I've been getting acupuncture, off and on, for years. An old whiplash injury left me periodically aching in my neck and shoulder. Among other modalities, I got acupuncture and combined with treatments, I've been able to do physical things I've wanted to do if I pay attention to my body and its messages (of discomfort or pain.) I recently had several acupuncture sessions at Community Wellness Collaborative and I found the experience to be more dramatic than my other acupuncture experiences have been. This time, we are working on the repercussions of a broken shoulder. During the treatment, I can feel my body pulling in all the loose ends of the day and bundling my body back together, feeling relaxed and refreshed. (That's the best way I can describe it.) I have received chiropractic care for the last 10 years and have gone to 6 different chiropractors - I can confidently say Dr Jarvis blows the rest out of the water! Each session is personalized to the issues I am facing at that time whether it be hip pain, ankle pain, or a calf injury. Other chiros I have seen do the same adjustment each appt and send me on my way as quickly as they can. I went in for acupuncture treatments and I'm not sure if they are in-network for me anymore so I didn't get to continue coming for too long, but I had a very good experience here, Leda was my acupuncturist and is very laid back yet professional, knowledgeable, friendly, and accommodating. EB-305 AND NEEDLES Resetting my mind, body, and spirit because the inner hippy in me is finding balance through the pores of my feet and the tips of needles. It's 2019, I just received my 12th Elite Yelper Badge which was blasted through social media, that encouraged tons of comments from friends, and likely many of you are now here... reading. my. reviews because I been "adulting" and y'all are nosy. AND therefore the pressure is on to write something that I've done recently. So, I thought I'd start with this place and work backwards into my 17 day "west coast holiday sabbatical". THE SETUP. I purchased a package deal "acupuncture + ionic foot bath" months ago. Called early Dec. to set appointment for first week of Jan. Right when I get back from vacation. I thought this would be a perfect start amongst other activities I've indulged in for a fresh new year beginning. The staff was super friendly and kind over the phone. I received a phone call days prior and email notifications reminders. THE APPOINTMENT. I arrived 5 minutes prior to my scheduled appointment time. New patients, give yourself 10-15 for tons of paperwork to fill. The first part was the foot bath and then acupuncture. Phones in silent because this is a quiet and zenful place. "FOOT BATH" AKA EB-305. I was shown to a shared backroom that had the Foot Baths. I was briefly told about the ionizing foot bath but went in/out of my ears as I was trying to multitask (fill out paperwork, take off my shoes and socks, etc). What stood out was "this will take about 23 minutes". All this time I thought I was getting a warm foot soak like at the spas or nail shop. I finished paper work and closed my eyes for a few minutes (~20 min pass). I look down and my foot bath, once clear water, now looked like sewage. I was expecting a bubble bath at my feet so this freaked me out. I quickly grabbed the EB-305 and read about it. Bye toxins! This is suppose to help with balancing your PH and honestly I did feel 'lighter' afterwards. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. My scary looking IG stories has encouraged curious friends to try it! ACUPUNCTURE. I was then moved to another room for my acupuncture session. We discussed some areas of my body where I feel pain and went over my paperwork. Such kind, friendly, and informative staff. I had the option to upgrade to a table but declined and stayed with the recliner. The needles didn't feel like anything when being inserted around my body, EXCEPT at the bottom of my feet - felt like I had stepped on a needle. The pain quickly subsides. I have a blood deficiency and do bruise easily, in majority of the places where the needles were had left harmless tiny bruises (I bruise easily) but the average person should have no side affects. We focused more on my left knee and feet (old running injury) and partially my right upper back. I have many other remedies for my injuries so attending my session I was not in any discomfort which makes it challenging to measure the healing success of one acupuncture session. It's too early for me to say if I acupuncture is "real" or a "placebo effect", but I am willing to continue. My session came to an end at approx 1.5hrs. They presented to me their 6 month package and new client package... I'm considering! My overall experience was very relaxing and inviting. It's something different and I like different. I just had my first appointment with Chiropractor Dr. Dave, and so far I'm totally impressed with his approach (and I'm a skeptic on chiropractics.) I've had experience with massages and acupuncture here, and both will work wonders on you. I had Gretchen as a masseuse, and this woman works absolute miracles on your body. Aches be damned when you've got Gretchen on your side. I had my first ever experience with acupuncture at AAIH for two years on and off (solely based on my changes in insurance), and I am continuing to receive these services there. My first acupuncturist was Leda, and she means a lo to me not only because she's a super cool chick with a relaxed demeanor, but she is the one who helped me get over my fear of needles and introduced me to the healing powers of this ancient Chinese medicine in the first place. Leda helped rid me of a lot of chest pain, anxiety, and depression, and I couldn't be more grateful for her. After some changes in my schedule, I started seeing another practitioner named Michelle, and she is equally as wonderful and amazing as Leda. Michelle is currently helping me with aches & pains that persist from an injury I had back in January. Not only have semi-regular (every 2 weeks) visits been extremely helpful with this injury, but the treatments have helped me miraculously unwind chronic neck tension that I've been holding onto for years. Adams Ave Integrative Health has been crucial in my journeys of rejuvenation, restoration, and recovery. Dr Dave is nothing short of an Angel. I have been seeing him for years at this point and I don't foresee leaving. In fact, when considering moving out of state, losing Dr Dave was a factor. He is so much more than a chiropractor- he takes a personal interest in his patients and you can see that care in the satisfaction of everyone who leaves his office. Book early! His schedule fills up! He sees whole happy families, which is frankly adorable, but makes his appointments elusive. I came here for a massage as I just moved to the neighborhood and needed to find a new massage therapist. I made an appointment and they gave me a packet of paperwork to complete. Most of the questions related were geared toward what a Dr. would want to know and aren't relevant for a massage so I didn't answer those. The front desk receptionist kept telling me I had to complete these and I declined letting her know I only wanted a massage and the therapist doesn't need to know my full medical history. She ended up saying "well in the interest of time, please fill it out". No thank you. I didn't and the therapist had no problems with me leaving those specific questions blank. I like the overall concept of a sliding scale pay for services situation. However, if I pay a rate above the average for a massage in San Diego I expect that the services and massage will be above average. My massage was okay but mostly the facility felt dirty and run down. My room was closed off by a bunch of sheets or curtains and there were other people on the other side which was distracting from my experience. So when I was told my price, I was shocked. I should have asked before my massage - my bad! For my personal needs and expectations, I won't be back but I do think it's a great resource for the community. read more

I have been a patient at Adams Avenue for over 8 years now. I find acupuncture to be my go to for immune boosting, massage therapy for stress and knots and Dr Dave for my chiro adjustments and nutritional needs. Dr Dave has an incredibly effective way of using muscle testing to pin point the exact location and approach for the adjustment. He is so effective I have my whole family seeing him monthly. It was because of Dr Dave's holistic health approach that he brought some issues with my son to my attention. Because of the orthotics he prescribed my son as a growing kid, he was able to walk and run more straight and likely avoiding pain and issues in his hips and knees especially as he grew to 6 ft tall. What I am most grateful for Dr Dave is he shared a few minor issues I never thought of that when combined he recommended we have my son visit his pediatrician for further investigation. Long story short my son was diagnosed with a heart condition that he had since birth and we never knew until Dr Dave. His cardiologist said how lucky we were to find it and now have him on a preventive plan that can significantly increases he chances of avoiding serious heart issues. I can't say enough good things about this establishment! First off, they are handling covid precautions SO well, and have made me feel so safe. They screen you carefully, have private rooms, and I have even seen the people at the front cleaning the door knobs when a customer enters/exits. So huge shoutout for that! Second, the people that schedule you are friendly, attentive and always call/email to remind you of your upcoming session. They were incredibly helpful initially with ensuring my insurance was all squared away, which is always a headache. Once my insurance sessions run out, I was reassured by the pricing they have in place. It is incredibly affordable, especially given how amazing this place is. I also want to give them kudos for ambience- I instantly melt/relax upon entering, from the low lighting to the very relaxing music/table warmers. It is the only hour per week I can truly relax, and for that I am grateful! But the best part of my experience by far is Leda. She is my acupuncturist, and she is nothing short of amazing. First off, she is just a super chill and cool person and really listens and makes you feel validated with your health concerns. I also have always been nervous with acupuncture/needles and I hardly ever feel it in these sessions. After only one visit, I am a HUGE fan. I was referred to this clinic by my acupuncturist, and some other close friends, for a chiropractic adjustment and evaluation. I was pleased to see I could request my 1st appointment online, but chose instead to book over the phone. I found the location with ease, found street parking even easier, and was asked to sign a few consent forms, standard fare for this kind of visit. They had emailed me new patient forms ahead of time which I completed prior to my appointment which saved me a lot of time. Dr. McCann is fantastic! A thorough chiropractor who relies on a wide variety of gadgets and expertise to get to the root of the problem. He performed a full diagnostic assessment on me, and performed a couple of adjustments. he evaluated me as a whole person not just a targeted symptom which was very comforting. I was instantly at ease with him and feel confident in his abilities. The facilities themselves are not "open" as described by other reviewers. The chiro room is a little small, and I saw the acupuncture chairs in another room when I passed through to use the restroom. They are separate rooms, but adjoin so patients will sometimes walk through the edge of one room to get to another. It didn't bother me in the slightest, especially since I have been to other "high end" chiropractors who utilize the same or similar setups for their practices. The sliding scale for treatment makes their services highly affordable, and despite this I feel I received a very high level of care; both from the front desk and Dr. Dave. Their new patient special of $100 for 3 visits is a steal and I will continue to see Dr. McCann for treatment. I've been seeing Dr.Dave McCann as my Chiropractor and Nutritionist for just about 10 years now. It's really hard to express the level of appreciation, admiration and respect I have for Dave. Would not recommend.... getting acupuncture while you're sitting in a chair with your clothes on is definitely not the way to get an effective acupuncture treatment the only way to get an effective acupuncture treatment is in a quiet Serene room and have the meridians ....acupuncture to the back and neck , effective acupuncture is never just hands and feet and maybe forehead that's never the most effective acupuncture treatment but these type of places brainwash the public to think that it is effective when it's just a cheapy way of giving a cheap acupuncture session. I really hate to knock a community based business that's there to help people with low incomes (or no income, like myself). That being said, I'll also metion that this review is based on one experience. I went in for a massage because I have neck/ back issues and they offer services on a sliding scale. The secretary- really nice lady, although a little bit spacey (she talked herself through the process of ringing me up). The ambience- none really. It's an open floor plan, there are no separate rooms for massage. Here's the weird thing: The massage tables are set up behing curtains that are held closed with random strips of velcro. The segregated massage area also faces the acupuncture chairs. There are big gaps between the velcro so EVERYONE can see you taking your clothes off. So, I hope you are comfortable with your body, because a lot of people will see it. My therapist- interestingly enough, a former student where I used to work. Nice guy, BUT: *He very obviously had a cold/or some allergy issues because I kept hearing him snort up his pleghm every 5 minutes (GRRROOOSSS) * He talked during the entire massage about his surf/massage endeavors (dude, put the bong down) *He also told me that he started his own practice while he was still a student (that's totally illegal, which, btw, he acknowledged) The massage was OK. Honestly, the sliding scale isn't that affordable. $50 for an hour massage ain't that cheap. You can go to a massage school and get the same quality, but for half the price. Or, you can pay an extra $15 (total of $65) and get a stellar massage by a pro. So, I won't go back for massage, but maybe I'll check out some of the other services they provide. read more

My wife treated me to a massage here for Father's Day. I had never been here, but to know more about the organization, I appreciate what they do to help the community and low-income people. The receptionist was really nice and friendly. The "rooms" are connected and offers privacy, but not too much. The massage itself was great. The therapist did a really solid job. But she wasn't very friendly. She led me to the room and asked me if I have any areas that are really troubling me. I answered "No, just my whole body in general." She then left without even giving me instructions on whether to undress or not. She came back in, and expected me to be ready. I told her I didn't know I was suppose to undress... And during the massage, nothing at all was said, until the end where she simply said, "Thank you" and left. So to sum it up: The massage was 4/5, but the service was horrible (other than the receptionist). read more

I had my first massage at the Integrative Health center this week. I was very happy with my experience. I love the fact that they opened an alternative healing center that is affordable for lower income people. I've never paid for a massage before because it was always out of my price range. Lately though, I've had a lot of pain in my upper back muscles (stupid desk job!), and it's interfering with my dance practice. I was delighted to find out that they have a sliding scale payment system. So I scheduled a half hour message just to try it out. My masseuse, Sandra, was very nice and professional. I received a stellar massage, and I was just relaxed into a pile of jello on the table. It was worth the cost, for sure. My only slight displeasure was the aesthetics of the room. I'm very sensitive to environment and ambiance. The massages are done in on tables surrounded by long curtains in the main room. The light is really bright and garish, and the walls and curtains a sterile white. It was very clinical feeling, not relaxing. It would be nice if some organic decorations and soothing colors were integrated into the decor. Other than that, it was a wonderful experience, and I set up another appointment for a deep tissue massage. Thank you to the owners for creating such a wonderful place for healing. *And a quick note for finding the place- It's right by Rosie O'Grady's. This is my first review and the first time I have written a love letter to a business. I moved to San Diego in March and was very ill. The Doctors in the East Bay could find nothing wrong with me after running test after test that proved I was in great health. One of my goals in March was to be able to walk to a coffee shop that was a block away and home again. I was walking by AAIG and stopped to look at what they had posted in the window when Dr. Dave walked out and talked about their services. He told me they were having an open house on the following Saturday. I went. It has now been 5 1/2 months working with Drs. David and Colleen McCann and I am a new person. I have had chiropractic and energy work plus nutritional counseling and foot baths for detoxifying. I was committed to my healing and knew I had found the people who could facilitate this happening for me. Last Sunday I walked just under a mile in my neighborhood to have brunch with my daughter. This was a far cry from my goal of around the corner to the coffee shop. While I did not have a terminal condition I no longer had the quality of life that made it possible for me to participate fully in the world. They gave me back my life. I will be forever grateful. At the time I started going to them I was unable to work so the sliding scale made it possible for me to get the work that I needed. So I did my research and chose this location based on distance from my house, and reviews of course. I can't even explain what I just experienced here. I walked in and explained my situation to Joe, my acupuncturist, and he knew exactly what to say. He had me relax and told me to just think about my baby, and so I did. Since my transfer, I've been beyond stressed and scared and worried, like what if it doesn't work, will my husband leave me, will I ever be able to have kids.... etc. I feel none of that now. I feel weightless. Mind, body and soul. I feel so strong and so hopeful. I'm just awe struck. Honestly. That was such an incredibly beautiful experience. I have been waiting out putting up my review for this place. While I like that they are affordable, $25 a visit for students, I didn't like the one time fee. Although I looked up a bunch of places before I decided to go here and they all have a one time fee, and its generally a lot more $ than here. You get what you pay for with this place, like one reviewer said, its an open space, so you hear what other people are doing, and there really isn't "privacy". Anyway, I have been here twice. I went for Acupuncture only. I injured my achilles tendon and even though I had been following my doctors orders and talking to my PT friend, I wanted to see what else I could do, so I could get back on track and working out, what I found was Acupuncture. I wasn't sure if it would work, I am open to other methods than just western medicine, things like herb treatments and acupuncture is what I like to call "Hippie medicine". I am somewhat hippie myself, so I do not find this offensive. When I went the first time, I have to fill out a bunch of papers you find standard when you go to doctors office, thats fine. Then I was taken behind the curtain to a massage table and I consulted with my female acupuncturist, she was nice, soft spoken and talked me throughout the process. I was checking things off in my head about this just being quackery, or beneficial. When she asked me to see my tongue, I put a big red mental check in the "Quackery" column (I have since googled why they ask, but I still think its weird). She then put the needles in the injured leg and I was told to relax. She also put a few needles in my other leg, and in my arm, I did not like that, but once it go uncomfortable she removed the ones in my arm. Afterwards my leg felt a lot better, I could barely feel any strain on my tendon. she recommended coming in once a week for a couple weeks then I could space it out to every other week, and then if needed, a total of maybe 8 visits she said. Although the pain in my leg came back really soon (within 20 minutes), it was less than normal, and I was somewhat pleased with the results. The next time I booked an appointment, it was just with whoever was available. I was helped right away by a male acupuncturist and I was asked to sit down on one of the lazy boy recliners. Odd, I thought, but whatever. After the tongue thing again, he started with the needles, all in the FRONT of my UNINJURED leg. I understand acupuncture is about the tendons being connected, blah blah blah, I get it. Then 2 needles in my wrist and one in my foot, between my big toe and the other toe. No needle in my injured leg until I gave a weird look and then he had my pinpoint the pain and then he stuck a needle there. Not only did the positioning of the needles annoy me, but the guy seemed to just shove them right in, I flinched every time, and once pulled back, and he said: "oh generally my tattooed patients don't even flinch" Well, just because I'm tattooed doesn't mean I'm immune to pain, it hurt a lot more than the first time I went, which made that second time the LAST time I go here. The guy also said that I should extensively get treatments, about 2 a week for at least 8 weeks. No thanks. I haven't been for about a month, and I have been fine with just stretching, yoga, ice and tiger balm, and I am already running again. For some people, this can work, it just didn't for me. ***** I'm updating this review solely because the owner contacted me to let me know that the guy from my second visit no longer works with this business. If my review was purely from the first experience, I would have given it 4 stars at the time because of the lack of privacy overall. Love these folks - Dr. Dave McCann, DC, the chiropractor is the best I've ever had... very gentle, no rack 'em crack 'em here. And the treatments last. His wife does energy healing that's outstanding. The place is too small, but other than that I love it and would recommend it to anyone. read more

I receive acupuncture twice a month here, and it has helped me beyond what I had imagined possible. I feel comfortable and easy in expressing all my health problems, as my healers are always more than willing to explore with me every nook and cranny that has any influence on my overall state of health. Before stepping foot, I was quite cynical to whether or not acupuncture could help my particular ailment. I am a 22 year old female experiencing dreaded irregular menstrual cycles. Throughout my life, I have gone to several doctors whose (not surprisingly) only other alternative was to get on birth control. I experimented with this a couple times, with different levels of hormones, and still I was never satisfied. They completely affected me in ways I don't quite understand, and left me in a lot of fluctuating cycles of just about everything female. Finally I decided to take a holistic approach, and couldn't be more relieved. I'm not going to go into detail about the specifics, but let's just assume that it brought my faith in healing to the next level. I hope that more and more will come to see the spirit of a healer and their ability to help one's body self heal.
