I am a seasonal resident of Portsmouth (May-Oct),…read moreso I was concerned about finding a strength training/fitness program for myself which was challenging but also sensitive to a chronic knee injury. From the first moment I walked through the door into the studio in 2018, I was warmly welcomed and cared for - each barre instructor I've had the pleasure of working with has asked me if I had injuries and has diligently watched my posture to ensure I didn't aggravate existing, or create new issues. The classes are a wonderful mix of intense strength training using light weights, bands and balls, combined with yoga stretches and breathing. Each instructor is very knowledgeable and well-trained, caring and personality-plus. The physical studio is in a lovely spot downtown and is open, light and airy - a perfect spot to push yourself physically while remaining centered and calm. I only wish I could find something even a fraction this great in my winter home. I highly recommend Barre and Soul.

However I LOVE this gymnaside from that and could not…read moregive them anything less than 5stars: I want to share my experience so others are aware of the policies before enrolling in the wellness program. Four days before the program started, our health insurance unexpectedly changed because my spouse's employer switched carriers very quickly. Around the same time, my grandmother began actively passing. I was one of her primary caregivers and spent nearly two weeks by her side while she was dying. Despite communicating these circumstances, there was no compassion or flexibility from the program. They also ended up charging my card a $200 bio fee, which really left a bad taste in my mouth considering everything I had been communicating with them. They asked me to respond by March 6 about my insurance, which I did by updating my information through the patient gateway on March 6. I was later told they don't check the patient gateway, which makes me question why patients are asked to use it in the first place. The class itself also felt overfilled, with not enough space or equipment for everyone to participate as advertised. When I asked if I could transfer to the next weight-loss program due to these circumstances, I was denied, but was told I could continue with dietitian visits. If I had only wanted dietitian visits, I wouldn't have signed up for a structured wellness program. The gym itself is fantastic, and I would absolutely encourage people to enjoy the facility and even start their own program using the many resources available online. However, I would strongly encourage anyone considering the wellness program to carefully review their policies before signing up.

The locker rooms are usually relatively clean; however, sometimes I'll find hair in the shower which grosses me out, but most of the time I feel good about showering in there. The rates tend to be expensive, but the cost is middle of the road compared to other gyms of which I've been a member. More than Planet Fitness but less than Seacoast Athletic Club (gold's gym) in Portsmouth.

Hayes has an innate sense of understanding of the body and trauma. More importantly, he gives a great individualized approach to gaining strength and balance, reducing pain, and restoring confidence. He always has some new and exciting therapies and/or exercises that seem to both challenge and build my balance and strength. The center itself is also a fitness center, complete with a therapy pool. Not the type for laps, but the type for aquatic exercise. There is a plethora of equipment to use, from free weights and Cybex to stationary bikes and treadmills.

She customizes my workout and the workout of the other people in the small groups based on our physical needs. Pregnant? Back pain? Knee issues? No problem, she's got a modification for that! She remembers how much weight I used for certain exercises last time and pushes me to slowly increase the amount of weight or intensity of my workout to help me reach and excel my fitness goals. Since I like working out with her so much, and she will follow-up with me if I miss a workout, there is the sense of accountability that I need to continue to attend.
