This place is amazing. I finished up here in the fall and I still use lessons I learned here daily. The staff were incredible! I could take the time to call out each department, but I would get repetitive. The program, faculty, and the facilities themselves were nothing short of amazing. To top all of that off they created such a welcoming environment that it made healing easier. My first day I was nervous and was immediately welcomed by both the staff and other patients. Compass has changed noticably. It is not client focused. As I said on google: I was discharged for reasons that are benign (admitted to having a lapse, but changed course within the week). Looking back where I'm at now, the way they discharged me was very harsh and unethical, perhaps illegal. The program is not the same as when I first attended. The focus now is shame. Don't accept parts of yourself, change them, or meld them, or work with them. NO - accept yourself. They make you feel intrinsically flawed. Um, eugenics? It's become very academic, sterile, and arrogant. read more

When I was thirteen, I was admitted to Compass for s*lf harm and depression. I was terrified because it was my first time receiving help for my worsening mental health issues, and the staff did not help. This was years ago, I am currently eighteen, however based on the reviews I am reading that are more recent than mine, it seems nothing has changed. I was openly shamed for relapsing and not using my resources. We would learn the same coping skills every single day, even though most of us knew them like the back of our hands and needed something more. The therapists were like babysitters and they were harsh and cruel and I remember feeling ashamed for having urges. I never used my resources because I literally could not. Not to mention after I was released, the center did not help us find a therapist or another program to lean on. I was released prematurely, they all knew I was not stable enough to be done, but they couldn't do anything else. I believe this center failed me and truly does not deserve to be praised for their care for teenagers. read more

Their bias towards substance abuse really showed in my treatment, to the point where a severely important aspect of my mental health was completely glossed over. As a result of this bias, I did not receive proper care until the final week of my treatment. I was told it was probably bad for me that I realized my substance abuse was a symptom of trauma, and not the other way around. I would only recommend if you want something slightly more intensive than AA for masochists. read more

This review is regarding the Mental Health, Pain, and Illness Management program. If you're newly diagnosed with chronic pain/illness and have never received any type of support or education--then this program might be beneficial for you. However, if you've had your illness for a while and have a support system in place, then I'm not sure it will be all that helpful. The program capitalizes on *basic* management techniques such as the spoon theory, relationships, meditation, and endless amounts of acronyms. I saw the diagnoses listed online and felt hopeful that there would be specialized knowledge & support for my conditions. In the end, the program ultimately felt like a cash cow for an untapped population. While the classroom environment was accommodating itself (heating pads, snacks, ice packs, etc), the program was was mostly young counselors without any prior knowledge of chronic illness, who received a rudimentary training from compass upon hire (I asked my therapist after noting several red flags). Having both chronic & mental illness can be incredibly complex, and it requires specialized care, treatment, and medication management. I want to clarify that there's nothing wrong with being young & recently out of school, but the providers that were assigned me to clearly didn't have the necessary skills to manage my conditions. The psychiatrist and therapist assigned to me clearly did not have the ability to understand my needs either. The psychiatrist in particular was very critical of my medication, and made several comments that made me incredibly uncomfortable--which ultimately led to me discontinuing my care at compass. My current psychiatrist even tried to touch base about some of her commentary and never heard back. I want to reiterate that this was simply MY experience. I saw people in my program who clearly benefited from being there, and enjoyed the community of meeting other people with chronic pain. I'm fortunate enough to have a psychologist & psychiatrist outside of compass who I'm well-established with, who understand the nuances of my health. read more

I don't think I can say enough positive things about this program! My 9-year-old had to use their services and they were nothing but kind, compassionate and creative when figuring out a plan that would work. They were in touch with his outside providers and were always willing to have calls with us to deep dive into any issues. It is VERY hard to find compassionate, dedicated professionals in mental health and I think Compass has been an outstanding program for our family. We are so grateful for their services. Absolutely useless. I was put into group sessions with kids that were way too young for me to even be able to talk about my problems around. I was in the online IOP programs that I didn't even finish because I attempted suicide WHILE in the program. They try to teach you skills that you will likely not find useful for major issues. I recently had an incredibly positive experience with Compass Health Center Northbrook, and I wanted to share my gratitude and appreciation for the support they provided to my family. A few months ago, my child experienced a choking incident, which left him fearful of eating and swallowing. Understandably worried, we reached out to Compass Health Center in Northbrook seeking guidance and assistance. From the moment we made that call we had a kind, caring experience for our son. Within a few hours, Compass Health Center Northbrook reached out to us, showing genuine concern for our situation. The clinician we connected with listened to our story and helped us identify the right specialty level of care that he needed. Even though Compass wasn't the right type of program for us, they helped us anyway! I'm writing because these types of issues are scary as a family and knowing that an organization is committed to helping a child find the right place even if it isn't there place, mattered so much to us. As a professional, I can without question say that this is one of the most unprofessional health care 'practices' I have ever encountered. If this is the future of mental health service in this Country, I fear for our future. I mistakenly put my trust into Compass but learned fairly quickly that I had made a grave error in judgment. No one should have to endure the misinformation and shoddy practices I have endured in the four weeks since I have tried to seek help from them. Unfortunately the mental health system in this great nation is sorely lacking (or perhaps totally broken?). This company is not part of the solution but actually exacerbates the problem. Please beware and be careful about wasting time with anyone from Compass Health. Time is a finite resource. This company thinks nothing of wasting their customers time and insurance companies money. Notice I said customer even though I should have been able to use the word 'patient'. That is one of the fundamental issues, Compass sees their clients as customers not as patients. I hope that I can protect others from trusting Compass Health. They have truly been a colossal waste of time for my family and have consistently betrayed my fundamental trust. read more

I cannot thank Compass of Northbrook enough for their amazing care with our son (10 years old) and family. The communication was far beyond what we expected. During the virtual orientation, they stated that Compass wanted the family to call their emergency number if there was a problem or needing guidance. Little did we know that we would need that guidance that night. I was able to talk to my son's psychiatrist in the middle of the night and discuss options. My son's team was amazing. Dr. Womack, Hannah Zimmerman, Julie Maline, and the team are knowledgeable, communicate well, and are compassionate. Not only did our son grow, but we have also become better parents. My son just graduated from Compass, and it is bittersweet. We are over the moon that he is doing well but we will also miss the Compass team. read more

Finding care for my loved one was hard. Compass did not make it any easier. The pre-verification department was rude and difficult to work with. My insurance was not difficult but they could not figure it out. Tons of emails back and forth that were rude and so not helpful! The assessment was not any better. The therapist was cold, inexperienced and not compassionate. We are coming to you in a time of crisis. Help people, don't be rude. Be supportive. Found better care elsewhere! read more

Released all my psychological diagnosis to my job. 98 days in their Trauma program who's director is Courtney Wells. I have never had a therapist fail me more then her. I went to compass for help. Now my entire town knows every mental illness I have. I came for help they caused me more hurt and trauma. They broke HIPPA laws. They said they will do better next time. 19th program I took place in. Beth Chung is the only person who helped me the director of family program. Again, broke HIPPA laws and released all my psychological diagnosis to MY JOB! No lawyer to represent me. NO JUSTICE. MORE TRAUMA. Shame on you. I came for help and you have caused me more harm. Compass has really declined over the years. My eldest benefited from their multi-disciplined approach. The psych got her on the right meds within days of her starting program. The therapists were great and I couldn't have said enough good things about the transition resources she was given when she left. My youngest child who was there recently had the complete opposite experience. The psych refused to give her medication although he stated that she needed medication. The therapists she met with contradicted each other and we got little to no transition services (we were told to get anything we need from our outpatient team). She got zero benefit from her time there or the money we paid to get her the needed help. In fact, she became even more anxious from the time she was there feeling dismissed. Response to owner's response here: commenting on a public forum that you care about concerns looks good for the readers; however, I escalated my concerns to Compass leadership and you were no help to us. It is very chaotic and it feels like too many cooks in the kitchen ruining the dish. There's not a lot of clear communication with the treatment team. This family therapist doesn't listen worth a damn and talks over people and does the condescending broken record bit. The billing part seems to lose papers a lot. The medicine part of the team drags its feet on doing anything at a reasonable time. Some of the therapists are competent, but so many are a bit dull and just read from a script. There's no actual art therapist so they just improvise and it's pointless and annoying. read more

All the staff were 20 somethings who clearly are there to get experience on their resume and leave after 1-2 years unless they get promoted to a director position. At the beginning the cost of treatment was much less than what I actually ended up paying. For 5 weeks it costs $10,000. I didn't learn anything I didn't already know from past individual therapy sessions and could learn online. I only spent 5 minutes with psychiatric nurse practitioner and yet was charged over $300 each visit which was not included in the costs we were given before treatment started. In terms of family therapist and individual therapist all they told me was go on medication and didn't actually provide any individual therapy. Part of therapy was art therapy which was making collages. Complete waste of money and the people there ended up causing me more anxiety instead of less. They dismissed every symptom I had and made me accommodate them more than they accommodated me. read more

I was a patient at Compass' teen program; I had a very difficult experience. I've never had a stronger feeling of being pushed through a mental health meat grinder. I will say one thing--I was satisfied with the group therapy aspect in that I could talk with other patients about our problems. However, I'm sure there are better places that also offer group therapy. My strongest complaint--teens in obviously abusive situations were repeatedly told to just consider the parents' side. Unless parents were regularly beating a child, the staff didn't seem to care. The psychiatrists are extremely overworked. I get the feeling that they have heavy caseloads. The same goes for other employees. Although they obviously cared about their work, they didn't have time to learn about my individual issues. I (and a few others I met) felt like I was being pushed through a machine. Their one-size-fits-all, fast-paced 6-week program didn't work for me. read more

I honestly have no idea where to begin with our experience. At first, everyone seemed competent. We met for an intake and I described the behaviors my son exhibited at his school setting in detail, including aggression and property destruction. I explained my concerns that medication focused on stimulants and described the medications we had tried (guanfacine, Ritalin, Vyvanse) and how they only made him tired. I explained we saw no problem behavior at home. I said my ongoing concern is that his father and I seem to be dismissed when working with professionals. Day 2 I received a phone call staying my son was "very dysregulated." I said yes, that's why I had enrolled him in the Child Dysregulated Behavior PHP. They suggested he might not be a good fit for their program. I asked where would be. We ended the conversation with instructions to start him on Adderall, another stimulant. At our "family therapy" session I was informed they felt that "50-75% of his behaviors were behavioral." Today, his 5th day in the program, I received a call that he was "tolerating the Adderall well." I asked if this meant it was helping his behavior. Oh no, he's been in the quiet room four times. They told me they were prepared to discharge but he could come tomorrow if I wanted him to have one more day. This program was supposed to be a short term stabilization program. Instead, I am left feeling as though we paid through insurance a lot of money to trial yet another stimulant and have yet another group of people wash their hands of my child. I have no idea what type of children this program benefits or who would be a good good fit, but it certainly didn't benefit mine in any possible way. I am disappointed I wasted time, money and energy trying to help my child here. read more

This center paints a great picture when you're enrolling, but doesn't follow through on much. Group classes, group sharing, hardly any one-on-one with doctors.... I was told we would be out-of-pocket approx $1000 for one week, and I was sent a bill for $2200. It's impossible to get anyone to help with the billing. The classes were totally ineffective and just a big waste of time and money. So disappointed!! read more

I've read the negative reviews - can't speak to the teen/adolescent program or referrals highlighted in one of them - but the grade school team is fantastic and the only referrals we received were to licensed therapists in our insurance network. read more

However, to know our son was in a safe and nurturing environment gave us a piece of mind that we so desperately needed during that time. Watching the progress he has made is truly a blessing for our family. The team taught my son how to deal, understand, and cope with his anxiety/depression. They helped him understand he was not alone in this journey and reassured him that he would be ok. The coping tools they provided will definitely help him for years to come. I am so incredibly thankful to the staff at Compass Health Center. My 9 year old boy has been an anxious mess at school which have been exhibited through aggression. Compass took him in and guided him through the good,bad and ugly. Most of his days at the program were positive but when he did have unexpected behaviors they helped guide him out of it and assisted in process and recovery. He has never felt so connected and taken care of as he does at Compass. The staff is truly remarkable and never gives up on these kids. I feel so lucky that my son was given the opportunity to work on himself in such a kind, warm, therapeutic environment. read more

I don't have the words to express my gratitude to everyone at Compass. They truly make you feel like family and get you back on the right track as quick as possible. The group therapists are fantastic and bring an honesty and humor to the program that is much appreciated. And they care about each individual and there are no judgements. The whole team they put together is awesome. I went kicking and screaming into the program and after my time there I didn't want to leave. It felt like home. And because of the family therapy that I was "nudged" into participating in, I was able to reconnect with my sister. And the skills we learned has helped us both through a recent family crisis that I don't think would have been possible without the Compass intervention. Even the front office staff was great. The entire staff at Compass was incredible. The in-take and admin staff really helped us feel supported with compassion when we were in crisis mode. The Child Dysregulated program taught our son and us as parents great CBT and DBT skills that were easy to implement when anxiety was high. Have a family therapist, assistant director and a psychiatrist working as a team really helped us learn more about our son's ADHD and anxiety and what medications would help improve it while giving him tools to cope. read more

This disaster of a "health center" committed dangerous malpractice against me. I was in the adolescent program and they discharged me when I repeatedly told them I was not ready, and sent me back to college when I knew and was vocal about it being a bad idea. I lasted 2 weeks at school after discharge and had to come back home and go into residential treatment. Upon my discharge (as I told them repeatedly I was not ready to discharge), John at the Northbrook location, wrote on my discharge paperwork that I did not report suicidal ideation. He did not ask me if I was experiencing suicidal ideation. Had he asked me, I would have said that I WAS experiencing suicidal ideation. This place is an expensive load of crap, gaslights patients, and does significantly more harm than good. I have spent years of therapy processing the trauma that I endured at the hands of the sorry excuse for clinicians at compass. read more
