I see Dr. Brooks in the Innsbrook office and he is a great physician. He is patient with my questions and very thorough in his eye exams. He has performed cataract surgery on both of my eyes and one of my husband's eyes. All surgeries went well and his calm demeanor helped calm my nerves prior to the procedure. The optical department is great with a good array of frames to choose from. They stand behind their work; when I felt one of the lenses in my glasses did not seem right, I was scheduled for another eye exam and the lens was reordered to the new prescription with no hassle and no charge. That is A+ customer service in my book. read more

I saw Dr. Brooks for a eye appointment and he was amazing. He was kind, patient and thoroughly explained everything to me. I have high anxiety and he was very nervous about the procedure and he allowed me the time to process all the information and then communicated with me through out the process. I am grateful for his expertise and understanding. I highly recommend him to anyone who is looking for a compassionate eye doctor. I will gladly travel almost two hours for an appointment to be seen by him. Also, I have read all of the reviews about the office staff not being the best but I did not experience this. Dr Bryan Brooks gets more than 5 star. I've seen him on last Friday. He is very thorough and explained why have occasional pain next to left eye, it's the muscle which is giving me pain sometimes when I stir for a long term on the computer screen. I'll definitely go see him again. However, I wanted to speak with the technician yesterday morning left message with a front desk I believe, she was In Midlothian office, told me she will pass the information so I can speak with the nurse who gave me the power. The person I called asked me all detail why I'm calling and all the stories I had to explain her. It was yesterday morning a passed till now no one called. It's a big practice. Very disappointed in this practice. I was referred to this practice for an acute stye on my eye. I had a current prescription, maybe three months old, and the doctor here insisted on doing a full eye exam, complete with dilation, before looking at the stye and selling me a heat pad. I got charged for both a full, unnecessary, objected-to prescription intake, and a visit for my eye, which was billed incorrected and then this branch threatened me to go to collections after one mailed notice of the fact that my insurance was charged (incorrectly) and there was no adjustment to the inflated bill. I'd stay away from this place, maybe the doctors are ok, but I definitely question their scruples. They just want money. Don't believe me? Christina is extremely rude. I was treated very poorly by her. No patient should be treated this way. It's several things that went wrong with the Innsbrook office. First I got there fifteen minutes early. I live thirty minutes away and with the traffic you could be early or late. It's 90 degrees that day. I was told if I don't fill out the paperwork online then it's okay to get there fifteen minutes early. The receptionist made a comment about me getting there too early??? This hasn't been an issue with any other Dr office I have been to. I let that go. I am at the age I needed a eye exam not for not seeing well only but also for sensations in my eyes. I didn't know if I would need glasses or contacts. However, during the course of the exam the Dr told me I would need glasses. I told her TWICE I wanted contacts. She refused to give me exam for contacts only for glasses. Okay then I find out I would need to get a separate exam for contacts. So I contact the Innsbrook contact lenses department and leave a message. Christina calls me back and leaves a RUDE message and asks me on voicemail why I didn't tell the Dr when I was in there. Are you kidding me? So I call the office back and speak to another woman who I told to leave a message for Christina that I did tell the Dr that omg, are you kidding me? Also they fail to take my driver's license and insurance information so I had to take a picture and send it to them. Said it was something wrong with machine but I think they forgot because they asked everyone else in there for it So I had to do that as well. I decided to make an appointment at Mechanicsville office because they are closer and told I would like Dr Lumpkin. Unfortunately, you can't call that office directly, strange. So I had to call the Innsbrook office and pushed the billing department. She was clueless or scared of Christina. Idk but after being put on hold, guess who I got yes Christina. I wanted to know if I was going to have to pay a copay for the contact lens exam. She rudely comes on the phone and says you will have to pay that 40.00 and I said why didn't they do this on the same exam. She says why didn't you tell the Dr when you were in there I said I did and she said I don't know. Before that I also told her my insurance said I wouldn't have to pay for the contact lens exam and she said excuse me like a teenager or something. The Dr was dismissive of my questions but I wouldn't leave a review of what the Dr did. She wasn't good but I could have changed drs but this Christina in the contact lens department should be fired. She also accused me of not having 40 dollars to pay the co-payment. Why would you keep such a rude, condescending, incompetent person on your staff. If you keep her, then you don't care about patients or maybe she's someone's relative or spouse. She certainly feels comfortable treating people this way. I will find another eye Dr. read more

I feel tricked. I went to REA for consultation re LASIC sometime in May 2018. I was told I was a good candidate, and Dr. Brooks scheduled my surgery for July. He stated that he provides any follow up care, including more corrective surgery, for 2 years post surgery. At that time I told him I was scheduled to move out of state at the end of July, about a week and a half after the scheduled surgery. He assured me that any follow up I might need could be done in Colorado and that he would make arrangements to have me covered there. In February of 2019 I contacted Dr. Brooks' office because of some concerns I had regarding some worrisome changes in my vision. I spoke to Dena Brooks, Dr. Brooks surgery coordinator, who said the Dr. would call me back that day. He did not call. I called about once a week for four to five weeks hoping to discuss the arrangements he initially stated he would make with a local surgery center here in Colorado. Today he finally returned my call, after over a month of me trying to reach him. He left a message stating that he would not be financially covering any follow up treatment I need here. He would only help me if I came to his office in Richmond Virginia. I would not have had my surgery in Virginia a week before moving to Colorado if he hadn't assured me that he would make arrangements to cover any complications I might have in Colorado. I feel tricked into having my surgery there. I trusted that he would do what he said he would. Now I'm in the position of having to start over with a new eye surgeon, because Dr. Brooks doesn't want to stand behind his work or his word. read more

Went here on recommendation from a coworker when I first moved to VA. The facilities were really nice, but I just didn't get a good feeling from the doctor. I also feel like he didn't really listen to me. I was right - when I went to a different doctor a year later, I found out I had a slight astigmatism that wasn't being corrected. Certainly not the worst, but there are so many better doctors out there. read more

I dread this visit every 6 months. Dr . Berstein may be popular but he needs to work on time management and staffing. It doesn't make since your appointment is at 10:45 am and he haven't seen you until 1:40pm and your leaving out after 2:30ish. Its rude to occupy patients day up for something that only takes less than 20 mins. He needs to schedule patients every 30-45 mins and around lunch time. Most of the patients are elderly and have diabetes. Its too long for them to sit. This is my 4th visit and its the same thing every time. The worse experience ever. I could've been at the emergency room and seen a random doctor and been discharged by now. This is ridiculous. He hot to do better. read more

I have been going to Richmond Eye Associates for 15 years under the VSP insurance. I retired at the end of 2017 and the VSP expired. But my eye doctor of 15 years at Richmond Eye Associates ( Doctor Lumpkin ) had assured me that the vision coverage on my Anthem Blue Cross Blue shield medical insurance would be more than adequate. I called Richmond Eye Associates and got an appointment for a regular annual eye exam and I advised them that I would be using my Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield card. They booked me with Bowman not Lumpkin and that should have alerted me to "funny business". I did not ask for anything other than a regular annual eye exam. I do not know the difference between a medical eye exam and a vision eye exam. After the exam they charged me $270 and said it would process against my deductible. Confused, I paid with HSA card and when home I check my Anthem Blue Vision and there it says $15 co-pay. $270 instead of $15 is outrageous! I will never darken their door again! read more

I am a fan of Dr. Bryan Brooks for Lasix surgery. I found him through a coworker's recommendation at VCU. Dr. Brooks took the time to answer all of my questions, had a thorough exam before and after my Lasix surgery in 2010, thorough annual follow-ups and addressed my dry eye issues. I'm happy to report that I still have 20/20 vision five years later (previously had 20/200 vision in both eyes) and remain glasses-free! read more

I have been seeint the Mechanicsville office for years now. All of the staff there is great! They are professional and right on the money with opinions. The longest wait I have had is 15 minutes. You can also have glasses made on site and their prices are good as well! read more

I was a patient at REA Innsbrook for 8 or 9 years. My initial visit was unremarkable, as was the doctor to whom I was assigned. I assume that the doctor was competent, but he showed no personality (good or bad). Turn-over among staff seems to be high. With the exception of the doctor, I rarely saw a familiar face from visit-to-visit. My dissatisfaction with this group grew over time. I never felt appreciated as a patient or a customer. On at least 3 occasions, glasses that I purchased from this group were not manufactured to the correct prescription. When I brought this up to the doctor, he made me feel as though I had done something wrong. ...On the business side, REA requests co-pays to be paid at time of service. While I generally agree with this practice, they have asked me for co-pays in the hundreds of dollars - which was NEVER correct. The last time I went for an appointment, I told them that I wanted to wait for my insurance EOB (Explanation of Benefits) before giving them a $300 co-pay. For me, it was not about the money: it was the principle. They didn't want to do that and declined to provide their services to me, which was their prerogative. And it was my prerogative to take my business elsewhere, which I did. ...It's not my intent to disparage this group because of my dis-satisfaction, but I would suggest that consumers research groups before selecting an optometrist. read more
