I've gone twice now and both times, the employees I worked with were nice enough and helpful but there was definitely a sense of them looking down on me for not being tech savvy. Both times, however, they set me to a different store because, both times, their prices were extremely high. I appreciate them understanding my financial situation as a poor college kid but it's a little ridiculous that they wanted to charge me $215 and tax for a cable in my computer (the place they sent me cost $75 flat). My extremely poor experience was with the after hours phone service. I called because, when I took my mac in to get looked at, the gentleman took out the very small USB drive I had and it was the last place I saw it. The gentleman who answered the phone said he "knew nothing about that because it's after hours" and I have to call during normal business hours. His tone was incredibly rude and made it seem like he thought I was crazy for calling about such a little thing. And then he hung up on me without asking if there was anything else I needed, if there was anything else he could do, or even saying goodbye. I know that's a little detail but in the service industry, it's usually a common curtesy. It really wouldn't have been that big of a deal but I only called 30 mins before they open on a weekday and assumed someone would already be in the office. Well then. Before I picked up my computer yesterday, I would have given the Connection Point 4, and maybe, 5 stars. But, apparently being the only place in town that can repair under Applecare gives you credence to be insanely disrespectful to customers. I've worked in customer service on both ends for years, and this was the *worst* experience I've ever had. When I was phoned saying that my computer was fixed, I asked about the data; I was told that the hard drive was going to be blank, and that to transfer my data would cost $75. I told them to transfer my data due to a handbook chapter I am writing that wasn't backed up, which I needed. When I went to go pick up the computer, I just wanted to alert the tech that I was never told that my data would not be transferred, and that I think it should be policy to alert customers in clear language that the hard drive would be blank. I had my external hard drive with me when I dropped it off, and had I been told that the data would not be transferred, I would have backed it up then and the whole situation would have been avoided. At this point, the manager of the Connecting Point came out of the back room on the offensive. He stated that anyone who knew enough to bring a computer in for repairs should know that data would not be transferred with a hard drive replacement. I find it extremely rude to basically insinuate that I am not intelligent enough to understand his business. I was then informed that informing the customer is policy, and that policy was violated with my interaction. At that point, he told me that it was my fault for not understanding his assumption and his employee violating protocol, and would not even apologize for the miscommunication. I paid the $75, and the employee I had originally been talking to apologized for my extremely poor experience, specifically with the rudeness of the manager. Basically, kudos to you, employee who apologized. The work is quality, Laptar is working great (Yeah, it reminds me of Reptar from the Rugrats,) but given the choice I would not patronize them. read more

My Macbook Pro started acting weird with screen flickering and freezing. Looking up online and performing a basic triage suggested that it was an video card problem. I called Apple Support and they told me that I could bring the laptop to Connecting Point as it's an authorized repair shop and it would be covered by my warranty. I brought the laptop to Connecting Point, explaining the symtom with a video I recorded showing the screen flickering. The guy also believed that it's likely a video card issue and the replacement would be covered by warranty. However, the next day I received a call to pickup my laptop. This time it was another person and he said the problem was due to hard drive corruption. Based on my initial triaged, I was quite certain that it wasn't the hard drive fault. But the guy insisted and I gave the benefit of the doubt. I was $60 for hard drive failure because the drive I had was third-party and won't be covered by AppleCare. That's fair if the problem was due to hard drive. After I came back, I googled for a way to run hardware diagnosis and found that every Mac includes Apple Hardware Test with the installation CD. I ran it and within minutes it showed that the video card is faulty. I brought the machine back and let them know that the problem wasn't the harddrive but the video card. At first, without letting me explain, argued that if they said it was hard drive then it's definitely the hard drive, until I mentioned the code they were ok to try to run the diagnostic software and found the exact same error code. Although it is obvious that the problem was due to the video card and it will be covered by AppleCare. They didn't refund me $60 I paid for their "mis-diagnostic", but rather came up with irrelevant/rude arguments with me. There was a problem and they did not find it for whatever reason, and they thinks it's reasonable to charge me for that. So do yourself a favor, if you have an issue with your Mac, just send it to Apple directly. Although it might takes 2 days more for the shipping, you will be dealing with a lot more respectful and professional persons, who won't try to rip you off. read more

Whoa. If I had checked Yelp before calling Connecting Point to see if they would install RAM on my computer, I might not have tried them. I'm actually glad I didn't, because I had a great experience. I called Connecting Point on the fly, late on a Friday afternoon, because my computer was running really slow. After taking other steps it was obvious that the stalling & pinwheeling was because a lack of adequate RAM. The guy who answered (who was the owner) was brief in letting me know that yes, they have the RAM cards in stock, and that yes, they could install it while I waited, and right away. I could have driven out to King of Prussia, or Philadelphia, or Pittsburgh to take it to an Apple Store. I could have sent it off to Apple. Hell, I could have bought the memory from Tiger Direct and put it in myself. But I am willing to pay more for convenience and speed - as this computer is vital to my work right now - so I decided to check them out. And I don't trust myself to do surgery on my computer. When I walked in, the owner remembered me and immediately took the computer, opened it, and added the needed RAM. He put the old RAM in the new packaging and gave it back. He closed it up and tested it, and it worked great. The whole process took 15 minutes, and the price was reasonable. My computer is much, much faster now. The added hardware has a lifetime warranty. I chatted with the owner for a bit, who let me know that he's been working on computers in State College since 1982, and has been at the current location (next to Appalachian Outdoors on Allen) since 1999. The actual store is a cluttered and messy basement location. There are parts and cables everywhere. It has more the feel of a workshop than a retail store. But they did good, quick work with a minimum of hassle, so I can't complain. Apparently, being an Authorized Apple Service Provider is no joke. I'm glad State College has one. This is basically a couple of techs not trained in service but with and by computers. They know their stuff, but, ahem, they have a very technical view of things. I've bought stuff from them a few times, and each time it's gone fairly well. I've had stuff sent in, and things got done but disks were not fully backed up, but perhaps as well as could be done given the disk. But, it has that edge to it that means that the interaction could go badly if you are in the wrong, and it's entirely possible that the boss would yell at you, and a more than 50% chance you are wrong and a 10% chance you deserve it because you have made a dunderhead move and it's in your interest long term to be yelled at (or so they would think, caring about you (reminds me of Herwigs, but less willfully rude). They are not gracious but are smart and well read. I would and have gone back. I do recommend them. read more

These people may or may not know what they're doing. I know way too little about technology to know if they're ripping me off or not. What I do know is how incredibly unkind and unprofessional they are. I dropped my computer off for a diagnosis-- not even a repair-- on a Wednesday afternoon. I called on a Friday morning and was rudely told that it would still take at least another business day for answers-- that's five days without a laptop all just for a diagnosis. The tech rudely hung up on me without saying anything else. These people have a huge advantage over other repair stores because they are the ONLY authorized Apple repair/retailer in all of State College yet they work the bare minimum hours- 9:30a-6p and no weekends at all. Come on. They must have a huge volume of repairs to do and barely any time to do it. Ridiculous. Clearly there's a stingy boss around who doesn't want to pay any more wages at the expense of horrible customer service and awful professionals. read more

Took a laptop that wouldn't turn on into the store and asked several times whether or not there would be any charge or diagnostic fee to have the laptop looked at. Salesgirl told my daughter each time that there would be no charge and that my daughter would be notified before any work began that would require payment. My daughter even called to clarify this when she noticed the small print on her receipt that said a diagnostic fee would be charged to look at computers. Again she was assured, no fee would be charged. Two days later my daughter was told there was water damage to the battery and because water damage is not covered by her Applecare, there would be a $60 diagnostic fee for just determining the problem. This was exactly what she was told WOULD NOT happen. Very misleading business practice. Salegirl and owner became very agitated and rude when questioned about their policy and the fact that the fee was not explained clearly before work began. Be aware that if your computer issue is determined to not be a problem covered by your Applecare, you will be charged a $60 diagnostic fee. This was never told to my daughter. Apple stores don't charge a "diagnostic" fee. Save yourself the hassle and the money and just take your Apple product to an actual Apple store. read more

The week before finals, the hinge on my macbook broke, leaving me with a computer that either wouldn't stay open or would fall completely back, and also causing the screen to blackout intermittently. Needless to stay, with all of my class notes on my laptop, I needed it to be reliable. I took it to Connecting Point to get the hinge fixed and left it there, only to receive a call that my computer was unable to be fixed and all of my data was lost and there was nothing that could be done. I recently took that computer to another Apple certified repair shop in State College where all of my data was recovered. DO NOT go to Connecting Point. The manager is so rude and the customer service is absolutely awful, prices are outrageous, and they aren't even interested in fixing your electronics. read more

Stay away! Run! They have finally lost their Apple Authorized Service Provider status. Yay!!!!! Yippee!!!! had taken my iMac and MacBook Pro in for service since they both were infected with a virus spread by bluetooth. The intake person (manager/owner) is a loud mouth obnoxious know it all & tells me there's no such thing. A tech came out and said they exist. Both MacBook & iMac needed new motherboards (approx $1200 each) and covered by AppleCare. After repaired, I got home and my iMac was acting funky. I ended up driving the 3 hours to Ross Park Apple Store in PBGH for re-repair. Apple calls to tell me whoever repaired it forgot to put some parts back in. WT*??? Of course the 'manager' or whoever he is at CX Point here in State College wouldn't even listen to my complaint nor look at the re-repair sheet from Apple. I made sure to make Apple well aware of these clowns. Be aware of the overpriced merchandise and the dump of a sales floor. My apologies to any of the qualified hard working techs there. read more

I don't know why people are calling the tech people here rude - I've been in twice to have Macbooks repaired and everyone has been polite, friendly and professional. They just don't do all the "customer is always right" bowing and scraping, which doesn't bother me because I don't need my butt kissed - just my machine fixed! They also repaired my computers promptly and I was extremely satisfied with the level of service. I only deducted one star because after my first visit the technician who did my intake got sick, and nobody called to notify when my machine was fixed - I had to call myself several times to figure it out. Connecting Point is the BEST! Dropped chocolate milk all over my Macbook Air keyboard on a Sunday morning and every place was closed. Went to PCQuickFIx monday morning and they told me it was completely ruined and I would need a Magician to get my data back. I decided to ignore all of the negative reviews online and take a chance on Connecting Point.. I wish I hadn't. Do not ignore all of the negative reviews. Connecting Point knows nothing about MacBooks. I took my laptop down there for a water damage problem. After a day of them diagnosing it (for doube the cost of most places) they had very little information other than that "my motherboard is fried". While I do not know a lot about MacBooks, I know that if everything on my laptop is working except the screen that the entire motherboard is not "fried". They put little to no effort in giving me any options other than me paying more than the laptop cost to fix it, or for them to "recycle it", which I quickly declined. It seemed like they wanted to make me believe my computer was worthless and they wanted to take advantage of it for parts. Go to Mull Information Systems on Fraser! We brought our daughters computer to their store since they are the only authorized Apple repair dealer in State College. Their technician said the computer was covered by AppleCare and also put it on our invoice, When my daughter and myself went to pick up the computer they charged us over $800 dollars. It was explicitly explained to the technician and the staff that we would not leave the computer if it wasn't covered under AppleCare.. What has transpired has been a nightmare it is the classic "bait and switch". The dishonesty and lack of integrity Mr. Albert has shown includes sending our credit card company a doctored invoice along with a letter full of other lies. We are in the process of rectifying this gross injustice Stephen Albert, the owner should be ashamed of trying to deceive college students from his alma mater . I came to this store three times. BTW, I would never buy apple computer any more since it was broken twice in two years. The first time, the link of the screen was broken and a guy said my computer was still in the plan so the repairment was free. That time, I am very satisfed with the service since it had been repaired very well. So next time, I obviously brought my broken hard drive there and it was repaired by a very tall guy. But after that repairement, the hard drive could not work after around one hour working, which never happened before. I doubted the tall guy used some old pieces on my hard drive. So I stopped by the store for repairing again but the tall guy said he did not find any problem and refused to repair it. I had to buy a new hard drive after that. That time, I was very disappointed. Since the store is very close to campus, and I brought my broken apple computer again because the sound of the computer was locked. I told a fat guy that I would stay here because I was concerned with the bad experience last time and wanted to watch the repairment. But the guy refused and said they could not repair when I was there. I have no idea why they would or could not repair when I was here. Is there any black box in the repairment? Knowledgeable staff, but definitely NOT customer service oriented in any way. I didn't get any sort of rudeness/attitude from any of the employees (like other reviewers mentioned), but their explanations on what exactly was wrong with my computer and what they were doing to fix it were very confusing and not easy to understand as a person who has little technical knowledge of computers. The thing that really pissed me off was that one of the employees called me and told me that the data on my old, damaged harddrive WAS recovered, however when I got to the store to pick everything up, it turned out that the data was NOT recovered and the employees weren't even sure whether or not it could even be saved, telling me that it could take "days, or maybe weeks" to find out for sure. Basically, the staff is very competent (even though they are apparently having issues with recovering my data, they are working hard on it and have tried a number of different methods to recover the data), but is very unprofessional when it comes to dealing with customers. read more

This place has been great in the past, but this time they were so bad that I would sooner drive my computer to another state than deal with their customer service. Or rather, lack thereof. I dropped my computer off on July 2nd, and called on three separate occasions to verify its status. Each time they had a different response -- it's open on the tech's desk but he's out, it's been sent to depot -- the third time I called I asked whether it had been returned from depot, which was the last thing I had been told. They asked to call me back, and when I was called, they informed me that "they had located my computer," and that the computer had been sitting on the shelf, untouched, for the past two weeks. Not a figurative two weeks -- literally, two full weeks. They said they could either send it out for repair (the way they led me to believe they already had), or return it to me unrepaired. Since the whole reason I made do without it for two weeks was because it was unworkable, I asked that they send it out for repairs. When they informed me that I would have to pay 25$ to have it shipped to me, since the delay on their end meant I would now be out of town, the man was rude and condescending when I asked that they pay as a gesture for the mistake on their part. I hardly think it unreasonable that as a gesture of customer service and apology they pay the 25$, but apparently they aren't big on service here. read more

My son, a PSU student had a Macbook charging cable stop working, and since it was covered under warranty, he took it to Connecting Point for replacement (Apple has them listed as the only authorized repair shop in State College). The people who work here told my son that it was HIS fault that the cable was broken and that he would have to pay $79 for a new one. My son was accused and yelled at about something that absolutely was NOT his fault so he left the store. With one week left of semester left, he will have to use a friends charger and we will exchange the cable at our Apple store at home. Apple employees are "genuises" in every respect and connecting Point should not be representing them!I will be calling Apple to report their unprofessionalism! They estimated a 1 or 2 day timeframe for battery replacement but it was done in 2 hours. Pricing is reasonable and the guy at the front desk (assuming the manager?) was funny and really nice. The connecting point is a messy, dirty room on one of the nicest streets in State College. Perhaps I am biased since I have worked in the customer service industry for over a decade now. First as an entry level employee and now as the owner of my own storefront business in the same town. I expect a decently high level of service when I enter an establishment in the town I grew up in and love. The owner is a man that has more than likely spent most of his life with a computer in front of his face since he has customer service skills akin to a blue screen of death. The younger technicians seem to be generally happy and are mostly friendly, but there are still times when I have called or dropped off a computer that the feeling I have gotten is one of annoyance. Perhaps I was pulling them away from an important guild meeting in WoW, or perhaps they had found the one ring and were too busy in the back of the room discussing how to dispose of it. I have taken my computers here more due to convenience, but I may try other places in the future in order to be helped more efficiently and friendly. The only reason for 2 stars is that at least the repairs that have been done have lasted. I do appreciate that. read more

i have personally been to connecting point multiple times in my 4 year tenure as a student here. I am overall very happy with the service i have recieved, they are an authorized apple service provider which is rare, and ive had them work on my computers both on and off warranty. While on warranty i couldnt of asked for a smoother experience and everything was perfect just dropped it off and picked it up next day. While off warranty i did have a bad experience with one of the worked which is why im giving 4/5 because he was rude and ended up charging me 60$ just to open up my computer, and its not the price thats the issue but the fact that he made it seem like it would be complimentary then 15 minutes later hands me this bill and tells me my computer is irreparable. After this i have gone back again and had great experiences. The owner, and any of the guys who have been there for a while are all great, and they carry a huuuge amount of apple parts already in store. Would and have recommended to a friend. read more

My iMac hard drive was just recalled so I contacted CP to have it replaced (as they are the authorized repair center in town). The first guy I spoke to, seemed like a young college student, was friendly enough and explained that they are getting a lot of calls for that and what would normally take 3-5 days is going to take 5-7 days. I asked if there was a deadline for getting this done, thinking that if I waited for the rush to be over I would have a better chance of it getting done sooner than the 5-7 days projected. He didn't know and put me on hold to inquire. We got disconnected and when I called back I got someone else. He turns out to be the owner and was insanely rude! He repeatedly interrupted me, wouldn't answer my question about replacement deadline. When I commented on his less than pleasant customer service manor, he got even more heated. I asked to speak to a manager and was told that he was the owner and if I didn't like what he was saying then don't bother giving him the business and then he hung up on me. I am a local business owner myself and I would NEVER talk to a customer like that EVER! No, I won't be giving him my business - I would rather drive to Lancaster to the Apple store (turns out there is also an authorized Apple repair in Millheim) then give this place any business. Besides, who knows what he would do to my computer while he had it in his possession. Reading the other reviews, sounds like this is the MO for this place/guy. * I contacted Apple, explained my situation and they are sending someone to my house to replace the hard drive, free of charge and at a time convenient for me! After being sold an adapter to migrate my 2008 Macbook to my 2013 Macbook Air that I was told would surely work, I found out that it did not work. Upon returning, it became clear neither the owner nor the workers knew the difference between 1394A and 1394B, and I was forced to either return and pay a restocking fee (really?! for an over-the-counter store?) or purchase an additional $15 adapter cable. Between that level of consumerist shenanigans and the general filthiness of the store and poor customer service, I am surprised Apple continues to count them among its authorized repair shops. I guess people like me are willing to lower standards in exchange for convenience. But with more time, I'll just order online from now on. read more

The staff there seem to know their stuff, but they need to take some classes in customer service. Every time I have called or gone in they always seem to be very annoyed by me being there or calling them. They make snarky comments and are not considerate of people's time. If there was anywhere else that was certified to handle Macs I would go somewhere different, but unfortunately there isn't. The people working up front are generally cordial with a few abrasive words that could be brushed off to a busy day in a small store. Overall my experience was good, I got my quote and went with it. However if you are looking at hardware replacement parts for a macbook pro consider calling apple and getting a quote before allowing them to work on your laptop. They are overpriced. It would have cost me $200 more than apple to have them fix it. It is a matter of convienence however. If you want your computer or other electronic devices fixed quickly regardless of the best price this is the place to go in state college, otherwise use your resources carefully! read more

AVOID THIS STORE. This place is a complete disaster. These people might know something about Apple computers under warranty (mine was not under warranty, so I am unwilling to suggest they don't know anything at all about any computers), but they do not know how to deal with customers or fix problems: we were told that our hard-drive had been "put in the freezer" overnight as a troubleshooting move (is it necessary to say that this didn't help our hard-drive?). `When I arrived at Connecting Point to pick up a broken computer and pay for a inconclusive "diagnosis," I was initially asked to pay $99.00 for an external hard-drive which had been purchased at another location. Upon resolving that issue (without paying again for the hard-drive that had been purchased somewhere else), I was told I needed to pay a $60.00 diagnosis fee and $50.00 fee for "failed data recovery." We had previously agreed to a $75.00 data recovery fee. That recovery failed, but I was nevertheless assessed a $50.00 fee, I guess for the attempt? Apparently, diagnosing a hard drive and diagnosing a laptop are two unrelated activities. The fact that such a fee existed, and would be charged in the event of "recovery failure," had never been made clear, and we had not discussed it as a possibility when deciding whether or not to seek data recovery from Connecting Point. When I informed the owner, Steve, that we had not been notified of this fee (a fact confirmed by a third party also present at the time), Steve claimed that he "always" told customers about said fee, and had been in the business for 30 years. There was then some back-and-forth between myself and Steve, during which time Steve suggested that perhaps we did not recall his mention of said fee, insulted my intelligence, and taunted me. I reiterated that, at the very least, our completely forgetting about a $50 fee for an attempted data recovery was highly unlikely, given that we have been trying to find the best deal and most trusted service for this laptop for over a week. I was then forced to pay all the charges for the computer in order to have not only my laptop but the external hard-drive I had purchased somewhere else returned to me. After some further insults and taunting (including the suggestion that I "knew nothing about computers" and "could take him to court"), I left with my property. read more

Do not use this place!!!! This place is extremely unprofessional and the employees are rude. They did not fix my phone even after giving it back to me and assuring me it was fixed. I could not test it out for myself until getting home and restoring the content from my ICloud backup. This was a warranty repair so thankfully I didn't have to give these guys a dime. I will be reporting their poor service directly to Apple. They should not be representing Apple as an authorized service provider. Do not go here for warranty repairs, you are better off sending your device directly to Apple. I have no reason to even believe they actually replaced the part they said they did. No test was provided to show it was fixed. I got home and my device was the same as it was before I dropped it off to them. When I called back to tell them that they didn't fix it the guy on the phone got immediately defensive and rude and speculated that it was another issue entirely now with regards to why my device isn't working. read more

Got a kick out of the condescending person who described my report as condescending. Unfortunately my experience was what it was. I'm glad that she had a wonderful experience. Service/tech guys were nice and very helpful. Receptionist was arrogant, condescending and just generally unpleasant and not helpful. I took my work computer because the harddrive was not accessible and was initially greeted by a pleasant guy who answered all of my questions (and I had a ton of them because this was my work computer, not just personal) and assured me they would do what they could to recover any lost data. A minute after leaving, I realized I had forgotten to hand over an external harddrive for any recovered data to be transferred to. By that time the guy I had talked to was in the back and their "receptionist" had taken his post, with feet propped up at the front desk. I explained to him that I was just there and dropping it off for backup. I asked a couple general questions about their method of data recovery (if, what, when), and got a snarky, but adequate response. Fast forward to pick-up time. Walked in to the same receptionist. Had to provide and ID for payment, and I informed him that it was a business account, so my ID would not match up. He replied in a completely condescending manner, letting me know he didn't care who's ID it was, he just needed one. OK. He brought the machine and external out, and I wanted to verify the specifics of the data recovery because I had to relay this info to my boss. He grabbed the invoice out of my hand and said something along the lines of, "Look, it says right here no data recovered." Immediately after, the tech who worked on it peaked over his cubicle and kindly said he had worked on the machine and there was some data backed up on the harddrive. Receptionist didn't say another word. I said thank you. No response, at all. So if you have any customer service skills, I'd suggest you apply for the receptionist position at the Connecting Point. read more

They told me my broken macbook cord, which was under apple warranty was not covered and said it would cost $79 for a new cord. The employee was rude and condensending when questioned about this policy. Took the broken cord to a "real" apple store and it was replaced quickly and professionally and for FREE! I do NOT recommend this place! read more

There is no doubt that the manager is the most surly and unwelcoming service professional I have ever met. He told me twice to stop calling and asking questions about my computer - even though both calls were expected by the techs. The communication is also very poor. I needed a new hard drive and was not told my apps would not be retrieved. I would also note, like others have already, the facilities are dirty and bleak. You feel like it is a garage with a bunch of high school buddies working on projects. I don't know who owns connecting point but a word of advice: treat your customers with a modicum of respect and your business would do better. The extremely negative experiences I and others have had will not only drive business away but encourage customers to actively discourage others from using your services. I love Macintosh computers and have only had to access connecting point services two times. But Ion both occasions it left a bitter taste in my mouth. Statistically that's pretty bad 2/2 or 100% bad experiences). read more
