There are obvious niceties to a franchise: Accepts credit cards Anytime Bathroom (I just walk in and go) Large selection Free Wi-Fi But then there are the reasons I will never take this place seriously: Untrained staff - No idea how to prepare food. Serving stale, sloppy dishes. - On their cell phones. - Doesn't monitor coffee to make a new brew. Really bad music on the radio. The coffee, is horrendous. But that may be because I am spoiled by great NYC cafes, and the amazing baristas inhabiting them. Walk across the street to DUB pies. You will get the best cup of coffee you've ever had, with a great staff. I have been to Connecticut Muffin many times, so I've had an opportunity to truly get a sense for what this place is like. If you want just normal pastries and treats, CM is for you. That's what they are good at. They get in a shipment of food off the truck, and it's put on the rack. It has sugar, butter, and wheat. Hard to screw up. Buy it. But this place, to me, should be located somewhere in the suburbs, where it can't insult the competitive New Yorker's palate. Love the way they design the places, and love their Paninis. I am here usually Tuesdays after work, and I love to stop the rush for an hour or so, open My laptop and just work enjoying good sandwich and good coffee. I've never sampled their pastries here. The coffee though is not bad. I had a lack of caffeine induced head ache and waltzed in here this weekend for that rare cup of iced coffee with skim milk, no sugar. They had a vanilla hazelnut roast that was pretty tasty. I say rare because I drink about 8 cups of black coffee a day, no cream/no sugar ever. Period. But I am always tempted by a rare latte or iced coffee. Anyway, they are always busy here because its right by the theatre so if you want quiet this is not the coffee shop for you. If you like hanging out with a little clutter, perfect. I make my own coffee during the week to bring to work, even though there are several great coffee places I can walk to. So on the weekend? I'm lazy, it's time to buy coffee and that's just how it's going to be! Yes, the coffee at Dub is better, but it's also more expensive. Connecticut Muffin has decent coffee, and they have fair trade varieties. It's getting easier to find fair trade coffee elsewhere, but I've come to have a special place in my heart for CM. I stopped by today simply because I was too lazy to trek back to Manhattan after a meeting this afternoon. When I walked by I noticed a few tables occupied with people working on their laptops --- that always means complimentary wifi. I found a table and then went to place my order. I kept it simple and just ordered a toasted onion bagel with cream cheese and an iced green tea. The bagel was fresh and tasty. The tea was strong. It also only cost me a few dollars, and since I've got to watch my budget now, that was a good thing. It's a nice little shop. It's got tons of seats and tables. Tons of plugs for all the people like me who come armed with their computers. There is even an ATM in the place if you run out of money. It's at the roundabout across from Prospect Park. It's a nice cafe that has a neighborhood feel about it even though it's a chain. The people who work there are the warm and friendly type, but they're not rude. They get a lot traffic, so it's pretty matter of fact. If I'm in the area again, I'd definitely stop by. I kept my order simple and was happy. read more

After moving to the neighborhood and realizing I couldn't "borrow" my neighbors' internet in the days before the cable guys could make it to my new place, I thought I was in trouble. I didn't want to walk all the way to Park Slope with my computer! I was lucky enough to find this place just around the corner from my apartment. For the atmosphere and location, this is a pretty good place. There are minimal amounts of strollers (huge plus!) and a lot of regulars. Its a pretty big space. My guess is that on a Saturday or Sunday it is packed, but right now its Friday around 10:30am and I can actually hear Annie Lennox serenading me from the speakers and have seen only 1 child in a stroller. The coffee is certainly not New York's best, but for the convenience and relaxing atmosphere I will continue to frequent. read more

Very good iced coffee, iced tea and lemonade here. I'm not a huge fan of their hot coffee, but plenty of people get it here, so try it and decide for yourself. I never have had any of their sandwiches or breakfast/lunch items, etc. But the muffins and cookies are good. Staff is friendly and after a while, you don't even have to tell them what you want, they know already. Always a plus. Usually, there is some seats in outside and plenty of room inside. Looking for a bagel and you are across the street from the west end of Prospect Park, this is where I would go. I would only go here to grab a bagel, fruit, or a drink and then head to the park. Have any of you ever been in an R.V. for two days straight? We rolled into town after a 2 day drive from Atlanta, GA, and were pretty much desperate for coffee of any sort. Prospect Park is great parking for an R.V. for free, so the three of us descended upon Connecticut Muffin like a hoard of locusts to devour anything in our path. The coffee here is alright, but the pastry I had was positively delicious. I am giving this place three stars because you can pretty much throw cinnamon on anything and I'll love it and also they had free wifi (after you get the password). But -2 for the situation of the coffee and the fact that their bathroom was absolutely dismal. read more

Foreign object in a chocolate cupcake!! I bought a chocolate cupcake from this place earlier tonight after getting pizza nearby. I ate a very small amount of it on the way to the park, and planned to finish it later when I was home. I took it out of the little to go container to eat while watching TV just now, and found a long piece of sharp, clear plastic in the piece of cupcake in my mouth! I've become one of those typical (and perhaps stereotypical) slopers who routinely drags his laptop into the local cafe, in this case Connecticut Muffin. My primary reason for doing so is the location, which is perfect for a cafe and very likely one of the main reasons for the traffic this cafe enjoys. CT Muffin has great espresso, even if their regular coffee is quite average. Their baked goods are also always fresh, no doubt helped by the sheer volume of business. If you visit this cafe routinely, you'll likely observe how quickly things move off their shelves. Regulars will also note the staff shows a better than expected ability to remember customers' preferences and ordering habits. That said, I would expect a cafe with the word "muffin" in its name would offer stellar muffins. They are solid -- but I'm more prone to think that the variety of muffins, rather than the quality, is what lends the place its name. But then, neither do I understand the hysteria over the WV's Magnolia Bakery. (Really folks, what's the big deal? There are countless alternative places that offer equal or better products). Personally, I find CT Muffin's scones are a vastly better choice than the muffins. (And, frankly, Parco Cafe on 7th Ave and 14th St. has all of their baked goods beat, but doesn't offer the hours, space, or views). Also, if you should show up here for coffee and a muffin with a friend, be prepared to break a $20. Apparently the price of flour weighs more heavily on these folks than on some other area cafes. read more

Excellent family owned, Brooklyn based coffee shop chain. All the spots share the neighborhood vibe that they share, but the Prospect Park location is my most common stop. Love stopping by after riding the bike path around the park. Now that the Spring is here, get to partake in their delicious iced coffees. Their hot coffee is a rich dark roast, which really translates well to their iced version. Baked goods are great too! Such a pleasure to grab a coffee and either snag a seat outside, or walk across the street to the park. I find that franchises are a little iffy. It doesn't mean that I don't go to Starbucks or McDonald's, it just means that I know I'm about to buy something that I can get anywhere. Connecticut Muffin is a little different. I know they have multiple locations (not like Starbucks or McDonald's) but it still manages to feel like your neighborhood bakery slash cafe. The pastries are really good (Their Almond or Chocolate Croissant or their Cranberry Yogurt muffin are pretty tasty) and their sandwiches are excellent as well (their Roasted Chicken Sandwich is simple and delicious). Also, the complimentary WiFi they provide their customers is great. As a guy that works from home, being able to work OUTSIDE the house every once in a while is literally a breath of fresh air, and I can do that from Connecticut Muffin. read more

The coffee is perfectly acceptable, the baked goods are pretty good, and some things are great. I loved the white chocolate raspberry scone, whereas the cakes I've had were pretty dry. We love the soups, which sometimes seem like the only thing my toddler will reliably eat. I have had a couple of sandwiches - the turkey and tuna were tasty, but the PB&J was disgusting (dry bread, way too much filling). I'm giving a four star based on its location and fun due to all the dog owners there on the weekend. The coffee is ok, so is the food. But it's nice to walk there with your dog, grab a coffee, and sit there and meet other dogs and dog owners on the benches outside. Inside, they offer free wifi and a separate section to sit down. Some of these folks don't leave, but just plop down if you find a spot. It's sort of a separate area, where they can focus away from the folks who want to have a real "kaffee klatch" (coffee talk/gossip ; ) When you're done with your coffee, go take a walk in the park, right across the street! read more

This place is a waste of money. The customer service is horrible. I asked if I could set up shop here with my laptop, no problem I was told. After I bought my coffee and muffin I asked for the wifi. I was told that there is no wifi on the weekends. I asked for a refund and was not given one. I amazed at how they left out the wifi info when I asked about my laptop. I am giving CT Muffin 3 stars (as opposed to 2 or 1) because I frequent the place quite a bit. The reason is that their Wi-fi works almost all the time there is never any pressure to free up a table. It is a pretty large space and if you get a table in the back you can stay there all day plugged into the multiple outlets. The staff is friendly but not pretentious. That said, the coffee is mediocre, the baked goods are mediocre, the sandwiches are mediocre. None of it is terrible (except their rice crispies treats which are horrifying), none of it is great. It doesn't cost a fortune so I don't really mind. If you want good coffee go across the street to Dub Pies, you will pay more and there is limited seating but it is way better. If you are like me, a permafreelancer in Windsor Terrace, CT Muffin is the only local place. read more

I come to this place every time I go to my firehouse. I always get the same thing which is a peanut butter jelly sandwich and somehow I end up paying a different price every time. I recently checked my statements and realized I paid 9.50 for a PB&J and a bottle water. I went back and they admitted to making a mistake. the coffee is ept. the muffins are nothing to write home about. i enjoy sitting outside or by the window and watching the ever changing world go by. when i first frequented this place i would see all the local characters including the irish step dancing girls and the smiling man who is unable to speak yet manages to convey his message through hand motions and ballet like pantomime gestures. such a dapper gent. of course all things change but some things remain including the goodness of their ginger cookies. 3+1/2 stars... read more

My boyfriend asked for the daily special coffee that was written on the chalkboard and was told they were out and only had house coffee brewed. I asked for the strawberry banana smoothie, only to be told that they didn't have banana- I was really craving banana so this was a big let down! Instead, I ordered the acai berry smoothie. Between my boyfriend and I, literally 3 sips were taken. It was awful. It tasted like old figs- no exaggeration here. When I attempted to ask for paper towels to wipe the disgusting table (not my job anyway, right?) the guy behind the counter actually put his hand up to shut me up before I could even get the question out. Hmm... never thought i'd be saying this, bc their quality in food items is terrific. It was the service, at this particular location, that left me with a bad taste. It was a wkday mid afternoon, packed as usual. My sis-in-law, baby niece and I went for a cup of coffee and some chit chat, when the only table available clearly needed a wipe down. So I politely asked the man working behind the counter if he could clean it for us. Don't you know he told me to use the paper towels and clean it myself! So I asked for the rag and said I would clean it, so he wouldn't have to leave his comfort zone and clean for his customer. I cleaned it with no fuss, and later when it was time for me to pick up our paninis, he left them on the counter for me to wait for the panini fairy to come and tell me they were ready. HOW RUDE! After a long walk through Prospect Park on Memorial Day I was tired, had to use a restroom that didn't smell like a hoarse farm, and wanted something fun to eat or drink. From the outside this place looked cute and un-Paxish so what the hell. The facts: 1. the bathroom was just as disgusting as the bathrooms in Prospect Park. 2. there was NO soap in the bathroom, a customer asked how THEY wash their hands and I am not sure what their answer was because I could not hear it. Also, the toilet paper was not in the holder and was sopping wet. I used a napkin that I THANK GOD had in my purse. 3. I already ordered my drink otherwise I would have walked away after seeing the bathroom, but because of this I did not get any food items. 3. A pile of about 15 muffins with signs in front of them that did not look like they corresponded with the muffin types, a dried out pear pastry which looked like it had been there for a very long time. 4. My Chai Spice Frappe was good but not too frozen like Starbucks 5. My boyfriend enjoyed his iced Chai 6. They have a nice picture window with a great view if you are the lucky one who gets to sit there 7. They have a nice refrigerated selection of drinks in their case. My Advise: 1. There is this stuff called Bleach, scrub the bathroom, get a new functional toilet paper roll, and hand dryer 2. If you are going to go so far as to have a key to the bathroom make sure your employees give a fuck and keep it clean....there was NO excuse for this. The owner should be embarrassed 3. Most people come to coffee shops to either work or talk, so maybe take a cue from Starbucks and go with a more low-key, quiet playlist/station. Honestly, that's my only issue.
