We had a great experience here for happy hour on a spring Friday! The price of the appetizers was amazing at $8 each. My husbands old fashioned was also $8 and my banana pistachio flavored Il Warhol cocktail was $15. What an amazing deal! A recent return to Community Tavern reinforced our impression that the food was terrific (papaya salad, broccoli, pork ribs, carrots, dan dan noodles). However, the service experience this time was nothing short of bizarre. In addition to finding it difficult to, well, communicate and elicit suggestions - to be clear, there were no language issues at all - we were largely ignored by our server throughout the course of the meal and then rushed as we neared the finish. Abrupt, unhelpful, hurried... truly a substandard service experience and as the "host" I was frankly embarrassed. I'll note in fairness that we arrived on the later side the evening of our visit (albeit well within operating hours). Came here to catch up with friends and I have to say I'm glad we came. The ambiance is casual and trendy. It's family style ordering so we tried a bunch of food from the menu from each of the sections. We got the Brussels Sprout Tartine, Stripped Bass Crudo, Short Rib Dumplings, Nam Prik Egg Noodles, Roasted Chicken Roulade, 4 layer Coconut Cake. My favorite was the Crudo and Nam April Noodles. Lots of flavors in every bite. The chicken was also good but the lentils had a flavor that didn't really pair well with the chicken in my opinion. The dumplings are also delicious. The Brussels sprouts weee probably my least favorite. The picture on their main page with the cake was the reason I was craving the cake and it did not disappoint. Each dish is made unique with some garnish or sauce. The way they crisp the rice for the Crudo was amazing. Perfect flavor and texture profiles. Drinks are a bit pricey for what you get. They're not that special or made into a fancy garnished drink and you'd expect a bit more for the price. Service was good though I wish our waiter had come to refill waters and things like that regularly. He kept pushing drinks but never refilled water. They were pretty busy and the inside is a bit small so crowded but the food does come out quick. There's a lot of menu items that sounded good so I do want to come back and try more dishes. Overall I love the tapas style concept and do think for the price you get a decent portion. I felt we ordered a bit too much for the 3 of us. I think if the portions were smaller and they lowered the price I'd like it a lot more since I'm always one that loves trying a lot of different things. Went here for Happy Hour on a Wednesday, which started at 5 pm. We made reservations just in case but probably didn't need it. The place was a lot smaller than I thought it would be, but they make good use of the space with good style. I sat on a cushioned bench and was super comfortable. I tried a cocktail on the happy hour menu that tasted great. My favorite food was the Mushroom Butter Dumplings; so good. I also had the Green Papaya Salad and eventually their popular Double Cheeseburger with fries. Everything was delicious that my plates were completely cleaned after my meal. For dessert we had the Baked Alaska which was very good. Peter was our server and he treated us well. He seemed ver concerned about my friend's seafood allergy so he suggested options for her since a lot of the food had some sort of fish sauce/base. Such a lovely hidden gem in Portage Park/6 corners! The place is dim-lighted with vintage decor. It was pretty busy for a Friday night but they do offer reservations through yelp. Street parking was very easy to find too! Drinks: I appreciate that they have such great non-alcoholic options for the non-drinkers! I ordered the Valerie which has hibiscus and lemon - very refreshing! Food: To share, we ordered the short rib dumplings which were very good with a good amount of meat inside. TL;DR: Short Rib dumplings are the WOW factor, burger is average, but the sauce on it is good (get it on the side), quick and attentive service I originally went here for the Burger, but came out with a surprise. To me, the burger is NOT the main attraction. People should go for the short rib dumplings. They make all their dumplings in house and WOW - you can tell. The short rib dumplings were so delicious we almost ordered another round of them. The green papaya salad was very refreshing and tasty. The burger was a little bit of an upset when comparing it to other places. I think the burger was not something to talk about, but the short rib dumplings were and that is why I'd go back. My husband, 3 year old, and I came in a little over two weeks ago. We showed up without a reservation which was bad on our end. It was all together a pretty bad day with a lot of unexpected turns and it doesn't help that I am pregnant. The hostess was kind but let us know they didn't have any available seating. I let that last blow of the day hit me and left when I started to get teary eyed. A few minutes later the hostess ran out the door looking for us to let us know we could have a table for about 40 min if we wanted it. Loved the experience of this Asian fusion place! The decor is unique w 1920s style furniture and lighting (just my take on it... I'm not a historian). Food is really flavorful. I liked the basil and the sautéed greens added more flavor. The kim cheese fries $12 was such a great deal bc it could make 4 hungry people quell their hunger before the meals. I loved the crispy thin fries and cheese sauce and kimchi bc I usually eat kimchi with anything. The bibimbop $16 was salty and too flavorful for me with a lot of gochujang... (Korean red pepper paste). I would have liked more rice and veges in there to offset the strong flavors. The crispy noodles $16 were good and unique where the noodles curled over and were fried well and lots of fried garlic. Tasty but a bit too much flavor for me and a bit salty also. I wish there were more veggies in there. The Warhol drink $16 had pineapple rum, pistachio lemon foam, and some other ingredients I don't know, but it was very tasty and sweet. They have a party room for a capacity of 16 people max. It's very nice and elegant. Indoor and outdoor seating. 2 All gender bathrooms. It was good! It wasn't like blow your mind best food ever but it was good. My favorite dishes that we got were the kimcheese fries and the crispy noodles. I also really liked the pork part of the Sakura pork chop but I felt like all the other stuff it came with tasted burnt/bitter. It's been a little over a year since our first visit and Community Tavern has reliably become a place that we bring our friends and family. Most recently, my mom visited from Maine and she had an amazing time. We realized after we were done eating that everything (besides those absolutely amazing Brie and champagne mussels, which simply cannot be missed) we ordered had been vegetarian, even though all of us eat meat! None of us missed it, so if you're a vegetarian, you're in great hands. Also worth noting, the kafir lime cheesecake is new and SO good, almost savory. Writing this review after visiting many times, and celebrating some of life's big milestones here - this is well overdue. (This is about to sound like a paid advertisement, but I swear I'm just a fan girl in the neighborhood who's been here a lot.) Expect the gracious host or manager to greet you right away, and you will immediately feel like you're in the care of the entire establishment, not just one bartender or server. The vibe: warm and charming with clean lines. Just the right amount of trendy/eclectic feels. Lighting - lovely. Colors are modern and the seating is all comfortable (bar, banquette, table - all). The service: extremely team oriented, knowledgeable, and friendly. They love what they do, or pretend really, really well. The food: experimental BUT extremely approachable. I've been here for casual Tuesday night burgers at the bar (please do try the burger - it's the best on the northwest side), and for big birthdays, promotions, etc. My favorite way to dine at Community is to make a rezo, bring a handful of favorite people and get one or two of every single dish on the menu. I'm writing to update my review because Community Tavern is no longer a neighborhood steakhouse; several years ago ownership changed hands and it is now an American restaurant with heavy Korean influences. How much you enjoy the food will depend on how much you enjoy Korean spices and flavors. The exception to the rule is their cheeseburger, which is made in the smashburger style with two thin patties. It is considered one of the top burgers in the city, and it is why we visited this last Saturday. We started with the sea bass crudo, served on a square block of rice, seasoned with cilantro, turnip, bay leaf and coconut. Unfortunately there wasn't much coconut flavor with otherwise the dish was excellent; the fish was fresh and tender. The smashburger was perfectly executed if you like that style; I do not like the crispness of the patties on the edges, but otherwise it was a tasty, juicy burger. Cheesy, with a flavorful sauce and fresh pickles. The fries were my favorite - the classic pommes frites variety - skinny and stripped, and were excellent. Worth the trip if you like the smashburger style. Make sure you save room for dessert, because their Baked Alaska has CHOCOLATE cake and CHOCOLATE gelato, and is scrumptious. It pairs beautifully with their after dinner riff on an old fashioned, with rye and fernet branca. They make a superb Rittenhouse rye manhattan for before dinner, as well. The wine list always has interesting choices on it, and is quite affordable. Community also does a monthly wine dinner, which is worth subscribing to, although the dinners can be hit or miss. Unfortunately they are very conservative in their wine pours, so pace yourself or you may be paying for extra glasses. read more

Community Tavern really tempted me to dole out a 5 star review. They fall just shy, but can easily get there. For now I'm rating 4.49 stars. The SHORT RIB DUMPLINGS are however 5 star worthy. I could eat an endless supply of these. They're perfectly rich, salty, sweet, and savory. If you order one thing on the menu make sure it's these. The Kimchi Mussels, 4 Layer Coconut Cake, and Chocolate Baked Alaska are other standouts. Service has been attentive and the cocktails are well balanced. I like Community. It's one of the only nicer restaurants in Portage Park, so it's such a gem. Kids eat free with any adult meal Sunday through Thursday, so we recently took advantage on a Sunday evening. I made a reservation for 3 for my husband, myself, my son and my newborn daughter. Head of house made sure to tell us multiple times I should have made the reservation for 4 since there were four of us. I was confused why we were corrected for my "error" of not counting my newborn daughter (since I literally baby wore her in my seat for the whole entire meal), but let it roll off my shoulders. The food was super good. We loved the Korean pancakes so, so much! My son chose the cheeseburger, I got the bibimbop, my husband got a daily special, and we ended the night with the baked Alaska. Overall solid food... and happy hour drinks, too!! Our table service was actually fantastic. He specifically asked what my kiddos' names were and treated my 2 year old son like a big boy while he waited for him to order his own meal. Our server was truly just the sweetest! They do have an outdoor patio in front, which is where we sat, and it was perfect. Definitely something to take advantage of in nicer weather. It's been several years, change in ownership and complete menu overhaul since I've dined here. The small boutique restaurant evolved from esoteric, more expensive steakhouse to a friendlier more affordable shared plates focus that's described as "new American with Pan-Asian influence." The noodles and dumpling dishes are creative and elevated. Chef Joey Beato doesn't disappoint, maintaining his reign as one of the city's most intuitive (and underrated) chefs, IMO. Servings are substantial and beautifully plated. I was impressed by the mock-tail/nonalcoholic beverage menu. Vibe is relaxed but attentive. Ambiance semi spartan, chic.... Vintage chandeliers and a gorgeous bar gives it a casual understated feeling. Recommend sitting/eating at the bar for special attention, including sampling the mixologists newest creative libations. Street parking is generally relatively easy on this patiently emerging stretch of Milwaukee where it currently earns hidden gem status. Avoid pretentiousness, crowds and higher average checks of other restaurants of this caliber. I could make this a monthly sojourn and not tire of it.
