This is a great place. They took care of my dear mother for two and a half years before she died last March. Having once been in the seminary and a pastoral minister, I've been in and out of a lot of nursing home senior living facilities. This place is tops! Really! All the staff are extraordinarily kind, warm, patient (no pun intended) and attentive to the needs of the residents. My mom couldn't have been better cared for. They always looked in on her to make sure she was alright. They treated mom (Marie) with dignity and respect, patience and kindness. Although once sponsored by the Lutheran Church, they have a very Catholic presence. The Diocese of Cleveland provides a priest to offer Mass there every Sunday, and they have a wonderful sister (nun) from Africa who is the coordinator. When mom died, I gave her whatever she wanted from her room. The food seemed adequate. But the most important thing was the atmosphere of real care and concern. They will do the bare minimum at all times, my grandfather went from independent living to memory care, and did not give us proper moving instructions like what we would need, who would be helping with the move, etc. the past 3 times I've visited he has not been shaven, and the staff did not help put in his hearing aids. My grandma has been staying here due to a health issue, and I was impressed and comforted to know she was in such a nice place. The employees we encountered were very friendly and warm, and my grandma agreed, saying that they have been treating her very nicely. Grandma said the food is wonderful, and the choices are plentiful (this speaks volumes considering she is used to being the one cooking for everyone for most of her life!) The grounds are absolutely beautiful. Well manicured lawns, plants and flowers, and plenty of space for walking the grounds outside and enjoying sitting in outdoor areas. There are a lot of comfy common areas, complete with plenty of space to watch TV, listen to music, play piano, or read a book. They have birds in a large enclosure, a small aquarium, and greenhouse as well. They even provide a lot of enrichment for the patients, like live music, buffets, shopping, and exercise. The cleanliness of her bathroom (and overall of the home) was hotel-like in nature and didn't feel like (or even smell) like your typical old folks home. Overall, I would trust and recommend Lutheran home to anyone needing to stay here for a short term or long term stay. read more

I was visiting a friend at Lighthouse section of the Lutheran Home. I was very disappointed in her room; just one chair for visitors. She complained that she was unable to get any hot water to wash her hands because when she lets the water run, it fills the basin and it takes overnight to drain because the drain pipes are clogged. There is no room to keep her personal items like toothbrush, hair brush, etc. in the bathroom where she has easy access to them. She has to keep them on the bedside table and carry them with her when she wants to clean up. This is difficult for her because she is in a wheelchair. There were wet, used towels left on the floor and it seems it takes a long time to get an aide to come to her room to help getting her to the bathroom to end to her needs. read more

My mother was in hospital and needed to go to a skilled nursing home for PT/OT to get her strength back before returning to her apartment. After visiting several options and discussing them with her we chose the Lutheran home. We notified the case manager at the hospital who then contacted the home. On Monday afternoon they informed the case manager that my mom's case was "too complicated for them to handle". Multiple doctors at the hospital stated there was nothing complicated about my mom's case. She needed PT/OT and an antibiotic once a day. The case manager reached out to the home multiple times Tuesday to find out what their concerns were. The admissions staff at the Lutheran home would not take their calls nor return their messages. I had to leave work early on Tuesday to evaluate other options. My mother is now at St. Mary of the Woods (5 Stars) where the Admissions staff easily, and professionally, worked with the case manager to define a plan to have my mother moved to their facility. (They have not had any issues "handling" my mom's case.) I'm actually thankful my mother did not get into the Lutheran home if their care practices are anything like their admissions practices - lack of professionalism/responsiveness. Be careful - the case manager stated this is not the first time they have had issues with the Lutheran home. Additionally it was believed by hospital personnel that the real issue is was insufficient staff. read more

Established in 1932, the Lutheran Home at Concord Reserve is a beautiful Westlake-based Senior Life Community Campus on a 24-acre campus, consisting of Assisted Living Residences, Health Center, and Advanced Rehabilitation (physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy.) The kind, caring staff is carefully selected & highly-trained. A highlight is the indoor Main Street--which include the Concord Theater (movie theater), duck pond, garden train, library, Field House café, aquarium, full-service salon, & finch aviaries. The cafe is open to the public & serves delicous homemade soups, salads, sandwiches, wraps and cookies. The Chapel is the physical and spiritual center of the campus. A fulltime Lutheran Chaplain and a part-time Catholic Chaplain lead Worship Services each Sunday & Wednesday, and meet regularly with residents and family members. Rosary is held on Tuesday. Bible Study is offered weekly. Residents of all faiths--or none at all--are warmly welcomed! read more

Lutheran Homes received my mother Fall 2014 for long-term skilled nursing since she had become non-ambulatory and other chronic issues. My mother was on hospice, so the facility did little unfortunately to encourage my mother to get up out of bed. The facility itself is very nicely decorated with birds, fish and ducks for residents to visit and has many activities, such as movie theater, bingo, church services, etc. Although I was disappointed by the staff at Lutheran as they seemed less interested in the residents and their needs. The staff was not encouraging to my mother and did little to try to get her involved in activities since she "refused" to get up, although I believe this was more of a staffing issue and the care approach. I repeatedly asked the staff to approach my mother with a firm we need to get up and go - which from what I saw on a few occassions, they did half heartedly. Rarely did they dress her in her clothes. The staff ignored residents on many occassions when I would visit in the evenings when most people do not visit. It is shameful that I could not find one CNA or assistant some evenings in any of the rooms - and call lights were on in one or more resident rooms. Really believe this facility is understaffed. They always wanted to over-medicate my mother with antidepression and other mental health drugs rather than just peeking in to say "is everything ok" - even if it is 10 times per day. Look at Medicare.gov for nursing home ratings, and you will see the staffing to resident ratio (particularly for RN's or LPN's) is low with only a 2 out of 5 star (or below average) staffing ratio for Lutheran Homes Westlake, OH. They have CNA's but usually you cannot find them? Too bad this facility spends its money on making the building look "nice" when really the staffing is the most important and where they should switch their focus! Staff seemed very negative and not friendly at all - beware! I switched my mother to another facility after a hospital stay - which gave me an opportunity to move her elsewhere. The new place was able to work with her and get her up in a wheelchair more frequently and even to bingo and getting her hair done on a couple of occassions. My mother also seemed to have better treatment in terms of her care, including medications, as her feet were not as swollen and appeared more alert. Feel like the new place cared and made an effort to get her up and dressed or even dressed for the day. Lesson to learn: Take a good look at the Medicare.gov ratings - they mean alot and staffing and quality care is just as important as no or little state/federal deficiencies. Don't go by the "looks" of a facilty. read more
