Big Hill Bar & Grill in North Park is a low-key gem that hits the sweet spot between neighborhood chill and elevated eats. I rolled in on a Friday night and grabbed the Gaucho sandwich--fried chicken, grilled mushrooms, Oaxaca cheese, chimichurri--plus a side of their crispy fries. The flavors were on point, and the chimichurri gave it that extra kick. My buddy went for the Flat Top Burger. We split an order of lemon herb wings to start--tangy, buttery, and not shy on the feta. Drinks-wise, I had their house margarita, which was solid and not too sweet. All in, we spent about $65 for two, and it felt worth every penny. Big Hill is a big hit! I brought my parents here on Friday for dinner and it was a great call! The decor is a mix between modern and old school barn type decor. We sat ourselves and the only negative was no one came to take our order for about 10 minutes until I made some eye contact with the hostess and one of the waitresses. That was the only hiccup. I had one of their Manhattans which was very smooth and a great drink. Beyond that I did their BH Burger which consisted of beef, cheddar, onion, lettuce, special sauce, mustard, pickles, toasted brioche. I will say next time I'd get the secret sauce on the side. I seemed to get all over the bottom of the burger making the bun soggy. It was very tasty and the accompanying fresh cut fries were great! Burger was juicy and tasty but the bowl was very underwhelming. The bowl lacked spice, flavor, seasoning, it all tasted like oily fried chicken and mayo. There was no heat, pepper, nor salt, the lime was dried out so lack of acid. Not picture, Buffalo wings, those were tasty, fried nicely and coated well in sauce. read more

I got takeout from this place on recommendation of my Alderman. If what I had for takeout is just a taste of what it's like to actually eat inside, this might be one of the best new restaurants I've been to! We got a whole bunch of stuff, but every single thing we had was excellent. This place has awesome lemon herb wings and guacamole! We also tested out the elotes which were on the cob, but had perfect amount of lime and spice! We also had a sausage roll which was similar to that Irish dish, but made with an Italian twist. It was more like a sliced calzone! For dinner, I had the fried chicken burrito special which I expected to be a little crunchier, but had really bold flavors that were the perfect amount of spice and heat. The fries were also excellent. With this takeout, we had a couple of mixed drinks which were excellent. I had the honey jar which was a good mix of gin and sweet honey. I'm glad I caught the post by my alderman as this place was legitimately fantastic and a local small business we should be supporting during these times. I highly recommend! read more

I tried this restaurant in North Park on a whim. The reviews were very mixed and figured it was worth a shot. It's definitely a bar, with food. When you first walk in, there's a beautiful bar places in the back and a few small tables to sit for actual food. Despite that, I wanted food. We started with the poke stack. Quite a few yelpers wrote that it was good and they were correct! It comes with three pieces of a cracker that tastes like Nori but is a bit thicker, grade A quality tuna, and a few other ingredients. I would eat it over and over if I could. Definitely impressed! I, then, decided to try something out of the blue and get their steak toast. It sounded super interesting: sourdough bread, steak, tomato, cottage cheese. I like all of those separately but was unsure about them all together, especially the cottage cheese. Be warned, you NEED to like cottage cheese to get this dish. Overall, it was a very interesting dish. All the ingredients actually worked- I'd definitely recommend. A couple of others commented about the price. It's not too expensive, it's reasonably priced a tad bit on the high end. The poke stack was $14, cocktails are about $12, the entree was $17. Nothing too crazy- especially for good food! read more

This is a four-star review, but I really love this place. Details to come. Big Hill opened four years ago, but I wasn't active on Yelp back then. Then the pandemic hit, and I didn't leave the house for two years. BH is close to where I work, NOT where I live, so I wasn't in the neighborhood. But some time in the past year I started going to work again, and I was happy to see both of us had survived The Plague. Big Hill is the creation of Manny Mejia, the hardest working man in Albany Park. He also runs Bryn Mawr Breakfast Club, and when I say "runs," I mean he works there all day and here all night. Under those circumstances, I would NOT be as cheerful as he always seems to be. The menu has changed considerably since they opened. It's basically a bar & grill; burgers, sandwiches, tacos. The menu has become more eclectic (based on my memory) and has more Asian-inspired dishes, such as their rice bowls (poke, pork, and chicken katsu) and bahn mi. (Note: Manny worked at Jin Ju, so this isn't out of his wheelhouse.) The menu isn't large, but it has a nice selection. It could REALLY benefit from some vegetarian options. Right now there's one salad and a veggie burger. It would be easy enough to add a bowl with tofu (or no protein at all) and a veggie taco, and I think this neighborhood would appreciate it. Service is not up to the food. Many restaurants have reduced staff since Covid, and I think there were only two servers handling the restaurant and the patio the night we were there. (By the way, the backyard patio is LOVELY. Comfortable and secluded, with nice dining/drinking nooks) I was part of a party of five sitting on the patio. I was the second to arrive. I ordered a drink. By the time the rest of my party arrived, I hadn't received my drink. Eventually the other three arrived, and ordered their drinks. By the time their drinks arrived, I still hadn't received my drink. One of the drinks on the tray appeared to be my drink, so I took it, but it wasn't my drink. No one at our table had ordered the drink I received. I don't know if it was for another table, and neither did the server. But by the time those drinks came out, I was going to take a drink. Note that the kitchen closes at 9, and by 9:30 they'll be shagging you out the door. This seems to be standard in our post-Covid world. Big Hill is in a primarily residential neighborhood, with not much late night traffic, so this isn't surprising. Overall, Big Hill was a positive experience. The disappointments were truly disappointing, because they spoiled an otherwise very pleasant experience. I'll certainly be back, and I recommend it highly. read more

Came here for a date night with my gf and we were blow away with the food, atmosphere, and service! Both order bowls carnitas and steak and both amazing! Our waitress recommended my gf a virgin mix drink after we informed her she was craving a sour salty taste since we're expecting a little one and it was right on the nose! A very friendly neighborhood place that offers delicious dishes! My friends and I ordered steak toast, hummus and BLT salad. The steak was well seasoned and perfectly cooked. I believe they used white beans to make the hummus that was served with carrots, cucumbers and plenty of pita bread. I devoured my BLT salad because it was that delicious. My Kamikaze was a bit disappointing because it came with a cherry. There are only 3 ingredients in a kamikaze and cherry isn't one of them, not even to garnish. The overlooked North Park neighborhood is finally getting a trendy neighborhood pub. The owner of Bryn Mawr Breakfast Club is opening Big Hill (Bryn Mawr - look it up!) with a full kitchen of upscale pub grub, curated tap, and specialty cocktail list. The interior vibe is wood and chill--Japanese scorched bee-hive wood, exposed brick, and touches from the previous Tofu House that occupied the space. Menu is city pub-grub, including some impressively fresh gauc with smoked paprika-dusted chips, wings, sausage bread, and more. I came back after a year to try out the seasonal specials. First thing I noticed walking in was that there was an old water smell in the air... it wasn't strong but faint enough that to distract me from my goat cheeseburger. Yes, I got the goat cheeseburger that had roasted red peppers on a brioche bun. It either came with fries or a salad but I got a side salad anyway in which was more than a side! The lemon vinaigrette paired well with the greens/cranberries with chopped radishes and cucumbers. The burgers was smaller than expected but the menu was right about a thickk patty. However, in my opinion, that was some good quality goat cheese! I would need to come back to try the rest of the specials. 5/10 read more

My girlfriend had the Poké Bowl and I had the Flat Top Burger. We also ordered Elotes as an appetizer. The Elotes were great. I really enjoyed the addition of cilantro on them. I've never had that on an Elote before. The Poké Bowl was made with Rice, Tuna, green onions, ginger, sesame seeds & jalapeños. She enjoyed it, however she said it was a little heavy on the ginger. The flat top burger had grilled double patties, American cheese, onions & garlic aioli on a cornmeal bun. The burger was good, nothing special. Personally, the best part of my meal were the Elotes. The service was great. Due to Covid(I'm assuming), it was pretty empty. The patio is open as well for dine. Inside is open for dine in and they are social distancing tables. It's a very big spot. What a disappointment. My husband and I were so excited for a bar and grill in the neighborhood. WE LOVE Bryn Mawr Breakfast Club so couldn't wait to try Big Hill. The host was friendly and got us sat pretty quickly. We were freezing! My sister joined us and we shivered with our coats on. Looking around many other people had their costs on too. It took awhile to place an order, we ordered drinks and food at a be same time. It took about 10-15 minutes to receive our drinks and 30 for food. In that time no one came to refill water on check in, if they had we could have asked about our appetizer that never came. When our food arrived I asked about our appetizer, our server said it would be right out. We all finished our food by the time she came back to see if it ever came. At that point I just asked for our check. We got no "I'm sorry that never came out" nothing. Almost rude as if it was my fault. With an overpriced cocktail before tip it's about $30 a person. I had the tacos they were good but left a little hungry. Unfortunately this is an overpriced miss for us and won't be returning. read more

After about an hour and a half of waiting for the server to appear I decided to not wait the extra couple of hours and just went their booze route. Ordered a banana boulevardier. Obviously had their own spin on it with the combinations but none the less should be similar to its forefather. WRONG! Nothing close. It was like brandy, not even good brandy, with some f*cking red dye... no orange peel garnish or even an ice cube (to be fair, that probably was in there and melted after sitting for another 30-45 min at the bar). Very cool, hip (yeah, I'm old enough to say that) neighborhood gastro. We stopped in for a quick drink. I had a smooth Koval Old Fashion (missing the Luxardos), my friends had a dirty Kettle martini and a Half Acre Reaper Stout (Soo good). We fill our gullets with nothing but the finest! But What?! No coffee! My wife wanted coffee. They said no coffee... when baby wants coffee!!! eh, she'll have to wait, I guess. Suggestion: make coffee and pair with shareable deserts! Boom! Up that PPA! Big Hill is one of the newest additions to the North Park area. It definitely stands out in terms of look and feel. Both the interior and exterior of the restaurant have been completely redone to have a chill/hipstery vibe. The waitress was attentive but not overbearing. She also seemed to have great knowledge of the drink menu. She was able to walk my friend through several beer options and the differences between some. I don't think the food was anything to rave about though. My friend and both got their Flat Top burger with fries and an order of chips/guacamole to share. The burger patties were just average but the caramelized onion and garlic aioili added some savoriness. The fries were delicious! I liked that it wasn't drenched in oil and salt. The chips seemed to have been homemade which was a nice touch. It was warm and crunchy when it came out. The guac was a tad to sour (limey) but tasted fresh! If I was in the area and wanted some standard American/bar food, I might go back. The service was great and they had drink specials. But, it's definitely not on my list to visit again anytime soon. The wings (different, unique) were on point and they didn't skimp on the alcohol. This place has some Little Bad Wolf (Andersonville burger/bar hot spot) vibes. The restaurant has a few kinks to iron out (wait time), but I look forward to being a regular - so happy to have a bar in walking distance! P.S. There is metered and neighborhood free/permit parking.
