It's like a page from Food & Wine magazine...which, should pay a visit to Fully Belly Farm if they haven't already. I won't go too far into what they do here as their website does a much better job than anything I could piece together in the midst of this food hangover. Check out their website for info on their history, their CSA, and their monthly farm dinners, etc. When you arrive, you might be greeted by the sweet face of Mister (or is it Mr.?), one of the many farm dogs located on this beautiful farm. There's a lovely little table set up under a shade tree, with beverage options such as wine, beer, tea, and fresh watermelon water with mint...So refreshing and perfect. And it just gets better from there. On the evening a crowd of dear friends and I joined complete strangers at perfectly set picnic tables, the menu went a little something like this: Seared pork belly with plum glaze: so incredibly delectable that I tried to describe how good it was three times and failed. The meat was spicy and sweet, and the glaze...I'd like a bowl of it to dip bread in. An unbelievably perfect start to the evening. Summer squash and ricotta tart: Fresh squash like I've never tasted, and a buttery crust so flaky we found ourselves just eating little pieces of it right off the plate while waiting for the next course. Tomato, eggplant, and basil stack: if my parents had been able to feed me tomatoes like this when I was a kid, it wouldn't have taken me 20 years to like whole tomatoes. Thee best and sweetest tomatoes I have ever had. Perfectly paired with eggplant and fresh basil...I could have eaten an entire platter of these stacks myself. Whole egg pasta w/wild boar ragout and early girl tomatoes: the freshest homemade pasta paired with a deliciously tender wild boar and more sweet tomatoes...At this point I was so full but just couldn't stop myself...I put my utensils down twice in an attempt to pace myself but kept picking them up and ended up cleaning the plate. Crimson sweet and orchid watermelon salad with mint and feta: a palate cleanser that like all the courses before, was impossible to stop eating! The meal could have ended here; I've never had watermelon so sweet and tender. Upside down brown sugar plum cake with crème fraiche: okay...I will be honest. This cake was delicious, but I'm the kind of person who thinks everything needs ice cream...so, while this was really delicious...I of course wish it had been served with a big scoop of homemade ice cream, but...you can't have it all. Truly, everything we ate was absolutely amazing. The setting could not have been more brilliant; everyone who worked/cooked/served/grew the food was welcoming and you could see how passionate they were about the farm and its operations. From those various farm dogs, to the casually yet perfectly set tables, right down to the speakeasy jazzy music coming from the outdoor kitchen, these people really have their act together. If you're looking to do something outside of Sacramento and want an evening to remember, I highly recommend attending one of Full Belly Farm's monthly dinners. You will not be disappointed and will have an unbelievable experience to share with friends. Salute!

The root veggie box was pretty cool - it made me step out of my comfort zone with my cooking. I made mashed celery root and that was amazing! There's 3 types of potatoes. The veggie mix box is my favorite. There's asparagus, zucchini, mushrooms, etc! All stuff I love. The most recent box I picked up was the Italian inspired. It has several bunchs of herbs, herb oil, parmesan, burrata - I think the one thing i am disappointed in the tiny thing of burrata. Other than that, I am pretty happy. If you go to pick it up at their location on Belvedere, they are very good at following social distancing protocols. We picked it up at Alaro Brewing this past time. It was easy peasy, and we went and got take out while we were there too. They open early and close at 2:00 weekdays, 5-1 Saturdays and 6-9 on Sundays. 4 plantains will cost you between 3 and 4 dollars. They are a good size, not as big as you see in Puerto Rico but better than most supermarkets. I guess this is where restaurants get their supply from. I cooked 1 of the 2 ripe plantains last night and they were perfect.

Shout out for West Sacramento…read more... Dave's Fresh Produce Stand is an open air farm stand in West Sacramento. I was in the area buying fresh crabs at the Ferrari Fisheries pop up stand which was down the road... a few minutes drive. So I popped on over to Dave's. But wait a minute, the stand used to be named Vierra Farms. Same place, different name. Déjà vu. The stand sells fruits, vegetables, fresh cut flowers, local Becker honey, packaged dried fruit, frozen filleted fish from Ferrari Fisheries, and a variety of animal feed ( for horses, rabbits, guinea pigs, etc). The product pricing is on par with a grocery store or possibly cheaper; the quality is way better than my local grocer. I bought mandarins, onions, bell peppers, leafy lettuce, beets, and a flower. The flowers were $3 a stem. The produce looked all so gorgeous and fresh and tasted great.

My friend invited me to a yoga…read moreclass being held at Winn park and I wasn't sure what to expect but as in a lot of my other reviews I was pleasantly surprised. When we arrived there was a large group of about 40 or so people with mats on the grass a little distance from a small farmers market at the opposite end of the park. The instructor was kind and clear in her direction and I also appreciated her pace. Sometimes yoga instructors can have me thinking "if I don't get out of this pretzel twist my legs might never un-numb!" But not this instructor, she kept movements flowing but not so quick that you couldn't follow along. I also liked the difficulty level. I felt that every part I was giving the perfect amount of effort and when I was just about done, it was then conveniently time for shavasana (resting pose) which I fell asleep in. After the yoga practice I was quite hungry so me and my friend looked around the market a bit. It was all very peaceful with the setting sun casting a golden shimmer on the park and the sound of a gentle breeze and live music. Some people stood in lines to get food while others put blankets on the ground to enjoy the music. I headed for the food. At one stand there were samples of different dips and we got a couple to take home. I think I will be back for yoga again:)

Honestly, I first started going because Mud Pie Vegan Bakery would be there and then I'd find other gems like Boone's Pickled Onions.. Mud Pie has since ventured into opening their own brick and mortar and although it's not the same.. it's a nice stroll through the park and take a looksee at what's there. Some vendors aren't there consistently but when I miss them one week and find them another time-- it's a treat. Seeing new vendors-- also a treat It's something to do or a place to grab some food on Wednesday afternoon if you're around.

Urban farming...who knew??…read more I sure as hell didn't! My first experience, and hopefully not my last, was while volunteering at the Autumn Equinox Celebration a few weekends ago. I generally associate Hurley avenue with The Kitchen, the street to the mall, the movie theaters, a bunch of random big box stores/shops...not where I'd find a hidden oasis of urban farming! I can't really review the farming situation, because what I saw was a decked out landscape of food tasting, booze drinking, social responsible being group of people who were supporting an underground culture of urban farming. A friend asked if I'd like to volunteer at this event. Sure, I don't mind donating my services to a good cause. This BY FAR is the most underrated event in Sacramento. I almost don't want to yelp about it, so it stays cool and awesome - but they do cap it off, so get in where you fit in. Every good eatery on the grid and in the Handle district is here. Even some of the good spots off of the grid were here too. There was plenty of food for everyone and booze, no short supply of anything. Unlike most events, IF you even had to wait in a line, it was less than five minutes. The whole event was also "no waste"! For those of you who don't speak hippie, this means no trash was created - we used mini wine glasses, plastic plates, and silverware. The vendors generally just plated everything on your plate, with the exception of a few vendors. Those that did use a serving dish, were made of bamboo or something hippieish of the sorts. After volunteering and consuming their food and booze (this was okayed by the volunteer lead), I realized that I want to volunteer at their actual farm in Rancho Cordova. This event made me want to volunteer my time to their efforts, it is a great non-profit. Everyone was so warm and inviting, and genuinely nice - from the staffers, the other volunteers, the vendors, and the celebrators, not one person had a bad attitude. I am now a believer...I'm ready to get down on some urban farming!
