 2 hours. Last year's visit was easy and I was looking forward to this year's visit. But after today, I'm never coming back. This office looks like an Apple Store. Has enough staff like an Apple store. My dr assistant was friendly but reminded me of an Apple tech ready to help me, dressed in a T-shirt and jeans. What the heck is going on? This is still a medical office! And all the nurses congregated at a nurse's station and chatted about "the differences of being in your 20s and 30s." All the while, I just want to know where the doctor is. Im still waiting...going on 2hours and yes, I am counting!!! Im never coming back here until these reviews get better. read more

Just had cataract surgery on both eyes recently with this practice. Dr. Michael was completely incompetent as a surgeon. Had the left eye surgery first, that was basically okay. They sedated me properly. The right eye was done 8 days later. The right eye was terrible, first they didn't sedate me the same as the left eye. I was more present in the left eye surgery. Which means that I felt more discomfort during the surgery. I had to deal with feeling more pain and the light was very intense so I had to receive more instruction during the surgery. Michael caused more swelling by not sedating me properly. I moved around and felt a lot more discomfort. Then the next day at my follow up, the doctor was dismissive and rude to me. He even walked out the examination room while I was talking to him. His assistant even looked shocked at his behavior. I would recommend you not use the services of this practice. They all seem incredibly incompetent and not friendly to their clients. Do not use this practice. Fully incompetent people !!! read more

Run, don't walk, away from this practice. When Dr. Michael met with me, he did not shut up the entire time. I was unable to express my concerns as to whether or not the cataract surgery would impact my LASIK surgery or anything else for that matter. The morning of the surgery, Dr. Michael asked me what my prescription was. I should have stopped him then. Why on earth would a surgeon cutting into your eye ask that question then? Or ever?! When I went for my follow- up the next day Dr. Noble saw me. I told him the vision wasn't right and he insisted it would get better in time. It did not. Dr. Michael did better with the left eye, but as a result of the cataract surgery, I have halos, and I can't drive at night. When I flipped out about it 3 months later, Dr. Noble assured me, they would fix it. They came up with a plan which I followed. I saw my regular practitioner for months to establish that my vision was stabilized and then I was sent to see Dr.Iuorno who had no idea why I was even there. He was rude, condescending and dismissive. He told me to go get more LASIK from my original LASIK doctor - not someone in their practice. I went to this practice for the surgery because my eye practitioner told me if I went somewhere else, I couldn't get follow-up care with their practice. My advice to you is this. If your practitioner insists that you go to Commonwealth Eye, get a new doctor. read more

I had LASIK done by a different practice and have really dry eyes due to the surgery so came to CECA after being referred by my optometrist. I had punctal plugs placed in and for the first day, they weren't that bothersome. However, the following morning, the plugs were noticeably sticking way out of my ducts and were scratching my eyes which made them blood red and swollen. I called their office and spoke to the receptionist. I told her that I was in extreme pain and that I believed the plugs were causing potential damage. I asked to speak to the doctor who placed my plugs in and tried to ask to get seen by someone. The receptionist told me no and REFUSED to even alert the doctor of my situation. She just told me in a flat tone that I had to make an appointment with my referring optometrist to evaluate me first before their office would see me. From her attitude I honestly think she was just trying to have someone else deal with my problem! So I made an emergency appointment with my optometrist and when I saw her, she was startled to learn that they refused to see me right away that morning. She personally called their office to ensure that they would see me ASAP. By then, it was already the afternoon and my eyes were inflamed and I was in so much pain. I finally saw one of their doctors and he removed the plugs right away saying "Those definitely have to go!" (oh really? Maybe the swollen red eyeballs were a clue). He gave me prescription drops to stave off any potential infection and for the swelling. I just think the whole situation was ridiculous and that I had to suffer for all those hours because of their staff! I also agree with other Yelpers regarding the wait times here--- you sit there in the room for a while just waiting for the doctor to come in and it's because they are running extremely behind. You can definitely tell that the doctors are hurrying around from patient to patient because they are overbooked. This office is sadly just about the business and not the welfare of their patients so I am never returning because I simply do not trust their staff with my eyes! read more

After reading some of these reviews, I thought, 'maybe I should not have gone here'... but the opposite is actually the case. I'm writing this review ONE DAY after my 2nd cataract surgery. (I had my left eye done one week ago, and now my right). My doctor, Matthew Young, was very compassionate, thorough, and patient with all my questions. (Yes, I'm a 76 year old mechanical engineer). My eyes now see so crystal clear, it's absolutely amazing! Colors are pure, sharpness is incredible. He is very skilled at his trade, and obviously has done many of this type of surgery. Do your homework before seeing him, ask intelligent questions, you'll be rewarded with detailed answers. read more

I don't think you can always judge the wait time of a practice by the first visit; emergencies come up, people before you can be running late, forcing a longer wait time as the day goes on. This is what I told myself at the first visit, when my 1:30 appointment left me sitting in the waiting room until 2:45, then left to sit in the exam room for another 30 minutes. The first red flag was being required to pay for the appointment upon arrival. Why have people pay in advance, unless you have a lot of walkouts. When I commented on this practice to the woman at reception, she made a face and shrugged, then when back to picking at her nails. Second red flag. Dr. Michael was nice, exceptionally bubbly and thorough; no complaints there. So, I booked the recheck for six months later, this time making it one of the first appointments of the day, thinking I wouldn't be waiting as long. Guess what happened - same thing! A simple recheck took 2 hours and 15 minutes, with only 10 minutes of that actually spent with a doctor. While I like Dr. Michaels, he does not possess a unique skill set. Like everyone, my time is finite, and my full life does not allow for spare time, to sit in a waiting room and exam room, for 2-3 hours. I've since found another doctor. read more

Dr. Iourno removed my cataracts this year and I am very pleased with the results and with the quick responsiveness to my minor concerns after the surgery. He is a very intelligent and compassionate doctor. There is *always* a wait to see the doctor. I have never been to an ophthalmologist anywhere when there has not been a wait, and I've been going for over 40 years. Just bring a book and suck it up! read more

Staff was fine, but when I called to make an appointment they must not have been listening to me. Showed up for my appointment, told them I was there for a routine exam and new contacts, was told they don't do contacts and sent on my way. Couldn't get in somewhere else for another month which means wearing my monthly contacts extra long. Wasted PTO for nothing and they wanted to refer me to someone, but they clearly didn't listen to me during my first call so they lost all credibility for referrals. read more

I agree w the review about a traumatic experience. I had eyelid surgery. I was called right before the scheduled time and asked if I could come in an hour earlier to accommodate the doctor's schedule. When I got there, I found they had "forgotten" to prescribe the sedative. I offered to go get the Rx filled, but they didn't want to take the time to do it. I could either postpone the surgery ( after taking off work and juggling recovery time w two swollen,black eyes) or go ahead w/out sedation, which I was told would not be a problem. Hah! I required multiple numbing shots in the lid, which hurt FAR worse than a bee sting. The sound of my lids being cut & the smell of cauterized flesh still makes my stomach churn. It was inhumane to have such a procedure w/out sedation, w just so the dr could go home early. Extremely painful and unnecessarily traumatic! read more

Sabrina was great, friendly & efficient. Very short time spent with Dr. Michael, his hurried overall pace came across, possibly because of patients waiting in rooms, all full. I had very specific questions and he was somewhat flippant, but overall okay. I think he is competent, but don't need a dumbed down explanation for a chronic eye disease, or for that matter, no real explanation at all. I do my homework, I'm not a lemming. I would prefer more personalized care and may take my business elsewhere. read more

I have been going to CECA for several years due to glaucoma. I started being seen by Dr. Michael then Dr. Hobbs and a few times by Dr. Douglas. Every visit has been positive. They answer all my questions and work very closely with my Optometrist. On occasion I must wait 10-15 minutes to be called back for initial test and another 10-15 minutes to see the Dr. I have never had an issue with any of the staff. My only complaint is I rarely see the same staff (other than the ones at the front desk) twice. I feel everyone cares about me keeping my vision and they include me in making decisions about the next course of action. A great place with a great group of people. read more

Dr. Michael is a good doctor but he's way overbooked. I waited 1 1/2 hours for a five minute procedure and I'm not exaggerating at all. This is too much time to wait for a doctor. My time is as important as his. Fortunately I don't need long term care with this practice. I will look else where if I need any more procedures done on my eyes. read more
