I spilled some beer on my MacBook and the keyboard was going haywire. Their team was able to fix it by replacing the top case. After a few days a key felt a bit faulty. I brought it back in, they acknowledged the issue and completely replaced the top case again with no hassle at all and took off a bit from the final price for the second visit. We are so lucky to have this store, which has been around for decades. I had one of the technicians come to my home today to set up my computer, printer, monitor, etc etc. He did a great job. It was complicated, but he figured it out. What was especially fantastic is that he brought with him all the of the equipment (for instance, wires and adapters) that I needed. Good communication on the phone. That info exhange set us on replacing the old hard drive with an SSD on the ol' iMac. Estimated service time given during phone call was OK. Actual service time, Much, much faster. It was ready the next day. The only challenge might be parking unless you're bringing in something heavy tower or desktop sized. We lucked out at drop off and pick up to get the iMac in to them. My Macbook Pro's USB-C ports were starting to go; one wouldn't work at all, and the other was glitchy. All the computer places that I called in here San Rafael told me either that this wasn't fixable or that they didn't work on hardware. Thought I might need a new phone since the port on my iPhone 6 stopped working well -- I needed to put the cable in ever so carefully, at a very slight angle for it to work. Apple told me it could cost $300 to fix and that they wouldn't know till they took it and I had to authorize them in advance. The guy behind the counter took a look, determined the problem was simply too much lint built up in the port, and had it completely fixed in 60 seconds. I asked to pay, he refused. The people who work here are pros who know what they are doing. In essence, my 2009 MacBook began dying because the memory hard drive was full. It took up to 10 minutes for my computer to start up when I would turn it on. I began considering buying a newer laptop, but I like my Mac and I don't have the funds to buy a new one. I callled M.A.C. and asked if they could increase my memory drive to which they said "yes". I brought my MacBook in on a Wednesday at 2pm and got it back on Friday. They told me it was a processor issue and it would be too much to fix and I should just buy another computer. Then took my $40 diagnostic fee. I was so satisfied that no other store could have fixed my MacBook Air that I was thrilled to pay them an extra $40 for completely fixing my computer's complicated problem. As a long-time customer (I bought both my MacBook Air's from them), they have even been able to help me over the phone on some occasions (that weren't hardware issues). I run Parallels and Windows 7 Pro in order to use QuickBooks & Word Perfect. This makes for some complicated software issues at times. read more

I've worked with computers for 15 years, and I've been to the full range of computer stores - from build-it-yourself parts warehouse to Fry's to Circuit City. And M.A.C has the honor of being the positively rudest place I have ever set foot in. One time I went here looking for a simple power strip. Their selection was pretty poor. When I asked if they carried the Power Squid (an item which retails for around $20 online), they said it would cost $60. I laughed and left. The last time I was there (and I do mean the *last* time), upon asking the clerk for a part I was looking for, I was subject to a condescending, rude, self-righteous speech the like of which I haven't heard since people still had BSD/Solaris wars. Apparently, the staff of this store believes themselves to be above customer service simply by being an Apple vendor. Wake up, 40 year old Mom-basement-dweller, it's 2007. I will never set foot in this store again - I'd rather trek to the Apple store or buy it online before going here, despite it being a few blocks from my house. And, oh yeah. Girls occasionally know something about computers. So don't write off your customers just because you can't get a date to save your life. read more

Dunno if I'm going to be shunned for saying this, but I wouldn't get your computer repaired here. As far as product, and buying machines, I'm sure it's a great place, but I'm here to review the repair service. I live in Glen Park, don't own a car, and therefore don't often get to Berkeley, unfortunately. I was fully prepared to spend all day there if necessary in order to get my Titanium Powerbook repaired. I explained that I was having issues with my optical drive which would not read DVD's anymore. I wanted a simple diagnosis, as well as help un-partitioning a drive, something which the previous owner had done. I was informed this would take a couple of hours (they stated they would need to transfer my data to another computer and start over with my OS for the partitioning) and they would call and let me know when it was done. After around four hours of wandering I decided to go back and check on how things were going. Right as I walk in I see my repair man doing customer service/sales - ALWAYS a bad sign. I had paid for rush service and wondered why he wasn't repairing my machine or why I hadn't received a call yet. Turns out they could not get any data off my machine, because my optical drive was rejecting discs. Hadn't I mentioned this to them in the beginning? "Well, we could always replace your optical drive for $150." Was he seriously trying to UPSELL me at this point?? Mind you, he was also being rather surly - something I usually don't mind but at this juncture was pissing me off - and not delivering good customer service. I don't know anything about Apple repair, which is WHY I am bringing it to you guys, the experts. I really didn't appreciate A) not getting a phone call within an hour telling me there was nothing you could do, thereby making me waste a full day when I could be getting paid, B) still charging me for rush service when it was clear that the whole situation could have been taken care of in less time than was actually spent. The icing on the cake? My optical drive now does not read CD's as well. read more

One star only, because they came to their senses at the end. I'm a media professional, brought my Mac tower there once after it started to act up, programs crashed and the machine would freeze. I had difficulties installing software too. The guy at the store said it's a typical problem. It's the hard drive. They will switch it. come back the next day. So I do. Pick up the machine, go home, find a blank hard drive in my machine. (No they didn't test it) I had to install the operating system to do anything. Then I had to install all my professional software. Except I couldn't. Because the machine still acted up. So, a day wasted, I brought it back. Said it's not the hard drive, they should check the RAM. (I'm no computer whiz) I brought my discs so they could see for themselves. They said come back tomorrow. The next day they told me they replaced the hard drive and the software installs now. I go home, and find they only installed the operating system, nothing else. As I start installing my pro apps again I run into the same issues. Two days wasted, back to the store. I say check the RAM! And give me my old HD back! That's when they got pissy with me. I leave. Then they call and say I was right. One of the memory sticks was defect and they would replace the pair. I said I want only the defect one replaced. They said with RAM you have to replace the pairs. I insisted I only wanted one, so they finally threw in the second one for free. That's that one star they get from me. So I lost three days worth of work, a lot of trips back and forth, got insulted by the store personnel, and had to tell them how to fix my equipment. These guys are the best! A local shop where I can get great advice about my Mac from knowledgeable technicians who are allowed to wear whatever color shirts they want and work the kind of magic that the "geniuses" at the Apple store seems to be above. Ok ok, so I might be a little biased. These guys just rescued me, big time. Here's what happened. My GF's computer had been acting strange for a few months so I said I'd take a look at it. I noticed that it seemed to be a bit out of date, but nothing a little OS upgrade might not be able to fix. Long story short, about half way through the installation of Snow Leopard I got scary messages telling me that the installation had failed and that the drive was unreadable. With no backup my worst fears came true: everything on her computer was seemingly lost, and I was to blame. I took a deep breath and made an appointment with the Geniuses over at the Apple Store. Within 10 minutes they had run disk utility (which i had already tried) and proclaimed the drive dead. I was mortified. Surely the Genius' at Apple knew what they were doing, right? WRONG! Without much to loose I took the drive over to M.A.C. They quoted me a price range that was way more reasonable than the data recovery services advertised online, they communicated some very clear and honest odds, and gave me a 4 day timeline. Sure enough, on day 4 I called and found out they had rescued all my data and helped me figure out how to get it back on my original machine, and all for under $100. I'm writing this review from my revamped MacBook, thanks to M.A.C. Even though I've walked by this storefront many times, I didn't think to actually go in until I was in the middle of a wild goose chase trying to find a way to upgrade my Mac OS from 10.5 to 10.8. (Turns out that you can't upgrade directly from 10.5 to 10.8; you need to go from 10.5 to 10.6, which requires a disk that Apple no longer makes, and THEN upgrade to 10.8. Way to go, Apple!) Along with my OS update, I also decided to get a RAM upgrade (from 2 to 8 gigs). A few hours after I dropped off my laptop, Thea called saying that my hard drive was a little too full to support an OS update. She *very* patiently went through my iTunes library with me deleting crappy songs I never listen to in order to make room for the upgrade. Talk about service! I got a call the next day from Wei saying that it seemed like my hard drive was close to breaking, and told me that he felt uncomfortable upgrading the new OS onto a hard drive that was so fragile. He offered to replace my hard drive, but I wanted the freedom to pick out my own, so he let me take my computer home - no questions asked. I came back a few days later with a new hard drive for him to install. In the end, the work was done in less than a day. It was so much nicer to walk into a store and get service immediately rather than making an appointment at the Apple store and waiting forever! And, best of all - I feel like the price I paid was totally worth it. The cost of my RAM and my self-bought hard drive were easily half the price of what the Apple website would charge. Wei and Thea were really helpful and respectful along the whole way. I feel like pointing out that unlike a lot of the other reviewers here, I did not feel like anyone I talked to there was condescending. A+ service.
