But when I met her in person, she was actually sweet and even gave me 5% off for paying cash on orders over $40! The food is Cantonese style and just as good as the big chains in Toronto. We got Cantonese fried noodles, special fried rice, Chinese broccoli with beef, and Singaporean vermicelli. Super tasty, though I did feel extra thirsty... probably a sign of some heavy sodium, but still delicious! The place is no frills geared towards takeout only. When the restaurant picked up the phone and I asked about the order, she continued to go on a lengthy rant about Skip the Dishes, and then when I asked about the status of my specific order, she accused me of having trust issues. The Lunch special is only from Tuesday to Friday from 11am to 4pm. It includes the soup of the day, one crispy deep fried egg roll and one of 12 dishes for $8.99 + tax. You can also add a soft drink for $1. I ordered #C3 from the Lunch Special menu of Eggplant with Minced Pork in Salted Fish Sauce on Rice Noodle. For that price and quantity, it's one of the best deals for lunch in the area. I suggest also calling and placing your order ahead as it takes about 15 minutes for them to prepare the meal. There's also lots of free parking in front of the restaurant. This place is supposed to be (one of) the best in Vaughan. Do yourself a favour and drive to Richmond Hill instead. If you do come here, stick to the Cantonese dishes, which are probably better. Crab meat with fish maw thick soup was pretty good. The soup was tasty and there was a lot of fish maw. It's better with Vinegar which unfortunately is not provided. I couldn't identify whether the minute particles red & white were crab or crab flavoured seafood stick. Given how far they went to cut it up, probably the latter. Unfortunately, it was all downhill from there. Szechuan Style Tiger Shrimp Chow Mein was alright. It was crispy (deep fried) noodles with separate sauce. The sauce tasted OK. While the noodle portion was huge, there wasn't enough sauce (even for a smaller portion), and there wasn't much shrimp inside. Chicken wings with General Tso Sauce was tossed with the sauce (despite this being takeout) but even taking that into account they weren't really crispy. The sauce was not great either, only serviceable, having a muted flavour. The egg roll was freshly fried, but was stuffed only with bean sprouts and had no minced pork (or indeed anything else). Braised Beef Noodle in Soup was awful. It was too spicy - and only spicy at that, without the richness or flavour that this dish should have. Moral of the story: don't go to a Cantonese place for Taiwanese food. read more

I'm new to the area so I'm glad they had Chinese food around... The spot is more of a takeout spot. It seems like it's closed for dine in as there's only two tables and they have a sign for takeout instructions. I ordered ahead and was able to pick it up within 10-15 minutes of ordering. Pricing wise, it's average. I got fried rice for around $15. I found the rice to be a little stale. After a few bites, I found it hard to digest and felt pretty crappy afterwards. This is a hole in the wall dive restaurant located in a strip mall. They do lots of carryout. We came here an hour before closing. There's only about 4-5 small tables. Not good for large groups. We ordered 4 dishes, fried turnip cake, ok crispy beef, fried squid tentacles and tiger shrimp congee. We were very happy with all the choices. We asked for crispy turnip cakes. She must not have had the request much but she tried her best. She doesn't dredge the cakes in cornstarch so it wasn't all breading. Some of the pieces came out crispy, but not all. It was still good. The women that took our order also cooked some of the dishes. She gave us a good suggestion of the Ok crispy beef. It was more than Ok, it was delicious. Flavorful and crispy. There was a nice little tangy sauce that was good. It wasn't a gravy and the beef wasn't swimming in it. It was slightly coated and so tasty. I could have ordered a plate just for me. We like squid so we tried the fried squid tentacles. It was seasoned well and crispy. It was worth the eats. The last dish was tiger shrimp congee. The congee has a nice taste of shrimp and quite a few tiger shrimp in the bowl. For 3 adults and 2 kids, it was more than enough food. I've been searching for a congee restaurant west of Markham and east of Mississauga. This area is barren of good Chinese food options for the most part. Ann's peaked my interest after reading their positive reviews. Upon arrival, Ann's kitchen aromas were worth drooling over. Our hopes were raised. Our takeout feast for two was ready at the counter. Ann's Special Fried Rice was tasty though a bit dry, and came in a generous portion with shrimp, scallop and other seafood bits. HK Style Spicy Clam was infused with wok flavours and would've been delicious if not for the broken shells in every bite! The Chicken Congee was a safe bet, smooth with large chunks of tender meat. With congee, I almost always order Deep Fried Calamari, and theirs was quite comparable to the other more well-known restaurants. However, their Deep Fried Chicken did not impress the KFC fan in our household (my wife lol)... the meat was too dry, the dark crispy skin was over-fried, and tasted just bland overall. Sadly I didn't get to meet the friendly Ann, and food was mostly mediocre on this visit. I came for takeout because the restaurant was said to have limited dine-in tables. 2020-01-18. Ann's Congee. Vaughan, ON. So I've had this place bookmarked for quite some time now and during one of the worse days to be on the road, we decide that we want to go out for lunch. Looking for some comfort Cantonese dishes, we opted to knock off one on my list. Located in the Dufferin and Centre Street area, Ann's Congee is located in a plaza on the North side of Centre street, between Dufferin and Bathurst streets. The place is absolutely tiny. With seating for only about 12, their MO is definitely carry out. When we arrived, the place was empty. But then again the streets are covered with more than a foot of snow, and they only have three tables in the entire place. We seated ourselves and a moment later someone came out to greet us. While there is a menu, it's also on their walls. Pictures of their most popular dishes with corresponding numbers for easy ordering. I know, it's kinda ghetto, but it greatly expedites the process of turning customers over. The lady that greeted us gave me a sense of déjà vu, but I couldn't place my finger on it. We spent quite a few minutes going over the menu looking for a good vegetable dish and when we couldn't find anything that tickled out appetites, we decided to ask what was fresh in their inventory. In speaking with our server, she asked what we were looking for. We told her the type of veggies we were kinda craving, what complementary ingredients, the type of sauce, and the style of cook. She said they can accommodate! We ordered a Cantonese Chow Mein, a Dry Fried Flat Rice Noodle with Beef, Salt and Pepper Squid, and the custom vegetable dish with beef. As the food came out and we ate, it was as I remembered it. Ahhhh comfort food... we were making small talk with our server, and the déjà vu was killing me. All of a sudden I remembered how I knew that face! This lady often served us at Congee Wong! When I blurted it out, she laughed and confirmed that she recognized us, yes, since my kids were just babies. Obviously she had left CW and started her own business, and I was happy for her success (Ann's Congee has been in business for about three years now). The food was less salty than CW, but the flavours were just as good. Portion and price point are on par with CW as well. With these things on par, my preference would be to support the small fry. This will probably be my new goto place for comfort Cantonese. 4 stars overall. Before leaving, I also learned that she was only a minority partner in the business and that the former Head Chef at CW is the majority stakeholder... no wonder the food is so similar! Very cheap and the flavor exceeds the price for it's well. Good food for the price, but not spectacular food if you don't count price. The fish maw soup was the best dish I tried. The thickness was just right and the flavor of the fish maw, crab meat, and egg whites were extracted well. The stir fried lobster with ginger and green onion was nice and flavorful. The lobster was surprisingly sweet given the very low price of the meal (5 course banquet dishes for $52.99) The deep fried crispy chicken was okay -- the chicken was a little tough but the meat was still crispy and the dish was flavorful The deep fried pork chop with spicy salt and pepper had a nice crispy batter and a good mix of flavors, fairly standard. The stir fried chinese broccoli with garlic was a bit softer than other preparations, probably boiled before being stir fried, but still fairly good. Overall, a good value but don't expect the most refined flavors. The portion sizes are very large though so you'll be happy with plenty of leftovers. read more

This place is a very solid 4-4.5 out of 5 stars easily. This is more of a take out restaurant versus a restaurant with take out. In total there is probably seating for a total of 13 people, though that does not diminish the service at all. We were served by Ann herself, who we happened to have the pleasure of meeting first at congee wong. Ann as always was very warm, welcoming, attentive and accurate. Her service, in terms of a Chinese restaurant is pretty darn good (often times I find HK style restaurants consistently lack in service), but Ann makes sure your taken care of. In terms of food, we found out that the chef also happens to have worked with Ann at the previous place mentioned, which would explain why there are quite a few similarities in terms of menu, as well as some new welcome additions. Again, the food seems to be as good, if not better then congee wong. So if your a fan of congee wong, or any of the other numerous congee places in Toronto (congee queen, congee wong, mr congee to name a few) you will also be a fan of Anns congee, though there is the added bonus of Anns excellent service. And as I mentioned, the food is as good, if not better then any of the named restaurants. This little place is a very welcome addition to this area, though I wish they had a full restaurant. But in the mean time, this is a nice little 'mom 'n pop' style place and is definitely worth a try if your in the area. As an added bonus, Anns Congee is even cheaper (by a dollar or two) for each dish that she makes vs any of the other mentioned congee places. Good service? Good food? Good price? Maybe I came here with high expectation after reading all these 4 and 5 star reviews?! I would recommend Ann's Congee as a solid takeout place for some decent Chinese food in the area. Love the huge menu and the selection they offers. But the "restaurant" itself is really small. I would not suggest dining in especially if you are a group of more than 4 people. I do prefer Cantonese food serves right from the wok to the table as wok hay is really important. Chicken Congee ($5.50) was quite good. They also have lunch combo that you can order from chalkboard in the restaurant. Ann the owner is really nice. Her friendliness give this place a really homey feel. read more

I love finding mom and pop gems. This place is small but packs good flavors for a reasonable price. We love soft shell crab fried rice and have finally another place that does it well. The shrimp Chow Mein was also really good. They didn't skimp on ingredient. Excellent value. They do hey a little overwhelmed when it's busy... So please be patient with the very nice family. As a personal preference... I'd suggest reducing the batter in bagged items... Treat it more like a light tempura. Just enough to change the texture but not so much that it add 25% to the volume. I came by Ann's Congee after reading all of the great reviews on Yelp. The restaurant is pretty small, with only 4 tables. Behind the counter is the kitchen and you will often hear what sounds like a garbage disposal (I have no idea what it is) going off every so often. The menu is pretty extensive. There's a TV that display specials. On Sunday, you can receive free egg rolls with orders over $15. I ordered the seafood super bowl congee, the stir fried baby bok choy, the house sticky fried rice, and the fried calamari. The congee comes in a very large bowl and it was very tasty and just as good as any congee I've had in the past. The shrimp in the congee are large and taste fresh. I enjoyed the house sticky fried rice, which is not on the menu. The peanuts are so tasty, but the preserved meats make it saltier than I prefer. The fried calamari was also tasty. It had a little hint of spiciness and a bit salty. Dinner always came with a dessert. On Chinese New Year, I had a gelatin cake with goji berries. On a separate evening, I had fruit. The customer she was referring to already ordered. On top of that she forgot an item on our order. One congee was made right and the other one was so watered down. This is the one she forgot. She rushed it when she realize she missed the order. When I told Ann she said that's the way it is when you mix it. It gets watery I told her I DIDNT EVEN MIX IT. Note: Restaurant is dated and very small. There are only 4 tables, so not the best atmosphere for a large party. Based on my observations, this place is more suited for takeout than dine-in. We ordered 3 dishes: Grouper fish with sweet corn (on rice), Stir-fried ho fun with beef and black bean sauce, & turnip cakes. ALL 3 dishes were huge in portion. According to server, turnip cakes are made in-house and stir-fried with scrambled eggs, shrimp, and were a bit spicy. All of the dishes were above average in taste. The only lady who served us and worked up at front was quite friendly! Bill was just under $30, including taxes for those 3 dishes. So pretty affordable! We decided to try this small restaurant after reading about it here on Yelp. We were greeted by Ann. A very friendly woman that told us to sit wherever we wanted to. Seating is limited to only four tables; two tables for two people and two tables for five or six people. We ordered the sliced beef Congee, fried dough stick, Cantonese chow mein and the spicy fried turnip squares. Just after we ordered we heard the roar of the gas cooker in the kitchen. The chef was in action ! Shortly after our food came out. The Congee wasn't bad but me personally I like I smoother texture. The Congee has a course texture. Other than that it had a good taste. The dough stick was fresh and crispy. Not oily at all. The noodles were cooked real good with a generous amount of veggies, meat and seafood. The turnips were made perfect. Not too crisp on the outside and tender soft on the inside. Each item ordered gave us a generous serving. We couldn't even eat half of it. So excited to have this restaurant just around the corner. Ann is very warm and welcoming and genuinely sweet. She greeted us at the door and took our order, she let us know that delivery was available and offered to take our address and information for future deliveries. Food is your standard Chinese takeout but made with some extra love. We tried the lemon chicken, fried rice noodles with beef and salt and pepper chicken wings. The wings had a spice that we weren't crazy about but the lemon chicken was crispy and lightly breaded with a delicious lemon sauce and the noodles were fresh and flavourful. The portions are large enough to share and we had more than enough food for 3 people. We will certainly be going back when we need a lemon chicken fix. They also have some other dishes that we'd like to try before settling on a regular order. The price are good for the quality and you feel good giving business to someone like Ann who is so appreciative of her customers. It's a real treat to get some real Hong Kong style Chinese food in Thornhill. I picked up take out for my family and I, but would also dine in. Don't let the small space and limited seating dissuade you. This is the essence of the small diner, to eat among the fragrance and sounds of an HK kitchen. The food was excellent, and had enough "Wok Qi" to properly stir fry the broccoli, green and crisp. Ingredients were really fresh tasting, the seasoning is light, and feels healthy. The congee tasted clean, had a nice amount of chew, not just salty liquid. It was very pleasant! There's a wide selection of dishes here which shows the flexibility and range of the chef and kitchen. From lobster and seafood to spring rolls and fried noodles, this wide variety likens the menu of a larger restaurant. We will be back to try more, and I would be happy to recommend Ann's Congee to my HK father-in-law. Update: Father-in-law approved. We tried a few other different dishes. However, we went back for their other dishes, like fried pork chops, fried noodles with mixed vegetables and stir fried vegetable with tofu, and found them to be just at par with other fast food joints.
