I'm always searching for more Detroit style pizza to try. I had been meaning to try Como's for a while, and finally made it there a few days ago. The pizza was decent, but I felt it didn't fully meet the requirements to be "Detroit Style". First, the cheese wasn't all the way to the crust. Second, the crust didn't quite have that crunch that it needs (maybe another 5 minutes in the oven would have done the trick). Aside from the pizza, the outdoor area at Como's is AWESOME. Great spot for a dinner with friends! We got the Italian Guac, Cheese Bread, and the Joshua J pizza and they were all delicious but of these 3 things I would probably opt to order the Joshua J again if I could just choose one. The spicy honey on it was such a highlight for me. The only thing that wasn't as great during our experience, is that we felt super rushed through our entire meal. The restaurant wasn't all that busy when we were seated but about 10 minutes after our food came, our waitress asked us if we would like our check and then when we said we weren't quite ready she came back with boxes for our food which we were still working on. Yesterday evening (7:30pm or so) the place was full. The service was ok, but the gave us the wrong salad order. I ordered the greek salad at the patio bar to share with my spouse. They brought the Antipasto out and it turns out the lady seat across from us and it happen to them 3 times. The pizza was good. It took a while to come out. I had to ask how much longer on the pizza because most ppl around the bar who where sat at the same time as me were leaving and my main meal had yet to arrive. The bread/crust was thick, not to my liking but it still tasted fresh. It can definitely use more sauce. That sauce tastes amazing on the joshua j pizza. Though, every thing ordered needed more seasoning. Lol. Right after I questioned the food being ordered; i was told the kitchen was backed up. The Moscow Mule was great! This pizza is the real deal, a home run. The family and some friends stopped here for dinner after Zoo Boo, everything was closed there and we needed some grub. We were seated as a group of 8 outside on a Friday with no wait (yeah!). The decor, inside and out, is very cool. I want to sit in one of those comfy looking couch/booths! The outside has long elevated tables with TVs spread around, and heaters above that made it pretty tolerable. And the view is really cool out to the streets. Service is very attentive without being intrusive. Our server was on top of everything, brought what we needed without having to ask. We decided to get the antipasto salad and MWL pizza. It came pretty quickly, and the salad was really tasty. It does have a dressing that's a little different, so you might want it on the side. I liked it, one of my daughters didn't. Shout Out to Como's for coming through in a big way! We were having a party at a venue nearby and wanted our guests to enjoy Ferndale's Local Favorite. I spoke with Eric who was amazing! He organized the catering and even delivered the food. What I appreciated the most, he was knowledgeable, offered suggestions, and truly kept me on a budget for such a large crowd. Our guests had a wonderful time and food is so important. So many people commented on how delicious the meatballs were and the deep dish pizzas were a huge hit. We served the Joshua J with jalapeños, honey, pepperoni, the Granny with caramelized onion, mushrooms, and pepperoni, and the Margherita with marinated tomatoes, basil pesto and fresh mozzarella. Como's isn't in my repertoire of go-to places in Ferndale, but after coming here for the second time last night...I'm starting to think that maybe it should be! There isn't a better location in downtown Ferndale than Como's. It's located right on the corner of Woodward and 9 Mile in the HEART of downtown! I can't even begin to count the number of times I've driven past the giant Como's sign that lights up brilliantly at night, and somehow I have only come here twice in the last 2 years! The first time was when the pandemic restrictions on outdoor dining at restaurants lifted and my friends and I came to dine on Como's dog-friendly patio. It was an extremely hot day, so I think I only got a salad and some guac, so not much that stood out here other than the beautifully designed patio! So imagine my surprise when I walked into Como's last night to find that the interior space of Como's is also STUNNINGLY designed as well! It's truly a dream and fit perfectly with my aesthetic, so I instantly felt comforted and cozy in there. They were super busy, but we managed to snag some seats at the bar and ordered our food. Como's menu was basically 2 pages with 1 extra page for beverages and another extra page for brunch, which is available on weekends. So given that it was dinner, it was just the two pages and you know what?! I appreciate a small menu! It's often times the mark of a good restaurant because they have their tried and true staples and don't feel the need to be iterating extensively upon them! I looked around and it appeared that a *lot* of people were eating pizza, and given that a quarter of the whole menu was dedicated to pizza, I figured this was the right move! I can now confirm that YES it was the right move indeed! Como's does Detroit-style pizza and they do it well! True, my pizza was overwhelmingly greasy, but it was SO GOOD regardless! I got the Jessy's Girl, which had basil, pesto, bacon, and arugula on it and it was *chefs kiss*. My friend got the Joshua J, which he said was also delicious! We both got small pizzas, which came with 4 square slices and a small pizza from Como's is more than enough for one person to eat for 2 meals or for 2 people to share! A friend of mine is gluten free, and I've heard great things about Como's gluten free pizza. I made a reservation and we were seated very quickly on the patio. A few years ago the service was just crazy, which again, I understand restaurants are so busy. The service and food this time were great and the atmosphere was really nice. The renovations make the patio the perfect outside situation for the warm weather. We waited for our table at the bar and sipped on our cocktails. The staff was friendly and they didn't even nudge us when it was time to close up the restaurant --we were the last customers seated in the patio. Everyone ordered different items from the menu and we all sampled each other's food--everything was delicious. I had a pizza with pepperoni, mushrooms and onions, and the other entrees were chicken tenders, fries and cheeseburger. It is warm and inviting and the staff was incredible nice...especially as our toddler screamed with glee every time a person walked by, but followed that with throwing her water, fries, or crayons as if we were playing a game. What I believe to be the manager checked on us a couple times and made sure everything we had was perfect and our server, cannot remember her name but she had rainbow hair! Was very attentive and knowledgeable of the menu items. It was our first time there so we asked for recommendations. We ordered the rotating beer on tap which was delicious, crisp and cold. We also ordered wings, kids chicken tenders and fries and the Granny Pizza. I ate more of the chicken tenders than my daughter - they were panko crusted I think, the best I've ever had when ordering her food and only $8. The Granny Pizza came out piping hot and soooo good - a really nice ratio of sauce to cheese to toppings that I find is hard to get in Detroit style pizza. Had a great time visiting Comos and trying the different pizzas! We split two large pizzas between 4 total along with an appetizer, and it was a the perfect amount. The fried cheese ravioli are classic and would recommend for an appetizer -- savory, tasty, and the right amount of spice. For the pizzas we tried the dill pickle pizza, the wimp, and jessy's girl. If you are a pickle lover would highly recommend the pickle pizza, but I know it is not everyone's cup of tea. All of it was fabulous! It's a good old, greasy Detroit style pizza, but the crust is awesome and everything has a unique flare. It was just one of those Ferndale Nights where EVERYBODY was out to eat and not a seat was open at any restaurant nearby. It was a brick cold night too, with the wind whipping while we were running around trying to find a place to eat. So was Como's a forced pick? Yes. Was I pleasantly surprised? Yesssir. I ain't been to this joint since it's infamous shutdown, but I've always noticed how nicely it'd been renovated and always wanted to sit at their glowing corner patio. Not tonight, dictated the weather, but the inside was just as cozy and inviting. A decent beer menu called our names and what's its best companion? Pizza! It's all Detroit-style deep dish, which I totally did not know upon ordering but oh well. I set the bar low as far as expectations go, and to my excitement, the pizza definitely pole-vaulted over that! The crust was nicely cheesy and not too thick, the worst offense a DSDDP (Detroit-style Deep Dish Pizza, the acronym is a thing but probs not) could ever do. Some of the pepperoni was nice and cuppy, others thick and toothsome. Either way they were delicious! The garlic, basil, and sliced Calabrian chiles were a nice touch, but the heart of this pizza, and pretty much any pizza, is the sauce. It was a tasty, tomatoey concoction, perfectly complimentary to the rest of the pizza. It was balanced, slightly sweet, and tangy too. I come here often - it's one of Ferndale's shining restaurants. While I typically bring large groups here for brunch + mimosa towers, dinner is also a great option. The food is warm, tasty and consistent. My favorite meal in Ferndale was their Cubano pizza - it seems that they took it off their menu in the past month unfortunately. I tried the wings last night. They were well seasoned and had a good amount of sauce. My friends also enjoyed their salads, margarita pizza, and burger. The staff is always friendly. They accommodate large groups fairly quickly. Damn, I'm totally bummed to see COMO's clocking in with anything lower than a four star because my friends and I absolutely loved it. As an out of towner I asked my local tour guide (an old friend and lifelong "Detroiter") took us here because he was showing off Ferndale and suggested that they make a good version of Detroit-style pizza. While I've had it before, my fellow travelers were about to take their first few bites of a style of pizza that they'd never had before. They loved it. Omgosh...Yesterday' we had a celebratory lunch on the patio at Comos. It was our grandson's 4th birthday. We had a fairly large group, three children and 10 adults. Melinda was assigned to our tables. She was masterful at making sure we had the best possible experience. She is a gem and was incredibly kind and caring to all of us The food was hot and delicious! We had a variety: breakfast dishes, chicken tenders, sandwiches and more. So yummy! And the Bloody Mary's were off the chart. The best I ever had, seriously!!! Aaron, the solo singer/guitarist, was the patio performer. What a beautiful voice and a great guy. We loved his music/incredibly talented! This is my first time ever at como's. I've passed it a billion times. They have a really nice patio area with space heater for those chilly nights. They practiced social distancing very well. All staff wore masks. The staff was very friendly. Shout out to the host. He was amazing and friendly. Super accommodating. My friend accidentally knocked over her drink and the host went to the bar and got her a new one. Super sweet. The wait staff was slow to get to us but since we were where the host was, he helped us a lot. He made this experience very awesome for us. I would say food is decent. I would probably just get the pizza and fries here. Appetizers are decent here. Normal "bar" food I would say. The pizza has such unique names. It's cute. Arriving was cool, but when you're singled out for being black is BEYOND annoying. We were a party of 3, 2 women and a child. Luckily this was a friend yet it was still a business meeting and very disappointing to say the least. We were sat in the middle of the place and the baby received NO Baby chair yet we watched another lighter skin couple come in and their child received a baby seat/booster chair as well as child menu and typical kid stuff. Went here Friday October 27th. Pizza needed more red sauce and was not worth the price point, I remember the pizza being better here before. Bar took forever to prepare the adult beverages for our table, I think they forgot about our drinks until the waitress reminded them. Waitress took forever to bring the to-go boxes. My husband's Cobb salad and our chicken wings with dry rub and blue cheese were very good. The server was friendly, but she did not come back to check on us to see if we needed anything until after we finished eating our Cobb salad and burger, so I was never able to get mustard for my burger. Our empty appetizer plates and napkins sat stacked up on the table, with napkins blowing off in the wind until I retrieved them. When I realized that we didn't have any silverware, I saw that other tables were stocked with silverware, rolled in nice napkins. Obviously we had been seated before the table was prepped, and we were not provided with silverware until I picked it up myself. The server did not ask how I would like my burger cooked, and it was overly well done and dry as toast. Maybe someone else will have better luck, but the next time we come to see a show at the Magic Bag, we will eat somewhere else. read more
