November 8, 2025 - Tried out the turnip and shrimp and soft shelled crab fried rice. I've tried them both before in the past and both were really good. The turnip were also made with a bit of egg and had a little chilli. The soft shell crab came in small and large chunks. They left the shell on and as the name implies, it's soft so you can chew it just fine. Congee Queen is a staple for good Chinese food. The food is good and service decent. This place is normally quite busy but come is "off hours" and you will avoid waiting. What prevented a four star was the "shrink flation" for all the dishes! It appears prices are about the same the all the dishes are smaller by about 25% in size. Ordered takeout. The place is spacious and we went at a busier time so we had to wait for our order. They can get busy real quick. The service was decent. They fill the food to the brim and pack it but the containers are small for the price. Each dish is between $17-25. We ordered the following: shredded chicken fried rice, fried sweet and sour pork, crispy chicken with secret sauce and tofu in fukkien style. The chicken fried rice was standard. The sweet and sour pork was good. The pork and pineapple were big pieces, compared to most other places. I quite enjoyed it. The crispy chicken came with spiced salt and black vinegar. I'm not sure if the black vinegar is the special sauce or it was given in error. My main complaint is that it was very dry. I would not get this dish again. I really enjoyed the tofu dish. I love this place a lot. They have delicious Asian food and their prices is a great deal for the portion sizes you get. It's no wonder they have several locations and each time I visit they are busy. Despite that they are busy, they are fast in getting your food out. Even during the pandemic. On my last visit our group of 6 ordered 8 dishes and we had enough left overs for 6-7 take out boxes to go! Everything came out within 10-15 minutes. Insane! We arrived at 8pm Friday night and there was no wait. Their most popular item is their turnip "patties" which are more like pan fried turnip cubes. Similar to a turnip cake at dim sum places. They are slightly crispy on the outside and oh so fluffy on the inside. Had to order 2 of those. 1 spicy but it wasn't. Ask for chili sauce on the side. Their empress fried rice has seaweed, bonito flakes, unagi and unagi sauce. Takes like a takoyaki or unagi roll in a fried rice form. Delicious! This place gets quite busy so make reservations. Even though we had reservations we still had to wait 10-15 min. I enjoyed their mushroom casserole pot. All of there dishes were flavorful and authentic. Their chew chow duck was moist and extremely tasty...a bit different than the traditional duck we get in NY. Congee Queen is a chain that I always love visiting on my yearly trip to see family in Toronto. Really good food but I would advise you go with someone who speaks Cantonese if you have allergies or need your food prepared in a special way. Garlic and baby bokchoi and the sweet and sour pork are always hits. Ambiance is nice and some location will have private rooms that you can reserve. First meal out during the pandemic and I wasn't sure what to expect. This never stood out to me before but I didn't see a button to open the door automatically. Once inside a server greeted us with a facial mask and face shield. We were taken to a booth beside a window. In the centre there were only 2 larger round tables and no tables on the other side. I did see a server disinfecting the table and chairs once they were vacated which put my mind at ease. Upon finishing our meal the server directed to a side door to exit the restaurant. It was a quick turnaround for food to arrive after ordering. I attribute this to the number of customers in the restaurant. We ordered dishes that are staples for us. The rice noodle rolls were quite salty which was disappointing. They were also sitting in a pool of oil when we got to the bottom of the dish. The sauce for the snow pea leaves with oyster mushrooms was too thick and goopy but otherwise the taste was okay. read more

All the dishes here are a hit. They definitely have some of the best bbq pork and bbq duck in Toronto. Gotta ask for the half fatty bbq pork though, or else it'll be too lean. We also love getting the XO sauce fried rice rolls. A super quick char and nice crisp to the outside while maintaining the texture of rice rolls. Also, we usually get the fried glutinous rice as well. It never disappoints. We come back often and will keep coming back again. And don't forget about the congee (I guess they're called Congee Queen for a reason). Their mushroom 7 grain congee is our go to. read more

I tend to visit a couple of Congee Queen locations fairly often. The one across from The Shops at Don Mills was perfect when I used to work at Yonge and Eglinton, and I felt like picking up dinner after work. It's also a convenient location to meet up with folks. The other one is this one -- Congee Queen's flagship store. I pass by it every day after work, on my way home. This location is at the Shops on Steeles and 404. This restaurant is detached from the mall, on the northeast corner of Steeles Avenue and Townsend Road. Parking around this restaurant tends to get busy, no matter when you go. I park far away by default and walk over. I don't usually dine in. The last time I did, it was with my boyfriend a good three years ago. I typically order takeout and head home to chow down. The food is delicious and consistent. These days, my favourite dish is the beef and mushroom sizzling plate. The portion size is so generous that I don't order any rice. It's flavourful and yummy. If you are a huge mushroom fan who loves beef, this dish is for you. I have also had seafood with dry garlic fried rice. One word: yummy! I pretty much like any fried rice that this restaurant offers. In the past, I went through a phase of ordering the Szechwan chicken and shrimp. The chicken was tender. The dish had a lot of shrimp. Came here with the fam for a New Years dinner and it was BUSSSYY. But I kinda get the sense that they're busy like this everyday. Luckily our service didn't really suffer. We had our order taken promptly and our food came even quicker. The quality of the food is on par with other Chinese restaurants (didn't really stand out in a good or bad way) but they're decently priced and portioned. We got the fish maw soup, deep fried shrimp dumplings (was most disappointed because the outer shell wasn't crispy at all, why else would I get deep fried then?!), fried rice, greens, crispy chow mein (also disappointing because not crispy and too saucy), satay beef, boiled chicken, and HK style fried lobster. The only thing I wish is if they had a bigger fish selection - they only have fried choices and my dad can't have too many fried foods. Decent congee Queen location.. but not one of my favourites. Went here with some friends for dinner and the food and service was adequate. I ordered my usual favourites - seafood congee and an order of garlic string beans - no complaints here. Due to COVID-19, all of the servers are definitely taking some protocols to ensure the safety of the guests in the restaurant, however I definitely felt like this place could be doing a bit better in terms of cleanliness. In addition, the guests were not spaced out throughout the restaurant and I felt like I needed to wear my mask throughout the entire time I was in the restaurant. Congee Queen is exactly what it claims to be. The Queen of Congee. The menu is chock full of congee options, so there is something for everyone. We came for a late breakfast/early lunch (around 10:30am), aka brunch, to get our day started. The server was helpful in helping us determine the sizes of the congee orders. We still ordered way too much but we would have ordered double if we had known. I got the small classic pork and preserved egg congee, which ended up being just enough for two people. The congee was smooth and had such a depth of flavor I've never experienced in a congee. We also tried the radish cakes which were highly recommended and deliciously fried unlike any fried radish cake I've ever had. Sliced into bite sized cubes, the radish cakes were fragrant and hot and amazing. The dough fritter rice noodle roll was also a must order - the two dipping sauces served with it was delicious! We even dipped some of our radish cakes in these sauces, too. Prices are reasonable and appropriate for the portion sizes. Now, all I'm excited for is my next visit for late night congee! read more

Congee Queen is always my family's go to eat out spot, because they are well known for their good value and tasty foods. It's owned by the same guys who run Congee Wong, so because the 2 restaurants we have been loyal customers for over a decade. Their congees are definitely their big selling point. The portions are large, loaded with toppings, and their seafood congees never taste fishy. They have a lot of other dishes to choose from as well, such as rice, noodles, meats and vegetable dishes, and they even have a BBQ counter in house, which we love getting for take home. Super busy with lots of standing while waiting. There are three seats in the back by the washroom which came in handy for those of senior age. Otherwise, you have to stand and wait. By the way for those who haven't been here, make sure you get your ticket from the hostess, before you stand and wait. Although it was very busy, the turnover was pretty quick, despite all those standing and waiting, we were seated within 35-40 minutes. The food is tasty and there are new "Queen" menu options. There are some cool additions like ramen chinese-japanese fusion noodles, octopus or salmon fried rice etc. We ordered the usual cantonese chow mien, turnips, congee, hot pot rice, beef etc. The portions are average not heaping. The price for 7 items was $100 approximately before tip, which is not the cheapest for Chinese food. However, the consensus was that the food was tasty. The service is quick and they are more than willing to provide plates, water, spoon and forks without an attitude, which is great. No conversing with the servers, as the focus is on efficiency rather than friendliness. They do need the efficiency because there were non-stop new customers lining up in the front door. read more

I had been to this restaurant before but will never go here again. The service is terrible. Due to dietary & religious restrictions we double checked with the waiter that the dish was shrimp only. He stated it was only shrimp. When he brought it the dish had chicken. I told them that we had ordered a shrimp dish - they refused to take it back. They told us that they did not want to throw it in the garbage. That is a TERRIBLE response to someone's dietary restriction especially when the waiter insisted the dish would only be shrimp and we informed him that we carefully only chose seafood options. Been here twice since covid-19 closures and they've been doing a good job! They have a nice patio outside for warmer days and they make sure to space everyone out. Inside, they put up plexiglass in between the booths and took out some of the tables. Waiters make sure to take your number and menus are cleaned between uses. Food wise, it comes out fast and it's just as good as it was before. Prices are a little high for a Chinese restaurant but their portion sizes really make up for it. We almost always have leftovers! I would stay away from ordering the BBQ pork as a side order for the soup noodles though as they only give 5 little pieces. You might as well order the whole dish. Overall definitely recommended for those times you just need a change of environment instead of eating at home all the time! read more

We happened to land here when looking for a relatively late (around 10pm) option in the area. A wide open and almost cavernous space which boasts multiple large circular tables at its corners greets us. The round tables taps in to a special need for greater family style seating in more mainstream restaurants in the GTA. Even at this late hour, the Congee Queen was packed. Lovely, complimentary tea was brought immediately and was refilled. In the tradition of ordering and sharing in the 'Family Style' tradition, the six us us share an amazing bowl of Wonton Soup, a rich broth with a perfectly seasoned wonton with a delicate shrimp inside. Next we opt for an old favorite of General Tso's chicken. The chicken maintains its moisture, reflecting a fact of an expert fry and and serves with an actually higher protein to broccoli ratio. The other dishes similarily were generous in portion sizes. The service was efficient, non intrusive and attentive concurrently. Even after a likely long and cruelly shift, the servers appeared to sustain a high level of energy. One was observed to favour a possible hamstring sprain from being on the feet all day. Overall, before tip was $80 for 6 of us. For value good quality and service, especially at a late hour, a great experience and will definitely come back. read more

Congee Queen has been a family favorite for longer than I can remember. While the food can be hit or miss, not much has really changed except the prices! It's nice to see new menu items from time to time, as we tend to order the same ole same ole ... This time around, I was able to convince my family members to change it up a little bit. - Beef Tendons: It's one of my favorites at dim sim. The tendons were very tender with a generous portion of sticky sauce that called for bowls of steamed rice. - Snow Pea Leaves with King Mushrooms: One of my relatives found the mushrooms to be quite chewy, just something to think about if you have a member in your party who has to eat softer foods. - Pan Stuffed Bean Curd/Eggplant/Green Pepper: It's been a while since we ordered this and it's quite consistent. There is a generous portion of fish paste covered in an oyster/soya sauce. - Garoupa and Fried Bean Curd in Hot Pot: There wasn't a lot of fish meat, mostly pieces with bones and skin. The bean curd always tastes good when it's deep-fried and combined with a savory sauce. I would personally pass on this dish. The grouper fillets with sweet and sour sauce is a better choice since the fish is boneless and skinless. It also comes with a sweet corn sauce or deep-fried with just spicy pepper/salt. - Beef with Spicy Sambal Chow Mein: This is a nice alternative to our Cantonese Chow Mein. The beef is tender and this dish is not too spicy. The food overall can be quite greasy and salty, which is difficult to avoid when eating deep fried or stir-fried dishes, so we tend to make these meals an occasional treat. read more

Haven't been in a while. Decided to come here on a weeknight for dinner. Ordered the diced sirloin golden bowl ($17.99), tiger shrimp and mango salad ($16.99) and the dough fritter rice noodle roll ($4.95) for two people. The portion of the two main dishes definitely weren't very big but they tasted good. The mango salad was refreshing with about 10-12 pieces of large shrimps. The shrimps were lightly battered and drizzled with some sweet creamy mayo sauce. The mango salad tasted good too with hint of cilantro and orange, not liking the orange taste. The diced sirloin was so tender and sizzling hot without the hot plate. The wonton wrap(?) bowl was a bit stale though. A pleasant surprise ;) Dough fritter rice roll was standard and filled us up. We were the first customer after the restaurant opened, so we get to pick any table. We ordered the house super bowl congee, crispy Cantonese chow mein, fried chili turnip patties, deep fried sweet cruller, BBQ pork and roasted pork. All the dishes were really good with the exception of the bbq pork being too ,"bbqed" as some had dark charcoal burned spots. The servers were all really friendly. I enjoyed the super bowl of congee as it has lot of seafood such as salmon, clams, shrimp, scallops in it. The congee base here has always been delicious and flavourful. The fried chili turnip patties were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The Cantonese crispy chow mein was a miss since it was not crispy at all and the noodles I found to be quite soggy. However, everything else were pretty good. My favourite would have to been the deep fried sweet cruller that looks like cow's tongue, sweet and crispy with wonderful yeasty flavours. read more

The OG Congee Queen in the GTA. We've been coming here or the Markham location as a family since it opened, and since I've moved away to Edmonton (severely lacking quality relatively affordable Chinese food) it's become a must visit spot when I come see my family. Something to note, a lot of the dishes are quite a decent size so don't order more than one dish per person, unless you're a fan of leftovers (they're usually pretty good the next day so leftovers aren't a problem for my family). The congee is fairly consistent, and we usually get the House Super Bowl congee with a fried dough stick order on the side. If seafood isn't your thing, I'd also suggest the Shredded Pork & Gold Preserved Egg Congee, or a simple Sliced Beef, or Minced Beef congee. They have a ton of rice and noodle dishes that are great. Again I come here with the expectation that I'm getting consistency, not a fine dining experience. My sister's favourites are the Crispy Cantonese "Chow Mein" or Fried Rice Noodle with Beef/Chicken/Pork & Vegetable (Usually Beef or Chicken for her). Sometimes the food can feel a bit heavy because everything is cooked in oil, but it's not so much as to make you feel like you've been eating fast food (at least in my experience it hasn't). My dad loves getting Spice & Pepper Salt Pork Chop and Deep Fried Sea Bass with Secret Sauce. Usually we'd also get some sort of vegetable just plain cooked with garlic, and some Fried Chili Turnip Patties (which aren't actually as spicy as it sounds). The "Turnip Patties" come with little peppers and are a red colour because of the chili sauce, they do get a bit repetitive if you're going to eat an entire order on your own. I feel like whatever you end up ordering, it'll generally be good. They have all the safe things as well like shrimp wonton soup, general tao chicken, sweet and sour pork, etc. There's honestly so much on the menu that you'll more likely than not find something that will suit almost everyone in your party. I gave this spot a 5 star rating mostly because of the nostalgia and the memories I have of coming here with my family. The food is pretty solid for the price and if you don't come in here with fine dining expectations, you're probably going to be impressed. There's a reason this restaurant has become so successful around the GTA opening up various locations across the area.
