I remember seeing this place back in the late 80s. It turns out it's been here since 1957. It's a very nice neighborhood grocery store. It's clean, and everybody was friendly and helpful. For a neighborhood market, they have a good selection. You can get regular or organic produce, (they have six different kinds of apples.) groceries are the same, everything from regular groceries to gourmet items. they have a decent sized liquor and wine section, as well. They also have a pizza restaurant attached. Prices are higher than some of the other stores out there, but hey... It's a higher end neighborhood store. I get it. I got what I needed. Nice shop, I agree it has a vintage or "quaint" feel. Helpful staff, clean, organized, well-stocked. I would have bought more but the prices are significantly higher than I expected. I am from Chicago, but even in our poshest grocery stores back home the prices aren't this high. I usually buy cans of Amy's Soup for $3-4, but they are nearly $6.50 here. A case of 12 Diet Cokes was $9.99, about $3 more than I spend at home, even when not on sale. The fresh fruit looked good, but the prices were so high I only bought 1 peach, 1 banana, and 1 apricot. I love that this is a neighborhood shop, and there was an impressive selection of imported blackberry and blackcurrant jams- and so many peanut butters, too- but the prices are much too high for me to return. read more

I can't say enough good things about this place. Pre-Covid we went on a regular basis for dinner. The burgers were delicious, as were the flautas and the kiddo liked the chicken strips. They had wine, beer and food tastings from local businesses. Their smoked bbq meat was heat as well. Oh and the soups too! Insider tip: order at the bar, rather than the deli counter, and your meal comes with a beer or very full glass of wine. During Covid, they had crates of eggs from local restaurants at times when you couldn't find eggs at other stores. They also had many other supplies that were scarce at other stores. They support the community and do fundraisers for the middle school up the street. They have products from local bakeries, coffee, meat products, wineries, breweries, farms and more. This market is a gem. Buried in a neighborhood where there are few commercial establishments, it serves several needs of the neighborhood. The groceries it offers goes beyond the standard. They carry many more unique products and items made locally such as Grateful Bread products. I like wandering the aisles looking for items I don't often see in the average grocery. Before Covid, the market offered an Indian buffet and salad bar. It hasn't returned yet. However, they do have prepared Indian food togo in the chill case near the meat case. We've tried the spinach paneer. It is good with a spicy kick. Willy's Cafe is another neat part about this market. Again pre-Covid, they offered burgers and other hot foods. They haven't brought that back, yet. The bar is open and there is outdoor seating for patrons of the market. The deli is open and you can eat at their outdoor seating. Finally, the cherry on top for this market is that they have Gunther's ice cream. It's at the deli. They always carry 6-8 flavors. How great is that?! We come to this market sometimes just for lunch so we can cap it off with some Gunther's ice cream. read more

Compton's Market is a complete throwback to a time when a small, non-chain neighborhood market was the norm, not the exception. It's hidden away in a neighborhood where very few outsiders would actually visit, giving it a truly neighborhood feel. Best of all, though, it's actually a great market with a lot of solid offerings and brands you might not even find at the chain stores, making it convenient on top of everything else. I've never done a full shopping trip here because it is more expensive. Just like Corti Bros., it's more a speciality store with higher prices where only the rich can afford to load up their refrigerator. But I have stopped in for the occasional odds and ends, like coffee, baked goods, dairy, health food brands and produce. For the most part the selection is excellent and the brands quality and whenever possible local. Best of all, there's always a friendly clerk around to help me find items or check me out. The one area I've been told to visit and haven't yet is the cafe. Apparently they serve up some real in-house goodies here like soup during the winter months. This being the time of COVID, I'll have to make it a point to have that experience on a future return trip. read more

Willy's Cafe is a SCAM?! Check your order BEFORE you leave! I recently drove by this place and was later impressed by the pictures of their food on Yelp and Google. I love small, locally owned gourmet shops - LOVE THEM! But if the pictures do not speak to the unbelievable RIP OFF my sandwich was, then we are all lost. In hindsight, all the good pictures are over two years old. The sandwich was supposed to be a French Dip. It costs $10. Mine had literally 2 RAZOR THIN SLICES OF ROAST BEEF. I am not a fan of negative reviews, but I feel this is just a terrible bait-and-switch, even if it was only a $5 sandwich, but can I remind you that IT WAS $10? I am guessing that either the guy that made my gourmet French Dip ATE THE REST, or this place is on its way out of business. This is just an unacceptable amount of meat for $10; it was definitely not more than an ounce of meat. 2 razor thin slices of meat + 2 slices of provolone = $10?! I recently started a new job in the area and was looking for a place to purchase groceries and/or lunch at. I came across this quaint neighborhood market on Google Maps and just knew I had to check it out. It reminds me of Corti Brothers on Folsom Blvd. It's just another gem in East Sacramento. I literally walked down every aisle taking note of what was available for future purchases or items I want to try. I was amazed at their selection and believe they may carry a better selection of beer, liquor, snacks, pasta, coffee, frozen foods and produce than most neighborhood markets in Sacramento (above Corti too). *The parking lot is decently sized for the size of the market. **Willy's Cafe and Bar is attached to this venue. I didn't check that out but thought it was pretty cool how the Cafe prepares meals for the Market to sell. read more

So Disappointed. First time to Compton's Market and Willie's cafe. Very nice old time store and friendly clerks. Went there for coffee with a young friend. Pleasant bartender said they don't serve coffee; just beer, wine and sandwiches. So we left. Compton's has saved us during the pandemic. Having a small local grocer near by that we can pick up essentials at or walk to for dessert has been so wonderful. They also were quick to put a required mask sign up and have been fully stocked with sanitizers, etc the whole time. Compton's deli is great too. The breakfast sandwiches are delicious. Their booze selection is GREAT. Good wines, extensive local beer and an array of liquor (also a life saver during lockdown ) Good produce as well with organic selection. I've always found their staff helpful and kind. If there is more than one person waiting to get checked out they open another checkout line. 5/5 Compton's. I had a breakfast panini the other day. First time. It was really good, though a little sloppy so next time, I will ask for less sauce (mayo?). I asked for medium crispy bacon they did it perfectly. Rude staff (Bar Tenders) that would rather spread lies and gossip about the the customers' and the neighborhood rather then do their job! I've been moonlighting as a lyft driver on sporadic nights and weekends, and East Sacramento is one of my spots where I lie in wait for potential passengers while the rest of the vultures circle midtown. It's become really convenient to have a bathroom until 9 or so at night, as well as a place for healthy snacks, replenishing water, tasty egg rolls, maybe some olives to snack on, and sometimes, even a smile! I've since been back to collect craft beer and wine while NOT on the clock, mind you. Or on the App, as it were. They certainly don't have everything, and the parking lot is a confirmed spot for the elderly who still dream of placing in Daytona, as other, funnier reviewers have commented on. This is a cute little neighborhood market. I like that they carry lots of organic items and items from local businesses such as Consious Creamery. The aisles are very narrow which make it difficult if you have a grocery cart. I recommend a hand basket if you just need a few things. Prices are fairly high but you can get some good deals. Overall I recommend it for quick shopping trips but I don't do my main weekly shopping here typically. read more

A wonderful community grocery store in East Sacramento. Been here for an awful long time and certainly a nice asset in the area. It's kind of like a small old time store. Staff is friendly and if you need something on a quick in and out basis, a good place to go. Also I have a little bar and community gathering spot recently added in the last few years. One good thing is they look like they do a pretty good business which should facilitate the store remaining in our community for a very long time. I love this place and everything they do. read more

Old East Sac's longtime grocer - now updated and yuppified. Yup, get all the ingredients to make the latest recipe that Rachel Ray, Mario Batali or the Barefoot Contessa challenged you with last nite! When I need a little can of anchovies, just one container of sliced parmesan, 1 six pack, Compton's always saves me! There's always hot coffee, later in the a.m. they start the soup counter; and, they like to hear what their customers want them to carry. Not as cheap as Trader Joe's, but super-convenient for some! We love you Compton's! Oh, by the way...can you say "easy parking?" When I'm not in the mood to be patient, waiting for a parking place at Trader Joe's Folsom Blvd., this is for sure where you'll find me. Always a spot, right in front. It's such a luxury to have a market walking distance to your house that has just about everything you need. High quality produce and a decent meat and beer selection too. I've never had a bad experience with any of the staff either. So many complaints on here about the prices like people don't realize you have to pay a bit more at a neighborhood shop. If you don't want to spend a bit more for the convenience of not having to deal with a jam-packed parking lot and long lines then by all means go to a big chain store. read more

The photos here seem to really only focus on their alcohol selection. Compton's is a nice little market to quickly pick up little things here & there you might find yourself out off in your kitchen. Prices are a tad high, but it's not a big box chain so they're not able to get those reduced prices from suppliers so I understand. Customer service is good. Compton's Market in McKinley is my go to place for groceries. I've shopped at the market since the early 90s. I live three blocks away and go there nearly every day. I could save a few dollars at Safeway or SaveMart but I want to keep my McKinley Park neighborhood alive and vibrant so I'm willing to pay a little more for that. Part of the neighborhood's charm is the small stores and shops that are within walking distance of home, places like Compton's, Shear 'n Style, Celestin's, Willy's Café, the barbershop off D Street and the gym there, Selland's Market Café, Lotto Liquors, East Sac Dry Cleaners, Nopalitos. All these small businesses owned by families in our area are what make it what it is. I support them. *This is the important part of my review: The new owners of Comptons have put a lot of money and hard work into building the business. They care about making it a success. I'm shocked when I read the negative reviews on Yelp. It makes me think there is a small activist group in the neighborhood trying to harm their business. They are great people and if they don't have an item you can ask them for it. The only downside is their shelf space is very limited compared to a modern supermarket like Raley's or Bel Air. Ignore the negative reviews. My suspicion is there are one or two people with an ax to grind and they are using different ID's to make it seem like a lot of customers are unhappy. The parking lot is always full at 5 pm and there is always a crowd at Willy's on a Friday afternoon. That's a sign the neighborhood loves Comptons. read more
