My three year old son has been attending Concordia since November. He absolutely loves it! Starting a new preschool during Covid times was nerve wracking for sure, but Concordia has plenty of excellent policies in place to make a safe and healthy environment. All of the employees we encounter on a day to day basis are friendly, caring, and efficient. Communication from the teachers and administrators is excellent. We have been thrilled with our experience at Concordia these past three years. While the pandemic has made childcare much more difficult, the administration and staff at Concordia has been up to the challenge. Our first child has been at the school since they turned 13 months old (now 4 years old) and our second since infancy (now two). We've loved all of the teachers that our kids have had and appreciate the continuity (teacher turn over is very low compared to most centers). The kids stay active throughout the day and they have access to different outdoor playgrounds (different play lots for the younger versus older kiddos). There is also an annex room that can be used for indoor play during the colder months. The teachers set up the most wonderful art projects - I'm always amazed at their creativity and energy! The communication has been great with the teachers - we had trouble with our eldest napping at school but we worked with the teachers to try a few strategies we use at home and significantly improved the number of nap days (which makes for a nicer kid at the end of the day). The front staff is great as well - everyone is welcoming and will get to know your kiddo by name. The school has clear COVID-19 protocols (which I like) - they follow Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and CDC guidelines. If they didn't follow IDPH guidelines they could risk losing their license. The school is also very diverse and does a lot to support the community. I whole heartedly recommend Concordia - this recommendation comes from a parent of two children who attend, a person who worked at a private daycare for seven years, and a graduate of an elementary education program. Our daughter (2 years old) has been at Concordia since Sept 2020 and we've been impressed with the level of care and adherence to the Covid protocols. She loves her teachers and comes home with lots of art projects and stories about what they did during the day. The teachers are extremely responsive, especially that parents aren't allowed to go into the building (this is all daycares, not just Concordia). The class sizes are also small and the two on-site playgrounds are hard to beat! We were lucky to be able to get a spot, which wasn't available when she was just a baby. A NIGHTMARE DAYCARE - RUN!! Our experience was horrific. We started at the center on Milwaukee which was lovely. After they fired our teacher for taking too much vacation time, we transferred to the main center on Whipple. The experience at this school haunts our family. They are swimming in Covid, which leads to frequent class closures. They sent students home for one Covid symptom. They actually sent our 14 month home for being irritable. To return to the classroom after being irritable, we were required to follow their policy of a negative Covid test from the doctor. Policies like this and under skilled staff led to 4 doctor visits and 4 negative Covid tests in FIVE weeks. We haven't had an uninterrupted week of work in several months. On top of illogical policies, you have no interaction with teachers. We had to beg to share class plans. And our daughter was consistently miserable and exhausted. Our experience here was nothing short of a nightmare. If you care for your children at all, do not let them anywhere near this awful place. read more

2 years ago, when my son had been at this daycare for about a year, I was amazed and really happy. He has since moved up to a preschool classroom, and we've had our share of bumps in the road. But my largest concern is that for the past year, I've been trying to work *within* the system to have an issue between my child and another child rectified, but it seems my concerns either fall on deaf ears, or they're being dismissed or rationalized away. I appreciate the fact that their policy manual is written in such a way that situations can be handled on a case-by-case basis, but in my particular situation I've run up against repeated offenses of my child being injured (intentionally) by another child, to the point where his paternal grandmother has encouraged him to fight back if his teachers won't help him. This is not behavior the school endorses, and it's not the sort of behavior I want my child learning is okay, but after over a year of dealing with these issues, I'm at my wit's end. BUT that's not all... despite repeated documented incidents of this other child hitting or kicking other students, the school will not remove the child from their program. Seems like every other week, my child comes home with a new story and injury. In the past 6 weeks, we've had 2 black eyes (one of which occurred when my child was pushed by this other child from the top of the slide!!!) and a punch in the stomach. Yet, when I suggested if they don't resolve the issue, I'll pull my child from their program, they kindly informed me that if I do so without 4 weeks of advance notice, I forfeit my (somewhat sizeable) tuition deposit -- which I unfortunately cannot currently afford to do. I was under the impression that a daycare's responsibility was to protect ALL of the children attending there and keep them safe. I do not currently feel that Concordia is holding up their end of that bargain and I feel VERY STRONGLY that, since my son will be starting kindergarten in the fall, my concerns are being dismissed even more quickly than they were earlier this year. I'm still giving 3 stars because we've been mostly happy there for 3 years now and some of the teachers and assistants are nothing short of incredible, but the administration has definitely left something to be desired when it comes to resolving conflict. read more

Our daughter has been at Concordia Avondale since January 08, and is moving upstairs with the 3 - 5 year-olds in a few weeks. We're completely satisfied, the teachers are warm & enthusiastic, and the facility and grounds are great. We even get little one-sheet reports every day on the day's activities, such as whether lunch was eaten in full/or part (our daughter always eats her snacks in full, lunch, not so much), whether they went outside, what they read, specific activities, etc. There's also a beautiful indoor open space (the "annex") which is used for the little ones riding tricycles, parachute games, etc. Highly recommended - but we were lucky that we lived in the neighborhood before they opened, but I understand the waiting list is up to 300 kids or so, so if you're potentially interested, call *yesterday*~! read more

My son (3 1/2) has been going here since here was 2. The twos program is great - kind, warm teachers who care about your child. The schedule supports their development - snacks, naps, outdoor play (walks or playlot), indoor play when it's cold. We've attended part-time and full-time. We are now in the preschool and if you are going full-time, this is an excellent choice. Same comments as above: warm, caring teachers, good schedule, activities, field trips, etc. However, if you are going part-time, be warned. You child is separated from the full-time kids, there are too many in a classroom and it is difficult for the teachers to engage one-on-one. It's pretty overwhelming. As a result, I plan to pull my son out as soon as I can find a new place. It's totally chaotic. (Note: we started out in a full-time classroom, then were changed with a weekend's notice due to some state funding issue. this sucked. the transitions from two to pre-k are really thoughtful and planned out better) the director for infant and twos is really on her game, but the director for the preschool, while nice, doesn't seem to be as organized. We pay a quarterly fee for field trips, but haven't been on one since the fall (it's now spring). In the twos, they would bring the field trip to the class room in the winter to provide a different type of activity. Nothing like that now. I'm disappointed with the change. So I recommend for a little one and a full time pre-schooler, but not for a part-time pre-k kid. read more

I absolutely love this daycare center! my son has been going her for about 2yrs now and will be moving up to preschool in a few months. The teachers are very caring, considerate and always inform you of any concerns that they may have, your never left out the loop when it comes to your child. I was very hesitant when I had to return to work and find a care taker for my son but after reading the reviews I contacted the daycare ASAP...the waiting list was quit long, I believe I waited about 3 months before I was called saying they had a position available for my son. I was ecstatic!. After my son had been attending for a month or so, I think it was harder for me to say goodbye, lol....Every time I would drop him off he would go with the teachers with open arms and once we got into his class room he would leave me at the door, lol...for me that was an excellent sign that I had made the right choice for my son to go to Concordia. Knowing that my son loves being there and its like a second home for him, is a great feeling as a parent, to know he is with people you can trust. My wife and I are very unhappy with our experience at Concordia place's preschool program. Our daughters when through bad experiences in more than one occasion. Our twin daughters were enrolled about 2 years ago. First they were enrolled in the early learning program in the Whipple location. Their teachers were incredible and helped them a lot. We were really happy, as well as our daughters -they loved their teachers. The problem started when they were moved up to the preschool program. Both of my daughters started to act really nervous and started to bite their nails to the point of pulling considerable parts of the nail off and bleed. Once, my wife found the class walking back into the building and saw their teacher, pulling a girl from her shoulders while the girl was getting out of line and yelling at her very loud that was frightening. We took a two week vacation that same summer, we were surprised that both of our daughters were acting as they used to and were bitting their nails less. As soon as we came back we asked the preschool assistant director, to please move our daughters to a different classroom. The preschool assistant director helped us and I had a personal conversation with their teacher -I told her the reasons for the changed. She was really upset and avoided me and my wife every time we would see her in the building. One of the twins stop biding her nails totally, the other still does it but has never hurt herself to the point of bleeding. During Christmas week, in their new classroom, a boy asked my twin girls if he could touch her penis, he pulled her pants down and touched them. Unfortunately their teacher, which knew about it, did not communicate the incident to us. While in the shower, that afternoon, our daughters told us that a boy put his finger inside and explained the event. We came in to see their teacher the next morning. She told us, with no sign of worry or disappointment, that the only thing she could do will be to watch them closely and to avoid them been alone with the boy. She excused herself by saying that because it was Christmas week, there is very little attendance and that she did not have a regular class but let the kids play (I guess poorly attended) for a longer period of time in the kitchen area. We were not satisfy with the teachers plan but we decided to give her a second chance. A few weeks later another incident happened again -the teacher decided not communicate the incident to us after class for the second time. The next morning, one of their teachers asked my wife if our daughter told her what happened the previous day (like if it is our daughter's responsibility to tell us when something goes wrong). She said that while the kids were in the bathroom, a girl came out running to the teacher to tell her that the same boy was trying to touch our daughters in their private parts. We were devastated and never brought our daughters back. We had a conversation with the site director this time. She said that for kids that age is normal to be curious. I don't want other kids to experiment with my daughter's body the same way as I believe other parents will not like my daughters to touch their kid's private parts. It's totally inappropriate and a very bad excuse. The side director said that she did not know what to do different but to move the kitchen to a different place and to keep doing what their teacher was already doing. We considered that taking the same approach to the problem will not give a different result. Moving the kitchen is a great idea but they might need to move the bathroom too. I never felt understood, I believe, for what I can see, that until the last day, Concordia Place was unable to deal with this incidents. I had to write an email to the CEO because we never received an apology from the institution. Concordia place preschool program has a beautiful facility -I believe that an institution is not measure by their building but by the people that form the team. It takes a few minutes to know a building it takes time to know their staff and we do not like Concordia's preschool program. read more

Our daughter has been attending Concordia Place in Avondale for a year and we have nothing but good things to say!! She has been in one of the two year old classroom with two of the most amazing teachers!! They are engaged, open and very loving and seem to truly enjoy what they do. We have had only positive interactions with all of the staff at Concordia Place and assume the warm and welcoming environment will continue once our daughter transitions to her Preschool class. The school follows the Creative Curriculum and although her classroom is predominately play based, there is definitely structure to her day as well (each classroom has a daily schedule that they follow). We feel she has grown and learned so much in general and then on top of it, her teacher is always coming up with fun and educational art projects, which the kids seem to do on a daily basis. Our daughter is now so interested in art and loves creating things both at school and at home (through all of this art making she has really fine tuned some skills; drawing, cutting, pasting, object placement etc.). The facility is amazing in and of itself. It is bright and sunny, with a structure connected to the school called "the annex". The annex is kind of like a small gymnasium, which allows for year round physical play for each classroom a few times a day. Weather permitting, the kids also have the outdoor "play lot" for even more physical play. Hooray!! read more

I feel great after I drop my daughter off for daycare at Concordia Place. All of the teachers, as well as the staff, are very welcoming to me, my husband and of course my daughter. My son has been attending this facility since they opened September 2006. I am very happy with with all teachers and Concordia staff and all there curriculum activities for the children . If I have any problems or concerns I have always address to the teachers or with billing I would address it to billing department and it will get solved. We have our two daughters (5 & 2) enrolled in Concordia at Whipple. This daycare is clean, secure, and fun! Our girls love their teachers. We love that they are on a set schedule and absolutely appreciate that the teachers are bilingual and speak to the children in Spanish (if requested). There are a few issues with personal items missing but this is easily resolved by putting your child's name on EVERYTHING. It would be easier to pay tuition if they had an on-line system, but overall I would recommend this place to parents looking to place their child into daycare for the first time, they are simply amazing. read more

We could not have more confidence in where we send our son to daycare. Concordia Place is so wonderful. We have a shy little boy but when he walks in those doors he is so comfortable and happy. We started at Concordia when our son was only 4 months old. The staff is great about communications and transparency. The front desk employees are warm, helpful and get to know all the kids. Even in the infancy room the teachers plan curriculum that help your child grow, develop and learn. The teachers follow your child from one classroom to the next as they age up so your child has consistency. And the teachers are AMAZING. Miss Mildred is our lead teacher and she is so knowledgeable, so nurturing, so communicative - we feel truly fortunate to have her support day to day in taking care of our little one. Miss Iris and Miss Sydney are equally amazing and our son absolutely adores them. They are like our family outside the home and are such an integral part of our son's daily life and development. My family and I love Concordia! It truly feels like a second home. My son has been here since he was three months old and he loves it. The best part is that his teachers have been with him since the beginning. He is now two years old and thriving. He has learned so much, I give so much credit to his teachers for all that he knows. They always work with the children if needed. For example if a child needs more help learning words they'll give him/her that. Our two toddlers attend Concordia and we couldn't be happier. Even before they started attending, one of their teachers came to our home with the Family Support Specialist to get to know all of us. To our knowledge, most other daycare centers don't go the extra mile in that way. We have also appreciated the parent-teacher meetings as it lets us know that the teachers are truly invested in our kids' development. It warms our hearts when we see our kids walk right up to their teachers in the morning to give them hugs. We know our kids feel safe and loved. We are always able to reach the classroom by phone for questions or concerns and the staff are incredibly responsive to our needs. As relatively new parents, we feel very comfortable leaving our children in Concordia's care. read more

My daughter started attending preschool here the week after her third birthday after never going to daycare or anything like that before. So it was an enormous transition to suddenly being away from her parents all day, and she was terrified the first few times I dropped her off. After four full months, I couldn't be more pleased with how she has grown from a baby into an independent child, who insists on dressing herself, going to the bathroom without help, etc. and is way more social and comfortable around other kids. The teachers and staff are wonderful, friendly, and communicative, and really do seem to give lots of individual attention to each child. And even in a class full of 3 year olds, she seems to be getting a genuine education in addition to all the playtime. My daughter comes home with new vocabulary words, facts about animals, and even told me her new favorite author is Eric Carle. And they somehow get her to nap every day which is a miracle. read more

My two daughters have been at Concordia (Whipple location) for almost two years, and I really could not be happier with it. We had a bad experience at a home daycare prior to that, and we knew we wanted a change. Concordia really has everything we were looking for and more. We've experienced every level of classrooms (infant room, toddler room, 2 yr. olds, preschool), and have found that our children are engaged at every level. There is a lot of learning and art time, but there is also a lot of play time, with great indoor and outdoor spaces for that. The staff is excellent with keeping an easy-going but timely schedule, and they really help families to meet the needs of your child, i.e. potty-training, special dietary restrictions, etc. More importantly, my girls absolutely love it! My older daughter asks what day it is every morning just to find out if she gets to go to school that day. They love their teachers, and I know that their teachers love them back. Everyone knows all the kids' names, and that really helps to keep a cozy and loving environment. I'm actually going to be sad when my older daughter starts kindergarten next year (and she'll be sad too!) I find the tuition to be very reasonable, especially considering the hours, the high quality of the teachers, the materials used everyday, and the exceptional cleanliness and brightness of the space. I understand that the wait list is long, but the way we got in was by getting my older daughter started in the 2 year old room, and then with their sibling-priority policy, my younger daughter was able to get a spot in the infant room. If you have to wait though, it is well worth it! If you have a 2-5 year old, they usually have some vacant spots available, or at the most, a very short wait. read more

My son started at Concordia Place in June 2015. He started in the Tiger Twos and then moved to the Rockets. he loves this daycare and so do I! it is a vast improvement over the last place he was at. I find the physicality of the daycare to be modern and clean. The teachers and staff are great and he has made many friends. they have been flexible with my schedule (I work evenings and therefore get him to daycare later) and are always there to help. The school accommodated his speech therapy sessions during school hours. Currently, in 3-5 years old are learning shapes, letters, how to write their name, and Spanish. This school is a welcoming environment from the supervisor, to the teachers to the staff at the front desk. You get a good feeling when you walk in. Children are eager to get to their classes. The teachers and students are happy. The classrooms are filled with age appropriate activities. Teaching young children can be tiring, but I have never seen a teacher who is not energetic and engaged with the children. They truly care for them as if they were their own. Great day care! My daughter is going for almost 4 months now, and I love it! They are doing a lot of activities with kids and teaching a lot of things what a normally a stay home parent would not do. I really like the thing that when I walk through the place most of the personal know my daughter, it is cause they have rotating stuff who goes to the classes where help is needed. Concordia Avondale is actually at 3300 N. Whipple. It's a brand new facility but I don't recommend it. They won't give you a tour of the facility until they have an opening for you. I was called when a spot became available and went for a tour. They ask for a $50 registration fee on the spot before you have even committed to them. They then set up a "play date" where you bring your child in. I'm so glad I did that. The rooms have a teacher and an aide. There were 16 two year olds in with a stressed out teacher and an aide. The teacher kept getting phone calls on the school line (it was all school business but still not a good idea). I had an appointment on my day off with the administrator, Laura. When I asked the teacher if I could go meet with Laura to ask some questions while my son played I was told that she was pulled into a meeting and that I would have to reschedule. I went to the front desk and asked about my meeting and was told that same thing. I was also told that I could meet with her to go over questions after my son started the program-that seems a little bit out of order. I found the entire experience unprofessional. I don't like the way I was treated, I don't like the way the teacher interacted with the children-it was total chaos. read more

I have been taking my son at Concordia Place on Whipple st. for a little over a year now and I have to say that I looked around and compared many day-cares and when I went to check out Concordia Place as soon as I walked in I felt very comfortable . My son goes to pre-school now and he loves it very much. His teacher Ms Kelly and Ms Esmeralda also , are the best .... He loves them both dearely . My son has been at the Whipple campus for just over 6 months now. He started in the Toddler program and is now in the Twos classroom. I have been incredibly impressed by his education and the overall commitment to their mission. I chose Concordia for many reasons: bright, clean, onsite access to outdoor play areas, healthy food and a diverse staff and student population. When I toured other daycares they were expensive and also catered to the most wealthy urbanites. I wanted my son to have access to diverse cultures but also socio-economic diversity. Concordia uses a sliding scale, so they make the program available to more people that would otherwise not be able to afford the high quality of care. Little did I know that when I was making this decision, it would also impact my life. About 3 months after enrolling, I lost my job and have had to take advantage of the sliding scale. No other program would have been so accommodating and I would have had to remove my son from daycare. And as a single parent, I needed to continue my son's enrollment to be able to locate another job. So Concordia offered me a lifesaving service. When I was getting "No" from so many other places, Concordia was offering me "Yes". That is what someone needs to hear in a time of uncertainty. I appreciate so much about this program and the people that run it, that I can not put it all into words. I have found many of the other parents to be wonderful as well. My experience has been positive on multiple levels, especially with the quality and interest of the teachers and staff. I would highly recommend this program to anyone looking for the best in early childhood education. It is not just a daycare, but a place of learning and growth for children. So, you can imagine why the waiting list is as long as it is! I highly suggest becoming a part of this school, it is truly a community and a place of "Yes". read more

Update: Two years later and we are very happy with the quality of care that our children have. Sure we've had a few issues but they have always been addressed. We now have a second child in the infant room. We love the fact that they have a private outdoor playlot for the infants and toddlers that is adjacent to their room. The teachers are wonderful. Our littlest one is one a great schedule and she loves going there too now! ------------------------------- My husband & I are so impressed with this facility! Our daughter had been attending Condordia for a few weeks now. After having one bad experience, it's comforting to find a clean, beautiful & bright child care center in the city. The toddler's and babies have their own outdoor areas. This way they can play outside all the time! Unfortuanley the wait is long but it's well worth it. The teachers that our daughter has had so far are very nice too. The administration seems to follow all of the rules which can be annoying for some but why would you want your child at a facitilty that isn't on top of everything? My daughter has attended Concordia Place since she was 3 1/2 years old (she starts kindergarten this fall). Our experience at Concordia Place has been wonderful and we feel very fortunate to have found such a wonderful preschool for our children. We've been a Concordia family off and on for the past 17 years. My youngest started attending Concordia Place at 18 months and is now in the after school program. In fact, one of the reasons we chose his elementary school was that it allowed him remain at Concordia. The teachers are absolutely wonderful, they go above and beyond to find the best way to engage with your child as an individual. His preschool teachers, Ms. Kelly and Ms. Esmerelda, were so amazing that on his last day with them, I'm the one who broke down crying! A really special thing about Concordia is that the staff is so consistent - when I walked in after an 7 year absence, I recognized many of the same faces. Probably because Concordia values and supports continuing education for teachers and staff. I also love how involved Concordia Place is with the local community, across a spectrum of ages and interests. The teen entrepreneur program is something we need more of in Chicago.
