The owner was SO DANG NICE! We caught him as he just finished closing up and I already promised gelato for the night. He was definitely in a rush and made time for our small gelato order. I don't know why no one has talked about this place. It's such a cute location with an amazing patio. On top of that, the gelato is SO SMOOTH AND DELICIOUS. Between the service and the gelato (flavor and choices), the 20 minute drive we made solely to come to Congelato was not worth it. It's located in a charming square in Old Helotes. On an early Saturday evening the atmosphere was familial and relaxing... until we walked into Congelato. Two teenage girls were enjoying a snack and were putting food into their mouths with their fingers. Good for them. Take a break! But when they got up, only one of them washed her hands. The other (the dark haired young lady) asked us what she could get started for us. I asked her if she could wash her hands before serving us and the look she gave me could've killed. It was a look of incredulity, irritation, and "I know you didn't!" But I did, and I meant it. I asked her if that were a problem and she said no, but that they usually put on gloves, to which I responded, "That you have to grab with dirty hands." Why are we even having these discussions during Covid? We ordered our gelatos, but when they handed us a pager to let us wait outside, we decided against it. I didn't have much confidence that they wouldn't do anything to our gelatos. We paid a little over $25 for three small and 1 medium. Still left a tip despite the fact my entire family was now offended at the way she responded to me because we're decent people. The mouthfeel and flavors of the gelatos were underwhelming. When comparing to other gelaterias here, like South Alamode and Paciugo, as well as those we've had in Italy, this came nowhere near what we've come to expect. The texture was closer to milk ice than gelato and the coffee and chocolate tasted of decreased quality ingredients. All things considered, the four of us all agreed we'd rather make the trek down to Southtown for gelato than to come back for bad service and so-so gelato. Edited to address the owner's comment: -the customers "interviewed" were not us, nor where the ones he's referring to even in the store at the time of the interaction. Video camera can prove that so I invite them to post it. - the owner went back and forth with me in messages where his story about the rude employee and her serving us changed 3 times. If she had no intention of serving us, why did she ask, "What can I get started for you?" -the owner told me he is half-Black. As a Black man, he should know how detrimental it is to use verbiage like "you intimidated her," "your were aggressive," as he did in private messages. I asked a food service worker to wash her hands before serving us. There's nothing aggressive or intimidating about that. - if a food inspector witnessed what we did and asked the same question, would they be considered "disrespectful" as I was called in private messages? - not once did the owner address the way the employee reacted to my valid question. He can prove I wasn't lying about the way she responded to me when I asked her to wash her hands, which she had not done, nor was making moves to do so. Yet he wants me to give feedback at the time when I was shot dirty looks after asking for basic sanitation to be practiced? Okay. read more

While enjoying our sweets at a picnic table outside the establishment, we saw Steve Browne (retired channel 12 weatherman) walking into "Congelato" with three walking sticks. He had gone to give the owner Yvette one that he had made. As he was leaving we struck up a conversation with Steve letting him know that we missed him as our weatherman; he jokingly said that he is loving doing whatever he wants to whenever he wants to and showed us the two remaining walking sticks. They were very well made and he had signed and dated each of them. He said he was going to start selling them! I don't know what I enjoyed more.... the staff or the actual ice cream! When my family and I walked in, we were instantly greeted and felt welcomed. The employee (she was a college student) was engaging and wasted no time educating us on the product. I truly felt that she not only enjoyed her job, but liked us (and that's a rare find nowadays). After we chatted for a bit, the owner walked in and our experience got even better. He was so sweet and passionate about his ice cream that I couldn't help but be excited to be here (and come back). Now let's get to the best part.... The Ice Cream... Holy moly was it good! I'm going to say this right now... The BEST gelato I've ever had (and I've lived all over this country)! The gelato was creamy but so flavorful. I tasted the white chocolate strawberry and I actually tasted REAL white chocolate and strawberries. The portions were perfect and the flavor was spot on. I ultimately went went with the lemon sorbet and it was perfectly refreshing on the warm day. It was tart and sweet and I'd eat that stuff EVERY day if my waste line would let me. It was so good that I seriously don't feel the need to try any other place. I live in Helotes so it's easily accessible to me, but do yourself a favor and get here. It's worth the drive! read more

Truly the pinnacle of anything considered "hidden gem" Congelato wasn't a difficult discovery, rather it had its own unique secluded location and scenery. Very difficult to spot while driving but was easy to spot once in the vicinity. I personally, have been to Italy and have tried multiple sorbets and Italian ice cream. Since there was an excess amount of ice cream shops, (I'm talking about one in every corner and sometimes in carts) it's sometimes hard to find one that blows your mind. I had a great conversation with the owner, Isaac, truly a friendly person that's willing to share his love and passion for sorbets & gelato with others. He went out of his way to explain his flavors and help me find my perfect serving of ice cream. *FUN FACT* Congelato has ~57 flavors! (Although he can only present ~15) The owners switches out flavors from time to time creating diversity of flavors to their customers. Congelato does not have chairs inside, but rather, share multiple tables with other businesses around them. I had raspberry cheese cake and mango sorbet w/ some goodies on top. 7$ Cheesecake tasted amazing without a doubt but the mango sorbet was to die for. Definitely recommend. When i tried their natural blend mango sorbet, i knew i had to choose it. You could taste how fresh the sorbet was. Overall, the ice cream itself was phenomenal. I had reminisced about it on my drive home. What really caught me was their locations. You're given the opportunity to enjoy great ice cream in a peaceful setting. Really cute shop! The gelato and sorbet is AMAZING:) My boyfriend got the trio, which is 3 average size scoops in a really cute tray that divides into three individual slots. The flavors change regular and also to what's in season according to the guy working. Everything is natural and no preservatives. My boyfriend got pistachio, cinnamon and vanilla gelato! This is good gelato. I have had gelato just as good at other gelato places. The reason why I'm giving them 4 stars is because I think it is overpriced but if you don't mind spending about $35 treating a family of 5 for gelato, then you'll enjoy it. I just thought my kids would have enjoyed store bought ice cream just as much and the rest of the $ could go to their college fund. Or I could save the $ and use it on groceries. I'm sorry to be cheap, but our family is on a budget. This is something else I didn't like: the lady owner tried to put all the gelato in a way that there was mostly air on the bottom but it kinda look like there was more on the top, I know that trick, I do it to my kids so they don't have as much sugar. I observed every movement and she did it every single time. Very much overpriced. We went there with friends. This family got theirs first and went outside to eat. Then it was our turn, and the couple who own this place switched and it took a while to get ours served. Then someone from a shop near by stopped by and they chatted for a while, while we were waiting with our 3 young kids in the tiny shop.
