Before I knew any better, I would have said this hospice company was okay. The call center is a…read morepain in the rear to get connected to and often times the "secretary" is extremely unkind and unhelpful (depending on who you get connected to). I experienced long hold times more often than not. Of the several nurses that came to my mother's home, I would say 2 were worth their weight. It was like begging them to get them to adjust her comfort medications because she was not responding well to them. Eventually, they put her on their "ICC" care, where we were meant to have a nurse bedside for 8hr time blocks.... Which would have been helpful, had there actually been nurses available. They had no one pick up my mom's "open shift" -- twice. We had a nurse for an 8hr shift all of 3x before we discharged her from Vitas. Upon discharge, I called them to have them fax over her information to the new hospice company we had chosen. The admin professional I spoke to was extremely condescending, disrespectful and unhelpful. I thought this was all normal level of care to be expected as unfortunately we have dealt with Medicare level professionals for a long time. It wasn't until we signed on with a new hospice company in a different state that I realized VITAS was the problem. VITAS provided a mediocre level of care, resources, and respect to our family and it's really a shame that other families have to rely on this company for such an emotionally demanding time in their lives. I had high hopes when transitioning my mom onto hospice care, however this company DANGEROUSLY misses the mark. If you can avoid "program 96", please do.

She didn't miss a thing and once we were signed up I felt great relief knowing I had this company on board to walk me through this process. I called on a Monday, the nurse Amanda came to assess mom that afternoon and we had approval for services within an hour. By the next morning all sorts of equipment was delivered; it was amazing how quickly they worked. The next day Juliet the RN came and checked out mom. Both nurses were so kind and gentle with my mom. Juliet went over the transitioning signs and other information that was very helpful to me in knowing what to expect. She spent a lot of time with me, I never felt rushed; Juliet's care was genuine. Communication was top notch; I received text notifications every time Juliet was going to come by. Both Juliet and Joyce the social worker arrived within minutes of my mom transitioning and it was so comforting to have them here. I had interviewed other hospice companies in the past and while the people I met with were nice, they felt a bit fake. I did not feel this way about Unique Hospice. Their attention and care is real and very respectful. I highly recommend Unique Hospice to walk through this difficult time with you. She was very attentive and was gentle and very sure that I was comfortable I am a total care patient and need help with all the daily living activities like feeding dressing showering everything and she just was an exceptional CNA to have due to my condition. While my mother resided there, I visited her frequently and most always - unannounced. My mother was not just another person occupying a bed to the management & staff. They do not operate with a one-size-fits-all attitude. Not only did they provide medical care for my mother, but they engaged her in conversational topics they somehow learned she liked to talk about (sports, family, education, & spiritual, etc.). I also observed them engaging with the other residents by playing BINGO, while others chose to watch appropriate-entertaining movies, documentaries, etc. The point is that my mother (and all other residents) received a healthy dose of mental stimulation along with their medical care.
